What starts here changes our community, and it starts with you. As our community continues to grow, so do the challenges we face. We need your help to meet these needs. Canoeing, campfires, swimming, oh my! At Camp Classen we put an emphasis on learning skills, developing character and making friends. Campers become a community as they learn how to be more independent, and how to contribute to a group as they engage in physical, social and educational activities. Camping teaches self-reliance, a love for nature and the outdoors and the development of attitudes and practices that build character and leadership, all in a fantastic camping environment. “The first hour of practice is for the kids to learn and develop skills,” Estabraq explains. “Then the parents join in for a scrimmage and the real fun begins.” When it’s game time, it truly is a family affair. While Estabraq is busy coaching the team, Nassil is busy on the sidelines cheering them on. “I know all of the kids’ names so I can cheer for them individually. I go a little crazy. It’s just so exciting!” The family fun doesn’t end there. Estabraq and the girls love to

They try to go to the Earlywine Park pool at least once a week. “When we swim, we get on dad’s back and pretend he’s a horse,” Hala and Lamar explain while dad nods and chuckles. “It’s our favorite part.” “The YMCA is a safe place for our kids,” Nassil says. “We can go in and let them explore and not worry about their safety. and YWCA in Lebanon, they knew they could find comfort in a YMCA near their new home. The outgoing family of four visited the Earlywine Park YMCA and within minutes of walking in, knew this was a place where they could grow together. “We walked in and we noticed that everyone looked different from each other; it felt comfortable,” Nassil explains. “Everyone was kind and helpful, we knew this was a place for us.” Wanting to become more involved, Estabraq became a volunteer soccer coach. A former Iraq National Volleyball player, he’s a natural athlete. He coaches his daughter’s team and has become a beloved coach to not only the kids, but to the parents as well.

MORE THAN JUST A GYM

With the help of her personal trainer, Penny makes her way around the equipment to the exercise balls. She carefully sits down and rolls back. “Form is everything,” she says to her trainer with a chuckle. Then she begins her round of sit-ups. Her trainer counts her down, “three, two, one…you did it, great job!” For Penny a personal trainer isn’t a luxury, it’s a necessity. Various medical conditions have affected Penny’s mobility. At one point she was in a wheelchair for two years, on the brink of death. She and her doctor decided that wasn’t going to happen. After medical treatment, Penny was advised to begin a strength-training regimen, and that’s exactly what she did.

Penny spends one hour, three days a week with her trainer at the YMCA Healthy Living Center – INTEGRIS. She works her way around various strength machines and free weights. Her form is on point and her trainer is with her every step of the way. “We have fun. We spend time together and we’ve found we have things in common, so we talk about those things and joke with each other.” Each day she goes to the HLC, Penny is working on her goals. “The HLC is the secret to my success. Without Angela and Sara leading an amazing team, this would just be a building with four walls. They are the heart of the HLC. They value each of us as individuals and I appreciate that.” Although her path to getting strong and healthy hasn’t been easy, Penny is determined to continue reaching new goals and living life to the fullest through her community at the HLC. “The Y gives me life.” Back on the machines, Penny gets in her steady stance, grabs a hold of the bar, and begins working her triceps. She goes at a pace that is comfortable for her, slowly breathes in and out, with her trainer encouraging her with every pull. On her last pull of the bar she says

THERE’S A Y IN EVERY FAMILY She laces up her greave, drops her chain mail over her head, attaches her gorget and places her helm on her head. High atop her horse, she grasps her shield with one hand and her lance in the other. With a yell from her opponent they are off. Racing toward each other at full speed, she drops her lance and hits his shield with a mighty force. Earning her place in the jousting arena was no easy feat. After serving as a squire for a time, Amy knew she wanted to be part of the fight, with a squire of her own. The taunts from her naysayers only fueled Amy’s determination to earn a spot in the arena.

“I continued to strengthen my muscles and build my endurance. I got back on my horse and became more and more confident with my equipment.” Now an integral part of the show as Dame Eden, Amy not only jousts, but sword fights as well. “I fight with Kindness, Patience and Mercy…my swords. Growing up my mom always told me that when others are mean to first kill them with kindness and if that doesn’t work, show them patience and if that still doesn’t work, show them mercy. It just made sense to name my swords in the same way.” While the fighting is for show, the strength needed is all too real. With new swords, axes and armor comes the need to increase strength and endurance. Amy continues to train at the Y to maintain her strength and prevent injuries. “I chose the Y because they provide machines, weights and space to build a workout that fits my needs. The staff and other members are friendly and helpful. And most of all, they offer a family membership at a fair price. My kids can workout in a safe environment and my youngest can go upstairs and work on homework or hangout with staff members who have become his mentors.” “Without the Y, I would not be able to workout with my family and gain strength to do what I love.”
