Today’s Visitors Newport City FC The club was initially formed in 1963 as Spencer Works AFC and joined the Newport & District League. The club later entered the Gwent Premier League, winning it in 1970-1 and 1971-2 and was then elected to the Welsh Football League for the 1972-3 season, where we have been ever since. The club spent most of the next twenty seasons in the middle division of the league and in 1988 we changed our name to Llanwern AFC to reflect the change of name of the steelworks on whose ground we played. This change coincided with a change in the club’s fortunes and we gained promotion to Division 1 in 1992-3. The club spent a number of years between the top two divisions and in 2002 we won the Welsh League Cup. In 2003, we re-located to the Newport Stadium where we continue to play today. League re-organisation led to Llanwern AFC dropping to Division Three in 2010-11 and spending two mediocre seasons there before promotion back to Division Two for the 2014-5 season. In May 2016 the FAW agreed that the club could change its name to Newport City FC for the 2016-17 season. The club almost folded in the summer of 2016 when the long serving Chairman and Secretary both retired, but a new Chairman stepped in to keep the club going with a group of core players, this despite the departure of a number of players. The club brought in a new manager in Sam Houldsworth, and despite building the side over the course of the season, Newport City were relegated to Division 3. A new committee was formed in the summer of 2017 and new players recruited in order to ensure Welsh Football League status and push for promotion back to Division 2 at the first attempt. In 2019 the club established 4 new teams, a Youth Team, a Development Team, a Ladies Team and an u16 Girls team.

The Match Report Welsh League Div 2 - Saturday 16th November 2019
Ynyshir Albions FC 5 – 0 Treharris Ath Western The Buns make it two home wins in a row Scoreline a harsh ending for the visitors, who had a big period of the game at 3-2 but it was Ynyshir who finished strong winning the game in the final quarter 5-2. Again Ynyshir reshuffled suffering from absentees and they were slow starting in a scrappy opening to the game which didn’t come to life until 20 minutes in when Treharris took the lead, a free kick was put into the Ynyshir box from deep, the marking poor and the away side headed home for 0-1. Treharris’ joy was short lived however when they went cold from kickoff and within a minute of the restart, the ball found Huw McGregor wide left who cut inside and finished 1-1. The equaliser lifted Ynyshir who were now getting on top the game and they took the lead on the half hour with an absolute screamer at distance into the top corner from Zack Philpott who was outstanding all afternoon. Ynyshir upped the tempo and the Treharris keeper saved very well from Cory Morgan and Cei Mason before on HT Philpott’s cross was parried to Morgan who finished well for 3-1. Into the 2nd half Ynyshir were again slow staters and miscommunication led to a mistake letting Treharris in behind who like plenty of other teams already this season showed Ynyshir these chances don’t go unpunished in Welsh League. The goal brought a big reaction from the away side who started being 1st and winning the ball all over the park with Ynyshir’s play much rushed and panicked.
The Match Report Welsh League Div 2 - Saturday 16th November 2019
Ynyshir Albions FC 5 – 0 Treharris Ath Western They were forced to defend, desperately at times with a couple of important blocks and a big handball shout from the away side. Ynyshir lost the influential Jacob Isaacs and were struggling for composure but once they eventually rode out the storm they finished strong in the final 20 minutes which would win them the game. McGregor’s strike hit the post just before hard work from substitute Jamie Williams was rewarded with Mason being brought down for a penalty. Up stepped Scott Jones who’s never hit such a bad penalty for the club but luckily his saved effort came straight back to him to score from the rebound 4-2. Big sigh of relief from the home side and Ynyshir went on to put gloss on the scoreline with Philpott and Drew Caple combining working the ball to Liam Eason who drilled his shot from outside the box into the bottom corner. Well done all on another 3 points and big thank you to the home support for sticking at it in freezing temperatures, hope to see you all again next Saturday as we host current league leader Newport City 2pm #COTB
