Optimize Your Most Important Asset. Your Health! It’s been a terrific two months at Y&S! On January 26th, Y&S hosted our 10th Annual Living Fit Expo! The event was an amazing day of fun, interactive activities, over-the-top vendor exhibits and thought-provoking speakers. Thank You to our Health & Wellness community of sponsors, advertisers, readers and followers who added to the excitement of the day and ultimately made the 10th Annual Living Fit Expo a big hit! I’m grateful to those of you that took the time to say hello and share your appreciation for Y&S magazine. Meeting you was a blessing and a great way to start off the New Year! February is always buzzing with frenetic energy at Y&S as the short month leaves little time to get ready for press. But after it’s done, I get a chance to sit, write my publisher letter and reflect with gratitude on all the people that came together to make it happen. We have a great team here at Yoga & Spa magazine, and they rocked over the last two months. Our team is growing! You will notice two new names in this publication, Shannon Hayes Buescher and Valerie Carr. Shannon Hayes Buescher is an Intuitive Eating Counselor with over 15 years of experience helping people heal from the diet culture. Valerie Carr is a functional nutrition and wellness coach who helps women understand and overcome self-sabotage. In addition to building the magazine, Y&S has the honor of hosting the 2019 Health & Wellness Fair at the Missouri Athletic Club on March 9th. “Our goal is to raise the bar for Missouri’s health profile by promoting awareness and showcasing the many ways individuals can take personal responsibility for their health and wellbeing.” Join us on March 9th and Optimize your most important asset. Your Health! Lastly, a big shout to my nephew Trevor and his beautiful wife Krissy, who gave birth to a baby girl on February 23rd and named her, none other than, Marguerite! What an honor and a fantastic way to close out a terrific two months!!! I hope you love the March/April issue as much as we have loved making it for you. Enjoy!

Eleven Chiropractic Fun Facts 1. The term “chiropractic” is a combination of two Grecian words:

cheir which means hand, and praktos which means done, coming together to mean “Done by Hand”. Fitting, right? 2. The first chiropractic adjustment was given in 1895 by Daniel

David Palmer (the father of Chiropractic!) who helped a janitor, Harvey Lillard, regain his hearing after a neck injury he suffered 17 years prior. 3. Doctors of Chiropractic (DCs) go through a minimum of 4,200

hours of classroom, lab and clinical internships during their 4-year doctoral graduate school program. Perspective: If you combine all that time, that’s 175 days straight. 4. It is estimated that Doctors of Chiropractic (DCs) treat over 35

million Americans (adults and children) annually. 5. There are about 95,000 doctors of chiropractic in active practice

across the globe, and about 10,000 students are currently enrolled in chiropractic education programs in the United States alone. 6. 32 National Football League teams utilize chiropractic services!

All 32 teams have their own chiropractor to boost performance, maintain wellness, and treat musculoskeletal strain and injury. 7. Unbeknownst to quite a few, infants can benefit greatly from

chiropractic care. It makes sense—birth can be pretty hard on a little body! The adjustment is adapted to suit their needs and is perfectly safe. 8. Each day, over one million adjustments take place across the globe.

That’s a whole lot of healing! 9. Chiropractic is recognized and regulated by law in over 40

countries! And in the United States, D.Cs are licensed in all 50 of them! 10. An injured worker is 28 times less likely to have spinal surgery if

the first point of contact is a Doctor of Chiropractic (DC), rather than a surgeon. 11. Treatment for low back pain (a common symptom treated by

chiropractic care) initiated by a DC costs up to 20 percent less than when started by a MD. Dr. Nick Barnes is on a mission to transform the way his patients view and manage their health in order to prevent and reverse sickness and disease so that they can live to their God- given potential without the use of drugs or surgery! Anticipation is growing for the 2019 St. Louis Earth Day Festival. This will be the most spectacular year yet, as it is the 30th anniversary celebrating in St. Louis! The Festival will take place on the Muny grounds in Forest Park on April 27th and 28th, from 11 am to 5 pm. This event is dog-friendly, so don’t forget to bring your fur baby. This two-day event has attracted over 62,000 attendees, with 250 vendors, local musical acts, Green Dining Alliance-certified Foods Trucks and booths, and hands-on activities for the kids. It is a fun opportunity for you and your family to celebrate Earth Day in St. Louis’s breathtaking Forest Park. You’re even invited to enjoy free yoga where you can center your body and mind.

Attendees are also encouraged to participate in the Earth Day Challenge, which is comprised of three parts: 1. Always carry a reusable bag and a refillable water bottle with you to avoid using disposables. 2. Use alternative transportation as often as possible. 3. Incorporate more plant-based meals into your diet. Those who visit the Earth Day Challenge booth and show that they have completed at least two of the three components for the weekend will be able to select a prize of their choice. Earthday365 encourages you to incorporate these three steps into your daily lifestyle, as they can drastically reduce your personal impact on the environment.

St. Louis Earth Day Festival is hosted by the environmental non-profit earthday 365, previously known a St. Louis Earth Day. Throughout the year you will see their two programs, Green Dining Alliance and Recycling on the Go, promoting sustainability around town. During the month of April enjoy the St. Louis Earth Day Film Series and annual Recycling Extravaganza. Earthday365 takes pride in their determined inevitability to empower communities to create and celebrate a greener St. Louis every day. For more information on the Festival, either program or any other earthday 365 events, visit the website www.earthday-365.org.

LED Light Therapy and HydraFacials: Do They Really Work? By Jayme Hanna

I believe so strongly in the power of these treatments that I offer both the HydraFacial and LED light therapy in my own spa. You’ve probably heard some skincare buzz lately around LED light therapy and HydraFacials®. But you might be asking yourself, “What are they?” and “Do they live up to their hype?” Let’s start with HydraFacial. Did you know, every 15-seconds a Hydrafacial is given around the world? Crazy, right? This unique treatment is a non-invasive skin resurfacing solution that delivers instant results with no downtime. Using Vortex-Fusion® technology through a medical-grade hydra-dermabrasion device, it provides immediately clearer skin that glows. Not only does it clean, but it exfoliates, removes dirt from pores with a painless suction, and nourishes with intense moisturizers and antioxidants. Within the first session, the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles diminishes, acne reduces, the appearance of dark spots and sun spots minimizes, and skin tone evenness and texture corrects. Did I mention it’s painless? It can also provide detoxification through mechanical lymphatic therapy. Lymphatic therapy works to improve circulation, as well as detoxify, tone, and firm skin. Gentle lymphatic massage can stimulate the opening of the lymphatic system, increase lymph flow, and assist in the drainage of stagnant cellular fluid and released toxins. With the elimination of toxins, the skin

achieves balance resulting in a clearer complexion and improved skin tone and color.

I also enhance the treatments

LED Light Therapy can seem almost straight from a space-age movie, and maybe rightfully so, as this skincare treatment was taken from NASA research. Light Emitting Diode (LED) phototherapy is the application of blue, red and near-infrared light energy to tissue for therapeutic benefits. This energy is used to improve cellular performance and is known for its healing and antiinflammatory properties. It has a variety of applications across many medical fields due to research that shows it can increase circulation, accelerate tissue repair, decrease wrinkles, decrease inflammation, improve skin tone and wrinkles, texture and clarity, ease muscle and joint pain, stiffness and arthritis, and kill acne bacteria.

connection. As an integrative

During a LED Light Therapy, you will have a light mask placed over your skin for 15-30 minutes that cycles through the light energies. Results are not as immediate as a HydraFacial, but provide a deeper cellular treatment with deep tissue repair. However, the great thing is LED therapy can be performed as an individual treatment, or in combination with your HydraFacial.

Energy-Conscious Windows from Renewal by Andersen®

Consumers are becoming more educated about environmental matters. A 2016 Pew Research Center survey among American adults showed that 75 percent are particularly concerned about helping the environment as they go about their daily lives. And when it comes to the home, that concern is reflected in the products homeowners select. They are increasingly searching for products that will help them lower utility costs while reducing their carbon footprint.

Committed to Energy Efficiency The right windows make a substantial difference in a home’s energy efficiency. According to energystar.gov, using ENERGY STAR®-certified windows can help homeowners reduce energy bills – and carbon footprints – by an average of 12 percent nationwide. Andersen Corporation has been an ENERGY STAR partner since the program’s inception in 1998, and in 2018, was presented with the ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year-Sustained Excellence Award by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy. The award recognizes Andersen’s initiative in protecting the environment through superior energy efficiency.

At Renewal by Andersen of St. Louis, we share this commitment to being responsible stewards of our environment. We install products from Renewal by Andersen®, the replacement window division of Andersen Corporation, which produces a wide variety of replacement windows and patio doors that meet or exceed ENERGY STAR performance standards. Advanced technology in manufacturing has led to superior glass and framing materials that, when combined with professional installation, give homeowners optimal energy efficiency and beautiful windows that will last for decades.

Save Energy, Increase Comfort Andersen’s latest development is SmartSun™ Glass with HeatLock® Technology, the most energy-efficient glass we have ever offered. This new glass option provides near triple-pane performance in a dual-pane window. SmartSun Glass gives you the benefits of Low-E glass, plus it keeps your home more comfortable by regulating the temperature while still letting sunlight shine through. The HeatLock coating reflects heat that likes to escape your home in winter, while also reflecting exterior heat that makes your home

hot in summer. HeatLock coating was specifically designed to meet the more stringent ENERGY STAR® requirements for windows in the Northern Zone.

Stop Interior Fading In addition to energy savings, another benefit of SmartSun Glass with HeatLock Technology is that it filters out 95 percent of harmful ultraviolet rays. Ultraviolet rays are a leading cause of interior fading. SmartSun Glass helps protect your furnishings from the damaging glare of the sun, so your furniture, curtains, carpets and artwork stay beautiful for years to come. If you’re ready to reduce your energy bills and become more environmentally conscious, look no further than replacement windows and doors from Renewal by Andersen of St. Louis. Our products will keep your home cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter, all while keeping down the cost of heating and cooling. Our knowledgeable staff is ready and waiting to help you.

Using Tibetan Singing Bowls in Therapy Sessions by Sheila Hunt

Patients at The Changing Pointe Addiction Treatment Center are learning new ways to achieve deep relaxation and a sense of well-being. Therapist, Steve Brunk, MA, LPC, leads mindfulness groups using Tibetan Singing Bowls, which reduce stress and anxiety and create a state of quiet consciousness.

Science has confirmed that sound can directly affect mood, brain waves, the nervous system and body chemistry. The vibrations of singing bowls stimulate the body to help produce the alpha waves that are present in the brain in deep relaxation. Singing bowls, also called healing bowls, can be traced back to Asia as early as 2000 B.C. They are made of an alloy of 7 different precious metals, creating a range of different sounds and overtones.

Sound from Tibetan Singing Bowls trains the brain to move into Theta brainwave frequencies that induce deep meditative and peaceful states and clarity of mind. The sound vibrations impact our nervous system, engaging our relaxation reflex and inhibiting the stress or pain response.

✸ Reduce stress and anxiety significantly

The benefits of singing bowls are immense and have been used to achieve the following treatment goals: ✸ Lower anger and blood pressure ✸ Improve circulation and increase blood flow ✸ Deep relaxation ✸ Increase mental and emotional clarity ✸ Promote stillness, happiness and well-being ✸ Stimulate the immune system ✸ Aid the immune system and fibromyalgia and psoriasis in individuals that meditate ✸ Decrease the intensity of pain

24 - YogaandSpaMagazine.com | MARCH/APRIL 2019

Playing the bowls usually causes an immediate centering effect. The tones set up a “frequency following response” that creates a balancing left/right brain synchronization. Meditating on the subtle sounds of the Tibetan Singing Bowl tunes one into the universal sound within and without. There are many ways to play the Tibetan Singing Bowls, depending on the sound or feeling you are trying to achieve. If your goal is to have the sound lead you into a quiet state of consciousness, generally the best way to play the bowl is to tap it with a mallet. Concentrating on the bowl, especially the pulses of sound as they become quieter and quieter, is an excellent way to bring the mind into focus. While the entire bowl moves from being struck, the sound radiates from the rim. Rim play provides a wonderful and often concentrated sound by rubbing a mallet around the outside of the rim. Brunk explains, “The idea is to ring it frequently so you hear the bowl again and again. Over time, the unique soundscape will find a place in your memory. You can use this imprint as a fast way to access the good feeling that is associated with the Tibetan Singing Bowl.” For more information about addiction treatment contact CenterPointe Hospital at 800-345-5407.

An Interview with Carol Anderson, Owner of Nouveau, a Boutique Med Spa

Carol Anderson - Owner/RN/CANS Carol is the owner of Nouveau Medspa in Kirkwood, MO. She is also a Board Certified Registered Nurse with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and is the first RN in Missouri to become a Certified Aesthetic Nurse Specialist.

“The goal of Nouveau is to develop a Personal Treatment Plan to utilize bio-stimulator modalities to encourage your body to repair and correct itself.” Y&S: So, let’s go back to your beginnings. Where did you grow up? Carol Anderson: My roots go back to my family’s 100 year

played, went to school and church together. An abundance of fresh fruits, vegetables, and fresh unadulterated animal products, as well as everyday outdoor activity, fueled strong bodies.

farm in the Missouri River Valley between New Haven and Hermann, Missouri.

Y&S: W here did you go from there?

Y&S: What was it like growing up in the Missouri River Valley?

which evolved over time out of a natural instinct to nurture. As a child I was often found caring for small and sometimes compromised baby farm animals.. The wonder of science and humanitarianism drew me into nursing.

Carol Anderson: I had the fortune of being raised by a community. It was a place where generations of families worked,

26 - YogaandSpaMagazine.com | MARCH/APRIL 2019

Carol: University of Missouri-Columbia—Nursing was a choice

Y&S: What led you from being an RN to the owner of Nouveau? Carol: Nursing was never a job, but a profession regarding the science of well-being and the compromise of one’s state of being. I have not transitioned from nursing to Nouveau, but rather am the RN/Owner of Nouveau. Over the first 25 years of nursing, my career spanned from neonatal to aging inhome nursing, patient care to hospital administration, hospital consulting and Disease management. Nursing led me on a multi-faceted path privileged to have been influenced by the diversity of thought and practice. After ten years of working with a Plastic Surgeon, I became the first RN in Missouri to be a Certified Aesthetic Nurse Specialist. In April 2016, I opened Nouveau with the goal of being the regenerative face of beauty, granting women and men permission to age with grace, dignity, strength, and beauty.

Y&S: I had the privilege of hearing you speak at the Living Fit Expo. You seem energized and passionate to share your expertise. What energizes you? Carol: My passion and enthusiasm springs from being authentic consistently across life, personally and professionally. When I work with clients, I share my true experiences with and knowledge about aging and help the client find their own source of grace to wear aging beautifully and with resilience. Our professionals are a source of “truth in aging” and “truth in the science of market trends”. We discourage “what is the most popular treatment of the day” and encourage the best treatment. We believe in using multiple modalities and a planned regimen of treatments to accommodate consistent correction and prevention.

Y&S: What’s the most popular treatment you provide at Nouveau? Carol: “Remember and rebuild” is my favorite strategy. Actually, my favorite part is the consultation. This is my opportunity to get acquainted with your face, skin, and goals, identify natural sources of beauty, and what is causing the interruption. Then, we talk about how to prevent or correct concerns. The goal of Nouveau is to develop a personal plan to utilize bio-stimulator modalities to encourage your body to repair and correct itself. PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) is an autologous (from you – for you) treatment utilizing your own blood to derive concentrated platelets and re-inject them strategically for correction. PRP can be injected to create volume, correct fine lines and wrinkles, reduce acne scarring, and stimulate hair restoration. During the 11 years I have administered PRP cosmetically, I observed PRP

to lay a great foundation. That foundation of PRP will enhance the response of the face, body, and skin to most treatments. Injecting PRP 1-4 times each year could be considered your own ”internal fountain of youth”. Other treatment modalities which signal your body to auto-correct are Sculptra Aesthetic, Forever Young BBL and Infini (fractionated radio frequency).

Y&S: If you had a crystal ball, what would you see as the future of your industry? Carol: Aging begins at birth and is the passage of time. How we spend that time and care for our body, mind, and spirit determines the quality of that passage. We are part of a movement toward restorative and regenerative medicine, toward cultivating and managing a functionally youthful state — how we feel, live, and look. The specific field of Aesthetic Medicine will grow as more people become aware of the affordable possibilities. The age of people seeking treatment is broadening as a younger population embraces prevention. One is never too old to make corrective youthful changes and never too young to practice preventive anti-aging self-care. Nouveau will continue to be your source of “truth in aging” and “truth in the science of market trends.” Our future is you.

Shape Up for Spring

by Jenny Baker

Spring is just around the corner which means it’s time to refresh, rejuvenate and get back to feeling your best! Shake off those winter blues and spring forward into a new season of endless opportunity. When we think of spring we think of new growth and fresh starts. The same goes for your health! A healthy body starts with nutrition, water and physical exercise. Whether you’re trying to tone and strengthen muscle, or you’re just working on having healthier habits, take advantage of the spring season to get back on track. Try this asana sequence to feel more grounded and shape up for spring.

Chair Pose

Mountain Pose

Slowly rise back up to mountain pose. Feel your feet grounded back in the mat and sit down in your imaginary chair. Feel your abdominals working as you maintain consistent deep belly breathing. You’ll feel your muscles tightening to maintain the pose while increasing leg and core strength. In addition, this pose will open your chest and shoulders allowing you to embrace the newness of the spring season.

Begin the new season by rooting your feet into the ground like a tree in tadasana. Allow your mountain pose to be firm, stable, and gentle. Relax your shoulders while keeping your spine straight and upright. Take multiple deep breaths while you’re here. This pose will make you feel powerful and strong while increasing mobility in your feet, legs, and hips.

Standing Forward Bend

Revolved Chair

From mountain pose, slowly fold forward while keeping your back flat. If you feel tightness arising in your legs, give your knees a slight bend to send some relief to the hamstrings. You’ll feel a gentle stretch in your low back while your arms dangle loosely in front of you.

Photos by Erin Gregory

Incorporate this asana sequence into your practice this spring and cleanse your body from the long winter’s rest. You’ll be on your way to a healthier and fitter you during the spring equinox. Shift your chair pose over to one side by bringing your hands into prayer position and move your left elbow on top of your right knee. Remain in the twist with even, steady slow breaths. Don’t forget to keep your body balanced and work both your right and left sides. When you’re ready, take your revolved chair pose to your opposite side for optimal stretching. Twisting allows detoxification of the organs and will help your body feel cleansed and renewed.

Alignment Basics: Chaturanga by Kellie Mathes

The physical foundation of yoga poses achieve proper alignment from the action in your Hands, Feet and Core. This is true in almost every pose. Here, we’ll explore Hands, Feet and Core action in plank and Chaturanga, as well as the transition between the two asanas. To set up into Plank Pose, start out belly down on your mat. Place your hands under your shoulders and spread your fingers wide. Tuck your toes under your feet. Pull your low abdominal muscles toward your spine. Press the backs of your knuckles firmly into the mat to lift your whole body up. It is the pressing down into your mat, that creates lift. Set your eye gaze about 18-24 beyond the top of your yoga mat. From skin to muscle to bone, hug your body toward its centerline. Balance your weight between your hands and the ball mounds of your feet, while pulling the low abdominal muscles in and up toward your spine.

Plank transition to Chaturanga With your eye gaze forward, bend your elbows so they are pointing directly behind you and shift the weight from the ball mounds of the feet to the backs of the toes. Pull the low belly in and up toward the spine and slide your shoulders away from your ears. Hug the leg muscles in toward the bones. Stop lowering when the elbows are in line with the rib cage and the whole body is level to the earth. Maintain level hips and shoulders as you bend your elbows to point behind you.

Some common misalignments and how to avoid them One of the most common misalignment happens when we release the core and the hips either dip toward the mat or up toward the ceiling while our chest dives down toward the mat. Keep the core engaged by pulling the low belly in and up toward the spine. Another common misalignment to avoid is driving the shoulders up toward the ears. Instead, squeeze the shoulder blades back and around the spine, while spreading the fingers wide.

WELLNESS

The Health Benefits of CBD Oil (or Cannabidiol) by Katie Thomas

We have eleven systems within our body that most people are aware of, for example, the digestive system, respiratory system, and nervous system to name a few. We also have a twelfth system that probably wasn’t mentioned in high school science class, called the Endocannabinoid system (ECS). It’s primary function is creating homeostasis (balance) that works with all the other systems within the body.

CB1 and CB2 are endocannabinoid receptors that are produced naturally within the body. Ideally these endocannabinoids circulate within the body when needed to keep the body functioning at its best. Phytocannabinoids are derived from plants such as hemp or echinacea that can interact and affect CB1 and CB2 receptors and, in turn, the Endocannabinoid system.

The Endocannabinoid system (ECS) supports the body’s natural responses to pain, stress, anxiety, and many other issues. It is comprised of receptors that lie within the body: the brain, organs, connective tissues, and glands. These receptors are CB1 (found mostly in the brain and the central nervous system) and CB2 (found primarily in the immune system and even found on white blood cells).

Cannabidiol (CBD) and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) are the two most abundant phytocannabinoid rich compounds found naturally in hemp. THC is responsible for the “high” feeling. CBD will not get you high but does have incredible health benefits. Research has shown that CBD can trigger the body to build more endocannabinoid receptors throughout the nervous system and immune system to create homeostasis. CBD acts like the key that unlocks the receptors in the body.

32 - YogaandSpaMagazine.com | MARCH/APRIL 2019

PTSD, epilepsy, and IBS are now classified as “clinical endocannabinoid deficiencies.” CBD products give us the opportunity to ‘activate’ the Endocannabinoid system organically to produce more cannabinoids. If we support the production of endocannabinoids in our body with phytocannabinoids and eat in ways that help to nourish the receptors, your body has the potential to bring back a state of vibrant health. The Endocannabinoid system plays a large role in our body’s balance and can be nourished through phytocannabinoid rich products and certain foods. The Shoulder and Neck Pain Connection After 26 years in practice, there is one thing I am sure of: the way your body reports pain is unreliable. What do I mean by this? I have seen many patients that have come in complaining of shoulder pain and it’s not a shoulder problem, just like neck pain may not be a neck problem. Neck and shoulder pain so commonly overlap that some refer to it as “Schneck Pain”. The issue I most often see is a patient with shoulder pain that refers from the neck. This is due to the multiple nerve pathways that connect the two. The three common causes for either issue are trauma, repetitive stress, and poor posture. Forward head posture with a rounded upper back and rolled shoulders is the most common cause.

You may have arthritis or nerve-related neck pain if it:

When the Shoulder is the Problem

•R elieved when you support your neck

Injury to the rotator cuff, a group of muscles and tendons that stabilize the joint, is most often the cause of shoulder pain. The following may indicate you have a rotator cuff injury or other shoulder problem. The Pain: • Is Dull and aching • Develops in the shoulder itself or on the outside of the upper arm • Occurs when you reach overhead or behind your back or when lifting • Persists at night • Improves when you rest your arm • Radiates into the upper arm, but not past the elbow

When the Neck is the Problem The lower three pairs of the nerves of the neck supply the muscles of the shoulder and upper back.

• I s Electric-like, stabbing, burning or tingling •R adiates to the shoulder blade, or close to or on the side of your neck •R adiates down past your elbow or into your hand •P ersists at rest

•R adiates down your arm when you extend or twist your neck It is crucial to see a specialist to determine where the pain is coming from so the proper treatment can be determined. If posture correction is not part of your treatment protocol, neck and/or shoulder pain may become a chronic issue.

5 Important Pet Tips for Spring Spring is here! The warmer weather means that you and your pets will be spending more time outside. Maybe you’ll start taking those long evening walks again or heading to the dog park on the weekends. You may even start hiking through your local preserve or parks. Or, you two may simply hang out in the backyard and play some fetch. Your cat will probably start sitting in the windowsills again or want to take strolls out in the yard (if she/he’s indoor/outdoor), or just simply lay in that sun that streams through your windows. Whatever you do with your furry friends, here’s how to make sure that they are ready for spring.

5 Important Pet Tips for Spring: 1. Brush your cat – A thorough brushing a few times a week will go a long way to curb shedding around the house and cut down on the chance of a gross hairball on your floor. Cats with long coats may need a de-matting tool as well. If your cat tolerates it, you

may even try a bath to help remove the dead fur, condition their skin, and clean off any debris. Just remember, make sure to dry them well, and if your cat won’t tolerate the water, don’t push it.

2. Houseplants – Cats and dogs sometimes chew or nibble plants. Some cats dig in the pots and toss dirt everywhere. If you have pets that think the plants are their “tiny” garden, consider hanging plants or moving them where your pets can’t access them. If the plants you have are poisonous and can make your pet ill, see if your friends want them and replace them with safer species.

3. Cleaning chemicals – As you begin spring cleaning the house, garage, and attic, be mindful of the cleaners you have in your house. Some may leave a residue behind that can harm your pets. Check the labels and keep your pets away from the newly mopped and cleaned rooms till everything is completely dry and the chemicals used are put away.

4. Safety First – When removing the insulation from the windows, check the screens for holes and tears. A cat may lean against the screen and end up outside. You also don’t want flies and other bugs getting into your house. Repair any weak spots in your windows and if your cat loves to perch on the windowsill, think about getting a cat tree with multi shelves that can be placed near the window or a cat shelf that is like a hammock for cats.

5. Pesticides – If you use some pesticides in the house and in your yard, check the labels and think about changing brands to safer ones for the environment and your pets and children. Some types are fatal if your pet ingests them and others may cause extreme sickness. There are green ways to keep pests at bay such as using peppermint oil to repel ants and citronella to repel mosquitos. From www.petswelcome.com

Helps You Live Better and Healthier at Any Age

Interview with Mike Baue, Co-Owner of OsteoStrong O’Fallon By Diane Kline Y&S - What made you decide to bring OsteoStrong to St. Charles County? Mike Baue - My wife Christine and I

were invited to Laura and Johnny Harper’s Grand Opening (OsteoStrong Creve Coeur) in July of 2016 and were intrigued by the technology. As I approached age 50, my knees, hips, and back were beginning to ache, and OsteoStrong made sense as a solution. Christine became a member in Creve Coeur and we saw an immediate transformation in her strength, balance, and agility. We knew this would be a huge impact on the health of our family and community.

Y&S - Fantastic! How does OsteoStrong actually work? MB - We’ve known for well over a hundred years that they way to strengthen your skeletal system is by applying pressure, and in 2012 a group of researchers determined the amount that’s required to stimulate bone density growth. OsteoStrong uses this research and worldclass technology. In one simple pain and sweat free session each week, our system gives members the benefit of high impact force without the risk of high impact activity. Certified Strength Coaches lead members through a series of four Robotic Musculoskeletal Strengthening Devices designed to increase skeletal strength, which impacts the entire body. In just ten minutes, once a week, these sessions help our members get stronger bones, stronger muscles, improve balance and agility, and greater athletic performance.

Y&S - Can a ten-minute session really make a difference? MB - Absolutely! Not only do they feel

the benefits, but we track each member’s gains with every session. The Biofeedback on each machine measures strength gains, and members monitoring their bone density with their doctor often see increases over time. One of our greatest joys is when a member comes in and shares how their life has improved because they joined OsteoStrong. Many members have reduced or completely eliminated joint and back pain. Some start playing sports again, and some have completely reversed their osteoporosis. The great thing about OsteoStrong is that it works for almost anyone at any age, body style, or physical condition.

Y&S - This sounds a like a gym. Is it a workout? MB - OsteoStrong is nothing like a gym.

Skeletal Strength Conditioning doesn’t require sweat or pain. Clinical research is clear that strengthening your bones requires something completely different. OsteoStrong’s Spectrum System is designed to allow members the ability to harness their bodies’ natural adaptive responses by using their own strength in a comfortable and fun environment. When a member uses our system, they can strengthen their entire musculoskeletal system at a cellular level in a quick once-a-week session. That’s what sets us apart.

Y&S - So, who should come to OsteoStrong? MB - That’s easy. Anyone who wants to

take their physical performance to the next level. This includes everyone from highly conditioned athletes, all the way across the spectrum to highly deconditioned elderly. Most people want more strength, less pain, greater performance, or some other benefit of skeletal strengthening. We have members from 11 to 90 years old, and they all benefit from the same system once a week. We’re making a difference, and it’s amazing to see new centers opening around the St. Louis area, and around the world!

Y&S - Great! How does someone get started? MB - Call us! The best way to experience

OsteoStrong is to try it yourself. Each location offers a no obligation, no cost trial. Your skeletal system is your foundation. If you have strong bones, you can have a strong body. This is arguably the most profound system for human physical development in decades. What would your life be like if you had a strong foundation? The Secret Weapon to Dieting:

Intuitive Eating

Did you know that a $60 billion industry has you convinced that you need the latest meal plan, workout, powder, or pill? This industry that has preyed on you to feel that your body will never be good enough has stolen so much more than just your money. The diet industry has taken countless hours away from you, which you spent obsessing over food, calories or points. It has stolen your trust, intuition, respect and appreciation for your body. Diets have been proven, study after to study, to NOT work. Research has shown that any weight loss that is achieved on a diet will be regained, along with an additional 5-10 pounds (or more) within 1- 5 years. But that’s not all, every time you diet, you are lowering your metabolism. Therefore, weight becomes harder and harder to lose and you find yourself resorting to stricter and more depriving diets, only to be met with weight gain once again. What if I told you that you were not the failure? The diet was. What if I told you that you could throw “willpower with food” out the window? What if there was an approach to food that you could eat what your body wanted, and you could stop eating when you felt satisfied? The answer? Intuitive Eating. Intuitive Eating, created and written by Evelyn Tribole and Elyse Resch, is an evidenced-based, anti-diet approach to food. Intuitive Eating is a process of reconnecting to your body and using your body as the guide for eating. The principles of Intuitive Eating help you to examine your relationship with food and your body. This relationship has often been damaged from years of dieting and living in the strong diet culture that we are in. You are taught to disconnect from your body, to follow what the plan says, not what your body says.

As you work through the process of Intuitive Eating, you look at how diet rules have impacted your relationship with food. You become aware of how connected you are to the cues of hunger, fullness, and the importance of satiation. You pay attention to how certain foods make your body feel. You listen to what activities energize and rejuvenate you, rather than deplete or punish you for last night’s meal. You look at how well you are respecting your body. You examine why you use food to numb your feelings. You find the ways that you’ve needed to care for yourself that were missing. You find permission in place of deprivation. You find kindness and peace where there once was war. Intuition with your body is something that has always been there. We are born with it. Finding your way back to that trust and self-reliance with food can be a scary, messy journey. But it is one worth taking to discover that you, in fact, are the expert of your own body, not anyone else. Shannon Hayes Buescher, MS, RD, LD, has over 15 years of experience working with people to help heal their relationship with food and their body. She is a certified Intuitive Eating Counselor who is passionate in helping people heal from the diet culture. She has a private practice, located in Chesterfield and offers individual or virtual sessions, as well as online Intuitive Eating groups. Visit her website at www.hayesnutrition.com

HEART& SOUL

Why Did I Just Do That?

Understanding the Power of Sabotage

Sabotage can seem to come out of nowhere and most often right when we are beginning to realize success and reach our goals. Recognizing how sabotage and its defeating ways appear in our lives is essential to stopping self-destructive behavior. How many times have we found ourselves in situations that are entirely contradictory of where we want to be and what we want to be doing? It might be when our long-term relationship finally seems to be moving to the next step, and suddenly we begin talking about independence and freedom. Or the budget we have set up for ourselves is starting to reduce our debt, to then find we’re at the mall grabbing every item off the sales rack. Or worse, we’re finally losing the weight we’ve been trying so hard to lose, only to destructively throw it all out the window over a weekend binge.

What makes us act in such reckless and self-defeating ways? The answer more often than not is Sabotage. Sabotage can seem to come out of nowhere and most often right when we are beginning to realize success and reach our goals. Recognizing how sabotage and its defeating ways appear in our lives is essential to stopping self-destructive behavior in its tracks. It begins with learning our triggers and trip-ups, and understanding how they are directly related. Triggers are our emotions that become activated by life’s trip-ups. Trip-ups are the events and situations that occur in our lives, and they are as unique to us as our taste in food. In essence, what trips us up doesn’t

necessarily mean it will trip up our friend or loved one, and vice versa. The mere fact that someone close to us doesn’t get affected the way we do, well, that can trip us up too! By learning our trip-ups, we can recognize and understand why we have a specific reaction that is ultimately leading us to selfdestructive behavior.

Here are some examples of trip-ups: 1. Social media postings 2. An unexpected event (either good or bad) 3. Confrontation with a loved one or co-worker

behaviors such as overeating, overspending, overdrinking, and expressing words or emotions to our loved ones that are contradictory to how we actually feel. Instead, when we are aware of our triggers and trip-ups, we have the power in those moments to stop, assess, and acknowledge what we are feeling and ultimately prevent any negative behavior before it happens. If you are ready to take back control of your life and stop sabotaging behavior, download my free Ebook From Sabotage to Success at www.vcwellnessllc.com

4. Nights alone 5. Unplanned financial constraint

These trip-ups trigger an emotional response within us. Over the years of working with clients on sabotage I have identified the top 10: 1. Loneliness 2. Rejection 3. Sadness 4. Hurt 5. Stress

6. Exhaustion 7. Anxiety 8. Hormones 9. Boredom 10. Anger

When an event happens, or as we’ve been discussing, a trip-up occurs and one of the emotions is triggered, our desire to continue on our positive path is sabotaged. This act of sabotage manifests in our destructive

Loneliness: A Risk to Health There are 7.5 billion people on planet earth, many of which are profoundly lonely. Why does this matter? Kerstin Gerst Emerson, a clinical professor from the University of Georgia, feels it has a direct link to mortality and overall physical health. In a world of technological growth, many activities that once involved human interaction are now reduced to an email or a text. Research from Brigham Young University shows a 26% jump in mortality related to loneliness. Time Magazine’s Mental Health special edition states, “Loneliness is on par with obesity in terms of its impact on a person’s risk of death.” To add to the loneliness factor, our entertainment venues have changed. Could it be that Facebook and social media, in general, have replaced many of our real human contacts? We can look at countless findings from data-based research that point to common or repetitive conclusions, some of which follow: Talking to depressed or lonely people about their feelings is helpful. There is no data that shows that open dialog is harmful. Attending events that bring us together with others are immensely helpful. Attending yoga classes, church, meetup groups and book clubs are just a few of the things that can help a person feeling the weight of loneliness. When we can articulate our feelings accurately to others it gives us a path for action. Communication about our feelings cannot happen in a vacuum, we simply need others. Some paths to enhanced mental and physical health can have double and even triple benefits, such as exercise where we meet others and also help our physical health. Dancing is another outstanding activity, providing a safe environment for meeting others and getting exercise which leads to so many outstanding outcomes. Meetup groups have also become an excellent doorway to meeting others with similar interests. Those that are feeling the painful consequences of depression and or loneliness should definitely reach out to others by designing a plan to meet and interact with others. Dr. Ed Katcher is presently Vice President of ABC Parenting, an active educational consultant and motivational speaker. He can be reached at edkatcher@yahoo.com or 636-751-9695.
