Today’s Visitors Treowen Stars AFC Treowen Stars were formed in 1926 and played most of their football in the Abertillery & District and West Mon leagues. It was in the early 70’s under the Chairmanship of Archie Davies that Treowen now in the Mon Senior League planted the seeds of today’s success. In 1973, new changing rooms were erected just below the field, at “Bush Park”, largely paid for with proceeds of a very successful Tote, run by the Committee at the time. It wasn’t until 1984 that, the club was given licence to sell Alcohol on the premises. It didn’t take long to reconstruct the inside of the building, since at that time a very strong social element had been very instrumental in keeping the club going financially. In 1986, won promotion from the 3rd Division of the now Gwent County League, Treowen started the climb up the ladder. In 1991, Treowen gained promotion from Division 2 and a year later clinched the first division title at the first attempt. This was at the time of the introduction of the “Pyramid” system and Treowen were offered a place in the Welsh League. Within weeks the required improvements were completed and Treowen entered the Welsh League. In 1992, their first season in the Welsh League, Treowen won the League by March. The following year Treowen again won promotion, this time finishing Runners-up losing out on goal difference, in the same season they also finished Runners-up in the Cyril Rogers Cup Final losing to Barry Town. Treowen made amends in 1997-98, winning the League Cup, 4-3(aet) against B.P.Llandarcy in what was a very exciting final. Treowen were relegated from the Welsh League in 2006, but were promoted from the Gwent County League in 2010 after completing the League and cup double. Treowen have since stayed in Division Three of the Welsh League finishing 12th last season After spending the past two seasons once again establishing itself as a Welsh League club everyone will be going all out to attain Tier 3 status when Welsh Football is reorganised for the start of the 2019/20 season

The Match Report Welsh League Div 2 – Friday 22nd February 2020
Ynyshir Albions FC 3 – 2 Pontyclun FC Skipper Jones at the Double
We’ve made no secret how highly we’ve rated Pontyclun having been on the end of 2-5 and 0-5 defeats to them this season but yesterday belonged to us on Cambrian 3G with a 2nd half that tells you everything this club is about and what has taken us through leagues in the past few seasons. Guts, heart, character and passion in abundance! Local lads who care deeply about the shirt they put on. 1st half Ynyshir with a squad thin down to injury and suspension spent a lot of the 45 under pressure playing into the strong wind. Daniel Hurton saved Ynyshir well on numerous occasions early on as Pontyclun looked to open the scoring. At the other end the superb Leon Anstee brought a cracking save from the away keeper and Huw McGregor failed to connect well at the back post from a superb Anstee cross. Late in the half Pontyclun cut Ynyshir open with great passing and movement only for Hurton to deny them again as the pressure continued to build. Just as it looked it would be goalless at the break Pontyclun struck on 42 minutes, a well hit strike from distance took a wicked deflection off Alex Rees 1-0. The goal rocked Ynyshir and Hurton’s cross bar was rattled on half time as the away side threatened for more. Pontyclun lifted by their goal were sharper starting the 2nd half but the game soon changed massively when Kailum Williams and Cei Mason combined down the right crossing to Anstee who was brought down by the keeper for a penalty. Up stepped captain Scott Jones who sent the keeper the wrong way 1-1.
The Match Report Welsh League Div 2 – Friday 22nd February 2020
Ynyshir Albions FC 3 – 2 Pontyclun FC Skipper Jones at the Double The initial reaction to the goal was good from the away side but Ynyshir now lifted were starting to look threatening led by the energy of the skipper Jones in midfield and the growing influence Ynyshir’s wide men Mason and McGregor were starting to have on the game in support of Leon Anstee who was just proving to be too much for the away defence. And it were Anstee who then gave Ynyshir the lead finishing from Masons cross for 2-1 to the joy of the Ynyshir support. Pontyclun looked disoriented and didn’t have in them what Ynyshir were willing to put into this game. Within minutes it were 3-1, Anstee again sent clear and was brought down whilst rounding the keeper. Up stepped Jones again and riffled in his 2nd penalty. The game was there for Ynyshir and both Joe Eason and Zack Philpott came close to a 4th goal as the visitors were rocking.
Pontyclun did eventually pick up putting Ynyshir under late pressure and after they were gifted a 2nd goal a nervy finale followed but Ynyshir held on with Alex Rees and Sean Jones excellent at the heart of defence protected so well by the superb Jacob Isaacs who like many had a massive 2nd half. A top win and three points for this club, brilliant reaction to the disappointing home defeat last time out. Credit to manager Craig Hopkins who despite the absentees has full belief in his squad and wanted this game on and switched to Cambrian 3G. Thank you again to Cambrian for their help and assistance Thank you as always to those who turned out to support, Panteg away 2pm next Saturday if it ever stops raining.
