Judgment, knowledge, skill, and fitness – the four components of water rescue – form the basis of Bronze Medallion training. In addition, candidates acquire the assessment and problem-solving skills needed to make good decisions in, on, and around the water. Bronze Medallion is a prerequisite for assistant lifeguard training in Bronze Cross

The Lifesaving Society’s Bronze Cross begins the transition from lifesaving to lifeguarding and prepares candidates for responsibilities as assistant lifeguards. Candidates strengthen and expand their lifesaving skills and apply the principles and techniques of active surveillance in aquatic facilities. Bronze Cross emphasizes the importance of teamwork and communication in preventing and responding to aquatic emergencies.
Bronze Cross is a prerequisite for advanced training in the Society’s National Lifeguard and leadership certification programs. Additional Fee Canadian Lifesaving Manual - $40 plus tax. This book is MANDATORY for the class

STANDARD FIRST AID CPR-C/AED
AGE:14Y AND UP
Lifesaving Society Standard First Aid is the most comprehensive first aid program for the general public and a prerequisite for National Lifeguard. Learn how to assess and treat airway, breathing, and circulatory emergencies; and manage medical, musculoskeletal, and environmental emergencies.

Swimmers will continue to develop their strokes in order to be the most efficient as they can be. They will also be doing swim-based workouts in order to work on strengthening their muscles and strokes. This is based on what the swimmers would like to get out of the course. This can range from opportunities to practice lifesaving skills to get ready for future lifeguarding courses, stroke development or endurance.

SPLASHERS/BUBBLERS - AGE: 6M-2Y
Splashers - It is designed to introduce infants to the water, teach parents about water safety, and play water games. Entering and exiting the water, getting the face wet and learning various movement through the water is introduced. Parents are REQUIRED to be in the water with each child.
Bubblers - Designed for infants that are more comfortable in the water and to further teach water safety and play water games. Infants will become acquainted with breath control, floats, surface support and various movements through the water. Parents are REQUIRED to be in the water with each child
BOBBERS/FLOATERS - AGE: 3Y-5Y
Bobbers - Children will be introduced to the water by doing bobs, assisted front floats and back, kicking while holding onto the wall and blowing bubbles.
Floaters - Children will be introduced to the water by doing bobs, assisted front floats and back, kicking while holding onto the wall and blowing bubbles.
GLIDERS/DIVERS - AGE: 3Y-5Y
Gliders - Children will further continue development on their Front and back glides by increasing their endurance. They will be introduced to side breathing, side glide, deep water skills, and accessing EMS.
Divers - Children will further develop all their swimming abilities and increase their endurance. Children will learn front and back swim and swim 10 meters on both sides as well. Children will also learn how to tread water for 10 seconds and learn about boating safety.
SURFERS/JUMPERS - AGE: 3Y-5Y
Surfers - Children will continue to work on advanced deep-water skills, and surface support and be introduced to Front Crawl and Back Crawl.
Jumpers - Children will be introduced to diving into deep water and continue to develop Front Crawl and Back Crawl and eventually be able to swim the whole length of the pool.
LEARN TO SWIM - OTTER - AGE: 6Y - 12Y
Otter teaches children how to stay safe in the pool and develop their swimming skills. During this class, the focus will be on learning how to do front, back and side glides and also learning how to submerge under the water.
LEARN TO SWIM - SEAL/DOLPHIN - AGE: 6Y - 12Y
Seal -Skills learned in Otter will continue to be developed and children’s endurance will be built. During this class, the focus will be on propulsion flutter kick, rolling the body from side to side for streamlined glides through the water and introduction to deep water skills.
Dolphin - Skills such as propulsive flutter kick and endurance will continue to be developed. Children then learn about coordinated breathing to ready themselves for front crawl and back crawl.
SWIMMER - AGE: 6Y - 12Y
Swimmers are introduced to swimming full lengths of the pool. They are introduced to front crawl and back crawl and are in deep water for the majority of the class.
STAR 1 - AGE: 6Y+
Students' further develop their Front Crawl and Back Crawl to initial standards. Students will learn eggbeater, and whip kick on their back for elementary backstroke. Students will also have a 75-meter endurance swim.
STAR - LEVEL 2 & 3 AGE: 6Y+
Star 2 - Students will transition from learning the Whip Kick on their back to learning on their front for breaststroke and continue to develop their front crawl and back crawl and eggbeater. Students will have a 100m endurance swim.
Star 3 - Students will progress their Elementary backstroke and Breast Stroke to intermediate standards, and progress their Front Crawl and Back Crawl to advanced standards. With these progressions, they will continue to build their endurance to tread water for 2 minutes and have a 200m endurance swim.
STAR - 4 & 5 AGE: 6Y+
Star 4 - While Breaststroke and Elementary Backstroke are progressing to advanced standards, sudents will develop scissor kick which will progress into sidestroke. The endurance challenge will increase to a 350m swim.
Star 5 - Butterfly will be the new stroke at this level as they have advanced through all the other strokes. They will learn minor rescue drills by throwing buoyant aid to a swimmer. The endurance challenge increases to a 500m swim.
STAR - 6 AGE:6Y+
Swimmers continue to develop their endurance and lifesaving skills. Students will be introduced to how to teach a class as if they are swim instructors. Basic first aid skills such as checking for hazards, calling for help, treating for shock and treatment of choking are introduced.
ADVANCE STROKE TECHNIQUE - AGE:16+Y AND UP
Swimmers will continue to develop their strokes in order to be the most efficient as they can be. They will also be doing swim-based workouts in order to work on strengthening their muscles and strokes. This is based on what the swimmers would like to get out of the course. This can range from opportunities to practice lifesaving skills to get ready for future lifeguarding courses, stroke development or endurance.
ADULT LEVEL 1 -AGE:16Y AND UP
For adults who are new to swimming. You will learn the basics such as floating, kicking, and submerging yourself under the water and develop your comfort level with the water. You will always be in the shallow end.
ADULT LEVEL 2 & 3 - LEARNING TO SWIM AGE:16Y AND UP
Adults 2:The swimmer has swimming experience and can swim a whole pool length with an aid and by themselves. The swimmer takes charge of what they want to learn by explaining to their instructor what they would like to learn.
Adults 3: The swimmer has swimming experience and can swim a whole length of the pool without an aid and by themselves. The swimmer takes charge of what they want to learn by explaining to their instructor what they would like to learn.

These lessons are student-led and strive to improve swimming abilities and skills for swimmers of all ages. PRIVATE Lessons are a one-on-one lesson.

The YMCA Community Action Network (YCAN) is an innovative national program that engages leaders across Canada to address community needs through service projects. The program, which is part of the Canada Service Corps initiative, supports youth with opportunities to identify and execute a local service project that is meaningful to them. Youth involved will work together to select, lead, deliver, and evaluate a service initiative in their own community.
Are you between the ages of 15-30 and want to make a difference in your community? Do you recognize the needs of your community and have ideas to make a difference? The YMCA Community Action Network (YCAN) is a national program that engages local youth towards addressing a community need through service projects. Youth will be trained and mentored to successfully evaluate, select, lead and deliver service projects by the YCAN Program Coordinator.

The YMCA School Reintegration Program (SRP) is a free three-week program which aims to help students that are facing difficulties in attending school. The aim of this program is to re-establish youth into the school environment and reduce risk of potential relapse through transformational positive experiences; which nurtures personal development, confidence, and independence.
This program is targeted to youth aged 11-18 who are attending school at approximately 20% or less due to any barriers. The School Reintegration Program is offered at the Saskatoon YMCA Fairhaven location.

Are you feeling mild or moderate anxiety? Do you feel isolated? We are here to help!Everyone experiences worries and stress. Y Mind is here to help young people learn how to cope with stress and live a happy life. This free program is run by caring and trained staff in a safe, supportive environment.
Y Mind is a seven-week group program for teens (13–18 years) and youth (18–30 years) who are experiencing symptoms of mild-to-moderate anxiety or stress. Participants learn and practise evidence-based strategies to help manage anxiety. Complete this form to learn more:

The YMCA Youth Transitions Program (YTP) is a free voluntary program for youth ages 12-22. It provides guidance and support youth need as they transition into adulthood. YTP offers life skills workshops such as Anger Management, How to Adult, Learning to Breathe and You Can Go. The Youth Transitions Program also offers one to one support, peer mentorship and a Homework Club every Tuesday. Homework Club is great for youth in need of homework or employment support. Level 1:
Level 1 provides participants with choreographed programming to follow and learn from. The level 1 certification will allow instructor to teach the provided choreographed programming at the YMCA of Saskatoon for up to 6 months. Level 1 certifications do not grant participants the ability to teach at non-YMCA locations. If participants would like to design their own classes, they will need to continue on and obtain their Aquafit Instructor Level 2 certification.

This level advances the instructor’s ability to develop choreography, class design, and further enhance their ability to provide feedback and movement modifications to their participants. The Personal Training Certification Course teaches the necessary knowledge and skills needed to assess participants and create safe, effective and appropriate programs. Participants in this course will learn the principles and correct application of strength and cardiovascular conditioning, a wide variety of specific exercises and fundamental assessment skills, the fundamentals of coaching and basic business practices for fitness professionals.
There are written and practical components in this course.

LOW INTENSITY CLASSES - Though classes are labelled Low Intensity, it does not mean that you will not be working hard!
Aquafit: An energetic, low impact class that uses the water's resistance to increase muscular strength while maximizing your cardiovascular system.
Nordic Walking : Participants will learn how to properly use the poles to engage their upper body muscles while walking, which can provide a full-body workout and improve balance and coordination. Wee go outside and walk for 20-30 minutes with poles, then back to the YMCA and do some balance, strength, core, and stretch exercises.
Zumba: Try this high-energy, fun, Latin danced-based, calorie-burning cardio workout!
Synergy: Synergy Class is a multimodal group fitness class that challenges you physically and mentally while making fitness fun! This circuit training interval class uses Synergy 360 and other equipment pieces. Adaptations for all fitness levels can be provided."
Fit Full Body: Full body interval training that focuses on cardio, core, and strength. All functional movements are designed to build strength and confidence so that daily activities can be done safely and with ease.
Y-Cycle: Cardiovascular interval exercise deigned to provide you with optimal fat burning and strength training
Yoga: A physical and mental practice that focuses in relieving stress, supporting good health habits, improving balance and flexibility and relieving tension throughout the body.
Y-Fit Circuit: High-intensity, fast-paced workout that involve moving your way around different exercise stations performing each exercise to help tone your body.

Rob Friedt: Rob specializes in functional training using kettlebells, TRX, ropes, etc. He’s here to encourage, motivate, and guide you through your health and fitness journey, whether increasing strength and muscle, improving your sport, losing weight, or just feeling and moving better. With years of experience in individual and group training, Rob is certified through the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and CanFitPro and is a YMCAcertified Group Fitness Leader.
Peggy Anderson: Peggy has been involved in sports and activities from a young age. From dance to softball to synchronized swimming, both an athlete and a coach. She began volunteering as a fitness instructor at the Y in early 2015 and taught boot camp, strength and conditioning, synergy and cycle classes. She was certified as a Spin instructor in the early months of 2019. In 2019 she was certified as a personal trainer at the Y. Peggy’s primary interest is functional fitness, and her goal is to support and encourage people of all ages to live a healthy, active lifestyle.

JUDO
"Judo" is made of two Japanese words: “je” and “do”. Ju means “gentle,” and do means “the way,” so put together, the word “Judo” literally translates to “the gentle way”. Thedevelopment of character, mind, and body. Judo is fun, safe, social, active, and provides a positive learning environment. It also helps build confidence and coordination andpromotes anti-bullying and self-protection.

KENDO - June 7 - Aug 30
Ages 12+ Wednesdays 7:00 - 9:00 PM Maximum 20 participants KENDO will not be taking any registration for the Spring and Summer sessions. They will re-open their registration for the Fall session in September 2023
Wado Kai Karate
Family and Beginner Class All ages (7 and under are required to have a guardian present) NO PROGRAM THIS SUMMER
This class will focus on traditional Shintani Wado-Kai Karate techniques, developing confidence, basic self-defence skills, body-spatial awareness, and beginner sports techniques and tactics.
Adult All Levels and Youth Advanced – Ages 13+ OR orange belt or higher NO PROGRAM THIS SUMMER
This class will be split in two; advanced techniques and a beginner adult class (ages 13+) with focuses on advanced Shintani Wado-Kai Karate techniques, self-defence (combat), fitness training, sports tactics, and introduce Shindo techniques (short staff).
*Belt colour order: white-yellow-orange-green-blue-brown-black*

All participants must register through the YMCA of Saskatoon. An additional Club fee is required. An annual fee will be collected online via www.shintani.ca
The Saskatoon Seals Underwater Hockey (UWH) Club is a safe, non-contact sport played between two teams at the bottom of a pool. Players maneuver a weighted puck along the bottom of the pool into the opposing team’s goal using 12-inch sticks shaped like car window ice-scrapers. Players hold their breath and dive to the bottom of the pool to push, pass or steal the puck from opponents.
UWH is an exhilarating sport that gives you an incredible cardio workout and will leave you literally breathless at times! We have had players from 8 years old to 75 years old and of all shapes and sizes. We welcome all potential players of any ability or skill level, players use a mask, fins & snorkel and we teach you how to use them. Come on out & try!
