WITH YOUR SUPPORT, YOUR COMPANY, YOUR EMPLOYEES AND THE CHILDREN, TEENS, FAMILIES AND SENIORS SERVED BY OUR COMMUNITY PROGRAMS

Ketchum-Downtown YMCA Community Programs The Stuart M. Ketchum Downtown YMCA is the heart of the Los Angeles Downtown community, where people from the many groups that make up the center of our city come together to improve their lives and the lives of those around them. The Ketchum-Downtown Y serves as a bridge between the abundant Bunker Hill financial district and the low-income residential neighborhoods it overlooks. Each year, we improve the lives of inner-city children, families, teens and adults with quality community-based programs specifically designed to meet their needs. More than 250,000 people reside within a two-mile radius of our facility at 4th and Hope streets, including about 75,000 school-aged children. We serve them with the following programs: Preschool & Day Care Center: Our Preschool and Day Care Center offers a superior early education to children aged 3 to 5 for a nominal fee that enables lowincome, working families in the Pico Union neighborhood to lift themselves out of poverty and give their children a life-changing head start. Growing Young Minds (GYM) Program: Offered at Hoover Elementary School in the Pico Union district, GYM provides children with homework assistance, enrichment, music, dance, arts & crafts, computers, sports and physical activities, and character development, as well as the Junior Achievement elementary school program in financial literacy and business education. Much more than mundane afterschool supervision, GYM also offers education and activities for whole families and resembles an extended family far more than a school-related program. Teen LEAD Program: An after-school alternative for inner-city teens, Teen LEAD emphasizes service-learning, academic achievement, environmental awareness, character development and physical fitness. Participants build self-confidence, learn to accept and overcome challenges, plan for college, contribute to their community and serve as role models to their peers and to younger children. Many of the program’s high school seniors have graduated and have gone on to colleges and universities including UC Berkeley and UCLA. Summer Resident Camp: Introduces local youth to the mountains. For many inner-city kids, a week at the YMCA’s camp in Big Bear is their first trip to the mountains and provides a stark contrast to the noisy and difficult neighborhoods they leave behind. Camp activities help build confidence, team work, leadership, self-reliance and an appreciation for nature. Campers have the time of their lives and many come back year after year, first as campers, then as counselors. PLAY (School-Based YMCA Program): Offered at Miramonte Elementary School in South Los Angeles, this vital sports and fitness program was created as a solution for the dozens of schools who no longer offer Physical Education due to budget cuts. PLAY brings the many benefits of physical activity and athletics to first– through sixth-grade students who would not otherwise receive these important opportunities. Youth & Government Program: This intensive program offers the unique opportunity for high school students to learn about public speaking, professional skills, and state government by becoming members of the Senate, Assembly, Supreme Court, and Appellate Court, or participating as lobbyists, reporters, and pages. The culmination is five days at the State Capital—where bills are debated in actual House Chambers and court cases are tried in State courtrooms. Financial Assistance: In order to ensure that income is not a barrier to a healthy lifestyle (no one is turned away for inability to pay and currently 25 percent of our membership is subsidized), the YMCA provides financial assistance to individuals and families who cannot afford to pay full cost. Youth & Family Health Initiative: The Youth & Family Health Initiative is a bold effort to offer access to free health screenings and educational workshops to every one of the nearly 2,000 children, families and seniors we serve each year in our community programs. Through the Initiative, we address community health in a very broad way and leverage partnerships and affiliations with more than 50 public, private and governmental organizations to offer everything from nutrition and exercise workshops to mobile health clinics and access to the arts.
