To help you get to know the players throughout the season and back by popular demand, the buns media team took time out this week to interview two people who for us epitomise everything it takes and means to be a bun, first up none other than GE’s finest pilot, Rhondda’s newest Tiler, the main man Sean Jones aka BPJ. Name / Age – Sean Jones (34) Position – Defender Favourite Buns Memory – My goal against Cefn Cribwr great night at the Oval which put us in the driving seat to secure Welsh League promotion Most Intelligent at the Club – Not may with brains come to think of it, the king got a good head on him but dangerous when he uses it Future Buns Hall of Famer - Scott Jones Least Intelligent – Drew Caple by a mile Worse Memory in a Buns Shirt – Drac’s cup final Best Player you’ve played with – Jamie Rewbury Worse Dress Sense – Huwy Mac Longest in the Shower – The Tank Leon Anstee Hard Man – The Tank & one of the new recruits Crazy Carn Best Trainer – Eason brothers / Scotty J The Joker – Gups & Drew Worse Trainer – So far so good nobody is hiding all the boys are up it, I think they know Hoppy will give them a clip otherwise Best Tekkers – Cory Morgan

Name / Age – Cei Mason (18+VAT) Position – Winger / Forward Favourite Buns Memory – Has to be down Sully getting promoted to the Welsh League Most Intelligent at the Club – Reesy or Huwy Mac got a good head on him Future Buns Hall of Famer - Scott Jones / Sean Jones already in there Least Intelligent – Genuinely don’t know where to start, we’ve gone plenty to choose from this season Worse Memory in a Buns Shirt – There’s been plenty, Lewistown always sticks in my mind about 2012 maybe, went over with 8 players played a 3-2-1-1 diamond ☺ Best Player you’ve played with – Jamie Rewbury Worse Dress Sense – Zacky P loves a touch of illuminous in his tops Longest in the Shower – The Tank Leon Anstee Hard Man – Leon Anstee Best Trainer – The Easons The Joker – Guppy Worse Trainer – Struggling with this one I don’t think anyone slacks off, used to be Rewbs he loved an excuse on a Tuesday Best Tekkers – Cory Morgan

Club History From village field to ground hopping delight The evolution of the Oval and the Bryn Harding stand are as much the evolution of the buns as a club and team as it is the ground, they call home. The spiritual home of football in Ynyshir the Oval has hosted football sports and community events such as fairs and even a circus for the better part of a century. The name is believed to come from the circular circus tents that would be erected on the site decades ago. A various number of teams have existed and made a home in Ynyshir and at the oval Wattstown A.F.C, Ynyshir Rangers F.C, and Ynyshir United F.C. Most recently its residents have been Ynyshir Boys & Girls club from junior all the way to senior side and the buns. The first noticeable modern development came in 2004 when the original Bryn Harding stand was built with the buns missing out on promotion due to a lack of a stand. Unfortunately, this came too late as the side missed out on promotion in the years after its construction but nevertheless it was a valuable addition to the oval. The name itself comes from a former resident of the village who was an avid footballer and supporter of the sport in the community and village. The aforementioned Harding's son's provided valuable financial support to help build the stand a gesture the club still appreciates greatly.

Club History Fast forward a decade and the clubs fortunes were mixed to say the least but the late 2010s proved to be a rejuvenated time for the club. Celebrating their 25th anniversary as a club to gaining Welsh league status and entering the Welsh cup for the first time by 2019/2020 season before Covid struck as one of many obstacles to come the club’s way. To maintain their status at the 3rd tier of Welsh football the club required major development to not only the playing surface but also surrounding facilities, from bigger dugouts a head scratching conundrum to extend the pitch and what would change the visual of the oval the most a 150+ seated stand. The original stand was a brick and steel girder construction with a zinc roof stretching out over the large steps that ran along the dressing room side of the pitch creating a covered terrace. This no longer met the standards required by the Welsh league to compete at the higher level. A ground share with neighbouring AFC Porth was arranged for the 2020/21 season that didn't happen due to Covid-19. This was agreed to enable the club to retain their level within the pyramid and develop the oval though the abandonment of the season created a timetable for work to be done.

Club History During the spring of 2021 after much hard work from committee members and players alike to secure the planning application and self-funding work finally began but it was safe to say it would be a race against time to meet the inspection / approval dates set out by the FAW. Local businesses combined with players and committee members chipped in to do as much work as possible from breaking ground to removing rubble and travelling to West London to secure seats from the now gone Griffin Park Brentford.

The results are a 189-seated covered stand that witnessed its first game as the buns beat Bleanrhondda 7-2 in the FAW Amateur cup first round. A week later over 150 people witnessed the buns beat Cwmbach Royal stars 2-0 in the second qualifying round of the Welsh cup meaning they are in the first round of wales biggest cup competition for the second time in their history, now with a ground worthy of gracing such competitions and a community who continue to embrace and support the hard work of the club.

The Match Report Ardal South West – League Fixture

Penrhiwceiber Ranger 2 - Ynyshir Albions 4 A cracking hard fought result in our 1st game in the 3rd tier of Welsh Football.. Penrhiwceiber champions of the final Welsh League Division 2 before the pyramid restructure are a cracking club and we knew we were in for a rough afternoon. Penrhiwceiber were quicker out the blocks making the stronger start looking to assert themselves from the off. Dale Pritchard made one excellent save to prevent then home side before 15 minutes in it were Ynyshir who took the lead with a stunner of a curled strike from the skipper Scotty Jones. The goal settled Ynyshir who grew into the half and started to gain control. Cory Morgan so nearly made it two rounding the keeper and not getting enough on the finish to beat the covering defender. But it was soon 2-0 on the half hour when Drew Caple's left footed freekick fired home with help from a Ceiber defenders head. Ynyshir were well in control with Carn Thomas and Alex Rees in particular both excellent at the back. Early 2nd half Ynyshir were then awarded a penalty, Cory Morgan brought down and up stepped Scott Jones who fired home for 3-0. But any thoughts of a quiet afternoon were quashed within minutes as Penrhiwceiber hit straight back for 3-1.

The Match Report Ardal South West – League Fixture

Penrhiwceiber Ranger 2 - Ynyshir Albions 4

The game was very competitively fought and now end to end as the home side sensed a fightback but on 70 minutes Ynyshir regained their 3 goal lead when long serving defender Alex Rees bundled home from close range.

At last comfort so it seemed but Ynyshir were guilty of switching off and in an instant it were 4-2, game back on. Credit to Penrhiwceiber who fought at battled right to the end and will be disappointed they didn't test the goalkeeper enough to warrant a share of the points. The day belonged to Ynyshir, a brilliant start and win for the club at yet again a higher level. Credit to Craig Hopkins and the players who continue to work so hard after the long layoff and uncertain pre season. Next up we host West End of Swansea in Ynyshir Ovals 1st Tier 3 game this Tuesday night (7pm kick off). Get down and show your support, be great to see you all back at the Oval.
