SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY Giving back and supporting those in need. Building a better community one person at a time!

COMMUNITY

OUTREACH

Meeting youth where they are in life and putting them on a path toward a brighter future is the focus of the Community Outreach YMCA. Youth in the Rockford area are supported and guided during their developmental years within many of the programs offered.

RAISE AND ACHIEVERS

KID’S PLACE 1 & 2

RAISE and Achievers inspires students to excel by effectively linking them to professionals to improve academic performance and broaden career options. This program focuses on preparing first generation college students for college. Weekly program sessions help students through the college selection, application, and acceptance process. Volunteers mentor students throughout this process and assist them through their first year in college. RAISE and Achievers is designed for all high school students.

The Kid’s Place provides secure waiting rooms within both the Winnebago County Courthouse and the Winnebago County Criminal Justice Center for children ages two through twelve. The facilities are available free of charge to parents and guardians who are conducting business at one of the courthouses. CONTACT: Salina Brown at 815-516-2479

CONTACT: Tamica Fricks at 815-540-7776

WALKING SCHOOL BUS ELEVATE

WSB provides a safe and healthy way for kids to get to Lewis Lemon Elementary and Ellis Elementary. YMCA staff members walk a set route around the neighborhood each morning school is in session. As they walk children join the group and get to school on time and safely.

Elevate is a free GED program offered in partnership with Workforce Connection and Rock Valley College. Students age 17- 24 are provided tutoring, basic job and life skill training while working toward their GED.

CONTACT: Sharetha Lewers at 815-608-7030

Elevate also provides after school tutoring at East High School and Belvidere North High School for students working toward their high school diploma. Tutoring includes both assistance with homework and tutoring in basic skills.

ROCKFORD SERVICE CORPS The Y is currently seeking community members to become part of our AmeriCorps service program. Individuals work with a diverse group of children and teens through various types of service work, such as mentorship, community service projects and many others.

Togetherhood is a YMCA initiative that invites Y members to activate their social responsibility by participating in the Y’s cause to strengthen community. This initiative provides Y members with fun, convenient and rewarding ways to give back and support their neighbors through member– generated service projects and other charitable endeavors. Togetherhood serves to bring the Y back to its roots as a volunteer–powered association of people who wish to make a difference.

These AmeriCorps members will work on a part–time basis and will receive monthly living stipends, and an educational award to be used for future or current educational costs upon the completion of service. This is a great way for students and recent grads to gain new skills and professional experience, serve their community and build their resumes.

We are currently seeking Y members who wish to serve their community. We have a variety of ways to get involved in the Togetherhood initiative, and we strongly encourage our members to learn more. Check out all the various volunteer opportunities we have at www.rockriverymca.org/volunteers.

For more information, contact Sharetha Lewers at 815-608-7030.

Call 779-500-0800 or email togetherhood@rockriverymca.org to volunteer or receive more information regarding Togetherhood.

If you are interested in volunteering for any of our programs please contact the office at 815-489-1194.

SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

SPIRITUAL DEVELOPMENT PRAYER BOX

PRAYER GATHERING

We invite you to share your concerns with us so we can support you in prayer. We have placed a box in the lobby at the Northeast Family YMCA and one just off the lobby on the way to the main gym at the I.D. Pennock Family YMCA. There you can anonymously drop off any prayer requests you might have. There is no limit to how many requests you may make. A team of pray-ers, including the Y chaplains will pray regularly over these requests. Strict confidentiality will be adhered to.

There is a time for community prayer every Wednesday morning from 7am-8:30am at the Log Lodge of the I.D. Pennock Family Y. All are welcome. It is a drop in event, so come for as long or as short as you like. From June through August we move the prayer time to Anderson Gardens to accommodate other use of the Lodge.

DEVOTIONS CHAPLAIN TEAM

We send out a weekly, brief devotion to all staff, and offer it to anyone else who wants it. Just contact Gary to be added to the email list.

We now have a growing team of volunteer chaplains to serve you, available to any Y member, staff, or guest. If you have something on your mind, need prayer, or just want someone to talk to, let us know. Our chaplains are mostly local pastors, or people engaged in ministry in the community. If you have a need, we will connect you to one of the team. We are also willing to volunteer to help in any area of need that we can.

PARTNERSHIPS We realize that we cannot accomplish all we hope to in the area of Christian spiritual development by ourselves. That is why we are always seeking to build partnerships with congregations, ministries, and individuals who share our passion and heart for this. For example, Campus Life meets in the IDP facility, and Crossroads Kids Clubs partner with our after school programs in several locations. We desire to make our facilities available to you and your congregation or ministry if you have a class or outreach or ministry that would be well served by being in the the Y. Contact us with your ideas.

To get information about what is available, to suggest an idea, or to share a concern or prayer request, contact: Gary Schwerin, Spiritual Development Minister, at 815.985.8796 or gschwerin@rockriverymca.org or visit www.rockriverymca.org.
