Jul 2017 – Dec 2017 Dear Parents, We would like to extend our warm welcome to all our students and their families to YMCA Student Care Centre @ East View. We would also like to take this opportunity to thank East View Primary School and the parents for their continuous support in allowing our students to enjoy a holistic education here in East View Student Care Centre. There were many exciting activities that took place in the second half of 2017. Here are some of the memorable highlights from July to December 2017, so sit back and enjoy! 5th YMCA Storytelling Competition – (6th September 2017) The 5th YMCA Storytelling Competition was held on 6th September 2017 at the YMCA Headquarters. The theme for this year was “Kindness”. The students worked hard to practice telling their stories in the most engaging way possible. This year, our contestants put in tremendous effort and Rohan Patil Vinod, Primary 4, won first place in the Upper Primary category. Congratulations, Rohan!

Values-In-Action Programmes Recycling Presentation – (28th August 2017) As part of their Values-In-Action (VIA) project, students from Hai Sing Catholic School visited the centre to give our students a presentation on recycling. The students learnt the importance of recycling as part of efforts to save our Earth and went through recycling activities to reinforce their learning.

Chinese Tea Ceremony Presentation – (20th October 2017) In this presentation, the students from Hai Sing Catholic School aimed to raise awareness on “Chinese Tea Ceremony”. They shared the important milestones in the history of Chinese Tea Ceremony in China, describing the various types of tea, the benefit and use of tea as medicines, refreshments, religious purposes and as an indicator of social status. Enrichment Programmes My Fun Crayons – (July to September 2017)

Through the thirteen sessions of My Fun Crayons, students were taught different elements of art (shapes, colours & forms). Students used colour blending techniques to create the 3-dimensional and realistic-looking food. Students understood the difference of drawing and colouring 2-dimensional shapes and 3-dimensional forms. At the end of each session, students had an opportunity to explain and share on their art pieces with the rest of their friends.

Y Junior MasterChef: (October – December 2017) Through the thirteen sessions of Y Junior MasterChef, students were taught to make simple, quick and healthy dishes. Y Junior MasterChef teaches students the many health benefits of fruits and greens. Students learn how to whip up a meal without the use of oil, and other preservatives. It is a useful skill so that when they are at home alone and hungry, a simple meal taught in Y Junior MasterChef can fill up their tummy!

Character Development Programmes Character & Citizenship Education (CCE) – (July to December 2017) During CCE lessons, students were taught the important key points of 12 core values every month. From July to December 2017, they learnt the core values of self-control, perseverance, sincerity, forgiveness, gratefulness and generosity. Through short videos and mini-activities planned, they learnt the definition of these core values and how to apply them in their daily lives.

Monthly Best-Behaved Awards (MBBA) – (July to December 2017) In the centre, we encourage good behaviour in students through positive reinforcements. Every month, book vouchers and certificates were presented to two deserving students who had consistently showed excellent conduct or had exhibited vast improvement in their attitude.

Holiday Programmes Magic Sand in a Bottle – (4th September 2017)

During the September school holidays, the students embarked on an in-house workshop to create bottles filled with coloured sand. The students made the sand on their own using salt and coloured chalk, and then creatively filled the recycled glass bottles with the coloured sand!

The Splendours of Asia – (November to December 2017) Our theme for the November/December school holidays was “The Splendours of Asia”. Four different countries in Asia: China, Japan, Indonesia and Thailand were touched on. For each of the countries, the mentors conducted lessons and activities on the weather, special landmarks, natural resources, food, traditions, sports, festivals and specialty skills. Videos were also shown to the students for them to visualize and have a deeper understanding of each of the main components covered.

Holiday Programmes Chinese Calligraphy Workshop – (23rd November 2017) During the November/December school holidays, students participated in the Chinese Calligraphy in-house workshop. For the first part of the workshop, they learnt the basic principles of Chinese calligraphy and how to identify the specific characters and symbols. Short video clips on Chinese calligraphy were shown too. In the second part of the workshop, to the students created a work of art using Chinese calligraphy. Students were given a set of brush and ink to bring home after the workshop!

Christmas Baking Workshop – (19th December 2017)

The students participated in the Christmas Baking workshop where they made bread sticks and cookies in preparation for Christmas. They learnt the art of baking without the use of a stove. It was indeed a fun-filled experience for them!

Holiday Outing – (30th November 2017) Sauce Factory Tour Outing During the November/December school holidays, the centre organised an outing to Tai Hua Food Industries Pte Ltd. The students were briefed on the history of the company, how the sauces are made and the proper ways to store them. They also toured around the factory to get a first-hand experience on the processes of making the sauces. At the end of the tour, each of them received a complimentary small bottle of the sauce.

Amazing Stamps Outing The centre organised an outing to the Singapore Philatelic Museum (SPM). At the museum, the students were briefed on the evolution of stamps in Singapore from the colonial times up to today. There was also an Amazing Race activity in the museum where the students had to find clues hidden around the museum. Finally, they created their own stamp and the best design received a goodie bag from the museum!

Festive Programmes Hari Raya Puasa – (5th July 2017) To celebrate the end of the fasting month for our Muslim students, the centre organised a mini feast for all our students to enjoy together. It was a joyous celebration of forgiveness, fellowship and food!

National Day – (10th August 2017) The National Day Celebration which took place on 10th August 2017 was a joyous occasion to commemorate the day Singapore gained her independence. The students had a National Day sing-along session and sang classics such as “Home” and even got on their feet to exercise as part of the GetActive! Singapore 2017 campaign!

Christmas Day Celebration – (22nd December 2017) Students learnt that Christmas is an annual festival commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ. This is observed on December 25th as a religious and cultural celebration among billions of people around the world. At the same time, students also learnt that Christmas is also a season of giving and sharing.
