Cost: $995 ($350 deposit; call for payment Plan)
Mon-Fri: 9am-5pm (break 12-2pm) Sat: 9am-5pm (break 1-3pm) Sun: 9am-1pm ABOUT DAVID David began practicing yoga at a very early age. His introduction to Ashtanga came in 1973 when he met David Williams and Nancy Gilgoff in Encinitas, California. In 1977 Swenson learned the full Ashtanga system as it was originally taught by K. Pattabhi Jois. David Swenson is recognized today as one of the world’s foremost practitioners and instructors of Ashtanga Yoga.
Don’t miss this opportunity! This 40-hour intensive immersion focuses on the teaching techniques of the Ashtanga Yoga Primary Series. During this seven-day training, you’ll learn safe and effective hands-on adjustments through partner work for all of the asanas, yoga theory, and practicalities of conducting a class. This is a deep immersion into the details underlying the practice and teaching of Ashtanga Yoga. You need not be a teacher, or even desire to be a teacher, to attend. Many students have attended this course to enhance their personal practice. Those who do wish to teach, however, will find a wealth of invaluable tools to share with their students. Participants should have a consistent personal practice of Ashtanga Yoga and understand the flow and sequencing of the asanas. The course is not designed as an avenue to learn the sequence but rather to learn to teach Ashtanga Yoga or to deepen an existing practice. As in all courses run by David Swenson, there is sure to be plenty of laughter and fun woven into the experience. You are sure to learn more than you ever imagined possible in a weeklong course and have a great time in the process.

DAVID SWENSON 6 Facts About a Globe-Trotting Yogi
D
avid Swenson is one of the most in-demand yoga teachers on the planet. In just the past few months, he’s zipped from London to Austria to Hawaii with San Franciso and New Orleans next on the schedule. In August, he’ll be jetting toward the Yoga Center of Minneapolis. Swenson’s popularity isn’t a fluke; his collaborative and good humored teaching style make Ashtanga into a creative practice for his students. In anticipation of his upcoming training, here are seven fun facts about Swenson, beyond his ability to rack up frequent flyer miles: 1. He started yoga at a young age, with a teacher close to home. Swenson notes that he started practicing in 1969 in Houston at age 13, taught by his older brother, Doug. There were no studios, so the pair learned asanas from books and practiced in local parks. Although they appreciated practicing outdoors, people in Texas at the time thought the display was so strange that sometimes they called the police. 2. When Ashtanga came to the U.S., Swenson was in the right place at the right time. Those early experiences prepared him to a more formal introduction to Ashtanga in 1973, when he met David Williams and Nancy
Gilgoff, who brought K. Pattabhi Jois to the United States for the first time. Just four years later, Swenson made his first trip to Mysore to learn the full Ashtanga system as it was originally taught by Jois. 3. He believes yoga can change your approach to life. Swenson says that yoga is a tool for life, because we can’t control some of the daily events in our lives, especially external factors like the economy or weather, but yoga can help us to react differently. When obstacles come, yoga can be a filter that allows us to handle situations in a healthy way. People can use yoga as a tool in a very personal way, from overcoming addiction to creating better focus to athletic training to decreasing stress. 4. He never wanted to teach yoga. Often, Swenson gets asked when to make the transition into being a teacher. The best answer he’s ever heard is: When you have students. But for him, even when people wanted to learn from him, he didn’t see himself as a teacher. He just answered questions and showed asanas when a request would come. Pretty soon, though, all those inquiries turned into a class full of students. So, true to that answer he likes, he began teaching when the students arrived in his life.
philosophy and practice of Ashtanga, teachers in Swenson’s life have been his brother, parents, wife, and even his cat. He believes that if we’re receptive, there are lessons to be learned and examples for life all around us. We need to be open and accepting to learn. 6. In his classes, expect to laugh. Ashtanga is sometimes perceived as a very serious practice, and it’s true that those who follow Ashtanga can display a strong focus in their flow and sequences. But there’s also value to loosening the body through lightness of spirit, and that’s where Swenson excels. Students are drawn to his combination of knowledge, grace, and humor. He notes that the teachers that resonated most with him had the ability to take complex ideas and make them interesting, fun, and tasty. Never heard outbursts of laughter from an Ashtanga class before? Then join Swenson in August for an unforgettable experience. Swenson believes that people should enjoy their yoga, because then they’ll want to keep on that path. Also, let that enjoyment radiate into how you treat others. As Swenson says, “Take the prana and warmth and beauty that we gain from yoga, and then use it in a positive way to make the world a better place.”
5. Teachers are everywhere, he believes. Beyond those who have taught him the

SPLITS: HANUMANASANA Myth of the Monkey One of the most legendary characters in yogic mythology is Hanuman, the Monkey God. He is the inspiration behind the pose, Hanumanasana, more commonly known as the splits. Hanumanasana is a powerful stretch for most of us and symbolizes dedication and the highest potential we can reach.
Hanuman’s Leap to the Sun
His Gift
Long ago lived a young monkey named Hanuman. Like many youngsters, Hanuman was energetic, playful and mischievous. One morning, a sleepy Hanuman rolled out of bed with an insatiable hunger. He looked up to the sky and saw what he thought was a giant mango. This was Hanuman’s favorite fruit, and without another thought, he leaped to the sun to gobble it up for his breakfast. Surya, the Sun God, saw Hanuman coming toward him and was startled. Surya contacted Indra, the God of Thunder, for help. Indra swiftly drew a thunderbolt from his bag and threw it at Hanuman, breaking his jaw and sending him tumbling to the earth.
Hanuman’s parents saw their son falling out of the sky with a broken jaw and were outraged. Surely Indra had overreacted; this was not a suitable punishment for their impulsive child. Hanuman’s father, Vayu, the God of Wind, decided to teach Indra a lesson. He took a deep breath, inhaling all the air in the land, and held it. Indra and Surya realized the severity of Vayu’s revenge–without air to breathe, everyone would die. They rushed to Vayu and begged for forgiveness. As a peace offering, they blessed Hanuman with the gift of immortality, incredible strength, power and endurance. But there was a catch. Hanuman would only remember his power when he was called to something greater than himself. Otherwise, he would remain blissfully unaware of his powers, so he wouldn’t be tempted to act from pride or ego. Vayu agreed and exhaled so everyone in the land would live.

Warm Up Start with five rounds of Surya Namaskar A and B (Sun Salutation A and B). Also practice Warrior 2, Triangle and Standing Splits for up to 30 seconds each on both sides.
Ardha Hanumanasana (Half Monkey Pose) • Begin in a lunge, drop your back knee down (keeping your toes tucked under), and shift your hips over your back knee. • Move your front foot forward 4 to 6 inches, bend your front knee slightly, and flex your foot so your toes point up to the sky. • Press your front heal into your mat and isometrically drag your heal back (this will engage your hamstrings to create a safer stretch). • Inhale, look forward and lengthen your spine. Exhale and fold forward over your front leg. Stay for up to 45 seconds, and switch sides. If it is challenging to touch the floor, try using blocks under your hands.
Beginning the Leap • From Ardha Hanumanasana, extend your front heal forward a few inches, then hug to the midline by isometrically dragging your front heal back and your back knee forward (this will square your hips and help keep you safe). • Walk your front foot forward until you reach your edge. You can also use a block under your front thigh for support.
Hanumanasana (Monkey Pose) • Continue extending your front heal forward, and remember to hug to the midline. Once you have the flexibility, you can lower down to your mat and stretch your arms up to the sky (as pictured on page 29).

health and minimize inflammatory conditions. A deficiency in Omega 6 is rare as American foods contain an abundance of this vital fatty acid.
Just one tablespoon of hemp seed oil is packed with a powerful combination of Omega 3, 6 and 9 fatty acids, making it the perfect alternative to fish oil—perfect for vegetarians or anyone else seeking a balanced, alternative source of omega fatty acids.
• Omega 9 fatty acids are different because they are monounsaturated fats that can be produced by the body–but dietary intake is still necessary. Omega 9 fatty acids help control cholesterol, reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease and stroke. They also keep skin and hair soft and supple.
• Omega 3 polyunsaturated fat is considered an essential fatty acid because it is not produced in our bodies. It is especially crucial for healthy circulation, lowering triglycerides, cell growth, immunity, brain function (including ADHD symptoms) and energy levels.
Hemp seed oil has a green hue from the high amounts of chlorophyll and Vitamin E antioxidants, which protect against free radicals. When applied to the skin, it increases skin elasticity and hydration, making it the ideal moisturizer to cool and calm sunkissed skin.
• Omega 6 polyunsaturated fat, also an essential fatty acid, helps balance hormone levels, maintain bone

YOGA STUDY Karma Yoga Projects The Yoga Center’s Karma Fund helps make yoga available for those in the Twin community. Teacher trainees bring free group classes and privates to groups in the community, offering tools for health and wellbeing. Funds to support these projects (as well as subsidized classes and scholarships at the studio) are raised through general donations from the public and our Friday night donation classes at St. Louis Park. Two recent teacher trainees share their experience with their Karma projects.

special needs including a deaf student and one with a arm that was unable to move. On my second visit I had the opportunity to teach with some students who were new to yoga. The students were open and accepting. They provided feedback that they wanted to move slow so I followed their instructions. I focused on breath and acceptance of where we each are. Meg and Harry, my fellow trainees, did a great job assisting and supporting me, and I was honored to be teaching in an environment where there was great need and appreciation. The class even sent me a thank you for teaching them how to breathe. Thank you for including this in the teaching program!

The karma yoga project at Hazelden was really rewarding. Our groups ranged from four or five to more than ten students on a couple of occasions, and a surprising number of men attended. Hazelden uses a twelve-step approach to recovery from drug and alcohol addiction, which blends well with yoga traditions. Meditation is an important part of their recoveries, so the people who attended our classes were really receptive to the process and liked knowing that yoga is a tool they can use toward improving their own meditation practices. In the end, all the red tape and paperwork was worth it. Director Kellie Lund told me she would welcome us back to teach any time, and that she will be proposing adding a budget for regular onsite yoga classes at the St. Paul facility in the near future.
