Today’s Visitors Treharris Athletic Western The football club that was formed at the same time as the Village which was born as a result of the sinking of a coal mine in 1873, known as the “Harris Navigation Colliery”. The Township which grew around the mine was named after the owner Frederick Harris. Football was brought to the area by the men who arrived to work in the mine. Until this time soccer was a game played in the North and over the border in England. Treharris Football Club was formed in 1889, some four years prior to the Treharris Workman’s Hall opening (later to be the Palace Cinema and seven years before St. Matthias Church. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Treharris became the centre of the surrounding Villages, which today constitutes an area of over 15,000 people. In 2009 Treharris Athletic merged with the Edwardsville based Western Hotel FC to become Treharris Western Athletic. The Merthyr Express reported on the 5 th of April , 1890. Treharris beat Mardy, 4 goals to 1, in a charity football match, played at Treharris, infront of a crowd of 1,000 spectators. The football Club is the oldest in South Wales and in 1902-1903 were the founder members of The Welsh Football League. Prior to the Welsh League being formed Treharris were founder members of the South Wales League. Treharris going down in history as the league first champions.

The Match Report Welsh League Div 2 - Saturday 16th November 2019
Ynyshir Albions FC 2 – 0 Panteg AFC The Buns back to winning ways Tight tough game between two sides in need of points but it were the home side who improved after half time, had positive impacts off the bench to take all 3 points. The 1st half was a very tight battle with Panteg if any team just having the edge although it were Ynyshir who came closest with a Cei Mason effort being cleared off the line.
Panteg were little sharper starting 2nd half coming closest hitting the outside of the post but within the hour Ynyshir introduced Cory Morgan and Leon Anstee off the bench and the game started to turn Ynyshir’s way. Liam Eason energy was creating chances from the away side over playing, he had a chance well saved before Zack Philpott corner beat the Ynyshir runners and Panteg goalkeeper but was superbly cleared off the line.
The game entered the final quarter with one goal either way looking like it would seal it and Ynyshir were desperately close when Cory Morgan raced clear from an exquisite Jamie Rewbury diagonal, 1st touch perfect beat the away keeper only for it to roll agonisingly the wrong side of the post.
The Match Report Welsh League Div 2 - Saturday 16th November 2019
Ynyshir Albions FC 2 – 0 Panteg AFC In a game so tight you’d wonder if Ynyshir’s best chance had come and gone but the home press remained good when Panteg over played and Anstee was soon in on goal, brought down by last defender, advantage played and Liam Eason was then brought down rounding the away goalkeeper penalty. Up stepped the skipper Scott Jones who coolly slotted home under pressure for 1-0.
Frustrated the away side soon lost their discipline and were lucky more than once to keep 11 men on the pitch. Ynyshir managed the game well once in their favour and top scorer Huw McGregor sealed the victory finishing well that yet again came from a good Ynyshir press.
Wasn’t a classic but non the less an important and much welcomed 3 points, well done to the players and management. Next Saturday we travel to Treowen Stars in a Welsh League 2 fixture, 2pm kickoff. #COTB
