YMCA OF METROPOLITAN LOS ANGELES WOW!
WOW!
THANKS FOR EVERYTHING YOU HELPED US ACHIEVE IN 2013!
It’s thanks to you, our incredibly supportive donors that we achieved what we did in 2013. Over the following pages, we’re proud to share the stories of just a few of the people and projects that thrived because of your generosity.
STRENGTHENING COMMUNITIES IS OUR CAUSE We’re an association committed to bringing about lasting personal and social change. With a focus on nurturing the potential of every child and teen, improving the nation’s health and well-being and providing opportunities to give back and support neighbors, the Y enables youth, adults, families and communities to be healthy, confident, connected, and secure.
With your help, we’re dedicated to strengthening the foundations of community within all the diverse neighborhoods of Los Angeles we serve. Our three areas of focus are: • Youth Development • Healthy Living • Social Responsibility
Since opening our first downtown branch in 1882, we’ve been providing individuals and families in the Greater Los Angeles area with access to the resources and support they need to learn, grow and thrive. We have the presence and partnerships to not just promise, but actually deliver positive change – and you are a huge part of that.
NEIGHBORS HELPING NEIGHBORS
“Without the Y, many more children would be malnourished or susceptible to diseases such as diabetes or obesity. Our local families desperately need the Y. Linda Alvarez, Award-Winning Journalist and LA Y Board Member
As families participate in healthy living activities, chronic disease and obesity rates drop, lowering stress and leading to decreased neighborhood violence. Our programs serve people of all ages and backgrounds at more than 170 unique locations across the city.
Los Angeles is now the second largest city in the United States. As our population has grown, we have continued to evolve - finding innovative ways to meet the challenges our communities face. Our Ys are a resource to thousands of at-risk youth in LA neighborhoods, some of whom are dealing with the dangers of gang activity, chronic illness and violent crime.
FOUR CORE VALUES We are guided by: caring honesty respect responsibility
WE DO IT HEART FIRST We place the four core values at the heart of community, providing gyms, pools, group classes, sports and education programs, camps, support groups, childcare and volunteer initiatives. Our impact is felt when an individual makes a healthy choice, when a mentor inspires a child and when a community comes together for the common good.
OUR Ys ARE AS UNIQUE AS THE COMMUNITIES WE SERVE
With more than 140 cultures and as many as 224 languages, Angelenos are as diverse as it gets. Our 26 branches range from ocean to mountain with many urban communities between. OUR BRANCHES

FULFILLING INDIVIDUAL NEEDS WITH THE POWER OF COMMUNITY
Our Y families and individual members come from all walks of life: • New parents searching for opportunities for their family to grow and thrive • Teens looking for an alternative to hanging out on the streets • Celebrities seeking anonymity • Seniors enjoying their third chapter We have something for everyone and we welcome everyone, regardless of gender, age, race, faith or income.
“Our family is grateful for the opportunity to belong to the YMCA, especially during my husband’s military deployment to Afghanistan. The YMCA’s Military Families Support Program has helped my 17-month-old daughter build the resilience she needs to cope with the long-term separation from her father. She squeals with delight when I take her out of the car and she sees we have arrived at the Y – and she always wants to hug her teachers and classmates. Because of my husband’s deployment, I put my career on hold to keep our family and household functioning. As we adjust to having less income, the Y has offered financial assistance. This is yet another way that the gift of a Y membership has been invaluable in helping us sustain our family and serve our country. Thank you very much.”
Tami H, Torrance-South Bay YMCA
“I never really exercised and tended to snack a lot at my desk job. I started gaining weight and was at the point where I was going to have to start shopping at Big and Tall! The Beach Cities Health District offered me four options to lose weight and gain better health. The Y’s Diabetes Prevention Program was the most practical choice, since it is a full year, coach-driven program. Taking a spinning class has been a huge help, and my two favorite parts of the program were logging everything I ate and the weekly weigh-in. At 64, I’ve now lost 15 pounds and no longer have neuropathy in my legs. My waistline is smaller, I am excited to workout, and I just feel better. This program helped me actually make a change in my life. I shared my results with my doctor and he was thrilled that I was taking such positive steps.”
Steve T, Diabetes Prevention Program participant (with Isaac Gardner, Healthy Lifestyles Director), TorranceSouth Bay YMCA
“My participation in our YMCA Youth Institute helps improve my technology skills. Using story-boarding, script-writing, video editing and film production, my language arts skills and ability to accurately tell a story have improved. I have also learned to use technology for interactive presentations. My parents acknowledge that the digital arts component directly correlates with my improved grades in classes where reading and writing are intensive, like History, Science, and English classes.”
Samuel M, Weingart Wellness & Aquatic Center
MORE THAN A COMMUNITY CENTER, WE ARE COMMUNITY CENTERED “I grew up attending Camp Whittle every year and, oh, how that experience shaped me! I was blessed to receive assistance from the Y, which enabled me to go. I would like to thank all those who donate to sponsor youth programs such as this. I am a 32-year-old Special Education teacher and know such opportunities shaped the woman I have become. Thank you! Abeja R
We see beyond the four walls of our branches. We know that to get needs met, we need to integrate Y programs into our local communities. In 2013, we had over 20,000 children enrolled in preschool and school-age enrichment efforts. Another 30,000 local youth received fitness education through our school-based PLAY program. Thousands more were engaged in our Youth Institute and Y teen centers that provided tutors, mentors and college prep opportunities. We had 21,000 participants in youth sports programs and nearly 10,000 curious kids broadened their horizons at our residential summer camps.
THANK YOU FOR LISTENING THANK YOU FOR ACTING
“I have been involved with the Y since I started attending programs as a 6-year-old boy, and my first job was as locker room attendant at my local Y. I’m truly a product of the Los Angeles Y, and over the years I’ve repeatedly experienced the profound difference we make in people’s lives. From the confidence and joy Camp instills in children, to the bonds of friendship forged while playing together, or a parent’s gratitude for having a safe place to leave their child, the Y has the ability to impact anyone.
We are blessed to be part of a mission that targets the root causes of social issues and creates real and lasting change throughout Los Angeles. Your support makes all the difference. Thanks to our board members, donors, staff and volunteers, we’re able to reach deep within our community and help those in need. Together, we can do so much more.” Alan Hostrup, President & CEO
SAVING A VALUABLE COMMUNITY RESOURCE The Maywood Community Center in the City of Maywood was struggling to keep its doors open, and in 2012, its swimming pool was closed due to lack of funds. With your support, we forged an innovative partnership with the City and its Mayor to completely revitalize the community center and its swimming pool, creating the new Southeast-Rio Vista YMCA.
SAVING A VALUABLE COMMUNITY RESOURCE
“The community is thinking more about their health now – not just for themselves but for their children. I’m happy to report that we are now no longer the most obese city among children in the southeast.” Mayor Oscar Magana, City of Maywood
In May 2013, our new Southeast-Rio Vista Y opened its doors and welcomed close to 400 local resident members in its first week of operation. In addition to a beautiful aquatic center, there’s a senior center, gymnasium, fitness center and several programs to help promote a health lifestyle and wellness. We focus deeply on the Latino culture, traditions and health risks, since 95% of the community is Spanishspeaking.
“By participating in our Y’s ELR (Early Learning Readiness) program, my daughter is learning how to interact well with other children. She’s also learning valuable lessons about sharing, patience, and being open to books. Building relationships with other parents is a great benefit for me too we even get together outside the Y! I love it here because it’s a family-oriented place.” Luisana V, Southeast-Rio Vista YMCA

BRIGHTER FUTURES In 1995, our CEO Alan Hostrup inaugurated the A BRIGHTER FUTURE program at our Hollywood Wilshire Y. Today, single mothers with up to two children reside on the fourth floor, each family in a one-bedroom apartment. Women with no children occupy the third floor in individual, dorm-style rooms. Every woman receives coaching to obtain a job, go to school, and/or participate in job trade training. In 2013, 49 women and 24 children participated in our program, gaining valuable resources to set them on the path to regaining independence.
BRIGHTER FUTURES
Keythema Bush ran away from her home in Maryland five years ago, at the age of 16, after growing up with abusive parents. With only two options to survive, stripping or prostitution, in despair, she left Maryland and headed to California to find her biological mother.
After a long search, she found the Y’s A BRIGHTER FUTURE program and has been living at the facility for almost two years, taking the bus to community college every day. Once she’s completed her Associate’s degree, Keythema will transfer to Clark Atlanta Gaining a job washing hair in a salon, Keythema University. Her goal is to run a successful started attending community college, eager to do more business and one day create her own program with her life. However, juggling work and her studies for women who are out there on their own. created problems at home, and her mother kicked her “To everyone else, my story is amazing,” says out of the house after a year. Keythema then bounced Keythema. “To me, it is just life.” around between places, living in survival mode.
PUTTING THE CARE BACK IN HEALTHCARE Providence Little Company of Mary Medical Center in San Pedro prides itself on providing the South Bay with high quality medical care and compassionate service. In 2012, physical therapists from the Pulmonary Department involved in a program called Lively Lungs began to bring their patients to our San Pedro & Peninsula Y as part of the transition from rehab to a community fitness setting. Realizing the great resources available at the Y, the therapists asked if we would take over their Lively Lungs program, which is now called ‘BEYOND REHAB.’
“I wish more people my age would stick with this program and get out of it what I have. I feel good. I can breathe better. I have friends. I also get to watch young lives thrive in the childcare area while I sit and wait for the program to start.” Frank C, 85, San Pedro & Peninsula YMCA
“Due to demand, we worked with the Medical Center to create our medically supervised ‘Beyond Rehab’ program. Our members are living with and recovering from stroke, heart disease, joint replacement, pulmonary disease, diabetes, Parkinson’s disease, obesity, spinal injury and osteoporosis. Student nurses from El Camino College who had contract agreements with the hospital now work here at the San Pedro Y and continue the compassionate care.” Elizabeth Zabludoff Senior Program Director
PUTTING THE CARE BACK IN HEALTHCARE
CALIFORNIA YOUTH GOVERNOR APPOINTED FROM WESTSIDE Y Sam Leichenger from our Westside Family Y was elected the 2013 Youth Governor for California as part of our Youth & Government program.
“In Youth & Government, each and every voice matters, no matter your age, how much money you have, or where you come from. I see it as an invaluable tool in advancing the cause of a more perfect democracy through training the next generation to defend its voice and be heard. Throughout my time in Y&G, I have found inspiration, connections, friends, and, ultimately, myself. It is a support team, a family of thousands that will never leave you and will always be in touch no matter where you go or what you do. Sam Leichenger 66th Youth Governor, California
FUTURE PRESIDENTS APPLY HERE As the largest delegation in the country, our Youth & Government Program is truly one of the shining stars in the Y universe, inspiring teenagers to participate in the legislative process. High school students throughout the LA area learn about government by taking on roles as senators, assembly members, legislative analysts, lobbyists and more. They create legislation, and campaigns for elected positions are real, with stringent finance rules and grueling campaigning up and down the state. http://www.news10.net/videos/news/features/2014/02/15/5523225/
“I participated in Model Legislature and Model Court, acting as a senator for two years. Each year, our legislation passed and I’m proud of that. It’s really given me an edge at UCLA where I’m now a student of political science. I couldn’t have received this legislative experience without the Y, and since I’m looking to run for Congress one day, what could be better?” Maribel Garcia, Southeast-Rio Vista YMCA
TO OUR Y ANGELS – THANK YOU “Living in the City of Angels, I’ve seen my fair share of ‘miracles’ happen over the years, but here’s what I so appreciate, those miracles all occur because of the dedication and commitment of people. People who care, people who want to make a difference… people like you. We describe our mission at the Y as standing for Youth Development, Healthy Living and Social Responsibility. Nowhere in there do you see ‘a great place to work out.’ It is, by the way, but it’s so much more than that. The programs, the classes, the atmosphere itself are designed to impart values – personal values of ethical behavior, personal discipline, and the importance of family and civic engagement.
I’ve been on the Y Board since 2006, and I’ve seen that lasting personal and social change comes about when we all work together. It’s so rewarding to see Y members across Los Angeles develop character traits that enable them to succeed in school, in work, and in life. Watching our volunteers at all our Y branches, I see those same character traits in action; grit, perseverance, optimism and empathy. You help us put our commitments into action through your generous donations, and the stories you’ve read in this report are just a smattering of the successes our LA Y achieved in 2013. You truly are the Angels in our fair city and I thank you all.” Cristina Rose, LA Y Chair of the Board

THANK YOU!
We couldn’t do any of this without our members. Thanks for being a part of everything we do, and we appreciate the love.
“I come to the Y because I love to play basketball and I get to meet new people. The Y is a place where I can play sports, and that has an impact on my life because before the Y, I didn’t play any sports. Now I play basketball non-stop. I have played so much that I am already on my 12th season of basketball!” Kerida R, Age 13
“The Y is fun and I like getting to know people. I like the field trips and the counselors. I have gone to summer day camp, swimming, resident camp, gymnastics and played soccer. My favorite was resident camp because I like all the activities, the cabins and the friends I made.” Kassidy E, Age 9 “It’s a great family friendly atmosphere.” Amy T
“I come to the Y because I want to help people and learn new things. The Y has changed my life because the people there help me to see the “Love the energy of the instructors! They are always helpful and give good in life.” modifications when you let them Teyah R, Age 10 know if you have any medical “It’s my home away from home. It’s problems they should be aware of. good to always see familiar faces.” Thanks YMCA!” Selin C Linda M
“Great staff, awesome people, friendly environment. You can drop off your kids to play while you work out, and know they’re being watched attentively. Gym equipment is relatively new. Great gym!” Daniel D
“I am continually impressed by the leadership, the Y board members and their vision to change and impact the community through partnerships and collaborations! This comes not just through fitness and camp and all the other good work, but by listening to our families, our seniors and our “I am a cancer survivor and students and really caring about during my early rehabilitation the them.” John Wogan YMCA was, and continues to be, invaluable in helping me to become President, Carson Chamber of Commerce stronger. I am very grateful to have such a wonderful facility and “Great place to work out, socialize, the staff that works at the Y is and build friendships. My son incredible. I am truly blessed.” loves the kid fitness, cooking, and Cindy D swimming classes.” Nimra G
