EDUCATION & LEADERSHIP
Knowledge, character development, guidance and encouragement to help youth develop and realize their potential Leadership Development Model United Nations Grades 6 – 8 Model United Nations (MUN) is an opportunity to discuss international issues, discover other cultures, develop life-enhancing skills and make new friends. The four-month program culminates when participants from around the state meet at the Y’s Annual Model United Nations Summit. Starting in January and going until May, the Westside Delegation meets on Thursday from 5 pm to 6:30 pm at the Brentwood Youth House located at 731 S. Bundy Drive, Los Angeles, CA 90049. Registration begins December 2013 and ends January 31, 2014. $860. Monthly payment options are available.
YOUTH & GOVERNMENT SPRING CONFERENCE Grades 9 – 12 Youth & Government Spring Conference takes place April 4-6, 2014, in Corcoran, California. It is an informal taste of Youth and Government. The conference is a fun, relaxed weekend that everyone (outgoing as well as incoming and returning) is encouraged to attend. It is held in Central California at Corcoran High School and the Corcoran YMCA. The conference gives participants a general idea of what is involved with the Model Legislature & Court (MLC) Program. Starting in March and going until April, the Westside Delegation meets on Tuesdays from 6:30 pm to 8 pm at the Brentwood Youth House located at 731 S. Bundy Drive, Los Angeles, CA 90049. Registration begins in February. $350. Model Legislature & Court (MLC) Grades 9 – 12 The Model Legislature and Court (ML/C) is a statewide youth educational program involving more than 2,500 high school students in a nine month “hands on” experience. Since its inception, the program has used a variety of activities to build, encourage, and strengthen those life assets and character traits that will help high school youth become involved responsible adults who are decent and respected citizens. The tool used is a high quality experiential and educational simulation based upon California’s state government. The program is very comprehensive, and its impact on the youth participants is dramatic. During the nine-month period, the teen delegates write bills, select governmental positions to role-play, attend statewide training conferences, and run for various elected offices. The program reaches its peak in Sacramento at the State Capitol with the convening of the five-day Model Legislature and Court. There, “real” government moves over and the teen delegates “take over,” using the historic halls, chambers, and offices of our State Capitol, Supreme Court, and Governor’s Office. Starting in August and going until February, the Westside Delegation meets on Tuesdays from 6:30 pm to 8 pm at the Brentwood Youth House located at 731 S. Bundy Drive, Los Angeles, CA 90049. Registration begins August 2014 for 20142015 school year. Contact Dorian, Director of Teen Programs, at 424 465 5240 or DorianRoohi@ymcala.org

Swim, sports & play
Positive, fun activities that build athletic, social and interpersonal skills
The Y is the starting point for many youth to learn about becoming and staying active, and developing healthy habits they’ll carry with them throughout their lives. And the benefits are far greater than just physical health. Whether it’s gaining the confidence that comes from learning to swim or building the positive relationships that lead to good sportsmanship and teamwork, participating in activities at the Y is about building the whole child, from the inside out.
Youth Swim lessons Imagine watching your child swim across the pool for the first time. Or learn a new stroke that they didn’t think they could ever do. When your kids take a swim lesson with the Y, they’ll gain confidence and learn new skills in a fun, caring environment. Not to mention the benefits of staying active and healthy! Registration Dates

Camp Harold F. entering grades 7 - 9 in Fall 2014 In addition to Camp Whittle activities, Harold F. campers also visit the lake where they can go banana boating, kayaking, canoeing, paddleboarding, and paddleboating. Night hikes are also offered as an older camper activity. Leadership Camp ENtering grades 10 & 11 in Fall 2014 Leadership is a critical skill in today’s world and this is one of the Y’s most praised leadership training programs. Our camping program is progressive, and when teens are entering 10th and 11th grades, we feel they are ready to explore their own leadership styles and learn how to work more deliberately with others — both as peers and as leaders. Campers participate in projects like planning Songfest and the Carnival in addition to working with younger campers and enjoying traditional camp activities. Successful completion of Leadership Camp leads to the opportunity to become a Counselor in Training the summer before entering 12th grade. Leadership Camp has always demanded excellence from and set high standards for its participants. Leadership Campers must submit a separate application in addition to Camp registration. Applications are due in March. Counselor in Training (CIT) Program Entering grade 12 in Fall 2014 For high school seniors (with at least one year of Leadership Camp at Camp Whittle), this is an opportunity to work in cabins alongside experienced counselors to lead campers through their week of resident camp. Building upon their experiences in Leadership Camp, CITs will learn first-hand how to counsel children ages 8-11 in both cabin and camp-wide activities. With the guidance of senior staff members, CITs will be expected to meet both personal and program objectives in their preparation to take on the role of Counselor. CITs must submit a separate application in addition to Camp registration. Applications are due in March.

Lap Swimming As you enjoy the relaxing nature of being in the water, you’ll be working two major muscle groups (arms and legs) simultaneously, while having less strain on the body than many other exercise forms. It also helps to elevate your heart rate and burn calories. Please see the Pool Schedule for designated lap swimming times and lane availability. ADULT recreational These lanes are reserved for adults who wish to exercise in the pool without swimming laps. The space can be used for aqua jogging or other stationary exercises. Please see the pool schedule for designated adult swim times and lane availability.

Volunteerism & Giving
Voluntary contributions that fund, lead and support the Y’s critical work
Annual campaign
Volunteerism
The generosity of others is at the core of our existence. It is only through the support of our hundreds of thousands of volunteers and public and private donors that we are able to give back to the communities we serve.
There is no other volunteer organization quite like the Y. That’s because in 10,000 communities across the nation, we have the presence and partnerships to not just promise, but to deliver, lasting personal and social change. Each of our volunteers helps deliver the benefits of good health, strong connections, greater self-confidence and a sense of security to all who seek it.
As a philanthropic organization, the Y ensures that membership and programs are available to all who need it regardless of ability to pay. Every year, we ask for your contribution to our Annual Campaign to help us fulfill that mission. When you give to the Y, you move us all forward. We use your gift to make a meaningful, enduring impact right in your neighborhood. Your generosity supports camperships, membership subsidies and new program initiatives. Please give generously for our common future.
Ambassador Welcome new members, encourage their participation in programs and introduce them to staff and other members.
