Families
Make the Most of Your Membership
Between work, school and other obligations, it can be a challenge to incorporate family time into our routines. Your YMCA is the solution! YMCAs have always been a place for families, and now the YMCA is dedicating more time, space
that support families, especially those with younger children. ChildWatch, a complimentary babysitting service, is staffed with responsible and qualified individuals who ensure your child is being cared for while you workout. One night a month, children are invited to the YMCA’s Parents’ Night Out program, so they too can have a night of fun while mom and dad enjoy a night out without the children. Both services are benefits of family membership.
If you have recently made the commitment to live healthier, you may be wondering where to begin.
Getting Started
If you haven’t already done so, meet with a FitQuest Coach to develop a personalized fitness plan. Meeting one-on-one will allow you to speak freely about the goals you’d like to accomplish. Your trained coach will devise a plan just for you, and assist you along the way. Before beginning your individualized plan, your coach will: instruct you on how to use the cardio equipment, assign you a pin number for you to electronically log your workouts, show you how the computerized tool hooked up to the resistive equipment will retain personal settings and weight lifted and give you the tools you need to be successful. Did you also know the YMCA replaces all cardiovascular equipment every three years? In 2009, all family centers received new treadmills, bikes, elliptical machines and more, most with personal TV screens and MP3 hook-ups! For added encouragement, take advantage of your 90-day complimentary pass and join a Y-Change group. Here you will meet three times per week to discuss proper nutrition, exercise as a group, and learn small steps to begin living a healthy lifestyle. A trained and caring professional will lead the group through this six-week journey. Y-Change II has been developed for those who wish to continue to benefit from a small-group setting. Maintaining your healthy habits can sometimes be a challenge, especially when you become bored with your current routine. Spice up your workout by trying something new! Many

and programming to encourage families to spend time together in healthy activities. The Interactive Zone is the perfect place for families to participate in healthy activities. Children can challenge their parents in a virtual race on the Expresso bikes while not even realizing they are working out! Youth also receive an exhilarating workout learning new steps on the Xerdance pads. Swimming indoors is always a fun pastime, especially when it’s too cold to play outside. Twelve YMCA centers have indoor pools for your family to enjoy. Free swim, inflatable slides and themed special events are sure to keep your family active and having fun this winter. While there are several other healthy activities for families to participate in like racquetball, rock climbing and basketball, there are also YMCA services
Keep Informed
Of course we can’t fit everything the YMCA has to offer in this magazine, so be sure to regularly visit www.ymcashr. org for the most current schedules and program information. The website is also your resource for learning about the latest news on community partnerships and initiatives. Breaking news alerts will appear on www.ymcashr.org when a situation arises that may affect you. Please ensure Member Services has a record of your email address; not only will the YMCA keep you informed of member events like Holiday Kickoff and Clover Countdown fitness challenges, but you’ll also be kept apprised of member referral programs such as Make the Pass. You can also follow the YMCA of South Hampton Roads on Facebook® and Twitter.
Sentara Clinical Fitness Program Sentara and the YMCA of South Hampton Roads have joined in partnership to provide a clinically managed fitness program: Sentara Clinical Fitness Program. This program was formally called the Sentara ExploreHealth Program and was offered at their Great Neck facility. As their facility aged and expansion was not an option, Sentara realized that reaching out to the YMCA as a partner was a natural fit in fulfilling their objective of expanding the program. Currently the program is being offered at both the Hilltop and Mt. Trashmore YMCAs with anticipation of expanding to other YMCA locations throughout our region in the coming year.
This program is targeted to those who are physician-referred and have been released from traditional therapy. Most of the participants have health issues related to cardiac and metabolic disease or functional impairments. Once these new members are referred to the YMCA by their physician, Certified Clinical Exercise Specialists are present to monitor vital signs and exercise prescriptions. Each member’s exercise program is personalized to fit his or her individual needs based on current medical history, physical capabilities and goals. Each member’s progress is also shared regularly with his or her physician(s). For those members who would like more personalized attention, one-on-one sessions are available and can be purchased for $30 each.
For more information on this program contact Scott Van Geluwe at (757) 481-7656 or Lynn Skeele-Flynn, at (757) 962-5504.
This is an exciting opportunity to join two strong credible organizations and offer a service that previously was not available at the YMCA.
Getting It: Social Media and the YMCA In late August 2009, the YMCA of South Hampton Roads began looking into the use of Social Media for the organization. Very simply, Social Media is defined as user generated content on the web. Social Media is an umbrella term used to describe the various activities that integrate technology, social interaction, and the construction of words and pictures. YouTube, Facebook® and Twitter are some of the most popular and widely used mediums. This interactive nature of social media, and the manner in which information is presented, encourages and thrives on varied perspectives and the “building” of shared meaning, as people share their stories and understandings. It is also a useful communication tool for upcoming events, announcements and breaking news.
While many of you may be familiar with these services for personal use, many nonprofits as well as corporations, use them to stay in touch with the people they serve. We decided that Twitter and Facebook®, specifically, would be a wonderful way to build and maintain relationships with our members who choose to use these online services. While all of this may seem overwhelming
at first, it is intended to be a way to reach you in a more efficient manner and on your own time, in a nonintrusive way. Twitter is a service providing short updates on what is happening, in 140 characters or less. It is a free service and requires nothing more than an email. If you are already using Twitter yourself, for example, and you choose to follow your YMCA family center’s Twitter account, you will receive timely updates and notices to your phone or computer (depending on how you want to receive messages). Facebook® is an enormous social networking site, with over 200 million users, mostly comprised of people sharing information and updates about their lives with their friends over the Internet. The YMCA of South Hampton Roads has created “fan pages” for each individual family center for you to add and ‘become a fan’ of. So please visit www.ymcashr.org for a complete listing of our expanding list of Twitter accounts and Facebook® pages, and start connecting with us today!

New Programs for 2010 Girls’ Volleyball
Did you know that Girls’ Volleyball can be a great sport to open scholarship opportunities for college? Get your start now at the YMCA with our volleyball series. Starting with 101, they will learn the rules of the game, proper setting and serving, as well as the basic plays that advanced teams use. They can then move on to Volleyball 201, where girls engage in inter-squad matches, observe a high school game, and refine their skills. Volleyball 301 completes the cycle with instructional clinics from a travelling league coach and even go head to head with adults! Come join the fun; registration begins in February and the first serve takes place in March.
Ballet
Have you ever wanted to see your little girl light up the stage? Well, YMCA Ballet is a great place to start. Our classically trained instructor will take the children from first position to fifth position and beyond. All along the kids will have an environment and music that appeal to them. No expensive uniforms are required, but a pink skirt and tights always help. Children will present their skills with a choreographed recital at the last session. From Ballet Basics they can move onto Intermediate Ballet, where they refine their positions and begin to learn the technical elements that define a professional ballerina. Finally, they can finish with Advanced Ballet. They will grow to possess the skills that would allow them to audition for a

local ballet company or performing arts studio. The class may even present some demonstrations at community events.
Ray/Starfish For advanced swimmers ages 3–5, who have completed Eels.

Do you want a place where you can have a good game but not have to worry about showing up to work the next day? The YMCA’s Over 35 Basketball League is the place for you. Put a team of friends together who will have a blast in a league that mixes good fun and just enough competition. People with attitudes need not apply because our professional refs will keep the balance the way it should be. Follow your stats online with our league stats page. At the end of the season, the winning team will get their name engraved on the championship trophy and bragging rights for next season. Games start in February so don’t delay and sign up today!
Aquatic Safety: Register now for Swim Lessons Hopefully you will have noticed the new addition to our wall in the pool area. Teens You Can Believe In During the last two weeks in October, something very special happened. Board members and staff, teens and members worked diligently to raise the support needed to sponsor 200 teens in programs designed specifically to build young adults’ spirits, minds and bodies. We do this through our Teen Leaders Club, Teen Extreme Camps and Youth Sports. These programs provide opportunities for young adults to learn confidence, build positive self-esteem, promote health and wellness, develop leadership skills, and provide local volunteer opportunities while making friendships and having fun! We are proud to report that we met our $20,000 goal and would like to sincerely thank everyone who made this dream a reality. To sponsor a teen in the Norfolk community or to learn more about our Teen programs please contact Samantha Lott, Teen Director, at slott@ymcashr.org or (757) 962-5526.
There is no minimum number of times you are required to attend this program. Come once a week or come four times a week—you choose! For more information contact David Wray, Aquatics Director, at (757) 622-9622.

Leading by Example
Quinton Bell is the Health & Wellness coordinator at the Eastern Shore Family YMCA. Not only does he encourage other people to meet their goals, but he sets a great example of how goals are obtainable. On August 1, Quinton had a wakeup call when he had his blood pressure checked. He started working out 30 minutes to an hour, 3-6 times a week, and lifting weights 3 times per week. He also changed his diet and drank 3 quarts of water per day. He went from 295 to 245 in less than three months! His blood

support groups, before-and after-school care scholarships, and camp financial assistance, are only a few examples of addressing human needs like poverty and access to services. YMCA volunteers and funders want to know who is making the greatest impact in helping our most vulnerable as resources shrink in the current economy. Children, adults and families want to know who is there to help meet their needs.
YMCA Mission Work in Hard Times YMCAs across the country are struggling to make their way through tough economic times and remaining strong even in a recession. At the Effingham Street Family YMCA, we have historically viewed support for low-income members as integral to our mission. Sliding scale memberships,
The Effingham Street Family YMCA has developed a continuum of programs intended to serve many of the disadvantaged young families in our community. Such programs include: a Teen Drowning Prevention Program that was carried out over the summer months, a unique parent and child development program that allowed parent and child to unite and learn in an atmosphere that was conducive to building stronger bonds, and literacy programs that are conducted daily during our after-school program, helping children excel in school.
Our community needs to know that the YMCA is fully engaged. What makes us different from other organizations doing similar work? What is the core work we do? Most important, how are people’s lives better as a result of their involvement in the YMCA? Every one of us must deliver our message. Starting with our staff, there is a vital relationship between engagement and development of community. Board members and volunteers are wonderful ambassadors about our work because they are passionate about our purpose. Satisfied program participants will also talk about the ways they have felt the impact of the YMCA on their lives. We’ve all had the profound experience of listening to our members tell their stories. Community engagement, at its most basic, is about what we’re all trying to do: build a better community. -Gina Schafer, Executive Director
Help Your Child Snack Smart Everyone loves to snack, especially kids. Help your kids to snack smart by understanding the why’s and when’s of snacking, as well as the best foods to keep in large supply. Children have small stomachs and tend to eat less at meals, which means that snacks are an important part of making sure your kids get the nutrients they need. Thinking of snacks as important fuel, rather than just a “treat”, may help parents and children make wiser choices. Best snacks include: fresh fruit, raw vegetables, whole wheat or graham crackers, cheese, peanut butter, nuts, yogurt, trail mix, whole grain bread, baked tortilla chips with salsa, unsweetened cereal, hard boiled eggs, plain popcorn, fruit juice or yogurt popsicles, dried fruits.
New in January 2010: Ladies’ Night Out Ladies, do you need a night to hang out with your friends or meet new ones? After a long week, do you want a break from the kids and/or stresses of life? Beginning January 8, join us for a special Ladies’ Night Out at your YMCA. From 6:30–8 pm, enjoy a circuit of your favorite Group Exercise classes followed by a healthy snack and quality girl time. While you play, so can your children; ChildWatch and the Interactive Zone are available until 8 pm. Ladies’ Night Out will be held the first Friday of each month. For more information, please contact Jill Mills at 399-5511.
Healthful Snacking Tips: • Keep healthful snacks at the ready; designate a portion of your cupboard or refrigerator as the snack areas to help kids make wise choices. • Have kids help you pick out healthful snacks at the store and at home. If they pick it, they’re more likely to eat it. • Time snacks for two to three hours before meals so kids will still be hungry for lunch and dinner. • Snacks should satisfy hunger. Resist the urge to offer snacks as rewards for good behavior or to address disappointment. • Sometimes kids say they’re hungry when what they really want is attention. Take some time with your child and he or she will let you know if they’re really hungry. • You set the example, so snack smart yourself. *Source: USDA Food and Nutrition Service and the Texas Department of Agriculture

GREAT BRIDGE/HICKORY FAMILY YMCA 633 S. Battlefield Boulevard, Chesapeake • (757) 546-9622 Monday–Friday 6 am–11 pm • Saturday 8 am–7 pm • Sunday 11 am–7 pm
Splish Splash— New for 2010
The Great Bridge/Hickory Family YMCA will kick off Parent/Child Swim Lessons in the early evening, providing even more options for today’s busy parents. In addition to the 10 am class that has been offered in the past, this popular class will now be offered at 5:30 pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Parent/Child Swim Lessons offer an introduction to the aquatic environment for parents and their children ages 6 months to 3 years. These lessons prepare children for the next level of swim lessons, recreational swimming and water safety. A Parent/Child lesson is an ideal way for a child to learn to swim, in a parent’s arms rather than in a stranger’s, and allows bonding and socialization to occur. During the course of the session of 8 lessons, younger children will work with their parents on water familiarization, self confidence, safety and fun in an aquatic environment. Older children will learn
stroke development and kicking, will become comfortable putting their faces in the water and will learn what to do if they fall into a body of water. “Learning to swim at a very young age has been proven to aid in physical and mental development,” says Aquatics Director, Lisa
Dionne. “It is an excellent opportunity for relaxation and parent/child bonding.” Experts agree that it is never too early to teach a child to swim. The YMCA has been teaching people of all ages to swim for over 100 years! To view our current swim lesson schedules, class descriptions and fees, visit www.ymcashr.org.
Confessions of a First-Time Yoga Student I have been a member for many years, but have never taken a Yoga class until recently. The initial challenge was just working up the courage. I believed the myth: that this 5000-year-old form of exercise is only for very flexible, naturally thin individuals. When I got the nerve to walk through those doors, I was surprised to see that the room was full of men and women, young and old, slender and not-so-slender. I picked up a mat and found a spot. The lights were dimmed, and members sat on their mats, chatting with each other, as gentle music played. The room had a tranquil feel, and as I sat there, I realized that this was the first time all day I had really slowed down.
The class began with simple postures, and I thought to myself, “This is a workout?” I’m from the old school way of thinking - if you want to benefit from exercise, you’ve got to sweat! As the class progressed, so did the challenge. I could feel my muscles working as I held certain poses. More than anything, I feel that this class taught me to be patient and less self-critical. I had convinced myself that everyone else in
In sharing this first-time experience, I have heard many stories and much advice. “My back pain went away when nothing else helped.” “I feel I am in better shape now than ever before.” I wonder what my story will be? The Great Bridge/Hickory Family YMCA currently offers eleven yoga classes throughout the week, with an introductory class on Saturday mornings. Visit www.ymcashr.org for more details.
Our instructor went to the front of the room and after introducing herself asked, “Is this anyone’s first yoga class?” I reluctantly raised my hand. To my surprise, no one turned around to glare at me. She offered advice so I wouldn’t feel lost.

the room would be a yoga pro. However, I realized that other students were as wobbly as I, and also had to bend quite a bit at the knees to reach the mat with their fingers. I have since learned that this is typical for beginners, and improves with more practice. I left the class with a new realization that yoga is an exercise that is accessible to everyone, regardless of age or ability.

Samantha’s Story Greenbrier Family YMCA member, Samantha Travis has a lot to show for her new fitness efforts. Samantha is a freshman at Hickory High School. She knew it was time for a change when she could no longer go shopping for clothes with her friends. The stores her friends frequented did not have the sizes Samantha required. She made a decision to participate in the YMCA’s Y-Change program to achieve her fitness goals along with changes in her diet. Because of her determination and the motivation gained
from her Y-Change coach and peers, Samantha now leads a healthier lifestyle. To date, Samantha has lost 40 pounds! We are very proud of Samantha’s accomplishment. If you know a teen that is ready to make a change like Samantha we have the perfect program. Beginning this winter we will be offering a Y-Change program specifically for teens. Please see our schedule of events for dates and times. Contact Susan Buonviri at 547-9622 or sbuonviri@ ymcashr.org for more information.

New Program for 2010 Strength & Conditioning Clinics
Current recommendations suggest that school-aged youth should participate daily in 60 minutes or more of moderate to vigorous physical activity that is developmentally appropriate and enjoyable and involves a variety of activities. Not only is regular physical activity essential for normal growth and development, but also a physically active lifestyle during the pediatric years may help to reduce the risk of developing some chronic diseases later in life. In addition to aerobic activities, research increasingly indicates that resistance training can offer unique benefits for children
and adolescents when appropriately prescribed and supervised. The qualified acceptance of youth resistance training by medical, fitness and sport organizations is becoming universal. In addition, the health club and sport conditioning industry is getting more involved in the youth fitness market. In the USA, the number of health club members between the ages of 6 and 17 years continues to increase and a growing number of private sport conditioning centers now cater to young athletes.*
for the Amateur Athletic Union, as well as junior and high school sports programs both on and off site. A general strength and conditioning “boot camp” style class is held Saturdays at Greenbrier North from 8:30–9:30 am. This class focuses on sports functional activities including speed, quickness and agility training for the young athlete, however the class is open to any participant 15 years and older. Contact Robert Read, Health & Wellness Director at 366-9622 or rread@ymcashr.org for information.
Sports specific Strength & Conditioning Clinics for soccer, basketball and football are held at the YMCA prior to their respective season. The Greenbrier North YMCA also offers customized programs

Monday–Thursday 5 am–10 pm • Friday 5 am–9 pm • Saturday 7 am–6 pm • Sunday 10 am–5 pm
New Aquatic Programs for 2010 2010 will be a year of great change in aquatics. Swim Lessons are offered on Monday and Wednesday mornings at 9 am for adults, and 10 am and 10:40 am for preschool-aged children. A ten-minute break between all lessons now makes it easier to talk with the instructors, also allowing a little time to play in the pool. Intro to Competitive Swimming will be
returning; it will be offered on Mondays and Wednesdays, and Tuesdays and Thursdays both at 6:45 pm.
Hilltop Swim Club
Monday through Thursday from 3:45 to 4:30 pm. The goal of the Hilltop Swim Club is to prepare swimmers for swim team. All participants must be able to swim 25 yards of freestyle.
ChildWatch
ChildWatch provides our members with quality child care while you utilize the Hilltop Family YMCA facility. ChildWatch is designed for children ages 6 weeks to 8 years of age. For more information on our program you can contact Beth Kretz at 422-3805.
REACH Program The REACH programs were created by the child care staff at the Hilltop Family YMCA. REACH stands for Recreation Enrichment Activities at Club Hilltop. Our goal is to provide an opportunity for children of all ages and experience levels to explore different activities. We have created environments for children to immerse themselves in a variety of fun and engaging activities with a focused approach that will allow them a chance to continue their education after school and beyond the books. We encourage every child who participates in our programs to try different things. Through the wide variety of clubs that are offered, there is every opportunity to try something new one week and work to improve something more familiar the next. We want to create an environment that will foster curiosity and at the same
time nurture the imagination and talents of every child.
There are many activities for adults as well. We continue to offer the Water Exercise classes that are a staple to Hilltop. Our beginner classes include Water Arthritis, Water Aerobics, Ai Chi and Total Cardio. Classes at an intermediate and advanced level include Deep Water, H2CardiO, and Aqua Core. For more information, call Sean Ferrance at 422-3805.
Hours: Monday–Friday, 8 am–2 pm Monday–Thursday, 4–8 pm Saturday, 8 am–1 pm Sunday, 10:30 am–12:30 pm
how they work. We will build short things and tall things, big things and small things.
We also encourage all parents to speak with their children about the various clubs and offer them your guidance and advice as to which clubs they choose to participate in. We want you and your children to be able to design your own “Billy Goat University Curriculum.”
Cheer-Tastic
Cheer-Tastic is centered on cheerleading, and open to both boys and girls. Children are taught group cheers, learning both the steps and the songs. Each child will also have the chance to lead his or her own cheer within the group. The squad will practice many cheers and dances, some with music and some without, all with the goal to be ready to cheer alongside some of the final sports games. The Cheer-Tastic group will also lead a pep rally for the kids in the after-school program. As with all sports clubs, teamwork and sportsmanship will be taught and reinforced.
Lego™ Madness
Kids get a chance to build anything and everything! Activities focus on all elements of building, from how things are built to
We will build vehicles, animals, buildings, space ships, statues and anything else that the children can wrap their imaginations around. Instructors will also arrange teambuilding exercises for the kids to work together towards building some of the bigger projects. Cheer-Tastic and Lego Madness are samples of the clubs that we will be offering. Stop by the Member Service desk for a full listing of clubs. Nathaniel Griffith The physical improvements that Nathaniel has made during his transformation speak for themselves. However, some of the most important benefits he has gained through developing a healthier lifestyle go well beyond the physical realm. He has gained a profound confidence in himself that continues to permeate into many different parts of his life. “After developing greater self-discipline in my exercise and dietary habits, I realized that there were a lot of things in life that were holding me back previously.”
Nathaniel Griffith is living proof that with enough persistence and determination, anyone can make dramatic improvements to his or her level of health. Nathaniel, a 2nd year Law Student at Regent University, recently lost 101 lbs in 14 months- going from a bodyweight of 317 lbs to 216 lbs! But for Nathaniel, the physical benefits go beyond measurements. “I simply feel better physically than I ever have before,” Nathaniel explains. Sadly, the motivation for Nathaniel’s transformation was born of the type of tragedy he wouldn’t wish on anyone. In July 2008, his father suddenly passed away due to a heart attack at age 52. Very shortly after his passing, Nathaniel made the decision that he was going to become a healthier person. At the Indian River Family YMCA, Nathaniel found the facilities and support he needed to passionately pursue his fitness goals. Upon joining the Y, Nathaniel registered for FitQuest. FitQuest is a program that is included in YMCA memberships. “The FitQuest coaches were wonderful to me,” Nathaniel attests. “They did a really good job in answering my questions.” In the beginning, Nathaniel performed resistance training three times a week.
18
On the other days, he would do a cardiovascular workout. As he gained more experience exercising over time, Nathaniel started working out with free weights on his resistance training days. “It’s important to exercise 5 or 6 days a week if you can, so that you can continually create a calorie deficit in your body.” A calorie deficit occurs in your body when you are burning more calories than you are taking in during the same period. Equally important to the amount of food is the nutritional quality of the food itself. Nathaniel says he routinely eats an assortment of good proteins, fats and carbohydrates.
R
Nathaniel is very grateful that the Indian River Family YMCA provided the facilities and help he needed to change his life. “The Y is fantastic! I am a staunch advocate of this place. It gave me the tools I needed to do this. I also like the staff a lot.” Nathaniel’s message to those people seeking to make the same type of dramatic health improvements that he made is simple: “Don’t ever quit! There will be weeks when you will be eating well and exercising hard, but you still won’t lose any weight. You can’t get discouraged. You’ll eventually get there if you are consistent over time. You just can’t quit.”

and Thursday night meetings, all aimed at promoting fellowship, leadership and individual growth. With its extremely dedicated members, Leaders’ Club is something for everyone with the common goal of serving the YMCA and the community through volunteering.
R
A major component of Leaders’ Club is to provide service and assistance to YMCA
programs. Our goal is for each leader to have at least 100 hours of service by May 2010, and at least half of these hours will be completed inside the YMCA. The leaders are willing to do any tasks or jobs that need to be completed in YMCA departments. This could be filing papers, making copies, cleaning offices, greeting members, giving tours, setting up for events, putting away pool supplies, reading to kids, facilitating small games, and just about any help you could use in the YMCA. We look forward to assisting the YMCA in all of its endeavors to build strong kids, strong families, and strong communities! the shape I am in. I began working out at the Outer Banks Family YMCA in June 2009. With the help and support of the YMCA staff (Mr. Dick Drumm in particular), I have been able to improve my walking as well as balance. Following the computerized tool called FitLinxx, the YMCA has designed a program fitted to my unique osteoarthritis needs.
You’re Only Old Once!
For example, I learned that my left leg, with the artificial knee, was able to press 70 pounds. Whereas the right leg, with the Supartz (viscous supplement) injected knee, was barely able to press 10 pounds. Gradually, following the FitQuest program, I have succeeded in strengthening the right leg so that I am able to press 50 pounds.
Turning 80 years old in April 2009 was an amazing and gratifying experience. As Dr. Seuss states, in the book “You’re Only Old Once,” I’m in pretty good shape considering
Recently (September 2009), I returned from a routine visit to various physicians and I have good news. The orthopaedic surgeon gave my right knee an additional injection

The Interactive Zone is a wonderful place for your child to spend time interacting with other young adults while playing the most popular gaming systems like: XerDance, Dance Dance Revolution, Nintendo Wii and our Sports Wall. Engage in friendly competition while enjoying physical activity. Most of our young members don’t even realize they are working out because these activities are so much fun! Our Interactive Zone Coaches use the nationally recognized SPARK curriculum to introduce the children to a wide variety of physical activities including football, jump rope, basketball and field games. This fun, action-packed noncompetitive program allows children to meet new friends and really get their bodies moving! As an added incentive, children who participate in SPARK five times or more during a one-month period receive a free T-shirt. Zumba for Kids creates a party-like atmosphere that is entertaining with a perfect combination of fun and fitness. Both boys and girls alike will get a great workout from these Latin-inspired dance moves. Your kids don’t have to be dancers to attend. The idea is to just keep moving and shaking, elevating the heart rate and burning calories, just like our Zumba classes for adults. The dance moves are designed
specifically for the younger ages, being kid-friendly and easy to follow. Catch the rhythm in Zumba! For a schedule of all Zumba classes being offered at the Taylor Bend Family YMCA, view our Group Exercise schedule online at www. ymcashr.org or stop by Member Services. For more information about Zumba classes, please contact Teresa Mowry, Senior Health
and Wellness Director, at 638-9622 or tmowry@ymcashr.org.

A Chesapeake Bay Adventure YMCA Camp Silver Beach is nestled in 151 beautiful acres on the Chesapeake Bay on Virginia’s Eastern Shore, with 1,200 feet of pristine beachfront offering fun and recreation year round. Camp Silver Beach is one of the largest Y camps in the nation offering activities for youth, teens, families and groups.
Summer Resident Camp
We offer weekly sessions from mid-June to mid-August for girls and boys from ages 8-16 years old. Three-week teen programs are available for rising freshman, sophomores and juniors. Campers build confidence, learn sportsmanship, find potential, grow friendships and develop a healthy independence from family through traditional camp and adventurebased activities. Respect and honesty come packaged in water adventures, woodland walks and campfire sing-a-longs. Friendships are what make campers and counselors return year after year. Well trained staff from around the world make for the experience of a lifetime.
Why the Camping Experience is Important
Camp provides children with a community of compassionate and reliable adults, who foster experiential education. As a result,
children gain a sense of identity, selfesteem, and respect, as well as develop leadership skills and an appreciation for others. Traditional camp activities focus on developing healthy relationships, both peer-to-peer and camper-to-adult. The goal is for campers to become more caring and responsible and to understand the importance of giving. Campers also learn to stand up for their beliefs. These qualities help to build a successful community. Visit www.CampSilverBeach.org for more information and to watch our video.

Day Camp—Is it Really Magic? Summer camp for youth has been around since 1885. Camp Baldhead (later known as Camp Dudley), originally located near Orange Lake in New Jersey, was established by YMCA workers George A. Sanford and Summer F. Dudley as the first residential camp in North America. The camp moved to Lake Wawayanda in Sussex County, New Jersey the following year and then to the shore of Lake Champlain near Westport, New York in 1891. Since then one thing has remained constant—YMCA camps create magical summers for kids.
them to make wise choices throughout life. We want to help them become compassionate, well-rounded and welladjusted individuals who care about the well-being of others and learn to place the needs of others above their own. We also believe play is valuable. Undirected play allows children to learn how to work in groups, to share, to negotiate, to resolve conflicts, and to learn self-advocacy skills. When play is allowed to be child-driven, children
What makes YMCA camps so special? For starters, caring, honesty, respect, responsibility and faith are the cornerstones of every YMCA program.
Listen to any camp program director and they talk about the “magic” of their camp. Could much of the success of youth camping be attributed to an original formula—a secret recipe that’s been duplicated year after year? How could anything continue to be popular for so long, with such passionate proponents in every generation? Magic? The whole purpose behind YMCA camping for over 125 years has been to build character and develop friendships that last over time.

In addition, the YMCA adds a unique component to help children develop positive identities, values, and social skills. That component is known as “Developmental Assets.” These are 40 essential character-building blocks that young people need to grow up to be healthy, competent, caring and responsible adults. Our goal is to help youngsters acquire these building blocks to create a firm foundation for life—a positive identity; a strong sense of power, purpose and self-worth; and values that will enable

impossible to visit all of them all of the time. The invitation was given to come to Camp Silver Beach work week, and since Sherry and I always do things together, we learned how to paint together and dry wall together. [Sherry] …and we are still married! Sherry, you have been a member of the Indian River Family YMCA board for many years. Could you tell us about that experience?
An interview with
John and Sherry Atwood Few couples can rightly claim that they are the parents of 1,000 children. For John and Sherry Atwood of Virginia Beach, it is a most fitting distinction. Other than their faith and their profound love for each other, they have found nothing more rewarding in their lives than helping children at the YMCA. The Atwoods were brought up in a small town in Indiana where they learned that the more you give, the more you have. From their distinguished service on YMCA boards, to taking up hammers at Camp Silver Beach, to quietly buying eyeglasses for a little two-year old girl at the Indian River Family YMCA, they selflessly and purposefully put their core values into action. John and Sherry are a couple that shows that giving doesn’t just involve writing a check. While they have been financially generous to the YMCA for years, they are so much more. It is the giving of their time and talent, the inspiration of others, and the everyday things they do for children that have been the hallmark of their service to the YMCA. Thus, it came as no surprise to those of us who have known the Atwoods that they were honored with the Order of the Red Triangle in 2009. What did it mean to you to receive the YMCA’s highest award for service, the Order of the Red Triangle?
It shocked both of us. We were so moved and honored by it because it is such a prestigious award. We never had any children and the YMCA has filled the empty spot. We started at the Indian River Family YMCA just to work out and then were asked to be on the board. As we learned more about the YMCA, we saw our purpose in life. Here was a place where we could care for children and help not just one or two kids but many. No matter how much you give to the YMCA it gives back. Both of you have volunteered at Camp Silver Beach work weekend for several years. What motivates you to give your time and talent? Sometimes we discover talents that we never knew we had! Who thought we could lay tile or build decks? It was a time for us to get to know each other and to enjoy the fellowship with others. We went because we were building a camp that would help the development of the kids who went there. Those kids would learn honesty, responsibility and all the Y values. John, you just joined the board of Camp Silver Beach this year. What attracted you to camp? I’ve been involved with Camp Silver Beach in some capacity since construction 10 years ago, so it was a natural progression to be on the board. In the mid-90s, I was the properties chairman at IR and we used to go around and visit all the Y properties in a day. The Y has grown so much it is
My experience as a board member has been both wonderful and educational. After serving for a number of years, I was asked to chair, which I did for 3 years. I have enjoyed working with and getting to know the dedicated members who have served on the IR board. Just like my experience as a board member, when I first joined the Y, I started with the beginner step aerobics, and had to work my way up. Neither one of us was really into exercise other than working in the yard. We hit the big 4-0 and that helped motivate us to join. I got lucky and joined a step class that I really liked. I currently attend numerous exercise classes and enjoy all of them. We always tell others about our Y experience; we have planted a seed with many people. What motivates you to support the YMCA so generously year after year? [John] I love seeing the parents come in. Recently, a dad was in the pool with his little girl. I could tell dad absolutely loved his daughter, and she loved her dad. They were having so much fun. Bringing families together is what it is all about. All that Sherry and I do is simply for the love of it and the caring. We see impact on other people’s lives. We see it when kids go to camp or when lives are touched because people care enough to give to We Build People. We feel that is a return above and beyond our dues here. How has the YMCA provided mental and spiritual support to you? Exercise makes you feel good about yourself. It isn’t just the friendships and fellowship, but it is about making us healthy too. The whole purpose for coming here was for our health and the need to take better care of ourselves. You have equipment here that you couldn’t possibly have at home and that is how it all got started. For more information on giving back to your community through YMCA service, contact Tom Marshall at (757) 962-5519.
