The Match Report FAW Trophy Round 3 - Saturday 27th Octber 2018

Penlan Club FC 0 – 2 Ynyshir Albions AFC The buns made the long journey down the M4 today to Swansea Premier high flyers Penlan who were having a great start to the season, undefeated in their domestic campaign. The buns knew that they would have to battle from the outset if they were to have any chance of getting their name into the hat for the fourth round draw. It was Penlan who started the stronger of the two sides looking to get the ball down and play at every opportunity, with midfield runners offering great movement off the ball to help create a number of half chances inside the opening twenty minutes. It was mid way through the first half that the buns started to get some possession but lacked composure at times and squandered good opportunities to get the Penlan back line turned as the final pass was lacking. The buns had Dan Hurton to thank for a smart save and for all of the home side’s possession they lacked, at times, the quality to finish after creating a number of good chances. The buns ended the half well though with Craig Wells, Liam Eason and Stuart Brock all having good half chances as the teams entered the break level at 0-0. The buns had to make a change at HT with Sean Jones replacing the injured Jamie Rewbury, but they knew that the windy conditions would be to their advantage in the second half. The buns started on the front foot and as the tackles started to fly in from both sides it was starting to rattle Penlan.

The home side had their keeper to thank for a superb double save from Brock, after only moments earlier, Wells saw his shot cleared off the line as the buns started to get joy down the right flank with Ceirion Mason’s white boots. A further change early into the half saw Matthew Bishop replace Scott Seldon and only after being on the pitch for a few minutes the buns had him to thank for a superb chested goal line clearance from a Penlan corner The buns were forced into another change as Thomas ‘Dyche’ Jones replaced Liam who had picked up a dead leg. But they soon got their reward. A long ball from Bishop released Wells who held off the center half to see his initial shot saved, only for him to follow up like all good strikers do to send the buns supporters into rapture, 0-1 buns. The home side started to self destruct and allowed the buns’ creative players to get hold of the ball and dominate, the buns were awarded a free kick following a foul on Joe Eason. Up stepped Sean Jones and no don’t worry he didn’t score from the free kick but his superb delivery saw Mason bring the ball down and which allowed skipper Scott Jones to finish from close range, 0-2 buns. There was still plenty of time for Penlan to get back into the game as they continued to press and created a number of good half chances and a great block from Sean Jones at close range helped keep the clean sheet intact, the final whistle came much to the delight of the players and supporters. A huge effort from every single player today and again it showed the character of this squad who in recent weeks have not been at their free flowing best, credit to Penlan as well who they proved to be a very good outfit and we would like to wish them all the best for the rest of the season. Next week we are back on the Oval vs Merthyr Saints at 1:30pm in the second round of the W. John Owen cup and it would be great to see you there. As always a huge thank you to those that braved the artic winds today. Finishing we applaud another personal club landmark. Big congratulations to the Gaffer Craig Wells who made a scoring 200th appearance for the club today. 200 games played, over 100 games in management, 107 goals. Gaffer Leader Legend! #COTB
