Frequently Asked Questions What is Venice Camp and where is Coeur d’Alene? Venice Camp is a full day camp offered at Coeur d’Alene Elementary School in Venice/Marina del Rey. This is the fourth year we are offering this camp. Venice Camp is a licensed child care facility. Our camp is held in our YMCA modular classroom on the school campus. Please note that this camp takes place in one large classroom. Although we are in one large classroom, we have camp staff and counselors for each age group. The maximum enrollment for this camp is 35 children. This camp is highly recommended for parents who desire for their children to be in a child-care-like setting. With that said, Venice Camp still offers all the camp activities you would find at any of our other camps, such as sports, games, arts and crafts, weekly field trips, projects and swimming for older youth and splash pads for younger youth. This camp is for campers entering grades Pre-K to 3rd in the Fall of 2014. Campers must be at least 4 years-old on their first day of camp and must be fully potty-trained. This camp is the only camp that accepts Connections for Children subsidies. Can I register online for day camp? Yes, online registration will be available March 23, 2014. Are the registration packets available online? Yes! And you may now register completely online without ever having to come into the YMCA branch (however, in order to have your registration fee of $35 waived, you must register, in-person, at Camp Sign-Up Kickoff Day, March 22, between 10 am and 1 pm). For 2014, you can register online, or you can register in-person at our branch using a registration card. Registration cards are no longer required if you completely register online. Registration packets will still be due to your camp site on your child’s first day of camp. Registration packets may be picked up at the YMCA or downloaded from our website. Do you accept deposits for camp weeks? – We sure do! You can place a $25 dollar deposit for each week of camp you desire to register for. Full payment is due two weeks prior to the start of each week. Deposits hold your space in camp until the payment due date. Once the due date has passed, your reserved space and camp deposit will be forfeited; so please make sure you follow the payment due date schedule, which requires each camp week to be paid in full, two weeks prior to the start of that particular week. May 1, 2014 is the last day we will accept deposits for day camp. Beginning on May 2, 2014, any camps fees paid, have to be paid in full. Have you updated your refund policy? Yes! We have heard your concerns about our refund policy and have decided to modify it. We now permit day camp refund requests. The deadline for refund request is two weeks prior to the start of the camp week for which the refund is being requested. A refund fee of $25.00 will apply, per child, per camp week. Why do the younger campers participating in Explorer and Venice Camp go to the Splash Pads and not the swimming pool? Due to the height and the age of campers in these programs, we are unable to take them to any city or county pools. Ninety-five percent of these campers also do not meet the height requirements for recreational swimming at the YMCA. As a fun alternative, our campers enjoy water play at our local splash pads. Do you offer a multi-child discount? Unfortunately, we do not offer multi-child discounts. However, we do have a financial assistance program, which offers assistance to families who otherwise could not afford the day camp fees. What are the ages and/or grades for specialty camps? Each camp has a different age and grade requirement. Please see each camp for more details. Does my child have to attend every week? No. Camp is offered in weekly sessions. You may sign your child up for any week or weeks your desire. Does the YMCA provide lunch and daily snack at Day Camp? Children are required to bring a sack lunch, water bottle and sun screen to day camp daily. Children are required to wear closed-toed-shoes. Children also need to bring their own morning and afternoon snack. When will the camp calendars/schedule be ready? The camp calendars/schedules will be available on camp sign-up day, March 22, online and at the YMCA branch.
9
How are the children grouped? Are all the ages placed together at Day Camp? Children are grouped by age. Day Camp groups consist of one counselor and ten campers. At times, a C.I.T. may be placed in a camp group to assist the counselor. For water and aquatic trips, our ratio is one counselor for every six children. Will the staff at summer day camp be full of teenagers and college students? YMCA prides itself on finding the best staff possible. Our staff team members are trained in CPR and First Aid and are required to attend a 20 hour Day Camp orientation. Most of our staff possesses college coursework in Child Development, Early Childhood Education, Psychology, Sociology, Recreation, Physical Education and Nutrition. Staff are also required to attend Child Abuse Prevention training and Positive Discipline training. Staff must also be 18 years or older at the time of employment. Do you have to pay a registration fee for each day camp my child attends? No. You are only required to pay one $35 registration fee per child, which covers all our summer day camp, Good Times camp, and specialty camp programs. Why does the YMCA charge a $35 registration fee per participant? The registration fee covers a number of administrative items for day camp, in addition to the purchase of day camp t-shirts. Our administrative costs include office services, marketing and mailings, communication and overhead. How do I apply for financial assistance? Summer Camp financial assistance applications are available for submission. You may download and print our financial assistance application from our website, or pick one up at the Welcome Center. Make sure you get your applications in early so that you can have your award before Camp registration day, which is March 22, 2014. Please note, if you are applying for financial assistance, you cannot register until after your application has been processed and approved. If you register before you receive an award, the registrar cannot go back and adjust your camp rate. For more information, check out our 2014 Parent Handbook!

Swim Testing The YMCA classifies children as “swimmers” or “non-swimmers” for our summer day camp programs. The YMCA will no longer provide swim testing during summer day camp. All swim testing will be conducted prior to the start of camp. We will also offer one additional swim testing date mid-summer. Parents will need to bring their children to the YMCA during one of our swim testing dates to have their children tested for the deep end. Swim testing is only required if you would like for your child to swim in the deep end of the pool. The YMCA defines “deep end” as the level of water in the pool that, once your child has their feet planted on the bottom of the pool, reaches above your child’s armpits. The “deep end” is based upon the height of a child and not necessary defined by the depth of the swimming pool. In order for a child to swim in water that rises above their armpits, they must be swim tested. If you prefer for your child to remain in the “shallow end” a swim test is not required. The YMCA of Metropolitan Los Angeles defines swim testing as follows: Children are to be tested by the Lifeguard as to ability before attending an aquatics venue for the summer. A child classified as a swimmer must be able to swim a distance of 75 feet without touching the bottom or side of a pool and tread water for one (1) minute. If a child is not tested, they are to be classified as a non swimmer; if child is classified as non-swimmer, swim test is not needed. The results of the swim test must be recorded on the “Swim Test Results Form”. The site supervisor must have this form on every child listed as a swimmer while at an aquatic venue. The swim test results will be given to each camp director so that they are aware of who is classified as a swimmer. All other children not on the list will be classified, by default, as non-swimmer. Swim Testing Dates May 23, 30 June 6, 13 6 – 8 pm Westchester Family YMCA Pool There is no appointment needed. Please arrive within the time specified. Please also expect to be at the YMCA for 30 to 60 minutes, as children will be tested in the order they arrive.
Campers in Club 45 and Explorer camp, and younger children in Venice Camp do not need to be swim tested as their camps are scheduled to go to the local splash pads, and not the swimming pool. You are welcome to have your child tested for free, even if their camp is not going to the swimming pool.
