Updated 21st August 2018
In a massive first for our club, the 2018/2019 season sees the birth of an Ynyshir Albions youth team. Coached by former Bun, Craig ‘Hoppy’ Hopkins, the boys will play in the South Wales Youth League and will play their home games on Sunday afternoons at Ynyshir Oval
Huge thanks goes out to Gareth Wharton, Dane Williams and all at ‘Planning for Peace of Mind’ for becoming the Youth Team’s home kit sponsor for 2018/2019
Tonight saw the first of three local derby games in a week for the buns as they hosted Trebanog who were themselves having a strong opening start to the season. It was safe to that the game did not disappoint the masses that gathered at the Oval, whilst at times the football was not the most entertaining it certainly had that added edge which we’ve all become accustomed to in games such as this. Both teams started the game well but as you’d imagine there were very few clear cut chances in the opening 20 minutes, with the away side looking to keep the buns deep in their own half and with the buns at times not getting the ball moving as freely as they would have liked through the midfield. The away side were lucky not to be in front were it not for superb last minute tackle from Aaron to advert what seemed a certain goal from close range, this kicked the buns into life with Wellsy continually harrying every ball from the front it helped set the tempo the buns were looking for. The buns got their reward after some neat play out wide which was Brocky go close on the turn to fall to the edge of Joe Eason at the edge of the box who’s left footed shot found its way into the bottom corner 1-0. Further chances before the HT whistle fell to Wellsy & Brocky but credit to Trebanog they continued to work hard to get back into the game and for the second time the home side had Aaron to thank with seconds left in the first half a cross found its way to the unmarked winger on the back post which was superbly blocked from a few yards out again, 1-0 HT. The second half started in similar fashion to the first with both teams struggling at times to get the ball down and play but both sides refused to concede momentum as the tackles started to come thick and fast, Brocky found himself in the book for a late tackle on the goal keeper. The Buns mid way through doubled their lead a cross from a corner was met by the colossus Alex Rees who timed his run to perfection to head home 2-0 buns, Trebanog made a few chances and minutes later should of pulled one back after a mix up at the back saw the strikers shot go wide. Their evening was about to get even tougher after a free kick into the buns box saw Toogie shown a straight red card for an alleged elbow which seemed a harsh call in fairness. The buns made a change with Brocky being replaced by Jamie, who should of scored late on after a neat break down the right flank saw Joe square the ball only for the move to break down. Credit to Trebanog who continued to push on but the buns to a man today headed, blocked everything that they needed to and maybe in years gone by discipline would have been an issue but the players showed tremendous character throughout with some really stand out performances across the park. A huge thank you to both sets of supporters this evening who turned out in great numbers helping to support the club, I’m sure we’ll see the same crowds on the return leg a week today and we wish Trebanog all the best for the rest of the season. Up next another local derby on the Oval this Saturday against Ton & Gelli as always be great to see you there to support the lads in what will no doubt be another tough league fixture. #COTB
