CLUB NEWS Thanks for the memories Craig Wells Following a cracking win, superb battle and performance to take our 1st away Welsh League 3 points away to Abertillery Bluebirds last Saturday the announcement was made after the game that it was to be gaffer Craig Wells’ last day in charge of the club along with his assistant Daniel Lever. The decision was made some weeks ago before our victory at home v Treharris but credit and thank you to Craig who would not make a sudden exit leaving the club without a manager and desperate for a replacement. Massive respect to both Craig and Dan who gave everything in training, on match day and beyond right up until last Saturday’s final whistle.
Although saddened and initially surprised by the decision, as a club we fully understand Craig’s reasons to step down, support his decision and are thrilled he will remain on the club committee. Craig always said he would only step down leaving a strong squad of players and knowing someone capable was ready to take over. He’s kept his word and this great group of players with potential to further itself in the Welsh League will immediately be taken over by ‘Hoppy’ Craig Hopkins who we now welcome and announce as our new 1st team manager. Hoppy again an ex player of ours who understands the club and who most notably was our youth team manager last season guiding them undefeated to the South Wales Youth league title. He has the full backing of he club committee and we now look forward to him getting started with the players taking us into 2020. Again big thank you to Wellsy and Lever!
CLUB NEWS Thanks for the memories Craig Wells Ynyshir boy born and bred who signed for the club at 17. An Albion to the core who was a major part of the clubs most successful years in the early 2000s with only promotion to the Welsh League not being achieved. Playing Honours: South Wales Senior League 1 Champion South Wales Senior League 2 Champion CW Bruty Cup Winner FA Senior Cup Winner South Wales Player of the Year 2003. After a decade of Welsh League football elsewhere Craig was appointed the clubs player manager in summer 2015 and still had the burning desire he had back in 2001 to take his hometown club to the Welsh Football League. 2015/16 - South Wales Alliance 2 Champions 2016/17 - South Wales Alliance 1 Runners Up, W. Today’s Visitors Penrhiwceiber Rangers AFC The team was formed as Penrhiwceiber AFC in 1961 Founder members of the club were Billy Cooksley, Tony Jones and Chris Kerr who are still involved with the club today. they became Penrhiwceiber Welfare in 1967 In 1984 the club joined forces with the then Glasbrook Rangers to form the name they hold today Penrhiwceiber Rangers. The ground of Glasbrook Field has been their home since 1961 and since winning promotion in the pyramid have seen the ground develop into what you see today. The club has achieved great things since 1991/92 when they won the double of South Wales Amateur League and Corinthian cup winners, this saw them progress to the welsh league. in their first season there they got to the final of the league cup and the following year won the league to gain promotion to division two, further success saw the club gain promotion to division one and were well placed to try and secure Welsh Premier league football. Stephen Haggett has been instrumental in all the years since becoming team manager, gaining success upon success and with Paul Roberts has his number two secured a run of championships and cup victories before leaving the club for one season in 1997. Recent years has seen the club gain promotion to division one and relegation back to division two where they are today. The club has had some great players over the years, Barrie King, Michael Clark, Graham Hole and in the successful years, Gary Jones, Gary Conway, Glyn Davies, Nathan King, Dean Brown, Paul and Daren Bevan , Andrew Holden, Paul Parker and Neil Davies To name but a few. The club has ambitions and this season has seen it return to the routes of blooding the youngsters from last seasons youth team as well as some local players who are good enough to make the grade. The Match Report Welsh League Div 2 - Saturday 14th December 2019
Abertillery Bluebirds 1 – 2 Ynyshir Albions FC The Buns get their 1st away 3 points of the season After the bitter disappointment of last weeks performance and result a big response was needed and we got it to deservedly take 3 points against a very tough and top team in Abertillery Bluebirds. Still looking for our 1st away Welsh League victory we started much sharper than in recent weeks and Zack Philpott who was again a stand out performer in what’s turning out an excellent season for him rattled the Abertillery cross bar early. Whilst Abertillery had plenty of the ball Ynyshir remained organised and limited the home attack to very little sight of goal. Ynyshir struggled to create themselves although spending majority of the 45 on the front foot. A wicked delivery from Callum Westcott who had a solid game at right back was just too high for Huw McGregor who headed wide. Ynyshir would start quick again second half and Liam Eason broke from midfield firing a great low drive well saved by the Abertillery goalkeeper. One clear advantage the home side had was its height and danger from set pieces and on 50 minutes they struck, a soft freekick conceded, great delivery whipped in for a free header glanced into the far post 1-0. Ynyshir have certainly been here before this season but credit to their character and reaction as they struck back instantly. Leon Anstee got in behind, cut inside and delivered a superb cross into the middle with great desire from Cory Morgan to get on the end of it and he did finishing from close range 1-1.
The Match Report Abertillery Bluebirds 1 – 2 Ynyshir Albions FC The superb Anstee was proving a handful for the home defense and he came close to giving Ynyshir the lead with a superb turn and shot well saved by the home keeper. Abertillery then went on to have their best chance of the game lifted high and wide trying to beat Ynyshir’s stand in keeper Lee Scott who we thank doing a fine job in the Ynyshir goal. As the game went on tempers started to flare and the game got feisty with both teams throwing everything at a winner. Both sets of fans were urging their teams on and it were Ynyshir who struck in the final 10 with a fine individual goal from Liam Eason who turned, dribbled in between two defenders and rifled his shot straight through the Abertillery keeper for 2-1. Ynyshir saw out a late surge from the home side for a cracking and deserved away 3 points. Not known by the players at the time but this would be the final time they played for Craig Wells and it was a superb and deserving final result for the departing Gaffer. There’ll be no living off past glories now with everyone having to work and prove themselves over with new manager Craig Hopkins taking over immediately. Hoppy’s 1st game in charge will be at home on Saturday v title challengers Penrhiwceiber Rangers followed by the club’s Xmas do to finish off an historic 2019! #ThankYouWellsy #WelcomeHoppy #COTB
