THE Y. SO MUCH MORE.

â„¢

GETTING IS GOOD. GIVING IS BETTER. While YMCA membership fees allow the Y to be a gathering place in our community, your donation gives us the power to make that community stronger. It powers critical programs outside of our walls and allows all of our neighbors the opportunity to have a Y experience. We have an extraordinary opportunity to ensure a brighter future for our community. But we can’t do it without your help.

Donate today, for a better us tomorrow.

YOUTH DEVELOPMENT Beyond the classroom, the Y is here to help provide opportunities for youth to learn new skills, understand community, discover healthy options, develop new friendships, think critically, gain leadership skills and interact with positive adult role models.

HEALTHY LIVING More than just working out, healthy living at the Y means a gathering place for those with like interests, a place for families to build stronger bonds and achieve balance, a built-in support system and a place to help prevent, delay or live better with chronic health conditions.

SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY Outside of our walls, we are working side-by-side with our neighbors to create change. From building partnerships to address community needs, to providing volunteer opportunities through member-led Togetherhood projects, to supporting Ys beyond our borders and advocating for our communities, we are creating positive social change. BUILDING COMMUNITY Injuries and illness can make everyday life hard. And when you experience both, it can turn your world upside down. After living through a horrific car accident, where she lost her right arm and suffered multiple fractures and lacerations, Kim was determined to bounce back. She went through two years of physical therapy to learn how to use her body and adjust to her new form. A few years later Kim became a mom to a beautiful baby girl, Kennedy. Things were good for a while, then Kim’s mom noticed that Kennedy wasn’t developing at a typical pace. Through genetic testing, it was determined that Kennedy has a rare disorder affecting

her X chromosome, causing her to be developmentally delayed. Working through how to adjust to life with a child with special needs, Kim got into a routine to provide the best life possible for her and Kennedy. Then, more news hit, Kim was diagnosed with breast cancer. While she fought hard against the cancer, she also fell into a depression and she wasn’t herself. That’s when she learned about the Y and some of the programs we offer. Kim came to the Y, signed up for a membership and received a scholarship. She tried a variety of classes, started getting into a groove and decided to participate in LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA, a cancer survivor program.

“It didn’t take long for me to feel like I belonged, and I started making friends and trying new classes, including water aerobics,” Kim says. “I found that it was easy to make friends and the staff and instructors are welcoming and supportive.” Even better, Kennedy attends Child Watch while Kim works out. Kennedy is able to engage with staff and spend time doing the things she loves in a sensory friendly environment, while Kim gets a break and can focus on her health and friendships. “The Y has been a life-saving place for me and Kennedy.”

BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS If you’re looking for motivation when you enter the Guthrie Y, then Quinton is your man. With a smile that lights up the room and a contagious laugh, you can’t help but get excited when he’s around. Ask any of his group exercise classmates and they’ll agree. Quinton isn’t your typical member. He has a genetic disorder, Fragile X Syndrome, which causes mild to moderate intellectual disabilities. As you can imagine, this can cause barriers in some situations. However, at the Y, everyone has welcomed Quinton to the community.

“Everyone here accepts him like he is,” says Grace, Quinton’s mom. “When we first came in, I thought ‘what are they going to think of him’, but everyone embraced him and didn’t think anything of his differences.” Every afternoon, you can find Quinton in one or more group exercise class, including cycling and BodyPump®. Quinton is not only working on his health at the Y, he’s formed lasting friendships and built a special connection with his buddy Van. They attend cycling together and give each other a hard time, all in good fun of course, and motivate each other to “get after it”.

Quinton has made such an impact on the Guthrie Y community that his friends and classmates threw him a birthday party complete with OSU cupcakes and gifts. The Y has been a great place for Quinton to get out of the house, make friends and work on his health. As his mother watched him gain confidence and become stronger, she joined him at the Y to work on her own health. As a cancer survivor, she’s faced battles that many of us haven’t. Through working out at the Y she’s been able to lower her blood pressure and has become healthier in spirit, mind and body.

BUILDING STRENGTH Looking at 11-year-old Seth you’d never know he faced a life-changing challenge a few years ago that left him in a wheelchair. He started having leg pain and began limping. The limping quickly became more intense and resulted in a stiff leg and not being able to walk without excruciating pain. This is when his mom knew something was terribly wrong. After a few doctor’s visits, it was determined that Seth had Perthes disease, a condition where blood supply to the rounded head of the femur is temporarily disrupted, and without that blood supply, the bone cells die. For a child whose body is growing, this can cause long-lasting issues if not addressed.

The treatment for Perthes can be extreme, but Seth’s family decided to go the more conservative route. Seth needed to be off his feet and have his leg in the proper position to allow for the newly growing bone to form properly in the socket. He was put in leg casts with a bar between them to hold his legs in a wide “V” position. This lasted for seven, very long weeks. Once the casts were removed, Seth wore braces to help with movement and to continue the healing process. A big part of the process was physical therapy. Though they did traditional physical therapy, it was evident other options needed to be integrated into Seth’s routine, and that included swimming. That’s when Seth and his family came to the Y.

“We started by swimming together and doing simple water exercises,” says Robin, Seth’s mom. “Seth got really good, so we signed him up for the Y swim league.” Since then, Seth has mastered a variety of swim strokes and increased his speed to win friendly competitions. “Without the Y, Seth wouldn’t have had a place to do water therapy at an affordable price,” Robin says. “We’ve all been able to enjoy our Y membership. While Seth is swimming, we can exercise to work on our health too.” From the wheelchair, to the walker, to swimming, running and jumping, Seth is a thriving young man and the Y had a part in helping him get there.

YMCA CAMP CLASSEN More than just an overnight summer camp, Camp Classen is host to groups throughout the year, including Adventure Guides, Outdoor Education, visually impaired and special needs groups, family camp and corporate groups. At camp, we put an emphasis on learning new skills, developing character and making friends. Campers become a community as they learn how to be more independent, and to contribute to a group as they engage in physical, social and educational activities.

Nestled in the Arbuckle Mountains, Camp Classen has all the camp classics including campfires, canoeing, archery, swimming, fishing, horseback riding and talent shows. If that wasn’t enough, we also have Gaga Ball, arts and crafts, volleyball and so much more. Whether you’re a Pathfinder or a Trailblazer, or that’s yet to be determined, you belong at Camp Classen.
