Mission: To put Judeo-Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all.

Letter from the President Greetings, Welcome to Inside Your YMCA, your source for information about what’s new at your YMCA. This member magazine is ready to help you make the most of your membership. In case you haven’t heard, for the first time in 43 years, the YMCA unveiled a new brand strategy this past July to increase the understanding and scope of the impact we are making in communities. Through its new brand strategy, the YMCA will extend its reach into communities to nurture the potential of youth and teens, improve the nation’s health and well-being and provide opportunities to support neighbors. It’s an exciting time for the organization and soon you will begin seeing a new way in which the YMCA communicates our message. While still formally known as the YMCA, we will refer to ourselves just as you have been for years, as “the Y.” Despite the name change, we remain committed to our heritage as evidenced in our Mission: to put JudeoChristian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all. Over the course of the next year, you’ll begin to see and hear just how your YMCA of South Hampton Roads will begin embracing our new brand revitalization.

This fall we will continue working on exciting new projects including, a Regional Summer Day Camp and Family Center at Kenyon Road in Suffolk. A full-day camping experience for boys and girls, ages 5–15, the camp will bring environmental education to life, as youth experience the beauty of nature through handson activities in the camp garden, forested area and throughout the 55-acre site. The camp is scheduled to open in the summer of 2011. Lastly, the YMCA of South Hampton Roads is proud to announce the continued sponsorship of McDonald’s, a proponent of educating and encouraging healthy eating habits to our children. Enjoy this edition and discover the many ways you and your loved ones will enjoy being a part of our YMCA family! If you would like to share your story to inspire others or see an article about a particular YMCA program in Inside Your YMCA, contact the Membership Director at your YMCA. We appreciate your feedback. In good health, Chuck Harris President/CEO YMCA of South Hampton Roads

America On the Move Day September 26, 2–4 pm Celebrate your first steps to living a healthy lifestyle at the YMCA’s America On the Move Day on September 26. All YMCA of South Hampton Roads family centers will offer families opportunities to participate in healthy activities between 2–4 pm. This event is free and open to the public. Come out and celebrate being healthy and active members of the community!

Activate America! Activate America is the YMCA’s answer to combating our nation’s growing health crisis by encouraging regular exercise, eating healthy and leading a more active lifestyle. The urgent challenge facing all Americans to find a healthier lifestyle demands a fundamentally new and aggressive social response. Each of us must take charge and help our children and families take responsibility for healthy living. No single organization can effectively solve the nation’s chronic disease crisis but collectively, all sectors of our communities and nation must come together to advance a common strategy to remove the barriers and increase the opportunities for physical activity and healthy eating for all. America On the Move is one event that your YMCA focuses on in helping you to lead a healthier lifestyle. The 3-week challenge begins on September 6 and concludes on September 26. Every

member of your family is encouraged to participate and exercise together! It’s simply a matter of exercising a minimum of 3 times a week for the 3 weeks and logging your activity in FitLinxx. At the conclusion, every member who accomplishes the challenge will receive a reward. Join others at your local YMCA for America On the Move Family Day. This event, held at every YMCA of South Hampton Roads family center, will take place on Sunday, September 26 from 2–4 pm and is free and open to everyone in the community. What better way to spend a Sunday afternoon than with your family and others at the YMCA! Family friendly activities including physical movement and healthy snacks will be offered. If you haven’t participated in a Y-Change class, there’s no better time than the present. There are hundreds of success stories that Y members have shared with us once they’ve completed their

Y-Change journey. It’s amazing how much change can happen in such a short period when you get the support and structure from a Y-change class. If you haven’t accomplished your healthy lifestyle goals like you wish you had, this class is for you. Organized in short 6-week segments, you’ll meet 3 times a week with a small group of others who also are trying to develop more healthy habits. You’ll get together for both seminars and exercise sessions. Several of our YMCAs are offering specialized Y-Change classes like Y-Change Older Adults, Teens or Families. Check out the location closest to you. If we all focus on increasing our activity levels and eating healthier, we can make a difference in providing a healthier future for ourselves and our children.

Projects in Progress In June 2010, the YMCA of South Hampton Roads purchased the 55-acre property at 275 Kenyon Road in Suffolk, VA. This purchase was based on our vision to develop a regional camp and family center serving Suffolk, Franklin and the greater South Hampton Roads area in order to enrich the lives of 400 children ages 5–15 per week. Opening next summer, YMCA Day Camp takes you back to tradition—an exciting full-day camping experience for boys and girls. Swimming, camp songs, environmental education, family nights, conservation awareness and archery are just a few of the ways we build traditions. Through this project, environmental education comes to life, as youth will experience the beauty of nature through hands-on activities in our camp garden, forested area and throughout the 55acre site. Addressing the importance of the ecosystem, conservation, recycling and how to live a green lifestyle, it is our

goal to develop campers’ awareness of their role in the environment, as well as their appreciation for the outdoors.

Company/Church, Civic Group Outings Church Retreats and Team-Building/ Obstacle Course Training.

As well as a Day Camp, we will also be utilizing and offering the setting for a variety of other activities and programs such as Holiday Camp, Group Rentals/ Family Reunions, YMCA Family Days,

How Regular Exercise Can Help with Diabetes Regular exercise could be a natural and effective way to help treat diabetes. A study conducted with diabetic Hispanic men and women undergoing a strength training routine found that within 16 weeks there was dramatic improvement with their sugar control. With its positive impact on blood sugar, weight, and blood pressure, exercise is an activity that should be included in any routine. Besides its beneficial properties regarding blood sugar, weight loss, and blood pressure, diabetics who exercise regularly have been found less likely to experience a heart attack or stroke than those who do not. This exercise is not specific to strength training or anaerobic exercise. Aerobic exercise, such as walking or jogging, is similarly effective. Both of these exercises, whether combined or isolated, have been found to aid in the fight against diabetes. How much exercise is too much? Overexercising could cause your blood sugar to rise. Obviously, this is not something that is desirable for a diabetic. Be sure to start your exercise program very slowly in order for your body to adapt to the new regiment that it is going through.

Warming up is very important as well. Always warm up before you start training in order to prevent too much stress on your body. Doing 10-15 very light repetitions of any exercise will increase blood flow, and eventually get your body ready for the exercise that you are about to perform. This is an important step that many often overlook.

Start your exercise routine out by going on brisk walks or lifting weights. Always make sure to consult your physician. The length of the exercise is also important—most experts agree that roughly 45 minutes of exercise is enough. This prevents over-exercising, and therefore prevents the negative effects on your blood sugar levels. While it is recommended that you exercise for no more than 45 minutes, exercising for a shorter period of time is acceptable.

When should you not exercise? If your blood sugar is above 250 mg/dL and you are have tested positive for ketones then it is considered a bad idea to exercise. Exercise could do more harm to your body than good at these levels. If your blood sugar is above 300 mg/dL but you are not ketones positive, then it would be advisable to exercise carefully. While exercise is certainly a great method of natural improvement, you do not want to do it when your body cannot handle the stress. Exercising can help those suffering from diabetes improve their health. When following the guidelines and techniques outlined here, exercise can be a powerful tool against diabetes. Always be sure to also monitor your diet, ensuring it is full of living foods and super-foods. -by Anthony Gucciardi, www.NaturalNews.com

Making Memories that Last

Hello, my name is Vincent the Frog. I am a member of the wonderful team at the Albemarle Family YMCA. During these past few months, before the kids of Elizabeth City/Pasquotank Public Schools went on break for summer, a helper and I have been

visiting several elementary schools to meet with some very special kids! We have been instructing the kids that we have met in the elementary schools about water safety. There is so much to teach these children about being responsible around water like boating safety, pool safety and beaching safety. Our goal is to make children of all ages aware of the safety steps involved with being in and around water. Being a frog makes me a great source of information for the kids seeing as how I spend so much time in the water! We showed the kids pictures of a pool, a beach and a lake. They discovered safe ways to enjoy these places through discovery questions. Near the end of our time together the children get to ask questions about what

Active Older Adults America is on the threshold of a new age: the age of the young, active older adult. This group is one of the fastest growing segments of the population. The Albemarle Family YMCA wants to provide more services to our growing population. Many active older adults age 55 and older are trying various new adventures. Our own Nick Nicholson rides his motorcycle to the Y to teach boot camp and cycling. We currently offer several Group Exercise classes such as Aqua Aerobics and Stretch,

Special Thank You to the Wachovia Wells Fargo Foundation The mission of the Wachovia Wells Fargo Foundation is to build strong and vibrant communities, improve the quality of life and make a positive difference. That is why they are one of Albemarle Family YMCA’s community partners; we are on similar missions.

6

they’ve learned, and how they can be safe when enjoying the water. We have made so many great new friends that some have even come to take Swim Lessons here at our Albemarle Family YMCA. It makes me so happy to think of all the kids learning and practicing safety in the pool or out at the beach. Your Friend, Vincent the Frog If you’d like to know about more about the adventures of Vincent please give Christina Weiss a call at (252) 334-9622 or email at cweiss@ymcashr.org.

The Albemarle Family YMCA wants to offer more for this growing group of YMCA members. We are surveying our active older adults to provide a more complete program. Through the survey process we hope to find several adults to form an advisory committee that can help plan activities that motivate and challenge our older adult population. Please stop by Member Services to pick up your survey. Bend and Move. We also have an active card group that meets every day in our upstairs lobby to play cards, share snacks and coffee as well sharing stories.

Thanks to a grant, the Wachovia Wells Fargo Foundation has invested in the community through our All Kids Swim program. All Kids Swim is a program that allows the kindergarten children in the Elizabeth City Pasquotank County school system to have a free set of eight Swim Lessons. Drowning is the secondleading cause of injury-related death

among children under the age of 15, and through Wachovia’s support, we are able to continue this program. Thank you Wachovia for changing lives. If your business would like to be a community partner with the Albemarle Family YMCA please contact Dean Mattix at dmattix@ymcashr.org or (252) 334-9622.

BLOCKER NORFOLK FAMILY YMCA 312 W. Bute Street, Norfolk • (757) 622-9622

Monday–Thursday 5 am–10 pm • Friday 5 am–9 pm • Saturday/Sunday 7 am–7 pm

What’s in a Name?

A Conversation with S. Frank Blocker, Jr. Q: What is it about the YMCA that has held your interest for so long? A: That’s easy. Friends. Many of my friends have been at the Y. Also, the handball.

Frank Blocker has been a YMCA member nearly all his life. As a young man, he was an avid handball player at the Norfolk YMCA. In 1977 and 1978, he served as Chairman of the Norfolk YMCA. Mr. Blocker has been generous not only with his time, but with his financial resources. In 1993, his first major gift to the Norfolk YMCA helped to build the pool and laid the foundation for the remarkable transformation of this facility from one primarily for businessmen to a thriving center for for children and families of all ages.

After-School Youth Fitness Classes (onsite & offsite) It’s now even easier to get your kids involved in an extracurricular activity or learn to swim without added stress! We are now offering youth classes & fitness for kids during After-School hours! • Hap ki do for Kids • Swim Lessons • Youth Fit Level I

Q: What motivated you to make the gifts to the YMCA that you have made? A: When it came to dollars for the Norfolk pool so many years ago, it was to honor my father. The Y was a special place to him and he had many friends there. The dollars for the pool also transformed the Norfolk Y into a modern Y and that was very important at the time. I’ve never been a big swimmer—I always preferred to sail—but I do appreciate the value of a pool in terms of recreation and keeping kids safe in the water. The Norfolk Y was something I just wanted to do for kids and families. No matter how much money you have, everyone has a responsibility to help others. I wish I had a nickel every time I’ve heard that but it is true. Q: What are your wishes for the future of the S. Frank Blocker, Jr. Family YMCA? A: I’ve seen lots of changes in downtown Norfolk over the years. There is a renaissance happening downtown bringing more children and families. The A nonsport specific program for ages 7–11 years geared toward matching physical skills sets specific to this age group concentrating on 12 core principles: Balance • Functional Strength Training Flexibility • Agility • Jumping • Speed development • Attitude • Core strength Cardio-endurance • Plyometrics • Nutrition Hand/Eye Coordination Participants will be assessed individually throughout the program on four components:

YMCA needs renovations to be part of that and to be even more significant than they already are. Every generation of kids has their own challenges—we had the depression and the war—but there seems to be so many things that can steer a kid wrong nowadays. Most kids don’t go outside and instantly have a bunch of other kids to play with. Youth obesity wasn’t a problem when I was younger. We could play until dinner and mother never worried about us. If any group can make today’s children and future generations healthy, and roll with the punches, it is the YMCA. Q: What advice would you give to today’s children? A: Kids just need to work hard, stay out of trouble, respect their parents, and get involved in activities like those at the Y. Those things should be high on every list. Help our Teen, Swim Lesson and Child Care programs mentioned by Mr. Blocker reach their full potential by giving today. If you would like to learn more, please contact Nancy Diel at (757) 962-5523 or ndiel@ymcashr.org.

Push-ups, pull-ups, core-strength and cardio-endurance. Youth will achieve the 12 core principals through a series of structured games and team activities. Emphasis will be placed on having fun, while achieving increased muscular strength and endurance, increased flexibility through basic Yoga moves and cardio-endurance. For more information please contact Jamie Childress at (757) 622-9622 or jchildress@ ymcashr.org.

We Build People Goal At 92% of our 2010 Annual Giving Campaign, the Blocker Norfolk Family YMCA is only $13,195

away from our $152,000 goal of bringing 400 free swim lessons to local children, summer adventure camp to kids and Teen programs to our future leaders. We would like to thank you from the bottom of our hearts for every gift you have given to make the lives of children safer and more

enriched. Help our programs reach their full potential by giving today. If you would like to learn more, please contact Nancy Diel at (757) 962-5523 or ndiel@ymcashr.org.

Bodybuilding Federation (USBF). They test all competitors for steroids and all other performance enhancing substances. He ended up winning the contest and qualifying for professional contests. Last year he entered a contest in Wilmington, Delaware along with his father and younger brother!

At 28 years old, Matt has been weightlifting for almost half his life. He started powerlifting in high school and won the Pennsylvania AAU Games for 3 straight years. At 22 years old he set a world record for bench press in his weight class; he weighed 148 pounds and bench-pressed 345 pounds! After that he decided to try bodybuilding, which requires a much more dedicated workout routine and diet plan. He competed in his first bodybuilding contest at the Bloomsburg Open, which was run through the United States

He owes his dedication to weight training to the YMCA and his family, who have taught and encouraged him every step of the way. He has been training at the Eastern Shore Family YMCA for the past 5 years, which has been the positive environment he finds essential for anyone trying to get or stay healthy.

Mr. Brother’s Story

With changes to my diet and help from the health and wellness director, Jill, and other cycling instructors and staff, I am now down to 220 pounds and still dropping the weight. I have also been off all meds for the past six months! To everyone at the Effingham Street Family YMCA, I am truly thankful for all that you’ve helped me achieve!

Hello, my name is Kirk Brothers and I am a member of the Effingham Street Family YMCA. In December of 2008, I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. With information and support from my nurse and diabetic support group, I learned that diet and exercise would help control my diabetes. In February 2009 when I joined the Effingham Street Family YMCA, I weighed 300 pounds. I started out working out in the Health & Wellness center and got registered with FitQuest, and later added Group Cycling to my workout routine.

For more information about Y-Change, please contact Health and Wellness Director, Jill Mills at (757) 399-5511 or jmills@ymcashr.org.

Strategies for Success—Use These Ideas to Meet Your Goals Start Small You can’t lose 20 pounds in a week. But you can lose one. Creating small achievable goals is important in the beginning. Get It On Paper Whether setting your first goals, tracking daily progress, or sharing your deepest thoughts with a journal, writing things down crystallizes your ideas, exposes underlying fears and keeps you on track. Focus On Everyday Habits The building blocks of a healthy lifestyle are forged in the smallest of actions you take every day. Healthy choices can become as natural as brushing your teeth or locking the front door. Build one habit, one action at a time.

Always See Your Goal Goals need attention. They need to be seen, heard and thought of often. So surround yourself with reminders. Be Consistent Imagine a plane taking off. In the beginning, a lot of energy is spent to simply get moving down the runway. But as speed and momentum take over, the plane is pulled forward and up into the sky, faster and further by the second. Consistent action, no matter how small, has more power than you often realize. Never Stop Learning A healthy lifestyle is a process—a journey more than a destination. You can always learn more about nutrition, fitness, and even yourself that can help you be just a little bit better tomorrow.

Come Out of Seclusion Everyone needs the help of others; support, information, encouragement, advice, and a well-timed pep talk are all invaluable as you set off on your adventure. Allow For Setbacks Accept the fact right now that you will make mistakes, and understand that it can be a positive thing. Have Fun! Who says getting healthy has to be a chore, a burden to be endured or suffered through? This can be an exciting adventure of self-discovery and help build a meaningful life—enjoy the ride! *Article taken, in part, from www.sparkpeople.com

10

the run, making exercise, eating healthy and quality family time difficult to come by. As part of the Activate America initiative, the YMCA wants to help make life a little simpler for today’s busy families. One of the keys to making a family fitness program successful is to make sure there is variety. You don’t have to sign your kids up for boot camp to fulfill your parental duty. A better approach would be to think of a variety of fitness activities that your family can participate in together on a regular basis. Don’t know where to start? New at the Great Bridge/Hickory Family YMCA this September is the Strong Families program. When your family signs up to participate in

this free member program, you will meet once a week to learn how to work together to create a stronger family bond and have fun at the same time. The Strong Families program will teach you how to maximize quality family time during the week and will introduce families to activities such as cooking together, family outings, teamwork activities and fun physical activities. In all that we plan and do, the Great Bridge/Hickory Family YMCA works to build strong kids, strong families, and strong communities. Outstanding Outreach Program Serves Local Youth In the fall of 2008, the Greenbrier Family YMCA felt that Chesapeake needed an outreach program and kids in our community needed the opportunity to be able to experience all that we have to offer at the YMCA. In January 2009 we kicked off our outreach program, which serves several lower income communities of Chesapeake, providing health and wellness opportunities for youth. Over the past two years, this program has gone from serving 16 kids to being able to reach out to over 90 for this year’s summer camp. When we started, we had 16 kids coming weekly to our Tutor and Fit program, Friday night kickball, and every other Saturday coming to the Y for some swimming and fun. During the year these kids had a safe place to have fun, learn new things

such as healthy eating habits, teamwork, respect, honesty, the importance of nutrition, and how to make the right choices. That summer we had our first outreach summer camp, which had 20 participants, for two weeks to experience the Y and all that is has to offer without any cost to them. Thanks to the funds raised through We Build People, these kids learned life lessons at the pool, went on a 1.5 mile walk on a trail at Northwest River park trail, took a trip to the Sports Hall of Fame museum, and spent the day at the beach. The kids had an awesome summer, and the counselors had a summer they would never forget. Outreach continues to flourish with 90 kids participating in High Hopes Summer Fun at the Cuffee Center.

Greenbrier Family YMCA is making a huge impact within the community and we find it an honor to be a part of something truly extraordinary. The YMCA is about making a difference in our communities. We are making that difference and truly helping to change lives for the better.

release these challenging energies. In the school age after-school program we focus on a program that is called SPARK, or also known as Sports, Play and Active Recreation for Kids. The goal is simple: to get children moving.

Put a SPARK in After-School

Children usually want to eat, sleep, or run after school. After all they are children and their bodies are constantly changing. All people regardless of age are constantly challenged by mental, physical, and emotional stress. While these are pretty normal and help us develop and cope later into adulthood, we still need to engage our children into an outlet to Other Greenbrier North winners included: • Kelly Sawyer & Doug Gilman: Men/Women Doubles • CL Murphy: Men’s All Age A Group • Jeff Wagner: Men’s All Ages Open Group • Jon Harpman & Rob Watson: Men’s Doubles Elite/A Group • Kelani Bailey: Men’s Singles • Pam McGrath & Kelly Sawyer: Mixed Doubles BC • Pam McGrath: Women’s Singles B/C.

Racquetball 34th Annual Military Classic Racquetball Tournament

The 34th Annual Military Classic was a great tournament for all involved. Racquetball is a sport that has a very strong social aspect to it and we try to provide a venue that makes it an important part of the event. The competition was tough, as evidenced by the number of tiebreakers, and we had great hospitality all weekend. Sunday saw some great matches with Austin Babb bringing his game to beat our own Jeff Wagner in the Men’s Open final in 2 games. Chris Eggleston and Kelani Bailey won the Mixed Open/Elite Doubles.

The games are broken up by several categories including age, intensity, and group size. We have found that some children do not wish to participate at first because of their gender, physical activity level, or because fear of the unknown game, but once they see how much fun their peers are having, they can’t wait for the next round to start! We have noticed that many children that once seemed uninterested in physical activities are now running around and laughing with friends, and the best part is they don’t even realize that they are exercising because it is so much fun! Let’s Go Together (A Member Story) classes and fantastic instructors the YMCA offers,” relates Nancy. “PowerCut, the Cycling class followed by Y Pilates, Kickboxing on Wednesday, and last but not least my favorite class on Fridays, Zumba.” George’s favorite class is PowerCut followed by Kickboxing, Cycling, Y Pilates and Zumba.

George Bendeck and Nancy Hudson frequently team up to tackle their workouts together. They both joined the YMCA in April. Nancy has a sister who was diagnosed with cancer. “My sister motivated me (to workout), after she was diagnosed with cancer she never gave up and kept working out and riding her bike, surfing and snowboarding. I thought to myself if she can live through her chemotherapy and be healthy, I could be healthier at this point in my life.” George was told he was at high risk of diabetes and high blood pressure and started his healthy lifestyle then. Nancy and George work out 5-6 days a week. “I take advantage of the wonderful

Since dedicating herself to a healthy lifestyle, Nancy’s biggest accomplishment is walking into the gym everyday and staying motivated. She feels she is taking steps in a positive direction for healthy and happier living. In addition, she has more energy, is getting better sleep and she revels in that great feeling at the end of the week that she stuck with it and successfully finished out one more week. Each week warrants a celebration of success and she shares this excitement with those around her including George. George himself has accomplished so much and has much cause for merriment. He started taking care of himself. George got off the couch and lost 30 pounds. He states that life in general has improved; he has much more energy and always has a better mood. He is frequently seen sweating and smiling at the Y. The season runs from September 9– October 30. Please call (757) 422-3805 for more information.

Fall Adult Flag Football League

But all of this is not without effort. “It is hard to keep on track,” George tells us, “but having a workout buddy and everyone that supports me” makes it possible. Keeping track of the weight lost every week motivates George even more and is a great measuring tool. “Staying on track with anything is always difficult; I take it one day at a time. I think about what I want to get accomplished that day and make sure I add going to the gym to that list.” explains Nancy. They will both continue their healthy lifestyles because they love the results too much. Nancy’s favorite thing at the YMCA is the group classes they offer and the wonderful Instructors. “It’s much more fun suffering along with a group of individuals.” They love that they can have fun and break a sweat. Their classmates and instructors keep them moving. Contact the Member Services desk for more information about our Group Exercise classes, at (757) 422-3805.

in such a positive way. I lost 8 pounds and some inches during the six weeks. I’m a more confident, happy person.

“I joined the Y-Change program to continue my weight loss and to learn how to eat healthier and to live a healthier lifestyle. Also, I wanted to get an exercise routine that could help me reach my goals. Joining the Y-Change program was the best decision that I could have made; it impacted my life

Tuesday and Thursdays 6–7 am Free (Members only program).

Listening to everyone, I found that we were all there for the same reasons and that was to live a healthier lifestyle and get stronger. I had never been in such a positive setting of people. Jason, our Y-Change coach, listened to our individual situations. I have limitations because of my size and health and I couldn’t do all the exercises. Jason would give me something that I could do and that kept me moving with the class. I really appreciated that he made sure that I didn’t feel left out. He is such a caring person. Keeping the food journals keep me accountable for what I ate or didn’t eat

correctly. I had an issue with eating breakfast and Jason helped me realize how important breakfast was. So now I am more aware of the things I eat, and the portion sizes I eat. I know how to shop for the right foods and how to read the labels correctly. There is so much to learn about nutrition and I have just begun. My goal is to continue with the Y-Change program and with the support of Jason and the rest of the group. My hope is to lose more weight and be able to motivate someone else and show them that this program is beneficial and IT WORKS if you put forth the effort!” Valarie Spruill

Boot Camp

“Coaching for the Suffolk Family YMCA I would just like to say how proud, of all the young athletes, I am. The more opportunities these children have had to swim, the more their event times have dropped. One great example of this would be the swimmer who, at the beginning of training was able to complete 50 meters of freestyle in just over 1 minute, has improved his or her time by close to 20 seconds!” With the swimmers training as hard as they do, they all can look forward to consistently improving their personal best times. Boot Camp is a new Group Exercise class that is creating the same great excitement that our Zumba class created earlier this year – except you don’t have to dance! It isn’t meant to intimidate and it is not just for the advanced exerciser. Boot Camp is for everyone. In our Boot Camp classes you work out your entire body using a variety of cardio and strength training techniques through calisthenics type exercises. YMCA’s Whitt Brothers Set Wrestling Records Blocker Norfolk Family YMCA members Bryan and Taylor Whitt were introduced to the sport of wrestling through a local YMCA youth program when they were both in elementary school. Over the years, they continued to train at the Blocker Norfolk Family YMCA and began winning numerous local wrestling tournaments. After both won multiple state middle school championships, they embarked upon very successful high school careers. They have now won seven high school state wrestling championships between them. Their father Burt Whitt has been a member of the YMCA of South Hampton Roads since 1978 and currently serves on the Board of Directors and has so for 15 years. “The YMCA makes a considerable effort at providing a variety of programs for families with children of all ages, so that each person can find healthy activities that they enjoy. I’m just thankful my own children have been able to benefit from a number of Y youth programs.” says Burt. Bryan, who just graduated from Cox High School, became the first Virginia wrestler to win 5 state titles this year while Taylor, a rising senior at Norfolk Academy, won his 2nd state championship. This is as many as any brother duo in Virginia has ever won and Taylor has a chance to win another one next year.

Bryan, who also set the all-time record for wins in Virginia with 237, was recently selected by the Norfolk Sports Club as the top high school wrestler in the area and was selected by Wrestling USA Magazine as one of three All-Americans from Virginia. The YMCA instructor who introduced him and his brother to wrestling, Coach Joe Baranik, traveled back to Virginia from North Carolina to see him receive the prestigious Norfolk Sports Club award.

Bryan has signed to wrestle next year at the University of Virginia. Both boys acknowledge that getting their start in wrestling and training at the Y has led to huge benefits, including a healthy lifestyle. For more information about family programming, dial (757) 962-5555 to connect to the YMCA nearest you. Visit www.ymcashr.org for more information about the YMCA of South Hampton Roads.

YMCA Leaders’ Club

Designed to empower youth and teens with skills and values instrumental to success, the YMCA Leaders’ Club instills young people with all the confidence and vigor to succeed in life. Jake Pittman, 18, of Franklin, Virginia has achieved much success through his involvement in the YMCAs Leaders’ Club. This June, Pittman was one of eight selected, based on his mentoring skills and ability to inspire others, to attend

22

the Blue Ridge Leaders School (BLRS) at Black Mountain, North Carolina. To be eligible for this retreat, teens are required to do at least 100 volunteer hours in the YMCA or in the community.

Day. The most rewarding volunteer opportunity has been coaching 2nd–4th grade soccer teams at the James L. Camp, Jr. Family YMCA the last two years, along with friend Wade Martin.

The BRLS is an annual event where several hundred teenage boys and girls gather to learn how to inspire and teach the youth skills for the future.

Pittman is only one example of a number of youth participating in this voluntary activity. At present there are 38 active teens at the James L. Camp, Jr. Family YMCA, helping to create a positive, safe environment for youth and teens. Each teen program is focused on developing the spirit, mind and body while stimulating creativity, offering challenges and of course, having fun!

Pittman has been involved with the YMCA all of his life, attending YMCA Summer Camp for most of his childhood and has been involved with the Leaders’ Club since he was 12 years old. Throughout his time at the YMCA he has found value in volunteering, in many areas, such as a referee for children’s soccer leagues, enrichment camps over the summer, and YMCA Healthy Kids

For more information about the Leaders’ Club please contact Lynn Skeele-Flynn at (757) 962-5504 or lskeele-flynn@ ymcashr.org.

Healthy Eating on the Run When you are crunched for time or have no energy to cut, dice, and slice a healthy dinner, healthy eating on the run seems impossible. Healthy eating on the go can be easy if you just take one day a month to plan menus, go grocery shopping and stock your kitchen with choices that will be quick for mealtime but also nutritious. Eating healthy has four basic components: Think Brown, Cut the Fat, Colorful Plates and Fist-Sized Portions. 1. Think Brown Stock your house with whole-grain carbohydrates (brown rice, whole grain cereal, sweet potatoes) instead of food that is white in color (i.e. white rice, white bread, potatoes). Benefits: You will feel fuller due to the increased fiber content. These foods also will help with cholesterol levels in your body and keep your heart healthier. 2. Cut the Fat Limit red meat consumption to one time per week and take the skin off all poultry. Do not bring sweets and chips into the house; if you must have something sweet or salty; eat it outside of the home where your portion size can be controlled. Switch dairy products to fatfree or 1% fat only. 3. Colorful Plates If you do not see a least 3 different colors on your plate at mealtime then you are definitely not getting the fruits and vegetables you need every day! Chicken, mashed potatoes, and corn make a dull colored plate…brighten it up! 4. Fist-size Portions In the meat and carbohydrate department you should only eat one fist full of anything containing flour or sugar and one palm-sized portion of meat, poultry or seafood per meal. The rest of your plate should be filled with the “colorful plate” items. Now that you have the four basic guidelines under your belt, you are ready to stock your kitchen.

In the pantry always have: Low sodium chicken broth, dried fruit, nuts, brown rice, whole wheat pasta, low-fat spaghetti sauce, fat-free refried beans and chunk light tuna or salmon. For the freezer: Stock your freezer with different kinds of frozen vegetables (without sauce). Also buy frozen skinless chicken breasts, frozen salmon, turkey burgers and frozen shrimp. For the refrigerator: Mini whole wheat bagels, low-fat flavored or whole wheat tortillas and eggs (great for a quick omelet wrap on the run), fresh fruit and veggies, fat-free dairy products and a variety of low-fat, low-sugar condiments (BBQ sauce, salsa, and teriyaki) that can be poured over any frozen chicken breast for an instant dinner.

Choose sides of fruits and vegetables instead of fries or chips. Healthy eating does not need to be labor intensive or expensive if you just plan ahead and follow the four basic guidelines: think brown, colorful plate, low-fat and fist-sized portions. Eat easy, eat smart, and eat for your heart! Shaye Arluk, MS, RD, HFI is a registered dietitian who is contracted by McDonald’s Corporation to promote their balanced active lifestyle campaign. She will be providing free lectures at area YMCA’s monthly on healthy snacking and the truth behind the 100 calorie snack pack. Please check the YMCA’s web site for more details.

Now that you have all the ingredients available, take one day a month to plan out 10-15 healthy meals that you can make in advance and are freezer stable or are quick to prepare. Magazines like “Cooking Light” and cookbooks like The Six O’Clock Scramble by Aviva Goldfarb are a great source for healthy recipes. Eating out can be a healthy alternative but you have to choose very wisely and follow the four healthy eating rules closely. In quick service restaurants choose salads with grilled chicken or grilled chicken sandwiches without a mayonnaise based topping. McDonald’s Premium Grilled Chicken Sandwich is served on a whole grain bun so you can also “think brown” with this option.
