Ynyshir Albions FC 1 – 0 Cardiff Draconians AFC
A credit to the buns ground staff who were up early to ensure the pitch passed the morning inspection in what was going to be a tough 90 minutes between two teams who hold no love loss for one another. As you would expect given the conditions and strength of both sides very few chances were created inside the opening quarter as both teams, to their credit, tried to get the ball down and play at any opportunity. The buns were unfortunate not to take the lead after a lung busting break from the colossus, Joe Eason who was unlucky not to break the deadlock and a further chance falling to Seldon whose shot was well blocked on the line. The dracs had two decent chances from set pieces, with a header at the far post and a smart late run from the centre half, who couldn’t convert the corner. The home side had two half chances of their own, both falling to Kai but he couldn’t make the most of them, as both sides headed into HT all square.
Similar to the first half both teams played some neat football as the pitch slowly started to cut up but held out well given the amount of rain we’ve had the past 48 hours. But neither keeper was troubled in the early exchanges. After the Dracs then put the two best chances of the game wide, the buns made their first change with Jamie replacing Seldon, with Aaron heading out to the right wing and what an astute tactical change from the gaffa it would prove. Only minutes later Aaron tore the left back for pace and his cross was met by the chest of Liam Eason and thinking the chance had gone, he pulled out a thunderbolt of half volley into the top corner, 1-0 Buns, Liam adding to his tally of contenders for goal of the season. The Buns were in the ascendance and made two further changes with Wellsy and Dunga taking the field for Kai and Aaron and minutes later the Dracs had the crossbar to thank as Mason, who’s never hit a cleaner strike in his illustrious career. thundering off the bar.
The Dracs continued to push for an equaliser and were unlucky not to get one, as deep into injury time the Buns had Dan to thank for a superb one on one save to keep the clean sheet in tact and much to the delight of the home supporters moments later the final whistle came. To a man again every player put in a monumental shift and I think for the neutral it was safe to say both teams contributed to a highly entertaining 90 minutes of alliance football. A huge thank you to the buns faithful who braved the rain, I think you’ll agree it was a tense but worthwhile affair. We are back in league action next Saturday on the Oval against Caerphilly. #COTB
