When Kegels Aren’t Enough:
Pelvic floor physical therapy provides help and hope for women with incontinence or pelvic pain

The Center for Outpatient Therapy and Wellness at Missouri Baptist Medical Center is a state-of-the-art 8,500+ square feet of space providing an advanced approach to therapy and overall wellness for patients. Physical, occupational, speech and massage therapy are offered five days per week from 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. It has been estimated that one in every three U.S. women has experienced urinary incontinence (UI) and, one in every four, pelvic pain. UI and pelvic pain are conditions caused by dysfunction of the pelvic floor muscles. UI is a condition that affects women of all ages. Many experience UI in menopause, but it can affect teenagers, too. UI can occur in new mothers and even in fit, young, athletes (especially runners). Any activity that causes an increase in abdominal pressure can trigger UI, such as repetitive and intensive exercise, obesity and chronic constipation. Contrary to popular belief, these conditions are not something “you just have to live with.” There are treatment options for pelvic floor dysfunction, including physical therapy. The pelvic floor muscles are the muscles used to stop the flow of urine when going to the bathroom. Like any other muscle of the body, these 20

muscles can be weak or not function properly. Pelvic floor muscles can be strengthened with pelvic floor (Kegel) exercises and other physical therapy treatment. When the muscles are not functioning properly, incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse, or pelvic pain, can occur. If you leak urine when you laugh, cough, sneeze, or exercise, you have experienced UI. When you begin to avoid social activities and relationships due to fear of incontinence or pelvic pain, you have lost the freedom to live your life. When you visit the newly redesigned Breast HealthCare Center at Missouri Baptist, you'll find a warm and inviting place. Here, you'll experience a level of comfort not usually associated with advanced breast imaging centers. You'll be treated by some of the region's most experienced physicians, nurses and technologists — specially-trained in breast health. In an effort to educate women of their risk factors, women in Missouri are being informed of their breast tissue density after having a screening mammogram. Screening facilities, like the Breast HealthCare Center at Missouri Baptist Medical Center have been sending this information along to their patients since January 2015. Having dense breast tissue is a relatively common condition. The breast tissue density letters are not designed to provide women undue concern, but to raise awareness so women know their personal tissue density. Dense breast tissue makes it more difficult to see abnormalities, if any exist. If a woman has dense tissue, and if she has other identified risk factors for breast cancer, she might benefit from supplemental screening tests to rule out any breast problems. So, what should you do if you learn you have dense breast tissue?
Discuss the presence of any risk factors, including dense breast tissue, with your physician, who can determine if you need further testing. 3D mammography is a new technology that may be particularly beneficial for women who have dense breasts. Doctors can use it to examine breast tissue layer by layer, looking for any signs of cancer. 3D mammograms provide images with improved resolution and visualization. Finding cancers in the earliest stages increases one’s chances of survival. 3D helps doctors find smaller cancers sooner — especially in dense breast tissue.
