Today’s Visitors Chepstow Town FC Founded in 1878 Chepstow Town FC is the most easterly situated of all Welsh League clubs. Formerly known as Chepstow Castle FC fixtures have been played at various venues around the town from Bulwark to St. Arvans and also at St. Mary’s institute ground Due to Chepstow Council’s road expansion plans and the proposed re-development of the St. Mary’s ground the club was relocated to the present Larkfield ground in the late 1980’s. In 1997 the club gained promotion back to the Welsh League and remained there until being relegated back to the Gwent County League in 2007. Despite this setback Chepstow Town were determined to regain Welsh League status and this was achieved in 2012 with the club finishing as Gwent County League Division 1 champions. This was followed by the club achieving promotion to Welsh League Division 2 at the end of season 2012-2103. Over the years the club has been graced with some notable managers including Brian Harris (Everton and Newport County) and Barry Vassallo (Arsenal and Plymouth Argyle). Chepstow Town players who became professional footballers were Ollie Burton (Newport County, Norwich City, Newcastle United and Wales); Colin “Rocky” Hudson (Newport County and Cardiff City) and Harry Harris (Newport County, Portsmouth and Wales).

After an indifferent start to season 2016-2017 the first team gradually found their form and only just missed out on promotion by finishing 3rd on goal difference. This season the club hope to go one better and achieve promotion back to Division 2. Following the decision of Malcolm Hardy not to seek re-election the club now has a new Chairman, Rob Moore. Rob has been a stalwart of the club for many years and is hoping that the club can now progress on and off the pitch to establish itself as a top Welsh League side. The club was sorry to lose the services of co-manager Nicky Morgan who took a coaching position with Newport County. Long serving players Ian Turner and Richard Jago assisted manager Dave Livermore on the coaching side. Darren Jones the ex Newport County player took over at the start of 2018/19 season and brought in some new players which started well but things did not go to plan and both parties decided to go there separate ways after an indifferent start which resulted in Chepstow lingering towards the bottom of the table. Paul Lovell took temporary charge before Chepstow appointed Ian Summers from Marshfield and Paul Berry from Newport Civil Service as managers and Lewis Thomas as coach who was previously with Newport County academy, after a tough start things are turning and Chepstow are currently mid table with a lot of restructure going on both on and off the pitch. This season has seen another change of management with Andrew Wenzel taking over and Lewis Thomas staying on as Assistant manager where they have had a mixed start but are now hoping for a good run with nearly all the squad available.

The Match Report Welsh Cup Round 1 - Friday 18th October 2019

Cambrian & Clydach BGC 7 – 3 Ynyshir Albions FC The Cam Army come out on top in the Rhondda Derby in Welsh Cup Our 1st venture into the nations prime cup competition comes to an end in round one (after coming through two qualifying rounds) although our clubs members and supporters can be very proud of our players who gave their all but were ultimately 2nd best after Cambrian upped their game after edging a very close 1st half. A decent crowd turned out to the M&P Group 3G despite the awful weather and it were the Albions supporters making the noise early after Liam Eason pounced on a home error to give Ynyshir the lead. The lead was short lived however with an instant Cambrian reply but Ynyshir got straight back on front foot causing problems with their quick, direct play and they regained the lead through a Leon Anstee header for 2-1. Cambrian slightly rattled and frustrated but they never panicked and again equalised executing a set piece off the training ground for 2-2 and Cam got into their stride and went on to lead for the 1st time on the half hour 3-2. Into the 2nd half Cambrian made early changes, came out sharper with far more purpose and quickly made it 4-2. Ynyshir tried to rally and were so unlucky not to reduce the deficit when Liam Eason’s sweet strike hit the inside of the post but from there Cambrian attacked and were awarded a messy penalty coolly put away for 5-2 and it were the end of their challenge.

The Match Report Welsh Cup Round 1 - Friday 18th October 2019

Cambrian & Clydach BGC 7 – 3 Ynyshir Albions FC The Cam Army come out on top in the Rhondda Derby in Welsh Cup Cambrian’s quality of play were now hitting heights Ynyshir’s gutsy effort couldn’t quite match, superb movement and use of the ball had Ynyshir pulled all over the park at times and further goals put gloss onto the score line. Young Eason did bundle in a late consolation for Ynyshir’s efforts but they were well beat by a better Cambrian side 2nd half. Best wishes to Dane Williams and Cambrian for the rest of their cup run and Cymru South season, was a pleasure to share the stage with such a good football club. Despite defeat the we can be very proud of our players and our continued effort as a club to go the right direction. A huge positive was to see Leon Anstee back in action for 1st time since August. Morgan and McGregor will also to return to our frontline and there’ll be more to come from Jacob Isaacs who debuted off the bench last night. Thank you for all the support the club has had over social media in the build up to the game and to all those who turned out for us not only last night but all season! #COTB
