The Magic of the Cup As we welcome you to the Oval today for this cup quarter final its easy to get excited, as we all know cup competitions is a world of its own where hero's are made and giants defeated. Today may not be a opportunity for a giant killing as both clubs have top spot within their sights in their domestic campaign, it is however a great opportunity for both clubs to take one step closer in adding silver wear to their respective cabinets, with Penydarren knowing all about the magic of the cup. In 2017/18 Penydarren’s promotion to the Welsh league was cause for celebration at the Bont playing field but their Welsh cup exploits made them the darlings of Welsh football with a fairy tail run from the first qualifying round to the quarter final. Victories over Penrhiwceiber Rangers, Brecon Corinthians, Cardiff Corinthians, STM Sports and Llandudno Junction set up mouth watering tie with Pontypridd Town, who at the time were chasing promotion to what is now the JD Cymru south an achievement that Pontypridd managed later on that season. A very grey day in the valleys saw Penydarren book a unlikely place in the quarter finals with a 2-1 win on a pitch that only just survived the match. Their fairy tail came to an end at the quarter final stage, away to eight times Welsh cup Fry winners Bangor City who had started the Carol 2017/18 season in the Europa league qualifying rounds losing to danish side Lyngby Boldklub.
As for today’s fixture it’s the first meeting of the club this season as they are yet to have faced each other in the league and its been a few years since they played against one another and based on previous results the buns will be out for revenge with Penydarren having the better of previous meetings.
Trip down Memory Lane Buns Cup Quarter Finals 2016/17 W. John Owen Cup Quarter Final - Ynyshir Albion's 1-0 Ton Gelli Cup Quarter Final Rhondda derby as Alliance 1 Ynyshir Albion's hosted Ton Gelli of the Alliance Premier. Jamie Rewbury debuted for Ynyshir who won a tight derby through a 2nd half Huw McGregor winner. Dale Pritchard would save a late Ton penalty, denying them extra time. 2000/01 CW. Bruty Cup Quarter Final - Grange Albion 2-3 Ynyshir Albion's A struggling but capable Ynyshir side travelled to much fancied Grange Albion, finding themselves 2-0 down at the break. Byron White, Tom Wilde and Gavin Fry hit back 2nd half for an amazing turn around victory. Ynyshir would go on to lift the cup at the same ground Vs old rivals Sully Sports later in the season. 2004/05 CW Bruty Cup Quarter Final - Ynyshir Albion's 3-4 Cwm Welfare AET Carol Fry
A pulsating game in which Ynyshir came from behind twice, missed a penalty and led 3-2 only for a late equaliser taking the game into extra time. Cwm Welfare would take the lead again and deny Ynyshir another equaliser and penalty shootout at the death with a 2nd penalty save. Simon Griffiths and Damian Roberts (2) the scorers, Roberts twice denied from the spot.

The Long Road to Recovery
Player History – Nathan Applin Nathan Applin who is otherwise referred to by the buns faithful as ‘Appers’ signed for the club back in the 2008/2009 season. A young player who held no fear from the outset, his raw pace and power was matched with a wand of a left foot and a work ethic that would see him give everything come match day for his fellow team mates. His opening season at the club proved to be a very difficult one as the buns were sadly relegated to the South Wales Senior League Two Division. Despite the obvious disappointment this pushed him forward as a player and over the next few seasons, he quickly made a name for himself with superb performances out on the left wing, a position that he made his own. His strong direct nature with the ball at his feet and calmness in front of goal, was seeing him put in displays with an air of maturity beyond his years. In the 2013/2014 season he finished joint top scorer despite only playing 14 games in what was to be a life changing season for him on and off the field. Carol Fry He won numerous personal accolades at the clubs end of season awards with ‘Player of the Year’ and was an integral part of the team that secured promotion back to South Wales Senior League Division One.
To date he’s made over 100+ appearances in the famous ‘Red & Black’ buns shirt scoring 38 goals in the process.
The Long Road to Recovery The Game That Changed My Life
I think for all of us that have played the game we’ve had injuries and set backs that at times have tested our physical and mental resolve, even the most minor at times we exaggerate thinking will I ever play again. In Nathan’s case it hasn’t just been a few weeks, months or even the odd season or two on the side lines for him the home game against Fochriw on the 23rd November 2013 would prove to be life changing and his last competitive outing of football. In a fixture where the two clubs had met numerous times, it was one that everyone was looking forward to. It would prove to be a short affair no sooner had the whistle blew for kick off it was blowing again to stop the match, an absolute horror and spineless tackle from the Fochriw goalkeeper left a 23 year old Nathan rolling in absolute agony and despair. So bad was the tackle that the resultingCarol injury Fry saw the paramedics rush Nathan to a specialist unit in Swansea General hospital for immediate leg saving surgery. The following few years would see him battle through and undergo a staggering 23 operations, from skin graphs, bone re-constructions and infections.
The Long Road to Recovery The Game That Changed My Life So why the sudden look back down memory lane of Nathan’s playing career in todays match day programme, well as mentioned in his early days at the club a young bleached blond haired left winger had a determination and grit not many could match. Therefore once the injury healed or at least became stable enough for him to begin the pain staking rehab programme which proved to test not only his physical but mental fortitude to the absolute maximum. Now fast forward 3,003 days or 8 years 2 months and 20 days, all the management, players and committee are delighted to announce and welcome back Appers, who has secured his place in the match day squad for our Ardal Cup Quarter Final against Penydarren Seniors BGC. Todays fixture not only means so much to the club but it means the absolute world to Nathan personally and his family who will once again head down to the Oval in anticipation ready for kick off to see him take to the field.
We would like to offer a specially warm welcome to Nathans dad, Mr Keith Applin who is fighting his own personal battle with motor neurones, its great to see you back at the Oval today cheering your son on, I’m sure like us all at the club you are super proud.
He’s One of Our Own
To help you get to know the players & committee throughout the season, this week we managed to secure some time with someone who we thought we would never have the pleasure of seeing putting on the buns jersey again, none other than the undefeated left hook / foot wizard…..Mr Nathan Applin.
Name / Age – Nathan Applin (31) Position – Left Wing Favourite Buns Memory – Kai Meades left foot volley to beat local rivals Penrhiwfer Most Intelligent at the Club – Maths magician & genius Sean Jones Future Buns Hall of Famer – King Mason Least Intelligent – Drew Caple Worse Memory in a Buns Shirt – My leg break Best Player you’ve played with – Karl Pugh Worse Dress Sense – Jordan Roberts aka Slugga Longest in the Shower – Alex Rees Hard Man – Rob Kelland Best Trainer – Sean Jones Carol Fry The Joker – Guppy aka Peter Pan Worse Trainer – In fairness the boys put a shift in Best Tekkers – King Mason (20 years) ago though
Club News Sponsorships Renewed Whilst the players and management continue to focus on match day preparation, the buns committee are working tirelessly behind the scenes to continue to push the club forward off the field. We are delighted to announce that the following businesses have decided to renew their sponsorship deals with the club.

Our design team are working hard to make sure that both new & existing boards are ready to be advertised at the Oval, it’s a message that we’ve shared numerous times but as a club we are truly grateful for this support. Without it not just now but in years gone by we simply would not be able to operate as a club and we’d like to think those dark days are over and the buns are now making what was a dream to so many become a reality.
