WHY THE Y? YMCA OF SOUTH HAMPTON ROADS 2011 Annual Report
YMCA FRIENDS, Why the Y? Take a look at the faces in this year’s annual report and you’ll know the answer. The Y is about community—people of all ages and from all walks of life working together, having fun and discovering, some for the very first time, the healthy person inside. This year at the Y, members from all across our region took advantage of new programs, new locations and a whole new level of support for finding and maintaining physical and spiritual health. Last winter, we introduced the latest in web-based wellness tools and made it easier than ever to set and meet personal goals. This winter, we unveiled brand-new, state-of-the-art cardio equipment at every Y and gave you our promise to be there as your cheerleader, coach and friend. We saw major returns on our ongoing investment in youth development, too. Our teen leaders program grew by leaps and bounds last year and continues to produce active, principled young leaders who are making a difference in their schools, homes and communities. It takes more than a village to raise a child or give a busy family a break. It takes an entire region. Thanks to the entrepreneurial vision of local and regional partners and our own dedicated army of Y volunteers, 2011 saw the opening of a beautiful new Y in Currituck, the completion of an amazing new regional day camp and family center in Suffolk and the beginning stages of a Y on Granby Street to serve youth
and families in central Norfolk. And there’s more on the horizon as we join hands with neighbors and friends in Virginia Beach to work on the development of a new Y for the Princess Anne community. With the bright, fresh colors of the new Y brand in place, Wifi in every location and a new online blog and social media presence, the Y continues to keep pace with the times and the way people live, work, play and communicate today. In 2012, we’ll introduce a new YMCA of South Hampton Roads mobile app. Watch for it! Five years ago, the Y served 125,000 area residents. Last year, we served 250,000 through Y programs and community services. Despite difficult economic times nationwide, our financial health is secure. And thanks to the generosity of donors and partners like you, our promise to make sure everyone has access to the lifechanging benefits of the Y is solid. We’re excited about the coming year and our role in making it a good one for everyone. Why the Y? To encourage and inspire the spirit, mind and body of every child, teen and adult in our region—that’s why!
Charles E. Harris President and CEO
Walter R. Potter Board Chairman
Helping youth discover their potential We believe in kids at the Y and the power of fun, positive environments where youth of all ages can learn, share and grow. The Y is a safe, welcoming place for kids with activities and experiences that change and grow as they do. From early learning programs and after-school care to summer camp and swim lessons, the Y helps kids and teens develop confidence, healthy living habits and the ability to make good decisions—skills that last a lifetime. • 22,000 youth gained life skills through The First Tee of Hampton Roads programming, including lessons, camps, access to our mobile learning center and national schools. • 1,770 youth had a memorable camp experience at YMCA Camp Silver Beach, including 183 kids who were able to participate thanks to generous donations to We Build People.
• 100 children who had a parent currently/recently deployed or were dependents of Wounded Warriors attended a week at YMCA Camp Silver Beach thanks to the Army Reserve Enrichment Camp; 120 children were given a fun-filled week at camp thanks to a generous grant from the Navy SEAL Foundation.
“Camp has taught me to be accepting of people who aren’t like me, to go out of my way to be friendly, and try things I’d never be able to do. Camp has most definitely made me a better person.” –Sara, age 14
Exploration
LEADERSHIP
OPPORTUNITY
The excitement is building. The Y’s new regional summer day camp and year-round retreat facility in Suffolk opens next summer. Located on “55 acres of fun,” Camp Arrowhead has it all—Alpine Tower, outdoor pool, challenge course, nature trails, sports fields and more. The beauty of nature in an environment of fun, caring and respect—no one does camp like the Y.
Our teen leaders are team builders, role models and dedicated volunteers. Last year, our largest group ever attended Blue Ridge Leaders’ School in North Carolina and brought home new ways to reach others through fun, fitness, friendship and service.
This past summer 65 youth living in the Broad Creek and Park Place communities of Norfolk put their talent to the test in a musical production of Peter Pan. This production, along with learning life skills, is all part of the Escape to the Arts program, which is a fast-paced, six-week camp that introduces the children to performing arts.
Making healthy living possible for everyone Good health is more than just exercising or building muscle. At the Y, it’s about exercising individual potential for building spirit, mind and body. People grow stronger at the Y and so do family bonds through fitness, sports, friendships and fun. At every age and every stage of life, members will find resources and support for healthy living—and the motivation and inspiration to make it a lifetime adventure. • 178,143 people visited a YMCA of South Hampton Roads family center in 2011. • 19,486 members benefited from the Y’s FitQuest program, including individual coaching, goal setting and healthy activity.
• 2,379 members developed healthy lifestyles through Y-Change, a small support group program, led by a coach trained to meet the needs of those seeking to be more healthy.
“The YMCA took more than just the weight off my body, it took the weight off my heart, my mind, my spirit. I’m lighter in every way that matters—and surrounded by friends who celebrate with me –Melissa, Y member every day.”
WELCOME
ACCESSIBLE
INCLUSIVE
Strengthened by county partners, the new Currituck Y will serve a region whose access has been limited. Our newest Y will be fully operational in 2012 with an extensive roster of youth sports, swim lessons, programs for seniors, family fitness activities and more.
An innovative new web-based fitness tool provides ongoing variety and accessibility for workouts. FitQuest powered by ActivTrax uses member input on goals, workout preferences, equipment and exercise experience to customize nutrition and workout plans for use at the Y or at home.
The James L. Camp, Jr. Family YMCA has been the social hub for Franklin’s tight-knit community for over half a century. Major pool and facility renovations were completed in late 2011 to make room for new activities and opportunities for those who count on the Y every day.
Keeping communities safe and connected At the Y, we link arms with members, volunteers and community partners to help improve the quality of life for everyone in our region. Whether it’s coming up with innovative nutrition and fitness programs to combat youth obesity, staying engaged with our members and community through the Y’s blog, or opening new and renewed facilities to provide healthy outlets for more people, the Y is always moving forward to make sure every child, teen, adult and senior has a chance to do the same. • 650 people developed healthy habits through the Activate Eastern Shore program. • 1,008 at-risk youth were given a nurturing learning environment through YMCA Early Adventures and YMCA Early Discoveries.
“They genuinely care. They’re not here to sell you something. They just want you to be healthy.” –Erica, financial assistance recipient
• $5.9 million in financial assistance was awarded to 24,741 individuals and families in our community in need of YMCA services, who might otherwise not have been able to participate.
EMPOWERMENT
ACCOMPLISHMENT
Partnership
Swim lessons safely develop skills and confidence in the water. Over 300 four-year olds with risk factors, from six Virginia Beach elementary schools received free swim lessons through the Splish Splash program, which is made possible by generous donations to the We Build People annual giving campaign.
A bold community partnership on the Eastern Shore brought the Y and area businesses, health providers and schools together to tackle the region’s higher than average rates of obesity-related disease. Activate Eastern Shore inspired and motivated all residents to get moving and get healthy.
A sharing of cultures between campers, staff and our international guest counselors took place this past summer when Brazilian teens from the São Paulo YMCA assisted with summer day camp. This international partnership with the Associacao Crista de Mocos (YMCA) in São Paulo, Brazil brings education, service to others and new friendships to our youth each summer.

Imagine the Possibilities CAMPAIGN The transformation of the 55-acre property in Suffolk into a world-class Regional Day Camp & Family Center is nearing completion. Gifts of $2 million, including a $1 million gift from the Dominion Foundation, enabled us to purchase the former Hampton Roads Youth Center. Construction on an indoor/outdoor eight-lane pool and bathhouse, pavilion, climbing tower, archery range, amphitheatre, and multiple group shelters as well as renovating the 9,900 square-foot building have been a part of this transformation. Plans also include a community garden where children will grow their own vegetables and share the harvest with the community. The new facility will open in June 2012 and initially serve 300–400 summer campers per day. The facility is currently being used for holiday camp during the school year, group rentals, YMCA family events, and company, church, and civic group outings. If you interested in investing in this project, please contact Rick Matthews at (757) 934-9622. James L. Camp, Jr. Family YMCA
One of the most important campaign goals for 2011 was the development of The Y on Granby Family & Child Development Center. Leading gifts from Dominion Enterprises, Hampton Roads Community Foundation and the Alison J. and Ella W. Parsons Fund of the Hampton Roads Community Foundation, coupled with a grant from the City of Norfolk, are bringing this dream to reality.
The Board of Directors would like to thank the following for their gifts to capital projects, including recent renovations to the Interactive Zone and locker rooms, a new hot tub and sauna, on-going capital expenditures and YMCA outreach programs that benefit the community.
Construction is scheduled to begin in mid-2012. This facility will serve communities adjacent to the Virginia Zoo in Norfolk as well as residents in the greater Norfolk area, promoting diversity in the community. The Child Development Center, a collaboration with the Presbyterian Children’s Homes and Services, will help children reach their fullest Godgiven potential, focusing on strengthening the family and more fully on youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. YMCA of South hampton roads endowment fund Earnings from the Paul C. Harris Memorial YMCA Camp Silver Beach Scholarship Fund and other endowment funds sent 13 children to YMCA Camp Silver Beach in the summer of 2011. Several of the children were from hardworking families who had simply fallen on hard times; others were in foster care or lived with a family member. As a result, some of the children who came to YMCA Camp Silver Beach felt that nobody cared about them. But counselors and staff showed them that someone cares by giving them love and attention in a fun and nurturing environment. One family in particular benefitted from the YMCA’s endowment. The child was living with his grandmother because his father was in jail and his mother was no longer involved in his life. The relationship with his grandmother was becoming more strained and she was on the verge of kicking him out of her home. His high school football coach learned of his hardships and knew he needed to intervene. At the end of the school year, this broken, insecure young man came to live with the
coach and his family. The coach’s wife and three children instantly embraced the 16-year old and he immediately adopted them into his heart. One of the first concerns for the family was helping the young man develop a brotherly bond with their oldest son, a rising freshman in high school. Not only had the son lost his status as the oldest sibling, but he also had to share a room and his life with someone he didn’t know. The boys were given the opportunity to attend Teen Camp at YMCA Camp Silver Beach for three weeks. The generosity of donors provided them with scholarship funding for two of the weeks. Extended family and friends covered the cost of the third week. Counselors reached out to the boys individually and together. The 16-year old who had experienced numerous hardships was told he was a leader with a future and he believed it! When the boys returned home the family noticed a new bond but the depth of that bond was not fully realized until a social worker visited their home. Standing in the midst of their typical messy teenage room, the social
worker asked the biological son, “So have the two of you become friends?” He replied instantly, “Friends? We’re brothers.” At camp you have the chance to bond with other girls and boys and are mentored by their counselors. It proved to be a pivotal moment for the newly blended family. To quote the boys’ mother; “There is something magical about YMCA Camp Silver Beach. The staff there saw something special in our new son, just as we did and we all are just selfish enough to want to be a part of his life. Thank you, YMCA Camp Silver Beach!” In 2011, the YMCA endowment also supported financial assistance at the Blocker Norfolk Family YMCA, Suffolk Family YMCA, Eastern Shore Family YMCA, Outer Banks Family YMCA and the many programs of The First Tee of Hampton Roads and YMCA Community Services. If you are interested in leaving a legacy through a gift to the endowment, please contact our Development Office at (757) 962-5510.
