Club History

The Battle for Bragging rights across CF39 CF39 a postcode at the foot of the Rhondda valleys covering Ynyshir & Porth one a village with a population of just over 3,000 the other a town with a population of just under 6,000, however with less than three miles between the two home grounds, its safe their journeys have been somewhat very different. It’s Porth that many would argue are the bigger of the two in footballing terms as well as civic sizing with a long history of competing at Welsh league level. They even had the top flight of the Welsh pyramid in their sights during the 1990s when the league of Wales (now Cymru Premier) was formed winning the Welsh league second division title. Changing their name to AFC Rhondda in 96 in an attempt to grow the club and compete with some of the biggest names in Welsh football.

This was all in vain for the black dragons who reverted back to AFC Porth in 2004. And now for their noisy neighbours the buns being formed in 1992 the same year as the league of Wales and arguably a golden era for Porth. The buns who themselves had a solid spell in the 1990s winning multiple Rhondda league Carol Fry titles and cups with club legend Steve Maylin winning Rhondda Premier league player of the year in the 94/95 season.

Club History

The Battle for Bragging rights across CF39 This success saw the buns knocking on the door of the Welsh league in the early 2000s something our neighbours were well aware of. After missing out on promotion to the Welsh league due to ground regulations and then winning the South Wales senior Cup, the team that came so close gradually disintegrated. Wise old heads hung up their boots and star players left in the case of 2003/04 senior league player of the year Craig Wells he left the red and black of the Oval for the burgundy of Dinas Park. The end of the millenniums first decade saw Ynyshir yo-yoing through the South Wales leagues with Porth dropping out of the Welsh league for a single season before returning the following year. AFC Porth in 2014 saw silverware return with them winning the Nathaniel car sales league Cup only to be followed by relegations in 2015 & 2018. Carol Frythe buns golden era winning the Alliance Two title in 2015/16 and This coincided with what some have called very nearly getting a back to back titles finishing runners up in the Alliance One in 16/17.

Club History

The Battle for Bragging rights across CF39 Despite going so close in their very first year in the Alliance Premier it was to be the following 2018/19 season that the club achieved what some had deemed impossible less than 5-6 years previous, promotion to the Welsh league masterminded by player manager returning hero Craig Wells. It finally meant that the neighbouring clubs would meet for the very first time in a competitive league fixture in the 2019 / 2020 campaign, meaning the team from the town be looking down on their neighbouring village. The stage was set for the first Derby to take place second game of the season on a grey damp Tuesday evening at the home of the buns ‘The Oval’. Over 300 people walked through the gates that day and witnessed a rampant buns brush aside their neighbours in such a manner that anyone with no knowledge of the clubs would have believed the buns were the club with Welsh league history. However it was the season like we’ve never experienced before in which there was to be no return fixture at Carol Fry Dinas park as a few months later the season was rightly abandoned due to the pandemic. But as we look ahead to the latest encounter against our local rivals our objective amongst this group of players & management is simple we want to write our own chapter in buns history and maintain the winning record in of this derby, after years of being in the shadows of our CF39 neighbouring club.

On the 11th Hour, of the 11th Day, of the 11th Month

We Will Remember Them This year as we have for a number years the club will be taking part in the Armistice parade on Ynyshir Road and laying a wreath to show our respect to all those who have served in our armed forces and those who unfortunately are no longer with us. We would like to take the opportunity to show our appreciation and recognise the efforts of one our regulars on match day Mr. Hugh Hughes. Over the last month he’s given up his own time to clean and landscape the cenotaph and its surrounding garden on Ynyshir Road. An ex service man himself this is something that means a lot to Hugh and his efforts haven't gone unnoticed amongst the community after clearing out numerous bags of rubbish and trimming back overgrown trees and plans and replacing them. Carol Fry

From everyone at the club we would like to thank him for all of his effort and continued support.

Club News

The Buns Marathon Men Over the past few months you’ve probably spotted these pair tearing up the roads & hills of the Rhondda Valleys. Joey now referred to by his team mates as ‘The Kenyan’ has covered every inch of road from Ferndale to Maerdy Rez & back, with Alex Rees heading the opposite direction causally sprinting past the traffic towards Pontypridd & Trefforest. Both have put in months of hard work and probably between them own countless Strava records, Alex despite a severe stomach bug on race day, battled through near exhaustion to complete the London marathon in a blistering pace given illness in 3hrs 36mins. Joey headed West last weekend to compete in the Llanelli half marathon and despite the monsoon rains he managed to do so in superb 1hr 32mins finishing in 78th place out of 678.

Carol Fry

From everyone at the club a massive well done to you both, however on the team chat can you post slower times please, Hoppy’s starting to think the rest of us aren't trying or just really slow…..

Club News

Buns Baby Boom We would like to take the opportunity to welcome the two newest arrivals to the buns wider family, on the 26th September Josh & Emily welcomed Sydney Rae Williams into the world weighing 7lbs 14 ounces. She’s already modelling the clubs latest in buns baby merchandise, not to miss out on adding a 3rd member to their family, on the 28th October Zack & Heather welcomed Kiko Philpott weighing 8lbs 12ounces. We have no doubt both will be heading to the Oval over coming weeks to support the lads, from everyone at the club we would like to say a massive congratulations to both families.

Club Photo of the Week

If he’s not busy travelling the globe supporting the national team or sampling a few ales in his famous home made bar, he’s keeping a watchful eye on the hallow ground that so many call home ‘The Oval’. Steve Ward on his morning stroll up in the hills of the Rhondda Valleys couldn’t of timed this any better and captured a great shot just a few hours before the team faced Caldicot in the cup last weekend.
