I’m a member because... “Staff members are our extended family and we have met many new friends there over the years. It is the place where I give back to others and help whenever possible because at every stage of my own cancer, no matter what condition I was in, I was always needed and welcomed. So, the Y to me represents life and hope. It is not a place to exercise...it is our local heart of the family, a place where you learn how to live and how to pass that learning on.” – H. Ruiz
3
When you join the Y you belong to a place where: • Parents find a safe, positive environment for children to learn good values, social skills and behaviors. • Families come together to have fun and spend quality time with each other. • Children and teens play, learn who they are and what they can achieve, and are accepted. • Adults connect with friends, pursue interests and learn how to live healthier. • Communities thrive because neighbors support each other and give back. • We all build relationships that further our sense of belonging and purpose.

YOUTH DEVELOPMENT The values and skills learned early on are vital building blocks for life. Because of the Y, more young people are making smarter life choices. At the Y, children and teens learn values and positive behaviors, and can explore their unique talents and interests, helping them realize their potential. That makes for confident kids today and contributing and engaged adults tomorrow. 6
CHILD CARE
Safe, nurturing environment for children to learn, grow and develop social skills
With so many demands on today’s families, parents need all the support they can get. That’s why child care at the Y is about more than looking after kids. It’s about nurturing their development by providing a safe place to learn foundational skills, develop healthy, trusting relationships and build self-reliance through the Y values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.
KID ZONE CHILD ACTIVITY CENTER AGES 6 MONTHS – 11 YEARS Enjoy a caring, fun environment where your young children can play and make friends while you work out or attend one of our group exercise classes. EDUCATION & LEADERSHIP
Knowledge, character development, guidance and encouragement to help youth develop and realize their potential
LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT MODEL UNITED NATIONS GRADES 6 – 8 Model United Nations (MUN) is an opportunity to discuss international issues, discover other cultures, develop life enhancing skills and make new friends. The four month program culminates when participants from around the state meet at the Y’s annual Model United Nations Summit. Registration begins December 2013.
MODEL LEGISLATURE & COURT (MLC) GRADES 9 – 12 Want your child to learn important skills such as public speaking, organization, problem solving and time management? MLC is a statewide youth education program involving more than 2,000 high school students in a 9-month, hands-on experience. Teen delegates write bills, select governmental positions to role play, attend statewide training conferences and run for various elected offices. The program reaches its peak in Sacramento at the State Capitol over President’s Day weekend. There, real government steps aside and the teen delegates take over, using the historic halls, chambers and offices of our State Capitol, Supreme Court and Governor’s Office. Registration begins August 2013. Contact Nancy Shaputis at 626-359-9244 ext 7688 or NancyShaputis@ymcala.org

SWIM, SPORTS & PLAY
Positive, fun activities that build athletic, social and interpersonal skills
The Y is the starting point for many youth to learn about becoming and staying active, and developing healthy habits they’ll carry with them throughout their lives. And the benefits are far greater than just physical health. Whether it’s gaining the confidence that comes from learning to swim or building the positive relationships that lead to good sportsmanship and teamwork, participating in activities at the Y is about building the whole child, from the inside out. VOLUNTEERISM & GIVING
Voluntary contributions that fund, lead and support the Y’s critical work
ANNUAL SUPPORT
VOLUNTEERISM
The generosity of others is at the core of our existence. It is only through the support of our hundreds of thousands of volunteers and public and private donors that we are able to give back to the communities we serve.
There is no other volunteer organization quite like the Y. That’s because in 10,000 communities across the nation, we have the presence and partnerships to not just promise, but to deliver, lasting personal and social change. Each of our volunteers helps deliver the benefits of good health, strong connections, greater self-confidence and a sense of security to all who seek it.
As a philanthropic organization, the Y ensures that membership and programs are available to all who need it regardless of ability to pay. Every year, we ask for your contribution to our Community Support Campaign to help us fulfill that mission. When you give to the Y, you move us all forward. We use your gift to make a meaningful, enduring impact right in your neighborhood. Your generosity supports camperships, membership subsidies and new program initiatives. Please give generously for our common future.

CHANGE THE WORLD ONE CHILD AT A TIME
KIDS TO CAMP CAMPAIGN At the Y, you can see how your gift changes lives
You can feel the excitement building here at our Y. This year, 285 children and teens from all walks of life, ranging in age from 8 to 17, are looking forward to fun, new friendships and adventure at camp. Every child deserves the confidence-building opportunities and nurturing role models you find at summer camp. For kids whose lives are filled with hardships, being removed from daily stresses can have a profound emotional impact on their future. Last year, we were able to provide financial assistance to 29% of the campers whose families most needed help with camp fees. The need for financial assistance is even greater this year. Our goal is to raise $45,000 so we can give 78 low-income childrena and teens this lifechanging experience. Please give today. Your tax-deductible gift helps us ensure no camper is turned away and makes a direct, positive difference in a child’s life.
