A BRAND NEW DAY You may have noticed that the Y is changing the way we present ourselves. For the first time in 43 years, we have unveiled a new brand. The new strategy is designed to increase understanding of the impact we are making in the community, so that more people can take advantage of our unique capacity to foster lasting personal and social change. Our community has needs, and the Y remains a central means to meeting them. As a cause-driven organization, the Y relies on donated time and money. We’ve always known that positive change only comes about when we invest in our kids, our health and our neighbors. And that’s why we’re here. We have three areas of focus:

Youth Development

Social Responsibility

because young people need caring adults to provide support, guidance and encouragement as they grow.

because we truly are in this together, and together we can harness our individual strengths to bring about positive change around us.

Healthy Living because wellness in spirit, mind and body strengthens our very being, and enhances our interactions with others.

So while we’ve changed our appearance to better reflect the work we do and the positive impact we make, we’re still supporting South Hampton Roads, the Eastern Shore, Franklin and Northeastern North Carolina in the same way we always have. We are simply reintroducing ourselves to you! Refer to page 7 to see all the great ways we continue to support you and your family.

MORE THAN A GAME

At the Y, you can find the answers, support and quality programming you need to help you be successful in reaching your fitness goals.

A WORK IN PROGRESS

The First Tee of Hampton Roads, the YMCA of South Hampton Roads’ golf and life skills program, impacts the lives of young people through the game of golf. Youth learn more than golf skills; they learn about character development and life-enhancing values. Certification classes, summer camps, tournaments, family time, open play and driving range use are just a few activities offered. The First Tee operates a golf course in Virginia Beach and on the Eastern Shore of Virginia, and offers services that can be brought into various communities through affiliate courses and the Mobile Learning Center. YMCA of South Hampton Roads members pay only $15/month for use of the course at The First Tee of Hampton Roads. For your convenience, this monthly payment can be added to your automatic bank draft. Visit us at 2400 Tournament Drive in Virginia Beach, next to Virginia Beach National Golf Club. For more information, go to TheFirstTeeHR.org or call 757 563 8990.

When writing my success story I thought to myself, “I am not a success, but a work in progress.” I have always had a problem with my weight. I would not describe myself as inactive, as I am always involved in some activity, but I am not good at sports (and I’m certainly not athletic). I would, however describe myself as lazy. I am one of those people who is perfectly content to spend the day in front of the TV with my laptop. All of my life I have been on some diet or program. I have tried them all! In 2003 I had gastric bypass surgery. I lost 112 pounds in less than a year! I kept the weight off for over 3 years, and then due to some changes in medication, I gained 20 pounds very quickly. I was devastated, but finally got used to it and again maintained this weight for another few years. Then due to yet another new medication, I gained 20 more pounds. I was miserable! Some of my coworkers had been going to the Y and talked about how much they liked it and how convenient it was for them. In September of 2009, the Y was running a promotion, so I went to take a

look. I signed up that day, but it took me two weeks to go to my first class. Sure, the Y has great equipment, but I am not a person who enjoys that kind of exercise, so I figured I would try a few classes hoping that one of the instructors would motivate me. I started with a 30-minute lunchtime class. I found not only did I like the instructor, but I enjoyed the workout. So a few days later, I tried another class. This class had a different instructor, and surprisingly I liked her too and the class was fun! The 30-minute classes were my saving grace. They were short enough that I could maintain my hard work and not get bored or too tired. So for several months I went to three 30-minutes classes a week. I was slowly but surely losing some weight but more importantly making my body stronger. Working out was becoming a habit. Then I heard about the Pilates class. I had never taken Pilates, so I thought I would try it. I loved it! I added two Pilates classes to my weekly routine, taking me to the Y five times a week!

No joining fee January 1–17

Eight months after joining the Y, I have lost 17 pounds and am feeling great! So when one of my friends and I decided to train to walk in the Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon, I suppose it was a natural progression. Having said all of that, I want you to know that none of this is easy for me. I have to force myself to get to the Y and to get up early to walk. It is hard and I don’t often know where I find the motivation. In fact, some days, I don’t. So I may take a day or two off, but I come back to the Y, and that is the important part. I keep trying. For me, it is important to have goals, reasonable ones. It started out that I wanted to lose 40 pounds, which is a lot of weight. So I made the goals smaller. I told myself that I would be happy if I lost 10 pounds, even happier if I lost 20, etc. I also try to reward myself for hitting those smaller goals. In addition to the weight loss, now I am training to walk 13 miles! I have not yet accomplished that goal, but I’m on track and know I will do that successfully too. And even if I don’t, I sure tried my best! Tina Ritz, Y Member
