Weight and Cardio Room Guidelines

The YMCA wants to ensure that youth have a safe environment to exercise.

Youth ages 10-12 must be accompanied by someone 18+ in the Cardio and Weight Room.

Youth ages 13-15 in the Weight and Cardio room using the "buddy system" at all times (Buddy System = two or more people working out together that are ages 13 and up).

Youths ages 16 and above are allowed in both areas.

Fitness Disclaimer

You should consult your physician or other health care professional before starting any fitness program/class to determine if it is right for your needs, especially if you have pre-existing injuries or medical conditions.

Do not start any fitness program/class if your physician or health care provider advises against it.

Rob Friedt

Rob specializes in functional training using kettlebells, TRX, ropes, etc. Functional fitness includes movements such as walking, pushing, pulling, bending, squatting, lunging, and core. He’s here to encourage, motivate, and guide you through your health and fitness journey, whether increasing strength and muscle, improving your sport, losing weight, or just feeling and moving better. With years of experience in individual and group training, Rob is certified through the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and CanFitPro and is a YMCA-certified Group Fitness Leader.

Growing up around sports, Paul developed a passion for fitness that he loves to share with anyone who will listen. Coming from an athletic background, Paul loves helping people with programs based on functionality and increasing quality of life. He has worked with a wide cross-section of athletes and has trained everyone from retirees to high-performance athletes. Paul is the Fitness Manager at the YMCA of Saskatoon where he works to keep all the Y programs running smoothly. He can help you on your fitness journey and achieve your goals.

Fitness Instructor Training (FIT)

Aquafit Instructor Certification Ages 16+

Level 1:

Level 1 provides participants with choreographed programming to follow and learn from. The Level 1 Certification will allow an instructor to teach the provided choreographed programming at the YMCA of Saskatoon for up to 6 months. Level 1 Certification does NOT grant participants the ability to teach at non-YMCA locations.

In-person and registration dates: TBA

Level 2:

This level advances the instructor’s ability to develop choreography and class design and further enhances their ability to provide feedback and movement modifications to their participants. The Level 2 Certification allows the instructor to design and teach their own modified classes within YMCA and non-YMCA facilities.

Yoga Instructor Course –Ages 16+

In the YMCA Yoga Instructor Course, participants will learn how to be a YMCA Yoga Instructor, History and Philosophy, Pranayama – Breath Regulation, Asanas and Teaching Skills.

Member: $250

Non-Member: $300

Floaters:

Gliders:

Divers: floats and back floats, kicking while holding on to the wall and blowing bubbles.

Children will continue to develop their front and back floats unassisted and be introduced to front and back glide assisted.

Children will further develop their front and back glides by increasing their endurance. Children will also learn how to breathe on their side using side glide, be introduced to deep water skills and how to access EMS.

Children will further develop all their swimming abilities and increase their endurance. Children will learn front and back swim and swim 10 meters on both sides as well. Children will also learn how to tread water for 10 seconds and learn about boating safety.

Surfers: Children will continue to work on advanced deep-water skills, and surface support and be introduced to Front Crawl and Back Crawl.

Jumpers: Children will be introduced to diving into deep water and continue to develop Front Crawl and Back Crawl and eventually be able to swim the whole length of the pool.

Star 4:

Students further develop their Front Crawl and Back Crawl to initial standards. Students will learn eggbeater, and whip kick on their back for elementary backstroke. Students will also have a 75-meter endurance swim.

Students will transition from learning the Whip Kick on their back to learning on their front for breaststroke and continue to develop their front crawl, back crawl and eggbeater. Students will have a 100m endurance swim.

Students will progress their Elementary backstroke and breaststroke to intermediate standards, and progress their Front Crawl and Back Crawl to advanced standards. With these progressions, they will continue to build their endurance to tread water for 2 minutes and have a 200m endurance swim.

While Breaststroke and Elementary Backstroke are progressing to advanced standards, students will develop scissor kicks which will progress into sidestroke. The endurance challenge will increase to a 350m swim.

Adult (15+ yrs)

Adult 1: For Adults new to swimming. Learn the basics and develop water comfort. Always in the shallow end.

Adult 2: Adult 3: For adults who have experience in swimming and can swim a whole length of the pool by themselves with an aid.

For adults who have experience in swimming and can swim a whole length of the pool by themselves without aid.

Advanced Stroke Technique:

Swimmers will continue to develop their strokes in order to be as efficient as they can be. They will also be doing swim-based workouts in order to work on strengthening their muscles and strokes. This is based on what the swimmers would like to get out of the course. This can range from opportunities to practice lifesaving skills to getting ready for future lifeguarding courses, stroke development, or endurance.

Requirements: 13+ or have completed Bronze Star Bronze Medallion challenges the candidate both mentally and physically. Judgment, knowledge, skill, and fitness – the four components of water rescue – form the basis of Bronze Medallion training. In addition, candidates acquire the assessment and problem-solving skills needed to make good decisions in, on, and around the water. Bronze Medallion is a prerequisite for assistant lifeguard training in Bronze Cross.

Lifesaving Society of Canada

Bronze Cross

m lifesaving to lifeguarding and prepares candidates for responsibilities as assistant lifeguards. Candidates strengthen and expand their lifesaving skills and apply the principles and techniques of active surveillance in aquatic facilities. Bronze Cross emphasizes the importance of teamwork and communication in preventing and responding to aquatic emergencies. Bronze Cross is a prerequisite for advanced training in the Society’s National Lifeguard and leadership certification programs

Lifesaving Society of Canada National Lifeguard Full Course

The National Lifeguard (NLS) award builds on the fundamental skills, knowledge, and values taught in the lifesaving awards of the Lifesaving Society to develop the practical skills and knowledge required by lifeguards. Recognized as the standard measurement of lifeguard performance in Canada, National Lifeguard Award education is designed to develop a sound understanding of lifeguarding principles, good judgment, and a mature and responsible attitude toward the role of the lifeguard

Requirements: Ages: 15+

Must have proof of Bronze Cross (Does not need to be current) and current Standard First Aid CPR-C

Members: $148.55

Non-members: $193.75

The first two classes in the September and January terms are free introductory classes also known as Open House. People can come and try Kendo without the need for a Y membership or a day pass, although they must have a photo ID as per the Y's policy.

Judo Drop-ins – YMCA membership is not a MUST however Drop-in rates is required. Participants who do not have YMCA membership will need to pay the drop-in rates according to our membership fees.

Judo Saskatchewan requires that ALL judo athletes, regardless of age, MUST pay a CLUB fee. This information is provided at the beginning of the session.

Little Warriors - Ages 5-7 Thursdays 6:15 - 7:00 pm

Little Warriors is an activity-based karate class for younger students. This class will run concurrently with our family class and students will start and end in the main gym. This class will provide an introduction to karate skills for younger students not yet ready for the structure of the family class. Students ready to participate in the family class will be invited on a case-bycase basis.

We accept New Beginners in September and January ONLY, at the start of the session. Students with previous Karate experience may join at any time join at any time.

An additional Club fee (annual fee) is required and will be collected in class.

Did you know that the YMCA offers the public to rent spaces for personal or group use?

Bookings can be made at least one week in advance for the Gymnasium, Multipurpose Rooms 1 & and 2, Racquetball Courts, Squash Courts, Studio and Swimming Pool.

There is limited availability on Private Bookings. Please book well ahead. Bookings must be cancelled 48 hours before the booking occurs to receive a refund.

Blackstrap Day Camp

At the YMCA Blackstrap Camp, we provide a space that is perfect for the outdoor enthusiast and adventure seeker. Our goal is for your child to have a unique and positive camp experience that they will carry with them long after the summer is over.

Buses will pick up children at designated locations around the city between 8 – 8:30 am, they will be bused out for the day and will return to their bus stop between 4 – 4:30 pm.

Summer Camp Financial Assistance (starting January 2025)

The YMCA of Saskatoon believes the principle that those who are able to pay for programs should do so, but the inability to pay should not be a barrier to participation. Through the generosity of our donors, we are able to provide financial assistance to those who are unable to pay for programming.

The Saskatoon Early Years Family Resource Centre is a welcoming space where young children from prenatal to age 5 and their parents and caregivers can bond, learn, and grow together. No cost for families to visit the Centre. All programs are free.
