The Match Report W John Owen Cup Quarter Final - Saturday 2nd March 2019

Brecon Corries FC 1 – 0 Ynyshir Albions FC

The Buns travelled in strong numbers for what has always been a tricky fixture for them over the years, as both clubs put their strong league campaigns aside to face each other for the first time this season. The Buns were once again slow to get going as the home side looked to get the ball down but despite them dominating possession they struggled to create any clear chances, as the Buns looked to threaten on the break when they managed to get the ball out wide. The Buns were lacking any rhythm to their play and gave away possession too easily as the home side looked more organised across the park. Then what seemed a moment of fortune for the Buns, with Brecon having to replace their striker with their keeper for an injury surely that would play into the Bun’s hands. It was the Buns who ended the better of the two teams with the keeper making three superb saves in the last 15 minutes, two from Craig Wells and then with seconds left in he made what seemed an impossible save from Liam Eason from point blank range as both sides headed in all level at HT. The Buns started the second half as they did the first lacking structure across the field as the home side began to dominate the play further up the park which pressured the Buns to giving away possession and break up their play. In fairness though despite Brecon dominating possession, keeper, Dan Hurton was kept quiet for most of the second half, the Buns were forced into a change. Sean Jones coming off with a calf injury to be replaced by Jamie Rewbury early into the half. The only goal of the game came from a touch of fortune. The Buns would not be happy how the free kick was awarded beforehand but had themselves to blame for giving away possession and getting caught on the break. The resulting free kick took a huge deflection off the wall to leave Hurton stranded giving him no chance as the ball sneaked into the far corner, 1-0 Brecon. There was plenty of time for the buns to get back into it as they made two changes with Ceirion Mason and Zack Philpott coming on, but the Brecon back four shut out any momentum to the Buns build up. They were unable to create any chances from there on in as the home side held on to see their names go into the hat for the semi final draw. In fairness on the day Brecon deserved it and the Buns will now need to quickly dust themselves down as their attentions turn to what will be a very tough run in to their domestic campaign. A huge thank you to the buns faithful who travelled in numbers for the fixture not the performance we’ve come to know from the buns this season but this is a great group of players who now need to rally around each other and put the work in on the training ground. We are back on the Oval next Saturday be great to see you all there. #COTB
