YMCA YMCA of South Hampton Roads • Vol. 4 Ed. 2 Spring/Summer 2010
Here comes
Summer!
Mission: To put Judeo-Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all.
Letter from the President Greetings, Welcome to Inside Your YMCA, your source for information about what’s new at your YMCA. This member magazine is ready to help you make the most of your membership. With the long, and especially cold, winter behind us I’m sure most of you share my excitement at the coming of summer! This summer is looking to be a fantastic one for the YMCA of South Hampton Roads—we will be offering more aquatic programs, camps, and fun events than ever before, at all our family centers! We will also continue to celebrate our 125-year anniversary throughout the year at camp and in all our other program areas. While the first few pages highlight what’s new for the summer, how to make the most of your membership and a brief summary of our history, the following pages highlight upcoming programs and member success stories, organized by family center. Discover the fun activities that await you and your family by checking out the event calendar in the center, pull-out section, organized alphabetically by city. Perhaps the most exciting news this season is the new renovation and expansion of several of our aquatics facilities at existing locations. The Indian River Family YMCA’s pool area has been completely renovated, while our second oldest location, the Mt. Trashmore Family YMCA, is celebrating a new outdoor Spray Park with a cookout on May 31. Finally, the Taylor Bend Family YMCA is the proud new owner of the biggest outdoor water slide at any of our family centers.
2
As always we encourage all of our members to participate in activities they enjoy at any of our 16 family center locations. While we look forward to all of these fun outdoor pool activities, safety must always be stressed. If you haven’t already picked one up, the Summer Aquatic Guide is out and should be available in all family centers (and it also available online). It provides you with an comprehensive list of all the swimming lessons, family fun, lifeguard certification classes and all other aquatic activities we are offering this summer. Lastly, the YMCA of South Hampton Roads is proud to announce the sponsorship of McDonalds, a proponent of educating and encouraging healthy eating habits to our children. Enjoy this edition and discover the many ways you and your loved ones will enjoy being a part of our YMCA family! If you would like to share your story to inspire others or see an article about a particular YMCA program in Inside Your YMCA, contact the Membership Director at your YMCA. We appreciate your feedback. In good health, Chuck Harris President / CEO YMCA of South Hampton Roads

New for Summer 2010! You certainly don’t have to go on vacation to have a great summer when you are a member of the YMCA. Make the most of your summer by staying right here at home and enjoying all the new summer related activities at your YMCA without ever leaving town!
Indian River’s New Aquatic Center
The indoor pool area at the Indian River Family YMCA has been entirely rebuilt! This spring, families welcomed the complete transformation of the old pool into a brand new indoor aquatic center. The renovation created additional space for lap lanes, Swim Lessons, Group Exercise, chair lift and inwater pool seating. A new hot tub is also part of the new aquatic center, so come work out and relax with the new facility upgrades! The opening of the pool will be celebrated with a Grand Re-Opening/ Open House and Pool Party on May 15, from 11 am–1:30 pm. This event will be free and open to the public so bring your friends! There will be a cookout, face painting, pool games and more.
Taylor Bend Slide
Come try the giant new water slides at Taylor Bend! With two tubes that spiral and curve, you’re sure to make an unforgettable splash on the biggest YMCA water slides in South Hampton Roads. The pool is scheduled to open
May 22 so mark your calendars and don’t miss what is sure to be our biggest opening day yet!
Mt. Trashmore Spray Park
By the time you read this the Mt. Trashmore Spray Park should be well on it’s way to being completed (we have been documenting the progress at www.ymcashr.org). On May 31, bring the whole family out for the Spray Park Grand Opening and Memorial Day Pool party. A new spray park with pool toys, outdoor bath houses and expanded seating and vending area have all been added to the Mt. Trashmore outdoor aquatic center.
With tons of fun activities and events planned at each family center this summer, be sure to pick up an Aquatic Guide (or download online) so that you don’t miss a thing! With a complete listing of Swim Lessons, family fun and lifeguard certification trainings at all family centers, the Aquatic Guide is a great resource for summer planning. It’s also a good idea to keep up with all our current events through our social media outlets, Facebook and Twitter. You can find all our family centers pages linked from our home page, www.ymcashr.org.

Your Membership As a member of the YMCA of South Hampton Roads, you have made the commitment to live healthier, but you may not be aware of all the benefits of your membership. Here is a quick review of some of them to get you started... As a member you have a number of ways to help you achieve your fitness goals. From FitQuest, our personalized fitness plan, to Y-Change, a 6-week journey toward a healthier lifestyle, we are here to help!
Families
Between work, school and other obligations, it can be a challenge to incorporate family time into our routines. Your YMCA is the solution! YMCAs have always been a place for families, and now the YMCA is dedicating more time, space and programming to encourage families to spend time together in healthy activities.
The Interactive Zone is the perfect place for families to participate in healthy activities. Children can challenge their parents in a virtual race on the Expresso bikes while not even realizing they are working out! Youth also receive an exhilarating workout learning new steps on the Xerdance pads. Swimming is also a hallmark of the YMCA; with all the heat this summer, this is sure to be at the top of your list for outdoor activity. With 8 outdoor (and 12 indoor) pools, the YMCA offers a great opportunity for swimming.
While there are several other healthy activities for families to participate in like racquetball, rock climbing and basketball, there are also YMCA services that support families, especially those with younger children. ChildWatch, a complimentary babysitting service, is staffed with responsible and qualified individuals who ensure your child is being cared for while you workout. One night a month, children are invited to the YMCA’s Parents’ Night Out program, so they too can have a night of fun while mom and dad enjoy a night out without the children. Both services are benefits of family membership. To learn more about any and all of the benefits and services afforded to you as a member of the YMCA of South Hampton Roads please visit www.ymcashr.org or call (757) 962-5555 for more information.
YMCA Summer Camp
Happy 125th Birthday YMCA of South Hampton Roads On March 1, 1885, the Norfolk YMCA was founded with a facility on Church Street. Over the next 20 years, the YMCA flourished with activities such as bible study, football and basketball. The YMCA relocated twice over the following 50 years to accommodate additional areas including a pool and gymnasium, and later racquetball courts and fitness rooms. The next YMCA was established at Mt. Trashmore in 1976. The 80’s and
90’s were dedicated to broadening the YMCA’s mission and services, thus opening facilities throughout Suffolk, Portsmouth, Virginia Beach and Chesapeake. To meet the needs of the at-risk population, the YMCA developed the Community Services branch. The next few years the YMCA established two additional centers in Chesapeake and further extended it’s boundaries to include serving the needs of the Eastern
Norfolk YMCA Shore, Outer Banks, Elizabeth City and Franklin communities. This year, we celebrate the YMCA’s birthday with 16 family centers and countless satellite, program and child care centers, serving coastal Virginia and northeastern North Carolina.

Making Memories that Last As parents look for opportunities to keep their kids active this summer, our Summer Day Camp reminds caregivers that camp is among the best options for engaging kids in activities that will help develop their spirit, mind and body, while getting them outdoors in a safe environment. “Camping is synonymous with personal development. It provides kids with the opportunity to practice social and decision making skills through new experiences,” says Courtney Wilday, Program Director for the Albemarle Family YMCA. Kids come to camp to develop friendships, learn skills in a new environment, and make memories that will last a lifetime. The Albemarle Family YMCA provides exciting and educational summer camp
options for children ages 3–17 years of age. Below is a list of all the Summer Camps that the Albemarle Family YMCA provides. • Traditional Day Camp • Adventure Camps • Tween Camp • Teen Camp • Little Sports Camp According to the American Camp Association, fewer children are spending time having fun outdoors. Children have lost 12 hours of free time a week over the last 20 years.
Get your kids outdoors, having fun, and making friends at one of the camps around at the Albemarle Family YMCA!
The Courage To Change After a long life of abuse by my mother and my first husband I had completely lost control of my life. The only way I knew how to regain control was through eating or rather in my case not eating. I was struggling with anorexia. I was thin. I thought I looked great! At 5’7” tall I weighed an amazing 120 pounds. I was all skin and bones, passing Before out at work and home. Then things changed. I got a job at a bakery. Let me just tell you after 11 years of starving myself, that was the wrong place for me to work. Food…it was so good! The more I ate, the more I wanted. In 9 short years I went from 120 pounds to 246! I cried all the time. My family would say, “You’re perfect just the way you are.” Lies, all lies, I thought. In January of 2009 I received a flyer in the mail, “YMCA—No joining fee.” After deciding to join, I was told I should make a FitQuest appointment to become acquainted with the

Paula Ford is a Y-Change instructor, a Personal Trainer and a long list of other great things. I shared my past with her; she listened and never gave up on me. So how could I let someone like that down? I learned about nutrition, started eating better and the weight just started falling off. After I started a regular exercise routine, more weight fell off. I finished Y-Change in the 6 weeks having lost 16 pounds.
After equipment, so I did. Hard as I tried, my life was still a mess; my self-esteem shattered. Within 3 months I had lost 10 lbs., hurt my back and given up. Then I remembered in my FitQuest appointment that I was told about Y-Change. This is where the real journey begins. By now I was becoming a regular. I was at the Y every day. I started Y-Change April 21, 2009 at 246 pounds, back where I had started. That is where I met the woman who changed my life forever.
R
Then it happened. Paula went on vacation and I hit a plateau. I was devastated. Paula came back and said, “No biggie—we’ll just switch things up and try some free weights.” I did and started losing weight again. That wasn’t all that was happening, I was changing. All I needed was a family that cared and in 5 months I had lost 62 pounds. All of this was made possible by my local YMCA, the Albemarle Family YMCA. There has never been a more loving, caring environment for me. You have all changed my life in ways you may never understand and I love you all dearly for it! —Rebecca Leary For more information about Y-Change, please contact our Health & Wellness Director, Sarah Murray at (252) 334-9622 or smurray@ymcashr.org.

Eating Right on the Road Heading out of town for vacation this summer or just planning a day trip? Then you know how tricky it can be to stick with your eating plan. Just because you’re in a hotel or a restaurant doesn’t mean you can’t eat well. Follow these tips and you’ll be good to go! • Eat as you would at home. If your order arrives and it’s enough for three, stick to just one sensible portion. If you have a fridge in your hotel or are staying with friends, ask the waiter to box up the extras
before you start to eat so you won’t be tempted—and you can enjoy the leftovers as a guilt-free meal on another day. • Snack before you go. If you know you’ll be tempted by rich foods, have a snack before dinner. You’ll feel fuller and will be less likely to indulge once you arrive at the restaurant. • Know the lingo. Avoid menu items that are described as au gratin, crispy, fried, or creamy. Stick with choices that are baked, broiled, poached, or steamed instead. • Substitute. If a dish comes with fries, don’t hesitate to ask for it with a salad or a veggie instead. Likewise, if a meat or
veggie is prepared with lots of heavy oils, ask about lighter preparation options. Restaurants want to make you happy, so chances are they’ll be willing to help. • Share. If you’re dining with a friend, split an entree, an appetizer, or even a dessert! It’s a simple way to cut calories and not feel deprived. Don’t dread the pounds you envision you’ll gain on your next vacation or fall off the wagon on your next trip. By thinking ahead, you’ll be equipped to travel in healthy style! —Denise Austin, 2/17/2010

Not Just a Y Success Story 2006, with my husband, two girls, and stepson. After leaving a job at the Accomack County Public Schools, I took a position as a Correctional Officer with the Maryland Department of Corrections. Not long after completing the required training needed to become a Corrections Officer, I realized that I was out of shape and really needed to get my life back on the track. I started going to the YMCA with my family and then mostly by myself. I got interested in the Tactical Team at work, but I knew I had to get in shape, so I decided on a serious diet plan and started going to the gym every day. My name is Ms. Hall, and I’m 26 years old. I moved to the Eastern Shore in November

Within 4 months I was running up to 4 miles, had better stamina, and had lost almost 40 lbs. In May after continuing my diet plan,

I was able to complete PT (Physical Training), the requirement to make the TAC Team. I would not have been able to accomplish my physical fitness goals without the help of the YMCA and their helpful coaches, especially Quinton, Nevon and Louise. Bill’s Story
or that it was all just too hard. But I kept coming back and I started to enjoy my time here socially as well. I smile, laugh, joke and say hello to everyone, including the facility staff and other members.
Hello, I’m Bill Cawley and I have been a member of the Effingham Street Family YMCA since March of 2009. I was a 54-year-old man with a large frame who had been carrying an increasing amount of weight for his entire adult life. When I found out that my youngest daughter was getting married in September of 2010, I decided that I wanted to be a different person when I walked her down the aisle. I had started working out at home, with some success, in January 2009. In addition, I started a change to a healthier diet. I did well but realized that help would be required if I was going to become the person that I wanted to be.
Before
After
I weighed 296 lbs. when I walked in the door of the YMCA on March 18, 2009. I remember thinking how hard it was to get through 20 minutes of cardio when I first started working out. I thought it was so great to see that I had lifted 4,000 lbs. I remember being frustrated with results, thinking that I could be doing things other than coming to the YMCA,
Through the guidance and encouragement of Jill and the Health & Wellness Staff in the last year, my strength and endurance has been increased to a point that is higher than it has ever been in my entire life. I am sure that they can do the same for you. But you have to really want it and be dedicated to it. During that time frame I have lost 60 lbs. My goal is lose another 15 lbs. and continue to increase my strength. Thank you to the facility staff, and all of the other members of Effingham Street Family YMCA, who helped me in changing my life.
Healthy Eating: Breakfast Counts! Research has uncovered numerous benefits associated with the morning meal. Breakfast replenishes the fuel that your body uses up while you sleep—it is literally a break from an overnight fast. People who eat breakfast have a higherquality diet and are better able to control their weight than people who skip the
morning meal. In fact, 78% of the people listed in the National Weight Control Registry, a database of individuals who successfully lost at least 10% of their body weight and kept it off for at least one year, report eating breakfast every day.

GREAT BRIDGE/HICKORY FAMILY YMCA 633 S. Battlefield Boulevard, Chesapeake • (757) 546-9622 Monday–Friday 6 am–11 pm • Saturday 8 am–7 pm • Sunday 11 am–7 pm
If You Like Zumba... You Will Love Latin Splash! When it comes to group exercise classes, Zumba has been a huge success ever since it was introduced at the Great Bridge/Hickory Family YMCA. Classes have been added throughout the week and attendance steadily increases. Now you can add one more high-intensity, hip-swinging, bootie-shaking class to the schedule…only this one is in the pool! Latin Splash follows the same principles of a Zumba class—a cardiovascular workout that uses Latin-inspired dance moves set to international music—the element of water adds a new dimension to the class. Members who may be uncomfortable participating in a Zumba class because of joint or mobility concerns, will love Latin Splash. Those with arthritis concerns can kick their legs, pump their arms, wiggle their hips, run in place and roll their shoulders! Due to the supportive and forgiving qualities of the water, this is a low impact class. Put it all together to the beat
of music like salsa, meringue and hip-hop and before you know it you are burning calories and having fun! Latin Splash, as with many water exercise classes, is appropriate for all age and fitness levels. Participants move at their own pace and the resistance of the water makes it a great workout for anyone. Latin Splash is currently offered as part of our Water Exercise schedule on Wednesdays at 10 am. Watch for additional classes as the demand increases. Latin Splash instructor, Amber Parks, says, “This summer we plan to take the party to the Outdoor Pool. You can bet that once other
pool-goers hear the catchy Latin music, they will be quick to join in on the fun.” Many water aerobic participants have long known the joy of water exercise. If you’ve been thinking of giving it a try, this is a great class with which to start. To learn more about Latin Splash, visit our webpage at www.ymcashr.org, or contact Aquatics Director, Lisa Dionne at 546-9622.
Warming Up for Outdoor Summer Fun Afterwards enjoy some watermelon and beat the summer heat. On select Tuesdays, bring a t-shirt, hat, socks, or whatever tie-dye-able item you want, and we’ll supply the rubber bands and dye. After you’ve created your Tuesday Tie-Dye masterpiece, let it dry in the sun while you lounge at the pool.
This summer, there’s hardly a day when something special isn’t happening at the Outdoor Pool! We’ll kick off the summer with a Memorial Day pool party. Bring the whole family for music, food and fun. On weekdays throughout the summer months, experience a different activity depending upon the day of the week. Melon Mondays make Mondays fun. Join us on select Mondays from 1–4 pm for watermelon races during adult swim.
10
Those midweek hump days are designated as Wacky Wednesdays all summer long. Bring your favorite float from 4–6 pm. We will have additional lifeguards on duty to ensure safety. Express your creative side on Thursdays in July and August. Spend quality time with your child while creating fun and funky chalk art on the pool deck on Talented Thursdays. Friday Night Freeze on select Fridays will allow you to cool down from your week by relaxing at the pool. Refresh yourself with a swim and enjoy complimentary freeze pops.
R
In addition to the fun weekday activities, Swim Stroke Clinics will be held several mornings throughout the summer, during which members can be evaluated by one of our certified swim coaches. Suggestions on how to improve swim strokes will be offered to enhance the exercise. Select Fridays will be designated as Bring a Friend day, when a friend can visit free of charge to enjoy the YMCA experience. Independence Day and Labor Day pool parties complete with music, games and cook outs are also scheduled. Back again this summer will be Saturday Under the Stars, an adults-only night of music, entertainment, dancing and food on the pool deck, with child care provided by the YMCA. We hope to see you at many of these fun events this summer at the Outdoor Pool! Don’t forget to pick up an Aquatics Guide at the Member Services desk or view it online at www.ymcashr.org.

CYAT participates in swim meets monthly at area YMCAs. Additional swim meets and practices are available to those who choose to participate at the USA Swimming level. Practice times vary depending on age, but practices are available each day of the week to accommodate family schedules.
Start planning now for the upcoming season starting in September. Swimmers must be YMCA members, and there is an additional monthly fee of $50 per month. For USA Swimming, the additional fee is $65 per month. If your child is passionate about swimming and would enjoy being a part of a team environment, bring he or she to Greenbrier Family YMCA on Thursday evenings at 6:20 pm.
For those who prefer getting in the pool, several water aerobic classes are tailored to fit the needs of the active older adult. Aquatic AOA class helps to improve joint flexibility and muscle strength, using the water’s natural buoyancy and resistance. Starter Aqua Jog conditions the upper and lower body in the deep water, using a flotation belt.

Active Older Adults The Active Older Adults in the community want and need a place to find friendship and fitness. The Greenbrier Family YMCA has a program that fits those needs. Ages 55 and older can find classes each day to help strengthen, tone and burn calories for all fitness levels. Chair Exercise class includes exercises primarily performed in a chair using tubing and other equipment to improve strength, flexibility and balance. Stretch, Move and Bend helps the active older adult focus on increasing cardio, strength, balance and flexibility with low impact aerobics.
When the Active Older Adults aren’t working out, they are building friendships during organized luncheons, movies and field trips. Each month, the group gets together and visits local restaurants or
Whether it’s coffee time in the lobby or fitness classes, the Active Older Adults have friends for life. Active Older Adults day is May 26, an annual event, that gives all older adults in the community an opportunity to experience the YMCA for a day. For additional information regarding Active Older Adult classes and activities, please contact Lorrie Quakenbush at 547-9622 or lquakenbush@ymcashr.org.

Summer Camp 2010 is just around the corner. We will have more fun this summer than ever before! Our camp weeks will focus around the fun things in life that will make the children put on their detective hats, dig up ancient artifacts, and simply relax in the sunshine. The locations will be at Greenbrier Primary (1551 Eden Way) and Cedar Road Elementary (1605 Cedar Road). Open House will be June 15 at 6 pm at Chic-Fil-A on Battlefield Blvd. Our Summer Camp focuses on developing the YMCA core values in all children so they can learn more about caring, honesty, respect, responsibility and faith. Our availability is limited and filling up fast so don’t miss out on giving your child the summer of a lifetime!

The YMCA and ExploreHealth, A Blended Family In the early Fall of 2009 the “members” of ExploreHealth were notified that effective November 1, 2009 ExploreHealth would close its doors after over twenty years of service to the medical community. This announcement shocked the some 400 patient/members who depended on those facilities to continue their collective rehabilitative therapies as well as the professional staff who had dedicated their professional lives to those patients.
On November 1, 2009 we, the former ExploreHealth members, began our transition to the YMCA at the Hilltop and Mt. Trashmore locations, with most of the 200 or so of us electing to utilize the Hilltop facility. With great apprehension, we began the integration. We didn’t really know what to expect but, realizing that we had to continue a regimen of physical rehabilitation and fitness, we marched on.
they could to make us feel welcome. We were given tours, shown all of the state-of-the-art equipment, and tutored in the use and care of the facilities and all the amenities. The entire Hilltop YMCA staff continues to make us feel at home. Although there have been a few glitches, I truly believe that the transition has been a resounding success. The new operation is now known as Sentara Clinical Fitness Program.
Many of my ExploreHealth family had asked me if I was going to make the transition to the “Y” and I told them that I would give it two months, November and December. I knew that nothing was going to suit me in November because I am a grumpy old man. But after the initial two weeks I became a believer!
I am very thankful for the love and support that we have been shown at the Hilltop Family YMCA and will be forever grateful for the combined professional staff and their collective dedication to excellence. Please contact Membership Director, Tina Jenkins at 422-3805 for more information on our Sentara Clinical Fitness Program
At the Hilltop Family YMCA, we were met by an enthusiastic staff of dedicated and energetic professionals who did everything

Since the late 1930’s millions of children, parents, grandparents, amateur athletes and professional athletes like Jerry Rice and Emmitt Smith have all had tons of great times playing and learning the game of Tail Football as it was first called, but more know today as Flag Football. Starting on May 1, the Hilltop Family YMCA will add to that total! Flag Football leagues started on the military bases in the late 1940’s as a recreational pastime to help the troops stay in shape and relax in the midst of hard and stressful times. Since then you can find a game of flag football anywhere, including the Hilltop Family YMCA. Football is the most popular sport in the United States. Some say it the new

Young Member Recognized for Outstanding Character Haley Butler, who attends the KidZone After-School program, was awarded the Roberts Ring of Faith Award for outstanding character and core values displayed during January and February. Haley has shown tremendous resiliency, adaptability, and growth since she first came to the YMCA in November of 2008. At that time, she had just suffered a tragedy in her life and was beginning to come to terms with the permanent change it would mean. Being new to the program, she had to follow the new schedule, observe a new set of rules, make new friends, and listen to new counselors. This was not easy for Haley at times, and she struggled with having to adjust to more changes than she had already endured. Our counselors took Haley under their wings and gave her opportunities to shine.
Haley began to show signs of growth, some of which were: positive interactions with her peers, a willingness to try new activities, cleaning up after herself, following the rules, observing the schedule, and speaking respectfully to peers and counselors. Please bring a lawn chair if you would like more comfortable seating.

Through determination and hard work, she blossomed into a shining example how the YMCA can help change lives. She began connecting with other KidZoners, her counselors and other staff, and inspired everyone who observed her courage. She dreams of becoming an actress one day, a profession that will make good use of her love for music and dance. Potlucks and Seminars Keep Us Coming Back Each month, a group of us enjoy a spread of goodies while learning about different topics that affect our older members. George Chandler from the Commonwealth Attorney’s Office has been educating our older adults through a program called CASE, which

stands for Communities Against Senior Exploitation. Topics include Identity Theft, Current Scams, What to know before hiring a Contractor and Telemarketing Abuse. George sends us monthly fraud alerts that we post and hand out at the seminars. We also had the privilege of having Master Police Officer, Dolly Deans from Virginia Beach instruct us on home safety and helpful tips when we are out in public places. Our last seminar with George was on Home Improvement Fraud. George has helped many of our members that have already experienced scams and home improvement fraud.

Learning to Swim Meet the “Y-Kids”: Elijah 6, Jacob 5, Markee 5, and James 6. Eli began as a natural born swimmer. While he clearly loved the water, he needed to learn caution. Jacob without hesitation, thought he could do it all with a little encouragement. Markee had reservations but really wanted to learn swim. James, well, let’s just say he can climb. I wore him as a hat more days than I care to remember and took months of gentle reassurance for him and his Mom. Meet the “Y-Moms”: Michelle, Stephanie, and Julia. Each arrived with different expectations and hopes, yet quickly recognized a kinship among them. Spending month after month together they became more than “Moms-In-Waiting” and more closely, friends of a “Y-Family,” sharing their life stories. While the “Y-Kids” were learning life skills, character values and swimming, they grew to be conscious of the value of each individual swimmer. Meanwhile a common interest among the moms sparked a “we can ” learn to swim class.
With this decision the pool was filled with fun, laughter and the encouragement of the team spirit as they embarked on their own water adventure. These relationships have led to so much more than warming a bench in the hallway. Lunch dates, playing at the park, birthday parties, babysitting and support for each other when sick or a husband
is at war. Four little swimmers, three fantastic moms and I have built a strong “Y-Community.” I am delighted to report that moms and kids alike, have all learned to swim! Please contact the Aquatics Director, Karen Johnston, at 934-9622 ext. 14 or kjohnston@ymcasr.org for further assistance. See you at the pool!

Leaders’ Club The Taylor Bend Family YMCA Leaders Club is a great opportunity for teens ages 11–18 to build leadership skills that will allow them to become servant leaders in the community. Teens develop these skills through physical education, working with children, volunteering, and learning to work with a group of like-minded teens. In the 2009/2010 school year, our Leaders planned and operated two fundraising events, and helped raise money for We Build People. Leaders Club operates September through June and ends with a week-long trip to Blue Ridge Leaders’ School (BRLS) in Black Mountain, North Carolina. This week-long experience is the essence of leadership
training. BRLS involves numerous clubs and several hundred leaders, their advisors and Y staff. In 2010, 14 Taylor Bend Leaders will attend BRLS. We hope to continue the tradition in 2011! We will be accepting applications during the month of August; applications are available at our Member Services desk. For more information about Leaders Club or how you can sponsor a leader by making a charitable donation to our We Build People Campaign, please contact Jessica Rubio, Youth and Teen Director, at 638-9622 or jrubio@ymcashr.org.

Y-Change Success Story of class, I felt like I was part of a family. I learned that exercising could be fun, and I’ve made some amazing friends along the way. I now look forward to coming to the YMCA every day, and I can’t wait to share my accomplishments with my friends from our Y-Change class. We’re always cheering each other on and celebrating each other when someone achieves one of their goals. Since I joined the gym, I’ve lost about 40 pounds and 3 dress sizes, and I know I couldn’t have done it without Y-Change. My husband and I are now expecting our first child and I know that the steps we have taken to improve our health will greatly improve our roles as parents.” “My name is Ben. Y-Change has given me the tools to understand my fitness and nutritional needs, set goals, and see to it that I meet those
goals. Those tools have helped me improve my overall fitness, increase my energy, compete in my first 5k event, and lose just over 100 pounds in six and a half months since joining the YMCA and beginning the Y-Change program. Along the way, my wife and I have met some great friends in the program and take joy in sharing and hearing the accomplishments and goals we have all met. I’m glad that we have taken the monumental step towards a healthy lifestyle so that we can be a positive influence on our child’s health.”

Summer Resident Camp
We offer weekly sessions from mid-June to mid-August for girls and boys from ages 8-16 years old. Three-week teen programs are available for rising freshman, sophomores and juniors. Campers build confidence, learn sportsmanship, find potential, grow friendships and develop a healthy independence through traditional camp and adventure-based activities. Respect and honesty come packaged in water adventures, woodland walks and campfire sing-a-longs. Friendships are what make campers and counselors return year after year. Well trained staff from around the world make for the experience of a lifetime.
Why the Camping Experience is Important
Camp provides children with a community of compassionate and reliable adults, who foster experiential education. As a result,
children gain a sense of identity, selfesteem, and respect, as well as develop leadership skills and an appreciation for others. Traditional camp activities focus on developing healthy relationships, both peer-to-peer and camper-to-adult. The goal is for campers to become more caring and responsible and to understand the importance of giving. Campers also learn to stand up for their beliefs. Too Good for Drugs Growing up is a risky business—it’s a fact. Developmental risks coupled with environmental risks make the journey through adolescence tough. Every kid needs positive role models and supportive people to help along the way. Each child needs to learn and practice essential life skills to better navigate the challenging passage to adulthood. The YMCA Community Services Branch in partnership with the Virginia Foundation for Healthy Youth teaches kids in YMCA afterschool programs the facts about alcohol, tobacco and other drugs—facts that help kids set goals and make good decisions that contribute to their health and well-being. Program lessons and activities give kids skills for managing emotions, communicating effectively, making positive friendships, countering social influences, analyzing media messages and refusing peer pressure. Its sound instructional methods build self-efficacy and promote
pro-social attitudes and behaviors in fun and engaging ways.

they feel safe and wanted. This is your YMCA.
Helping those in need has never been more important than today. Our neighbors and friends are facing obstacles that as a society we have not had to face before. Sure there have been challenges, natural disasters, and economic nightmares before but I don’t recall all these things happening at the same time.
To be able to serve the community so effectively we need all our members involved in helping to support the programs listed above. We need your time, treasure, and talent to truly make a difference. Every spring, all your YMCAs, run our annual We Build People campaign. This is when you, as our members, can help the YMCA give these opportunities to those who are going through rough times. 100% of your tax deductible contribution goes directly back to make a positive difference in someone’s life.
I thank you from the thousands of kids and families who are helped annually by the We Build People campaign and members like you who have made the commitment to change.
Every year the YMCA tries to make these burdens a little easier. We try to help parents not have to decide whether or not they leave their 8 year old home in the afternoon with the TV and computer as their role model. We run programs for teens that help them make positive choices at a time in their life where a decision could affect the rest of their life. We offer hands on care through fitness to our young people who statistics say they are the first generation that will not outlive their parents because of youth obesity. We offer environments for people of all ages where

Most importantly, please do so because it will make you feel great.

McDonalds Supports the YMCA of South Hampton Roads Vibrant color, movement, and your hand…the three keys to a healthy, nutritionally sound body. Everyone knows that good nutrition and being physically active are essential to maintaining good health. Yet, the overall state of this country is still very unhealthy. It is crucial to stop making excuses and begin to follow these 3 easy guidelines to improved overall health. First, when you look down at your plate at every meal you should see at least 3 colors staring back at you (white, brown, and dull yellow are all the same color). A meal containing 3 colors with at least two being vibrant colors means it should be rich in antioxidants and phytochemicals because of the fruits and vegetables on your plate. As far as the one dull color on your plate…. go for brown! Brown rice, whole grain pasta, whole wheat bread, oatmeal, nuts, seeds, or beans all mean your body is getting complex carbohydrates and fiber at every meal which is crucial to maintaining an adequate body weight and helping your heart and gastrointestinal system. Next you have to move! Only 40% of Americans lead an active lifestyle yet research has shown that exercise helps protect your heart from disease, decrease your risk of diabetes and osteoporosis, and even decrease your risk of certain cancers. It only takes 5-minute intervals six times a day, or 30 minutes of total exercise daily to decrease your cancer and heart disease risk. Try these easy tips: 1. Park far away in a parking lot and power walk into and out of a store
Turn your Rental Home into a Y-Home! Stay at a Y-Amenities property Increase demand for your rental home by boosting your home’s value and offering a variety of fun family activities to your guests on their vacation! We advertise for Y-Homes through our YMCA website, TV commercials, radio
2. Take the stairs up and down in any building you are in twice before going where you need to 3. During commercials of television shows run up and down your staircase or take a quick lap around your house 4. Jog or walk in place every time you are talking on the phone 5. Put on high energy music and dance while you clean your house Finally, Americans do not know portion control, which is a major contributor to the obesity epidemic in this country and the increase in heart disease and cancer. But weight control is all in your hands both literally and figuratively. Your fist is your carbohydrate, your palm is your protein, your thumb tip is your fat, and the cup of your hand is snacks. Follow these simple guidelines to achieve your ideal body weight: 1. 3 fist sizes of starches, potato, or sugar based foods per day announcements, email blasts, printed visitor ads and much more. Your rental guests can access the YMCA when they stay in your home and enjoy the pools, Health & Wellness Center, Group Exercise classes, and so much more. Included in your membership is a free Parents’ Night Out for the young children of your renters. This allows the parents to enjoy a night out, while their children are safe at the YMCA.
2. 5–9 fist sizes of fruits and vegetables per day 3. 3 palm size portions of lean protein per day 4. 3–5 thumb tip size oils or fats per day 5. 1 handful of snacks per day 6. 1 thumb size of cheese per day 7. 3 fists (or 1 c.) of non-fat dairy per day So when you are eating at home, out at a restaurant or going through the drivethrough make sure you choose food with vibrant colors and whole grains, look at your hand for portion control, and then move before and after your meal. Your body and your life will thank you for it! Shaye Arluk, MS, RD McDonald’s Nutritional Consultant Shaye Arluk is a registered dietitian and nutritional consultant for McDonald’s.
