MAKING A

DIFFERENCE The Peninsula Family YMCA has been serving the Ocean Beach, Point Loma and Midway communities for almost 50 years, initially in schools, churches and parks. Our structure was built in 1977 to provide a pool and community center in the current location. Additions were completed in 2005 and 2011, constructing new facilities to meet current and future service needs. We continue to partner with neighborhood churches and local schools to provide programs out in the community. Over 8,000 community residents are served by our local Y in memberships or programs each year. Our Y focuses on building strong kids, strong families and strong communities. The area we live and work constitutes a diverse range of culture and socioeconomic levels, and the YMCA brings people together. While our community is a wonderful place to be, we face certain health, education and lifestyle issues. Our current facilities, built for previous generations and different purposes, are in urgent need for updates and expansion so that we can continue to make an impact for years to come.

Drowning is one of the leading causes of accidental death in children under 14. The Y provides life saving skills by offering swim lessons to all ages and by collaborating with local schools for swim instruction. Last year, 736 kids learned to be safer and more confident around water at our Y.

Today’s youth average 6.5 hours in front of screens each day. We get kids active through youth sports, day camp and other enrichment activities, where kids and teens can interact socially and learn healthy habits that will last a lifetime.

The hours of 3:00-6:00 pm on school days is the time when kids are most likely to engage in self-destructive behavior. YMCA after-school programs help children with homework, provide a healthy snack and give them space to play in a supervised, nurturing environment. More than 340 kids spend part of their school day in Y After School programs.

7% of families in our community live below the poverty level. 21% of households earn less than $35,000/year. Families with a single parent are more likely to feel economic pressure. We believe in access for all, regardless of their ability to pay. Nearly $300,000 direct and indirect financial assistance is invested back into the community each year through scholarships and program subsidies.

Most students lose two months of grade-level math skills in the summer. YMCA day camp programs include activities that help prevent summer learning loss, keeping kids active and engaged when school is out. Our day camps serve more than 850 children every summer.

Seniors need opportunities to stay active and connected, and to promote successful aging. The Y truly is for all ages. We offer special senior programming to welcome and connect older adults through wellness, volunteering and social activities.

Obesity and inactivity can lead to lifestyle-related diseases. Today, 2.5 million (or 9%) of California adults have been diagnosed with diabetes. 26% of San Diego County residents are obese. The Y is a leader in combating life style related diseases with group exercise programs, wellness coaching and more. We also help people recovering from injuries or dealing with chronic illness to remain active and improve their health.

WHY IT’S NEEDED

The future facility will allow us to strengthen community and expand our impact in three key areas. YOUTH DEVELOPMENT YMCA youth programs nurture children’s development by providing a safe place to learn foundational skills, develop healthy relationships, and build self-reliance. • More children will experience learning activities and socialization in our expanded Child Discovery Center, while giving parents an opportunity to focus on their own health and wellness. • Youth of all ages will enjoy a variety of enrichment programs such as art, dance and science in our community program and meeting space.

HEALTHY LIVING Membership at the Y means far more than joining a gym-it’s a movement to improve lives so all people may reach their potential. • 600 more households will be engaged in our Y, with 15-25% growth in membership within 3 years of opening the new facility. • Members will have increased privacy and options for families with updated locker rooms and new family changing areas. • Teens, adults, and seniors can find their perfect workout with space for additional cardio equipment and group exercise classes.

SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY At the Y, we have a commitment to serving those who need our services most. • Social bonds, which benefit health and longevity, will be forged in our new social gathering spaces. • Community groups and organizations will have a space to meet or hold social events in our meeting rooms and rooftop deck. • More adults, youth, families and seniors will have access to our Y than ever before with an increase in financial assistance.

OUR MISSION

The YMCA of San Diego County is dedicated to improving the quality of human life and to helping all people realize their fullest potential as children of God through development of the spirit, mind and body.

Claude Ryan arrived in San Diego in 1922 with only his Model T and a dream. He sold that car to buy his first airplane, for $400. While trying to build his aviation business, Claude often stayed at the YMCA, then located downtown, and parked his Jenny airplane right outside the handball courts.

As an entrepreneur and aviator, Claude Ryan started a flight school, built aircraft and created the first scheduled passenger airline. The company started by Ryan built Charles Lindbergh’s “Spirit of St. Louis” right here in San Diego. Claude and his wife Gladys created the Ryan Family Charitable Foundation which has supported over 120 charities. Renaming the Peninsula Family YMCA in their honor recognizes their values and legacy in our community.
