The Y is a nonprofit like no other. Be a member of something special. At the Y, strengthening communities is our cause. That’s why we’re here working with you every day, making sure that you and your family have the resources and support you need to learn, grow, and thrive. With a focus on developing the potential of kids, improving individual health and well-being, and giving back and supporting our neighbors, your membership will bring about meaningful change not just within yourself, but in your community too.
When you join the Y you belong to a place where: • Parents find a safe, positive environment for children to learn good values, social skills and behaviors. • Families come together to have fun and spend quality time with each other. • Children and teens play, learn who they are and what they can achieve, and are accepted. • Adults connect with friends, pursue interests and learn how to live healthier. • Communities thrive because neighbors support each other and give back. • We all build relationships that further our sense of belonging and purpose. I’m a member because... “When I joined the Y, for the first time in my life, I felt inspired and invigorated by exercise. The Y is now a heartbeat in my life. I am grateful for all the kindness and support I have experienced over all these years and know the best is yet to come.”
– Ouhi (Stefanie) Uluhogian Y Member since 1995 Yes, you can afford it The YMCA is a non-profit organization that welcomes everyone, regardless of gender, age, race, faith and income. LEADERSHIP CAMP ENTERING GRADES 10 & 11 in Fall 2015 Leadership is a critical skill in today’s world and this is one of the Y’s most praised leadership training programs. Our camping program is progressive, and when teens are entering 10th and 11th grades, we feel they are ready to explore their own leadership styles and learn how to work more deliberately with others — both as peers and as leaders. Campers participate in projects like planning Songfest and the Carnival in addition to working with younger campers and enjoying traditional camp activities. Successful completion of Leadership Camp leads to the opportunity to become a Counselor in Training the summer before entering 12th grade. Leadership Camp has always demanded excellence from and set high standards for its participants. Leadership Campers must submit a separate application in addition to Camp registration. COUNSELOR IN TRAINING (CIT) PROGRAM ENTERING GRADE 12 in Fall 2015 For high school seniors (with at least one year of Leadership Camp at Camp Whittle), this is an opportunity to work in cabins alongside experienced counselors to lead campers through their week of resident camp. Building upon their experiences in Leadership Camp, CITs will learn first-hand how to counsel children ages 8-11 in both cabin and camp-wide activities. With the guidance of senior staff members, CITs will be expected to meet both personal and program objectives in their preparation to take on the role of Counselor. CITs must submit a separate application in addition to Camp registration. For more information about Camp please contact Heather, Director of Camp & Family Programs, at 424 465 5234 or HeatherArlt@ymcala.org. 13

Since its inception, the program has used a variety of activities to build, encourage, and strengthen those life assets and character traits that will help high school youth become involved responsible adults, who are decent and respected citizens. The tool used is a high quality experiential and educational simulation based upon California’s state government. The program is very comprehensive, and its impact on the youth participants is dramatic. During the nine-month period, the teen delegates write bills, select governmental positions to role-play, attend statewide training conferences, and run for various elected offices. The program reaches its peak in Sacramento at the State Capitol with the convening of the five-day Model Legislature and Court. There, “real” government moves over and the teen delegates take over, using the historic halls, chambers, and offices of our State Capitol, Supreme Court, and Governor’s Office.
