Today’s Visitors Merthyr Saints FC
Merthyr Saints were elected to the Welsh Football League in 1995, after winning the South Wales Amateur League for the third time whilst playing under the name of Hoover Sports. Promotion to Welsh League Division 2 was achieved at the first attempt. In the year 1999, Hoover Sports merged with St. Illtyds FC changing their name to Merthyr Saints FC. Merthyr Saints remained in Welsh League Division 2 for ten consecutive seasons with their highest finishing position being fifth in 2003/04. Merthyr Saints were unfortunate to be relegated to Welsh League Division 3 at the end of the 2006/07 season after finishing fourth from bottom of division 2. In season 2008/09 Merthyr Saints were relegated once more and returned to the South Wales Amateur League. In 2009-2010 due to a restructure of Welsh football a young Merthyr Saints side found themselves demoted a division. Fortunately happier times were just around the corner! In 2011 Merthyr Saints enjoyed an extraordinary run in the Welsh Cup. After winning two preliminary rounds and then beating Welsh league opposition in rounds 1 & 2 they reached round 3 (last 32). In round 3 and in front of a crowd approaching 400, it took Welsh Premiership team and former Welsh Cup winners Bala Town to end ‘the Saints’ proud cup run. In season 2012-2013 Merthyr Saints were promoted back to South Wales Amateur League Division 1 after finishing the season as SWAL Division 2 champions. Merthyr Saints now play in the recently formed (2015) South Wales Alliance Premier League where under the guidance of the very youthful management of Rhys Llewellyn they are hoping to mount a promotion challenge to enable them to once more return to Welsh League Football.

The Match Report Nathaniel Car Sales League Cup Rd 2 - Saturday 21st September 2019
Ynyshir Albions FC 2 -5 Pontyclun FC
The Buns’ League Cup Run ended by clinical Pontyclun Better game made of it 2nd half, not as comfortable for the visitors that score line suggests but the game was as good as done at HT with us trailing 0-3. 1st half was simply not good enough, Pontyclun looked stronger, quicker and were by far the better team all over the park. The manner of the goals was the biggest disappointment with Pontyclun big striker causing all the problems, from a goal kick he teed up an unmarked runner for 0-1 and within minutes from a thrown we switched off, he rolled his man and finished well from close range 0-2.
We then lost Joe Eason to a very nasty cut after a bad clash of heads with a Pontyclun defender, we wish Joe well and hope to have him back soon. After the stoppage which also saw the Pontyclun defender substituted (we wish him well also) the away side picked up where they left off, we were caught on the ball and some slick one touch passing opened us up and it was getting all to easy for the visitors 0-3. Finally with 35 minutes played Ynyshir came to life and started to compete in the tie and on HT were so unlucky not to be back in it when Scott Jones burst forward, beat the oncoming keeper to the ball and from an angle on his wrong foot the gaffer Craig Wells fired wide.
The Match Report Into the 2nd half Ynyshir started with far more purpose, and Wells did pull one back finishing well on the volley from a superb Cory Morgan cross who was by far Ynyshir’s brightest player on a bad afternoon.
Pontyclun for the 1st time in the afternoon looked slightly uncomfortable and it should of been game on but within minutes, again Ynyshir switched off and were undone by quick passing and willing runners 1-4. But unlike the 1st half Ynyshir dug in and began to fight and with 25 minutes remaining the skipper Scott Jones broke from midfield and fired superbly into the bottom corner 2-4. Although remaining a threat breaking Pontyclun where now on the back foot as Ynyshir threw everything into attack and Jamie Williams who made a positive impact off the bench worked the ball well to Cei Mason who turned superbly and did everything right firing low only for the away keeper to make an outstanding save to keep the two goal cushion intact. The away side defended everything that was thrown their way and right at the death finished it with a superb strike that put a bit of gloss on the score line.
Bad exit of the cup for us who as a club are very proud of our home Ynyshir Oval. Today’s defeat was our 1st here for 19 months and our worst home defeat in 5 years. Next weekend we’ll try and respond as best we can as we host Merthyr Saints in the JD Welsh Cup 2:30pm. #COTB
