YOUTH DEVELOPMENT The First Tee of Hampton Roads, a program of the YMCA of South Hampton Roads, is a life skills and golf program. The First Tee and the Y’s shared goal of helping youth reach their full potential has resulted in a partnership that helps our community grow and thrive. At The First Tee, our main focus is on youth development while utilizing the game of golf. Unlike any other program, The First Tee teaches nine core values that can be used on and off the golf course. Our hope is that children build their self confidence and self esteem while developing the skills to become better citizens in the community. And, if they love the game of golf, well then that is a bonus! Golf, and the life skills gained through our program, can be practiced for a lifetime.

The First Tee CORE VALUES For 10 years, The First Tee of Hampton Roads has been a significant youth development program within our community, with nine core values learned, practiced and reinforced. These values provide a solid foundation of life skills and character values benefiting our youth and can be applied on the course, at home, in school and throughout their adult lives. Our core values are:

Honesty: the quality or state of being truthful; not deceptive. Golf is unique from other sports in that players regularly call penalties on themselves and report his or her own score. Integrity: strict adherence to a standard of value or conduct; personal honesty and independence. Golf is a game of etiquette and composure. Players are responsible for their actions and personal conduct on the golf course even at times when others may not be looking.

Sportsmanship: observing the rules of play; winning or losing with grace. Players must know and abide by the rules of golf and be able to conduct themselves in a kind and respectful manner toward others even in a competitive game.

Respect: to feel or show deferential regard for; esteem. In golf, it is important to show respect for one-self, playing partners, fellow competitors, the golf course, and for the honor and traditions of the game.

Confidence: reliance or trust in one’s abilities; a feeling of self-assurance. Confidence plays a key role in the level of play that one achieves. Players can increase confidence in their abilities by being positive and focusing on something they are doing well regardless of the outcome.

Responsibility: accounting for one’s actions; dependable. Players are responsible for their actions on the golf course. It is up to them to keep score, repair divots, rake bunkers, repair ball marks on the green, and keep up with the pace of play. Perseverance: to persist with an idea, purpose or task despite obstacles. To succeed in golf, players must continue through bad breaks and their own mistakes, while learning from past experiences. Courtesy: considerate behavior toward others; a polite remark or gesture. A round of golf should begin and end with a handshake between fellow competitors. Players also should be still and quiet while others are preparing and performing a shot. Judgment: the ability to make a decision or form an opinion; a decision reached after consideration. Using good judgment is very important in golf. It comes into play when deciding on strategy, club selection, when to play safe and when to take a chance, the type of shot players consider executing, as well as making healthy choices on and off the golf course. 3

Healthy Living The First Tee of Hampton Roads provides a wholesome environment for children and families. We have two nine-hole courses available to the community, one in Virginia Beach and the other on the Eastern Shore, providing you with an

environment to be active together. We also teach our participants how to incorporate a healthy lifestyle day to day by making healthy choices and becoming active in sports, individually and as a group.

Social Responsibility Part of The First Tee’s mission is to provide accessible, affordable programming to everyone in our community. We want every child that has the desire to experience The First Tee to have the opportunity. Through programs like the Mobile Learning Center (a custom designed, state of the art golf bus equipped to provide The First Tee golf and life skills on location), the National School Program (currently part of the Portsmouth Public Schools and various Virginia Beach Public Schools) and our Eastern Shore golf course, we are reaching out into areas of the community that may not otherwise have these programs available. If you are interested in having the Mobile Learning Center visit your child’s school, please contact our office to schedule a visit. 4

The First Tee Financial Assistance Program It is our mission to provide accessible and affordable golf experiences for every child and family who desire to participate in The First Tee of Hampton Roads program. Assistance is offered based on eligibility and availability, thanks in part to generous donations to our Welcome to the Game campaign. Applications are available at The First Tee of Hampton Roads. Support our Welcome to the Game campaign and help keep The First Tee accessible to all. Call 757 563 8990 for more information. All contributions are tax-deductible.

The First Tee Life SkiLls Experience As The First Tee realized its potential to impact the lives of young people and their communities, character education of youth became the focus. The Life Skills Experience was created to instill in young people important values inherent in the game of golf. Participants learn how these values displayed on the golf course can transfer to other parts of their life, such as home and school. The First Tee Home Office created a curriculum based of life skills and character education, which is the focus of The First Tee and its chapters. This curriculum is what sets us apart!

Life Skills Academies The Life Skills Academies revolve around the Life Skills experience. Teens from across the country who have demonstrated exceptional golf and leadership skills are selected by their chapter to attend these week-long camps that offer life skills and leadership development workshops, golf clinics, career exploration and the opportunity to meet peers from across the country.

The Scholars Program The First Tee developed the Scholars Program offering participants the opportunity to receive recognition for the exceptional achievement in areas of academics, leadership, character development, and chapter and community involvement. The Scholars Program provides qualified participants of The First Tee a gateway to a successful future through higher education. More than 25 colleges and universities throughout the United States have partnered with The

12

First Tee, offering a range of merit-based scholarships that provide assistance with the expense of attending a college or university. Exceptional students designated as Scholars are also eligible to receive scholarships that can be used at any accredited institution.

What Does the first tee mean to you? I am a student of The First Tee program of Hampton Roads and golf is my passion. I tried playing golf when I was six years old, and decided that it was not the sport for me. In July 2008, I took a golf camp during the summer, and I was hooked. Since then I have received instruction at The First Tee. I have attended the facility for the past two years and have participated in numerous camps there, playing in individual and father-son tournaments. My mom encourages me to play for fun and not always the competition. I have learned so much from The First Tee program in regards to core values. I learned to abide by the rules of golf,

I have learned to congratulate my competitors in defeat, and compliment them for a job well done in my victory. I also know to always keep a positive attitude, I must always be courteous to other competitors, congratulating them on a good shot, or giving some advice if they are struggling. I have learned to always persevere, and to do my best, which is all I can offer. The game of golf has helped me judge my decisions on and off the course, whether it is choosing the right club, or respecting adults and others. It is imperative to be honest when recording your score in golf, or in any other situation. Finally, I have learned to respect everyone and everything, everywhere I go. The First Tee program has immensely impacted my life over the last two years, and I cannot imagine how different it would be without its influence. (Student Age 12)

When I was in the 3rd grade I was told I had ADHD, dyslexia and disgraphia. I didn’t know what any of that meant but I sure knew how it felt. In the fourth grade I was introduced to The First Tee and my life changed. I found a world where I belonged! I know that The First Tee has given me opportunities that my learning disabilities could have taken from me. The classes I took gave me direction and the core values that were gifted to me were not only the lessons of life but the rules of the

game. You can’t play golf without Integrity, you can’t keep score without Honesty and you can’t get Respect without giving it first. Several years ago The First Tee put my picture on the side of The Mobile Learning Center; I was in the 4th grade. Now I stand here talking about a future where The First Tee has played a big part…My plans include attending Virginia Tech and then law school. I hope to always give back to The First Tee; I will spend every moment I can out at The First Tee hoping to encourage kids to keep trying no matter what obstacle comes their way. Again I would like to thank The First Tee, my family, most importantly the Lord, for the life I have. (Student Age 12)
