A Zen Bride Is a Happy Bride Whether it’s your first wedding or your third time around as a bride, weddings are still very special and can be very stressful. How are we to remain zen in the center of the whirlwind energies of wedding planning? My go-to is always extreme self care. Double down on yoga, meditation, journaling and couples counseling and you will not only dissipate any drama, you will be more deeply connected with your soon-to-be partner, which will shine through on the big day, inspiring and renewing your guests with the desire to love and to be loved. While both partners may be nervous, money issues and family relations seem to be the biggest triggers of stress for future spouses of every age and experience. The complexities of money and blending families are enough to set the most connected of couples on edge. Remaining secure and confident within your own boundaries while being open and listening to others will ease tensions, as will making requests rather than demands upon family members. Hearing your dream rather than hearing “you have to” will open them to participating on their own rather than manipulating them with demands. My own recent wedding is a good example of learning to find your zen so you can enjoy the occasion. Our wedding was at the Missouri Botanical Gardens last year. I dreamed of a garden party theme with seer sucker suits, suspenders, bow ties and derby hats on the men and amazing garden party hats and sophisticated sundresses on the ladies. “Kindly requested” somehow still felt like a “requirement.” I decided just to share my enthusiasm for this vision individually with family members and friends. With 130 guests, surely some would share my enthusiasm for this theme at the Botanical Garden in June! I was pleasantly surprised by my nuclear family, my brother, sister, their significant others and my nieces and nephews, who touched me the most by going “all out.” My sister-in-law found the perfect hats for all the male family members and my vision of our family picture – with the men throwing up their hats in a celebratory Hurray! – came true. Our enthusiasm was infectious. Friends from Boston and Aspen knew exactly what the invitation’s “garden party attire” meant. Seer sucker suits, flapper sun dresses, and floppy hats were worn. Many guests even wondered if there would be a prize for best dressed… this would be typical for a Stacy party. However, this was my wedding. The prize was to be LOVED! There are usually several opportunities for the bride to make on-the-spot decisions. Taking a few minutes and breaths to center before responding can help you enjoy every moment. Envisioning the perfect day, requesting the perfect day from your spiritual helpers, remaining open and flexible for the Universe and your helpers to conspire to align that perfect day, even though it is not “planned,” can make for a day BEYOND your dreams. This will set the tone for your and your beloved partner’s journey together.

May it be all that you dream and more! Namaste, Stacy

NATURAL SOLUTIONS FOR YOUR SKIN Mad Hippie was born as skincare for surfers. The husband and wife that founded Mad Hippie spent several years abroad surfing and adventuring in Central America- and acquiring plenty of sun damage along the way. After years of searching for the safest, most effective ingredients available to heal and protect their skin, they found that it was difficult to find resultsdriven products that had all of the necessary actives with none of the harmful additives so prevalent in the skincare industry. So they decided to create the line they were looking for by bringing in the expertise of dermatologists, naturopaths, and pharmacologists to create a safe, effective line that contains all of the good stuff, and none of the bad. Since 90-95% of “skin aging” is actually sun damage, these products are for everyone – not just surfers.

Wedding Day Skin Of the myriad elements of a wedding—the dress, the flowers, the food—guests most often remember the joy on the bride’s face.

To ensure a complexion at its loveliest for a wedding and the photos that capture that day forever, it’s best to plan early. But even for a wedding a month away there are treatments to ensure that a bride will look her best. A board-certified dermatologist will tailor and schedule treatments for optimal results on the wedding date. For conditions such as acne or brown spots, dermatological care should begin a year in advance. For most brides, however, a 6- to 12-month window yields the best results. A trial run of any treatment well before the wedding is essential, in case the skin reacts in an unusual way. Every bride has unique preferences. For brides wanting to leave behind acne scars of youth, fractionated laser treatments, such as the CO2RE Laser Fractionated Resurfacing™ and Fraxel Restore Dual,® can help smooth the skin. For those suffering from pimples or redness associated with rosacea, Fotofacial RF® laser treatments can help smooth the skin. To target specific areas and enhance wedding photos, especially to reduce

shadows that may show in images, facial volume can be added with Juvéderm® or Restylane® Lyft. To reduce frown lines and soften wrinkles, BOTOX®, Xeomin® or Dysport® treatments are key. Brides with moderate to severe under-chin fat can be treated with KYBELLA® for an improved profile.

harmful rays. Tanning beds cause irritation to the skin and can increase the likelihood of skin cancer and age spots. When outdoors, reapply sunscreen every one to two hours and wear large brim hats to shade the face and neck. To receive the right treatment for achieving individual wedding-day goals, consumers should choose a clinic operated by a board-certified dermatologist who has the experience and dedication to clinical research and clinical outcomes and for whom patient safety is top priority.

Brides who desire an overall improvement in skin texture and a more even skin tone will appreciate the dewy glow created by chemical peels, microdermabrasion and dermaplaning. Consistent at-home care with dermatologistprescribed products for 6 to 12 months before the wedding is essential, and accounts for 50 to 70% of the results. From 8 to 12 weeks out, most brides prefer to avoid treatments that involve downtime. Between 4 to 6 weeks it’s best to avoid moderate treatments. However, dermaplaning, microdermabrasion and even light peels can be done the week before a wedding to rejuvenate the skin.

Laser & Dermatologic Surgery Center is the premier center for cosmetic dermatology, laser skin treatments, and Mohs surgery in the St. Louis area. The clinic was opened by board-certified dermatologist George J. Hruza in 1999, after teaching dermatological surgery for 11 years. Visit www.LaserSurgeryUSA.com or call 314.878.3839 to schedule your complimentary cosmetic consultation with Mary McKaig, RN, BSN to learn more.

Skincare You Can Actually Drink! NAÄRA BEAUTY DRINK

Skin care you can drink, Naära™ to help replenish skin’s natural loss of collagen over time. THE BENEFITS: • Visible results in as few as four weeks • Promotes skin elasticity and firmness, minimizes the appearance of fine lines, • Minimizes the appearance of deep wrinkles • Increases skin hydration, promotes normal collagen formation.

Collagen is a long-chain amino acid and the most abundant protein in the body. Composed of the individual amino acids Glycine, Proline, Hydroxyproline and Arginine, in nature it is found exclusively in animal tissue, especially bones and connective tissue. Collagen is responsible for giving skin its elasticity, hair its strength, and connective tissue its ability to hold everything in place. In fact, the collagen protein makes up 30% of the total protein in the body, and 70% of the protein in the skin! The body’s natural collagen production declines with age and many modern lifestyle factors (like stress, poor diet, gut health imbalances, etc.) can also decrease the body’s ability to make it. While collagen is beneficial to the entire body, it is most noticeably beneficial to the skin. This is because as a person ages, the epidermis (outer layer of skin) thins and loses elasticity in a process known as elastosis. As this happens, a person tends to show more signs of aging and acquire more wrinkles. The good news is that these changes do not seem to be permanent or irreversible. A double-blind placebo study conducted last year found that women who took collagen

Wink & Flutter The Lash Boost By Lynn Schroeder

Eyelashes (just like your skin) are prone to life’s ups and downs. Whether you opt for heavy mascara or an all-naturale lash look, it pays to know the full story behind your fringe – that way you can prep for a lifetime of lush, healthy-looking lashes.

Here are a few things all of our eyelashes have in common: • Your eyelashes work hard every day. Eyelashes demand their fair share

of attention – but did you know they also serve an important biological function? It’s true. Those beautiful lashes also protect your peepers from dust, debris, wind and sunlight, in addition to triggering the blink reflex.

•Y ou are born with a certain number of eyelash follicles (openings in skin through which lashes grow). And, as hard as you might wish on it, this number will not increase during your lifetime. •P eople typically have around 100

eyelashes on the upper eyelid and half as many on the lower lid. But

were in, say, your teens or early twenties, you aren’t imagining it. The appearance of our eyelashes not only changes the older we get (sigh), but eyelash follicles can actually stop producing new lashes. Now that you’ve got the facts, there's no reason to fret. Set yourself up for the ultimate lash look at any age with R+F Lash Boost. This proprietary formula with Biotin and Keratin deposits an infusion of protein to dramatically improve the look of lashes while protecting them against future damage from everyday beauty routines that pull and tug. The result? Lush, longer-looking lashes that are 100% real and 100% yours. For most of us, primping eyes comes last in our daily beauty routine – but maybe it’s about time we put them first. Ginnie Grimm, RN, National Injection Trainer with Galderma and Tonya Pollak, RN, CANS, National Injection Trainer with Allergan

FemTouch Consultation Ginnie: Hi, my name is Ginnie. I’m a registered nurse here at Synergi MedSpa. Sarah: Hello, my name is Sarah. G: I hear you are interested in our FemTouch treatment. To give you a little background, my co-worker at Synergi, Tonya Pollak, RN, CANS and I both perform the FemTouch procedure. We each have over 10 years of experience in the aesthetic industry as well as extensive experience in female wellness. So what questions can I answer for you? S: I have a friend who recently had FemTouch, but I felt embarrassed to ask her if it might help some of my issues. You see, I have to intentionally control my laughter because there is always a consequence. I tend to have leakage, and that is primarily why I’m here. G: You are not alone. Many women experience incontinence. Have you had children? If so was it a vaginal birth, or a c-section? S: I have had one vaginal birth. G: It is common to experience incontinence after child birth. Are you also experiencing any discomfort with intercourse? If you are having dryness or pain associated with intercourse, it is called dispernia, and it is also quite common. S: It’s not too bad, but not as pleasurable as it once was.

G: Thank you for your openness, it allows us to honestly discuss how the FemTouch treatment could help you. Technically speaking, FemTouch is an out-patient, minimally invasive, non surgical, laser vaginal procedure that stimulates new collagen production, for healthier tissue. Just like many of the facial collagen stimulating treatments we offer, by triggering collagen production, new tissue growth is enabled through this non-hormonal procedure. The new tissue is firmer, making it feel younger and increasing natural moisture. For leakage or incontinence specifically, the procedure helps by tightening and strengthening the tissue around the urethra, meaning fewer accidents. Overall, FemTouch will increase moisture, create firmness, and make intercourse more pleasurable.

G: The first three days there will need to be pelvic rest, but after that it will increase sensation for both of you, making intercourse more pleasurable.

G: You may experience a minor heat sensation during the treatment but it is very gentle and you should not feel uncomfortable.

G: We recommend a series of three for optimal results. FemTouch treatments are cumulative and make the vaginal tissue thicker and stronger each time. A majority of women have achieved the result they were looking for with this three-treatment series. S: Do some people require more than three treatments? G: We have treated some cancer survivors that required up to seven or eight. But their situation is different as they tend to have much more vaginal dryness. Their bodies don’t respond as quickly because they don’t have the natural hormones found in healthy tissue. S: Who typically receives the treatment… younger women or those going through menopause?

S: Well, that sounds so much better and I’m sure my husband would agree.

S: Will I experience pain with this procedure?

S: How many treatments will I need?

G: We have treated all ages. Perimenopausal women, menopausal women and even young mothers who have recently had children. We’ve had positive feedback from women of all ages. S: Thank you, Ginnie, for making me feel comfortable and reassuring me that I’m not alone in my symptoms. I’d like to schedule a time for my first FemTouch treatment. Having grown up in Belarus and moving to the U.S. in 1998, Alex Borodko is intimately familiar with huge life moments and the accompanying emotional and mental challenges. “When I moved to the U.S., each day was exciting,” said Alex. “But, even so, that positive exhilaration of this new chapter of my life took a mental toll. I was stressed a lot.” For many couples, weddings and wedding planning can be the same – incredibly exciting yet sometimes stressful. Importantly, dancing, Alex’s personal anecdote, is backed-up by decades of clinical research and science. “Dance training significantly reduces anxiety,” said the results of a study in the Perceptual and Motor Skills Journal. A 2003 study in the New England Journal of Medicine by researchers at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine discovered that dance can decidedly improve brain health. “Studies show that dance helps reduce stress, increases levels of the feel-good hormone serotonin, and helps develop new neural connections, especially in regions involved in executive function, long-term memory, and spatial recognition,” science writer Scott Edwards relayed in the Harvard Medical School’s Harvard Mahoney Neuroscience Institute Newsletter. Today, as the owner of Majestic Dance Studio, Alex leans on the stress-reducing benefit of dance when designing a wedding dance. “A couple planning a wedding is under enormous strain,” he said. “So, at Majestic, when we choreograph a dance for the reception, we make it as easy as possible for the couple while ensuring they know how valuable dance is as a stress reliever!” A recent pair of students at Majestic, Niky and her father Marc, tapped Alex to design a memorable swing dance routine for the reception, witnessing Alex’s skill and dance power first hand.

Designing a Memorable Wedding Dance that Lowers Stress & Builds Emotional Bonds The multitude of to-dos in planning a wedding can be beyond daunting. Yes, a wedding will be one of a bride and groom’s most memorable and bonding life experiences, but the road to that actual ceremony and reception can offer layers upon layers of anxiety and stress. Some would think that adding a professionally choreographed dance routine to the reception would only add to those stresses but, counter-intuitively, dancing has the opposite effect – it lowers stress while deepening emotional bonds.

“At first, I thought having to learn a new dance routine would be fun, but only add to the anxiety of planning the wedding,” Niky said. “However, it had the opposite effect. When I was dancing, I had fun and it helped me envision how much fun celebrating with my friends and family was going to be. My dad lived halfway across the country, but Alex made learning the routine easy for us despite the challenging circumstances. He would choreograph part of the dance, we would record our practice and then send the video to my dad to learn with his instructor. I believe that the dance lessons I took helped relieve my stress about the wedding and it also gave me one of my favorite memories with my dad.” So, when a new wedding couple is knee-deep in the stress of who sits at which table or the flower arrangement, consider adding a dance routine from Majestic. It will help reduce those anxieties! Alex Borodko owns and operates Majestic Dance Studio with his wife Sara. Located in Frontenac at 10460 German Blvd, Majestic offers a wide variety of dance lessons for all skill levels– ballroom, salsa, Bachata, swing, and more. Standing Head to knee strengthens the legs, glutes, abdominal muscles, back and arms. Practicing this pose also improves flexibility in the hamstrings, back and shoulders. In addition, when the final phase of Standing Head to Knee is achieved, Jalandhara Bandha (Chin Lock) is activated, which massages the thyroid and stimulates the body’s metabolism.

The Exercise and Diet Program You Need to Keep Your Summer Bod Summer can be busy. It can also be full of big calories. Baseball games. Backyard BBQs. Vacations. Ice cream. Beer. You get the picture. The good news is that most of us are naturally more active during summer. The extended hours of sun and the hustle and bustle of running kids around and chasing after them means that we burn more calories. Learn to be okay with shorter strength workouts, like the ones listed below, and follow a few of our favorite nutrition rules to stay in swimsuit shape during the summer months.

Simple Nutrition Tips The 90/10 Rule:

You may find yourself hungrier because of your increased activity level, and that’s okay. You don’t have to stick to the super strict diet that got you back into your sundresses and skinny jeans. We love the 90/10 rule. Stick to your diet 90% of the time and cheat, guilt free, 10% of the time. The key here is GUILT FREE.

Meatless Mondays:

Pick a day of the week and eat like a vegetarian. We like “Meatless Mondays” because it’s the start of the week, and the alliteration works well! Eat as many vegetables as possible. Trade in your steaks on the grill for some grilled eggplant or veggie skewers.

Eat the Rainbow:

Summer is an easy time to find delicious fresh fruits and veggies. Each day, try to eat a full rainbow of fruits and veggies — red, yellow/orange, green, blue/purple, white. Pro tip: know which color is your biggest challenge and plan for it early in the day.

Time-Efficient Exercise Programs The Countdown:

Start with two multi-joint exercises (anything that requires you to bend and flex at your knees, hips, ankles, shoulders,

elbows, etc…), such as Kettlebell Swings and Goblet Squats or Lunges and Pushups. Start with 10 reps of each exercise, then do 9 reps of each exercise, followed by 8, 7, 6…1 of each exercise. Get it done as fast as possible.

Look Better. Move Better.

Feel Better!

Get a 21 Day membership for $21 (Offer valid May –July)

Call (314) 375-6348 www.e3performance.com

The 20-Minute MRT:

MRT stands for Metabolic Resistance Training. You’re gonna do a circuit of big exercises, e.g., Deadlifts, Lunges, Chest Presses, Pullups. Pick an exercise for each of the following movements: lower body push, lower body pull, upper body push, upper body pull. Do 6 reps of each exercise, and do as many circuits as possible in 20 minutes.

Kettlebell Swing/Bear Crawl:

We love the big muscle activation and power of the kettlebell swing, and this exercise is another countdown. Get yourself a runway of 10 yards or so. Start on one end of the room and do 10 kettlebell swings. Then, bear crawl to the other end of the room and back. Next do 9 kettlebell swings, and again, bear crawl to the other end and back. Continue to countdown your reps until you hit zero. You’ll finish with your last bear crawl. Get this done in as little time as possible! You can find each of these workouts on the e3 Performance & Fitness Facebook page or watch and subscribe to our videos on YouTube.

LOCAL YOGINIS by Tina Farmer

Summer is the perfect time for getting outdoors, meeting up with friends and for weddings. Whether you’re a bride, bridesmaid, the mother of the bride or groom, or an invited guest, yoga is a great practice to help you manage stress while boosting your health, energy levels, and wellbeing. This month’s Local Yoginis share some of their favorite de-stressing poses.

Studio: Sweet Peace Yoga Peggy Callahan (TOP) Peggy began her yoga journey after taking an outdoor yoga class at the Kirkwood Farmer’s Market in 2006. At that point, she was hooked, receiving her 200-hour RYT from YogaSource in 2011. Peggy quickly began sharing her love of yoga, teaching at Sweet Peace Yoga in Kirkwood and becoming an integral part of shaping the community. Striking a true balance of two things she loves, Peggy continues teaching classes at Sweet Peace Yoga and has come “full circle.” If you don’t find her on her yoga mat, then look for Peggy outdoors - hiking, biking, or working at the Farmer’s Market.

After almost 20 years of nursing in emergency medicine, yoga was an instant love. As a student, Peggy began to find calm and peace in her life, both on and off the mat. An avid athlete, she found the perfect connection with breath work, focus and stretching, helping her complete her first half Ironman in Napa Valley California in 2012. These days, Peggy incorporates her love to nurture and teach with a gentle, yet athletic approach, guiding her students to move from the inside. She encourages kindness, compassion and acceptance both on and off the mat, and practices her love and light mantra to stay balanced and steady.

Studio: Pure Hot Yoga Janlisa Parris (MIDDLE) From her very first Hot Yoga class, Janlisa Parris knew the practice was for her. With a full schedule that includes spending as much time as possible with her grandkids, this Glam-ma truly appreciates all the health benefits of yoga. Hot Yoga isn’t something Janlisa does just to talk about; it’s a healthy lifestyle change with multiple physical and mental benefits. In addition to strength and flexibility, she found her practice helps

her cope with the symptoms of early onset menopause, and her doctors agree. Hot Yoga has given Janlisa a way of dealing with intense physical pain, allowing her to stay active and involved with her husband Darrel and her busy family. Since joining Pure Hot Yoga in October 2014, Janlisa has accomplished poses she never thought she would reach. In 2017, she was finally able to complete the 60-minute class that includes all 26 postures! She credits the instructors and staff at the studio for helping her on her amazing journey.

Studio: Blue Sky Yoga Mary Kociscak (BOTTOM) Mary first tried yoga in July 2016, after a year of going to the gym and becoming extremely frustrated. Her daughter-in-law, who has been practicing since college, made the suggestion and Mary hesitantly agreed. She started researching studios, reading all about the classes offered which to Mary seemed like a foreign language, and reviews written by the students. Mary decided to try the studio that became Blue Sky Yoga when she kept finding it listed with wonderful reviews.

Mary took her first class with yogini Annie Trachsel and she has since fallen in love with the practice. A computer analyst by day, she describes herself as a “desk jockey” and credits yoga for transforming her life. Mary practices at the studio six to seven days a week, has lost more than 60 lbs. and feels amazing. She is stronger and more flexible than she’s been in her 58 years of existence, and she can also control her panic attacks with the breathing techniques learned at Blue Sky Yoga. No longer on any medications, Mary is in control of her health and life, and that feels better to her than words can describe.

MEN MAT on the

by Tina Farmer

As the weather heats up, so do our busy schedules, and it’s all too easy to forget about self-care. To reduce stress and improve health all summer long, this month’s Men on the Mat stick to their practice. However, they just may add some outdoor yoga to shake things up and give their energy levels a natural boost.

Studio: Shanti Yoga Andrew Koch (TOP) About three years ago, Andrew was looking for something he could do to relieve stress and improve his mental health, so he decided to try yoga. He was quite nervous initially, because he had no idea what he was getting into, but the yoga practice gave him such a great feeling that he didn’t want it to end. All that nervousness went away with the first class and, since that time, he’s noticed many other benefits from his practice.

Andrew notes that practicing yoga has increased his confidence to do things that might feel uncomfortable or difficult, both on and off the mat. He’s starting to do more challenging poses and he’s better able to more efficiently handle stressful situations in life. Andrew’s mind has been clearer, his flexibility has improved greatly, and he’s doing things that he couldn’t have done a year ago. As a business analyst with a love for being outdoors hiking, running, and biking, Andrew appreciates the clarity of mind and ability to focus that he’s learned from yoga.

Studio: Go Yoga! Express Ethan Renko (MIDDLE) Ethan first tried hot yoga when a friend from work asked him to attend classes with her. He was hesitant at first, but eventually decided to give it a try. During his first class, he had no idea what to expect, and was happily surprised when he learned what hot yoga entails. He loves Go Yoga! Express’s variety of classes, the great workout, and how relaxed and calm he feels after class. After a long day of preparing taxes and helping others achieve their goals, he looks

forward to his time dedicated to his personal health and well being at Go Yoga! Express. What he enjoys most about yoga is the newfound flexibility, mental and physical strength. With the helpful tips and tricks learned from the great instructors, he cannot wait to reach even more goals and whatever else the future holds. John LeFort (BOTTOM) John LeFort began his study of yoga in 2010, when he and the 75-year-old founder of the company he worked for discovered the practice together. John was looking for an exercise program that satisfied his desire to stay healthy, flexible, and active as he grew older -- without destroying his knees. John was also inspired to get in better shape so he could spend more active, quality time with his grandchildren.

Today, as the busy owner of a small pet supplies store, John still relies on his yoga practice to help him stay fit and flexible. His favorite pose is the triangle, a seemingly simple pose that requires strength and centering to master. He also enjoys the fact he can stand on one foot and put on and tie a shoe on the other, an impressive feat (and feet!) at any age. John says that, at 61, he probably works a little harder at his practice than 30-year olds, but the rewards are worth the extra effort.

HEART

Don’t Let Planning Your Dream Wedding Become a Nightmare! by Beth Koritz, M.Ed., LPC

Transitions in life can be fun, exciting, sad, or bittersweet. The one trait almost all life’s transitions share is stress, and planning a wedding is near the top of the list of stressful events. A whole range of issues become magnified - issues with family members and friends, finances, your relationship with your soon-to-bespouse, and even body image issues (what bride isn’t on a diet?). Unfortunately, these issues can take a toll on your mental health, making it harder to deal with stressors during this hectic time. Societal expectations say we need to strive for perfection, and weddings are no exception. No wonder we want to avoid sharing our struggles (anxiety?) when well-meaning people say, “How are the plans going? You must be so excited!” We pretend to be happy and try to hide negative feelings, keeping our challenges and fears inside. This social isolation makes us feel worse and can lead to more shame and guilt. Remember, no bride is an island. Asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness. Step up the self-care. Be certain to eat for health, not weight loss. Meditate or do anything else that brings quiet and relaxation. Have someone to

talk to who won’t seem intimidating, judgmental or dismissive. Don’t hesitate to reach out for professional help, whether it’s normal stress or a mental health disorder. A therapist can provide a nonjudgmental and confidential space to feel validated, process your feelings, learn coping strategies and help you develop the confidence needed to tackle the issues associated with the planning process. Finally, your wedding is about connecting with your partner, friends, spirit and community. On the big day, you and your partner need to take a moment to observe the joy and happiness surrounding you. This is a sweet memory you will cherish always. OUR ONLY FOCUS IS ON YOU LOSING AND THEN MAINTAINING YOUR WEIGHT LOSS.

5 Tips to Managing Stress While Planning Your Wedding You may have been waiting most of your life for this time to come. Now, it is your turn to plan the wedding of your dreams, and while it is exciting, it can be overwhelming. You are eating, drinking, dreaming, and BREATHING wedding planning. It can consume your thoughts, conversations, and behaviors. The number of decisions a bride makes is countless and naturally leads to decision fatigue. Where will I find my perfect dress? What photographer will I hire? Which venue will be the best? Who will I invite? Preparation and selfawareness are key to managing stress during this busy time.

Here are five tips to help you stay calm and enjoy this exciting time:

Take Inventory: Recognize what you can handle and whom you

can count on for help and support before you walk down the aisle. I help brides, grooms, and family members evaluate their stress levels by identifying what persons and factors increase their stress. Also, I help brides identify strengths and weaknesses. Ask yourself, “What do I foresee as being a source of stress” and “How can I plan to manage it?”

We offer a variety of weight loss services including: • • • • • •

Customized Programs Lab Testing Full Blood Analysis Body Fat Analysis Electrocardiogram B-12 and B Complex injection

Outsource Decisions and Tasks: The more you try to do

yourself, the more stressed you will feel. Delegate tasks and decisions to others whom you trust. Ask others to handle aspects that you find particularly difficult or fatiguing. If you focus on aspects that you enjoy, your stress will be reduced.

Take Care of Yourself: It can be easy to get consumed with

planning and not take care of yourself. Take time to eat healthily, hydrate, exercise, sleep, journal, meditate, etc. Caring for yourself will improve your ability to manage stress.

Designate a “wedding free” time during the day or week

when you do not talk about, think about, or plan for your wedding. You and your loved ones need a break.

An integrated approach to healing and wellness. • Diet & Nutrition • Detoxification • Massage • Acupuncture • Chiropractic • Meditation • Trasformational Breathwork • Energy Therapy • Gifts (Health, Spiritual, Eco, Fun)

Adopt a Positive Mindset: Avoid language that is negative.

When you use language that is strengthening instead of defeating, it can make a big difference on how you view and manage stress. For example, tell yourself that the seating arrangements are challenging instead of impossible. A positive mindset puts you in a position to solve a problem rather than dwelling on it.

Experience The BioMat at The Center for Mind, Body & Spirit

Planning your wedding will not be stressfree; however, it should be fun! Managing your stress will make going down the aisle that much more memorable. At Mind Over Matters we utilize positively focused cognitive behavioral therapy. We work with individuals who desire positive change and our primary focus is on helping you create and attain contentment, fulfillment, success, freedom, and peace. The Benefits of Pediatric Spine and Nervous System Health

by Dr. Felicity Keough

Serving the families of St. Charles and surrounding areas with a strong focus on women’s health, including pre and post natal as well as pediatric chiropractic care. Services include, Chiropractic, Massage, Nutritional Counseling, Functional Medicine and Lactation Counseling.

More and more parents are understanding the importance of having their child’s spine and nervous system addressed. However, we are still frequently asked why a child would need to be adjusted. In this article I want to explain the importance of pediatric chiropractic. It is vital to understand that babies have tremendous forces upon them while in the mother’s womb, both during pregnancy and during the labor and delivery process. This alone reinforces the need to have a skilled pediatric chiropractor evaluate your baby after delivery. Now add in the possible complications of labor and delivery prolonged labor, distress, the need for forceps or vacuum extraction - and it’s easy to see why babies are born with birth strain of the spine. Due to this normal and natural part of any birth, pediatric chiropractors recommend parents bring their babies in for an evaluation to determine whether their baby experienced birth strain of the spine and what to do about it. Each child is very different and therefore would receive their own unique treatment using gentle chiropractic and cranial adjusting as well as other soft tissue techniques, if needed. Most often, when our child has an issue we are told by our child’s pediatrician that “they will grow out of it.”

Our bodies cannot outgrow a health issue, but rather young bodies learn to compensate with the issue as they grow and mature. As an example, chronic ear infections in children can turn into chronic sinus infections as an adult and chronic spitting up in a baby can turn into poor digestion and chronic acid reflux as an adult. As the child grows, their bodies change in structure and physiology, which may create different symptoms than when the child was very young. Pediatric chiropractic can help your baby, child or adolescent experience healthier bodies, greater function, less pain and give them back the vitality they were born to have. As a leader in healthcare, our mission at Keough Chiropractic is to partner with our patients in creating healthier happier lives and to be a positive force and resource for our community’s health through caring, familybased, exceptional chiropractic care. Using Tibetan Singing Bowls in Therapy Sessions

by Sheila Hunt

Patients at The Changing Pointe Addiction Treatment Center are learning new ways to achieve deep relaxation and a sense of well-being. Therapist, Steve Brunk, MA, LPC, leads mindfulness groups using Tibetan Singing Bowls, which reduce stress and anxiety and create a state of quiet consciousness. Sound from Tibetan Singing Bowls trains the brain to move into Theta brainwave frequencies that induce deep meditative and peaceful states and clarity of mind. The sound vibrations impact our nervous system, engaging our relaxation reflex and inhibiting the stress or pain response. Science has confirmed that sound can directly affect mood, brain waves, the nervous system and body chemistry. The vibrations of singing bowls stimulate the body to help produce the alpha waves that are present in the brain in deep relaxation. Singing bowls, also called healing bowls, can be traced back to Asia as early as 2000 B.C. They are made of an alloy of 7 different precious metals, creating a range of different sounds and overtones.

The benefits of singing bowls are immense and have been used to achieve the following treatment goals: ✸ Reduce stress and anxiety significantly ✸ Lower anger and blood pressure

✸ Improve circulation and increase blood flow ✸ Deep relaxation ✸ Increase mental and emotional clarity ✸ Promote stillness, happiness and well-being ✸ Stimulate the immune system ✸ A id the immune system and fibromyalgia and psoriasis in individuals that meditate

Effective Treatment for Depression

1 (800) 345-5407

✸ Decrease the intensity of pain

Playing the bowls usually causes an immediate centering effect. The tones set up a “frequency following response” that creates a balancing left/right brain synchronization. Meditating on the subtle sounds of the Tibetan Singing Bowl tunes one into the universal sound within and without. There are many ways to play the Tibetan Singing Bowls, depending on the sound or feeling you are trying to achieve. If your goal is to have the sound lead you into a quiet state of consciousness, generally the best way to play the bowl is to tap it with a mallet. Concentrating on the bowl, especially the pulses of sound as they become quieter and quieter, is an excellent way to bring the mind into focus. While the entire bowl moves from being struck, the sound radiates from the rim. Rim play provides a wonderful and often concentrated sound by rubbing a mallet around the outside of the rim. Brunk explains, “The idea is to ring it frequently so you hear the bowl again and again. Over time, the unique soundscape will find a place in your memory. You can use this imprint as a fast way to access the good feeling that is associated with the Tibetan Singing Bowl.” For more information about addiction treatment contact CenterPointe Hospital at 800-345-5407.

The Cabin is full of excitement, with a fresh boost on our former approach!

Dr. Rau uses 3 basic approaches for all chronic health problems:

Natural Health Cabin owner Sandy Klott recently attended the Module 1 seminar presented by Dr. Thomas Rau of the Paracelsus Academy of Biological Medicine. The Center, located in Lustmuhle, Switzerland, has helped over 50,000 people in the past 22 years, and more than a fourth of those people have traveled from America.

- Detoxification

The three paradigms of Paracelsus Biological Medicine include: #1 Addressing that the most frequent cause to modern diseases is toxic load of the body -- toxicity blocks the regulation and healing capacity of the systems. #2 The intestines and the intestinal bacteria are the main factors to the immune system and detoxification process. #3 Each organ can rebuild. The rebuilding process allows the assistance to heal the organ’s disease.

- Intestinal Health - Bacteria Regeneration Dr. Rau’s team advances individual health by searching for the root cause of the situation. The Paracelsus Institute is making great progress by focusing on the interior issues of the body, not focusing on the symptoms. Mastering Life’s Complexity

Years ago during my childhood, my brother started a club. It was called the Braveman’s club; we were the only members. He had the top rank of First Class Braveman and I was the lowest, tenth class. The purpose of the club was to perform acts of bravery. In fact, if I could impress my brother I could be promoted, which never happened. I did sustain numerous bruises, scratches and once a few broken bones. When I turned 10 my brother joined the Marines and that was sort of the end of the club - or was it? The club did instill in me the hope that acts of bravery and courage against the odds could possibly lead to something wonderful. Of course, being brave alone will not help us attain victory. In the famous ancient Chinese writing, “The Art of War, leaders from thousands of years ago taught us wisdom that applies to many things not related to war. One piece of that wisdom is that “The primary colors are only five in number but their combinations are so infinite that one cannot visualize them all. Perhaps being brave requires a number of combinations to achieve our goals. So it is with our mental and physical health. There are only a few components: exercise, rest, nutrition and emotional support. We now understand that, when combined, these few components of physical and mental health are the complexity of life. Like the “Art of War states, they are not simple, but can be mastered into the meaningful whole that is our comprehensive self. Develop your plan, be brave and accomplish your goals. Include the components and master the difficulties of a complex life. Dr. Katcher is Vice President of ABC Parenting, an organization that enhances parenting skills. He earned his Doctorate from the University of Missouri in Columbia and has been an executive administrator, university professor and is an active consultant and motivational speaker. The Health Benefits of CBD Oil (or Cannabidiol) by Katie Thomas

We have eleven systems within our body that most people are aware of, for example, the digestive system, respiratory system, and nervous system to name a few. We also have a twelfth system that probably wasn’t mentioned in high school science class, called the Endocannabinoid system (ECS). It’s primary function is creating homeostasis (balance) that works with all the other systems within the body.

CB1 and CB2 are endocannabinoid receptors that are produced naturally within the body. Ideally these endocannabinoids circulate within the body when needed to keep the body functioning at its best. Phytocannabinoids are derived from plants such as hemp or echinacea that can interact and affect CB1 and CB2 receptors and, in turn, the Endocannabinoid system.

The Endocannabinoid system (ECS) supports the body’s natural responses to pain, stress, anxiety, and many other issues. It is comprised of receptors that lie within the body: the brain, organs, connective tissues, and glands. These receptors are CB1 (found mostly in the brain and the central nervous system) and CB2 (found primarily in the immune system and even found on white blood cells).

Cannabidiol (CBD) and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) are the two most abundant phytocannabinoid rich compounds found naturally in hemp. THC is responsible for the “high” feeling. CBD will not get you high but does have incredible health benefits. Research has shown that CBD can trigger the body to build more endocannabinoid receptors throughout the nervous system and immune system to create homeostasis. CBD acts like the key that unlocks the receptors in the body.

46 - YogaandSpaMagazine.com | MAY/JUNE 2018

PTSD, epilepsy, and IBS are now classified as “clinical endocannabinoid deficiencies.” CBD products give us the opportunity to ‘activate’ the Endocannabinoid system organically to produce more cannabinoids. If we support the production of endocannabinoids in our body with phytocannabinoids and eat in ways that help to nourish the receptors, your body has the potential to bring back a state of vibrant health. The Endocannabinoid system plays a large role in our body’s balance and can be nourished through phytocannabinoid rich products and certain foods. Anyone who has ever had braces knows how long it can take to move teeth. That perfect smile doesn’t just happen; an orthodontist slowly applies pressure to move the teeth over many months. A chiropractor uses the same approach with correcting a misaligned spine. It takes time for a spine to become subluxated, and it also takes time to retrain the body to get back to perfect positioning. How do we do this? With specific corrective adjustments, exercises, ergonomic changes and occasional structural restorative traction.

In our office, we treat the normal cervical (neck) curve on the above right as the “Arc of Life.”

Body Presencing

We can’t see it, but the nervous system, which is the master system of our body, is housed and protected by our spine. If the structure changes due to trauma, poor posture or repetitive stress, the nervous system does not fire on all cylinders. How often have you gone to the dentist feeling great and found out that you have cavities? Unfortunately, our spines operate the same way. Most of us understand the concept of regular dental maintenance. Why would you not do the same for your spine? Connect Your Mind & Heart for a Joyful Summer

by Marilyn Eagen

Summertime brings many activities and lots of fun events. It also brings an energy with it that feels fast and sometimes rushed. As an energy-worker and Shaman, I am aware of how the seasons affects our moods, thoughts and actions. Summer is the season of Fire! This can be a good thing as it keeps us wanting to have fun and gives us plenty of energy to do the things that we want to do. It can also leave us “burning the candle at both ends” or getting so “busy” that we forget what the purpose was all about. Fire is also the element of the Heart. I am inviting you, as you are planning your summer, whether it is your own event or you are attending other activities, to connect to your heart. Make sure that you are going to and doing things because it is what your heart wants and not out of obligation. As we are growing and changing, and the energies around us are evolving, we need to take a moment and feel what is true for us and follow our heart. Connecting is also about expressing what we want or need in a way that expresses our truth and demonstrates

beauty and eloquence. It sounds like that is not easy to do. However, there are ways to get clear and allow the solutions to show up for you.

Joy and fun are the primary energies of the summer season. No matter how much you have going on, allow yourself to truly enjoy the summer!

Here is a simple exercise to help you get clarity and connect your head (mind) and your heart, so that you can make decisions with more ease and grace.

Marilyn Eagen of Harmony Healthcare is owner of The Peace Place. She is a Shaman, Certified Energy Medicine Practitioner, Women’s Energy Coach, Quantum Success Coach, Reiki Master Teacher in Usui, Karuna, Holy Fire and Celestial Reiki. She uses an individualized and integrative approach in a spiritual and gentle way! Marilyn is available for one-on-one sessions (in office or phone), to teach classes, speak at your gathering, and for Shamanic clearings, journeys and ceremonies. She has many ways of assisting you to feel Joy and Peace in times of change!

Place your right hand on top of your left hand so that your little fingers cross each other and your thumbs cross each other. The middle three fingers of your right hand will be on top of your left hand. Now, sit comfortably and place your hands on top of your head while holding the hands position. Close your eyes, take some deep breaths and really feel your body calm, stay in this position for a few minutes or as long as you want. Then, keeping your hands together, move them down to your heart. Continue to breathe deeply with your eyes closed. You will in time notice that you can think more clearly and you will be able to make decisions that feel pleasing to your heart and mind.

OsteoStrong helps you live better and healthier at any age Interview with Laura Harper who, with her husband Johnny Harper, owns OsteoStrong St. Louis and are OsteoStrong Regional Developers in Missouri

What made you think about opening an OsteoStrong?

Once a week? Ten minutes? How do you know it really helps?

It’s a long story, but it started as a way to help my father. I learned that the OsteoStrong system can be beneficial for rehabbing stroke victims and I wanted my dad to start using it right away.

Biofeedback on each machine measures strength gains, and members monitoring their bone density with their doctor often see increases over time. One of the best success stories is the mother of the man who invented this equipment to help with her osteoporosis; she’s in her 80s and has the bone density of a 30 year old! 1 in 3 women and 1 in 5 men over the age of 50 will experience osteoporotic fractures. Knowing we are making a difference in reducing our member’s fracture risk is priceless.

Wow, that’s a powerful reason to start a business. How does it actually work? Think about gymnasts. They have some of the best bone and skeletal health on the planet. Why? Because when they flip through the air and strike the ground, it puts tremendous pressure on their skeletal systems. The “high impact force” triggers new bone and muscle tissue growth, which has a positive effect on many aspects of health. Our system gives the benefits of high impact force, without the risk of injury. Under the supervision of a trained technician, each Spectrum device allows individuals to experience the precise level of force for their musculoskeletal system. And here’s the kicker – you only do one 10-minute session a week. You don’t even break a sweat!

Can’t you get the same results by lifting weights at the gym? The answer is “No!” OsteoStrong’s Skeletal strength conditioning is completely different. Research shows that the minimum amount of pressure to trigger new hip bone tissue is 4.2 times bodyweight. That’s easily attained with our system, but not with weights. We also trigger “myofibril” growth, which develops the density within muscle cells. The metabolic rate of this change is longer and the structural changes are longer lasting. This is why we see such rapid strength improvement, at all ages.

50 - YogaandSpaMagazine.com | MAY/JUNE 2018

So, “myofibril growth” helps athletes? Absolutely. Because of the bone and muscle density changes, athletes can improve overall performance, have fewer injuries, and play their sport longer.

Don’t Sweat It De-stress Before the Big Day By Traci Coughran

Your wedding day is approaching. There are so many things to plan and coordinate: the invitations, the caterer, the cake, the dresses, the flowers, the decorations - and on and on.

Oh the STRESS!!! Don’t underestimate how stress impacts your body. The American Institute of Stress estimates that 75 to 90% of all visits to primary care physicians are for stress-related problems. Long-term stress is also the cause of countless physiological effects on the body, such as increased blood pressure, weight gain, and a weakened immune system. The stress hormone cortisol is a key factor in raising heart rate and blood pressure, and leads to the deposit of excess calories in the midsection. Elevated cortisol levels interfere with learning and memory, lower immune function and bone density, and increase weight gain, cholesterol and your risk for heart disease. Chronic stress and elevated cortisol levels also increase the risk for depression, mental illness, and actually lowers life expectancy. Whether it’s a wedding, or a project at work, or just your hectic daily life, when you plan each day, be sure to include time to de-stress. Plan to take care of yourself so you can better take care of everything and everyone else. A great method to de-stress both body and mind is infrared sauna therapy. Although infrared therapy has been around for a long time, only recently has infrared sauna therapy gained global recognition as a new way to reduce both mental and physical stress. Scientific evidence shows that infrared sauna therapy helps the body maintain healthy levels of cortisol. While cortisol levels stay relatively the same during a sauna session, they drop immediately afterward and remain lowered more regularly.

Another therapeutic benefit of infrared therapy is an increase in happiness and lower stress levels. This benefit is caused by increasing bet-endorphins in blood that leads to the feeling of euphoria. In fact, whole body heat therapy has also been shown to improve symptoms of depression in cancer patients through this mechanism. As a reaction to infrared heat therapy, the body releases an opioid called dynorphin, which gives you a feeling of dysphoria. To compensate, the brain then increases production and sensitivity of receptors for euphoric hormones like beta-endorphin. These changes are semi-permanent, meaning that people that use a sauna regularly may actually be happier in everyday life. Finally, sauna use increases the hormone BDNF (brain derived neurotrophic factor). Studies have shown that increases in this hormone are an effective way to combat anxiety and depression. Plan to rejuvenate your mind and body by experiencing the relaxing heat of an infrared sauna, by adding it to your schedule once a week. In just 40 minutes of infrared sauna therapy your body and mind can de-stress while burning some calories and experiencing the many other health benefits associated with infrared therapy. Traci Coughran, owner of Feel Good Infrared Sauna Studio in Chesterfield has been involved with health and wellness throughout her career. Why Women Should Have Their Own Investments Investing is a skill everyone should possess, yet some women either don’t invest or delegate the task to their spouse. Many say that they have too much on their plate or don’t know where to get help. Investing can help level the playing field. Women who participate in investing decisions become more informed and more comfortable about investing. To learn more, women can talk to a financial advisor, take an investing education class online or read books about investing. Gaining that knowledge is essential because investing can help level the financial playing field for women. Owning assets is empowering. In general, women know money, but they often lack confidence in their abilities. Women are more likely to become family caregivers, which results in not only lost income but also in a lack of financial empowerment. It’s not uncommon to

sit down with a couple and hear that the woman doesn’t feel like she has a voice even though they make decisions as a couple.

spouse will still be able to maintain the household finances. C. Michael Unterreiner, ChFC, founded Financial Legacy Associates to create an environment where financial professionals could serve their clients better by sharing their experiences and ideas. He has served his clients by recommending investment and insurance solutions to their financial planning, retirement planning and college funding challenges.

Financial equity within a marriage often leads to greater mutual respect. If only one spouse is earning an income, and all the financial assets are in that person’s name, the other spouse lacks a sense of control. Having assets in your name makes you feel safer, more capable, and more empowered. Women should have some investments exclusively in their own name. To that end, consider setting up an IRA for each spouse. Married couples who file a joint tax return can contribute to Individual Retirement Accounts for both spouses, even if only one works.

Reducing unpleasant surprises. It normally makes sense for married couples to have both names on every investment, other than tax-qualified accounts such as an IRA or 401(k). If joint names are used, and an emergency occurs, the other

“There is no one alive who is youer than you.” That Dr. Seuss quote is the idea behind Kristin Mayer’s Ladue home-goods and gift shop, The Spotted Pig. The artist / owner understands that your home is an expression of yourself, so her wildly eclectic store reflects her crafty, quirky imagination. “I enjoy being different and being me,” Mayer says. “The more you believe in what you like, the more it seems people understand it – and [they] love the uniqueness of my mixing of styles.” “I have always loved art, crafts and design,” the Saint Louis University graduate says. “I grew up [in St. Louis] with a mother constantly redecorating and a father who was a homebuilder, so I was surrounded with design all my life.” Mayer became familiar with the tastes of St. Louisans while working in local boutiques and dreaming up her own ideal shop, named for her favorite animal – the pig. (She proudly sports a pink pig tattoo on her wrist!) The Spotted Pig is a rustic industrial take on home décor, offering unique, freespirited household furnishings, vintage and statement jewelry, enticing apothecary lines and more from the Midwest, East and West coasts, and even Canada. “I have a knack for finding that perfect place

on a road trip [for] unique finds,” Mayer explains. “I go with my gut. I pick things that excite me – that look like nothing else I’ve seen around.” The result is a shop with something for everyone – fashion and art lovers alike. The store also offers The Spotted Pig custom furniture line, designed by Mayer and handcrafted by a local master carpenter. “He uses old-school techniques and stands behind all his masterpieces for a lifetime,” Mayer notes. The line features custom-made, hand-carved farm and coffee tables, as well as unique pieces, such as a dock cleat console table. Some of the shop’s most popular jewelry includes vintage recreations by Sutton Lasater, fashionable statement pieces from Kate Pollmann and Collections by Joya, all local artists. Apothecary lines Linnea’s Lights and KOBO pure soy candles, and porcelain diffusers by Apothecary Guild and Illuminaria, are also popular. “I really try hard to find smaller brands that have that same quality as the well-known, bigbox companies, but offer a different look,” Mayer says. Mayer loves to surprise and delight her customers, whom she calls “beautifully

eccentric free spirits and rustic bohemian souls.” “They are fun, and they aren’t afraid to be daring and choose items that make them smile inside and out, no matter what the trends are,” she notes. She enjoys getting to know her customers’ unique tastes and styles and plans to connect with more clients through craft classes. Although no dates are set, the fun gatherings for small groups feature complimentary wine to enjoy while crafting and making new friends. “I love my customers!” Mayer says. “I love doing what makes me happy and then sharing that joy with others and seeing how much excitement my handiwork gives them.

Life is about what makes you happy.”

Beat the Heat with Energy-Conscious Windows from Renewal by Andersen®

Consumers are becoming more educated about environmental matters. A 2016 Pew Research Center survey among American adults showed that 75 percent are particularly concerned about helping the environment as they go about their daily lives. And when it comes to the home, that concern is reflected in the products homeowners select. They are increasingly searching for products that will help them lower utility costs while reducing their carbon footprint.

Committed to Energy Efficiency The right windows make a substantial difference in a home’s energy efficiency. According to energystar.gov, using ENERGY STAR®-certified windows can help homeowners reduce energy bills – and carbon footprints – by an average of 12 percent nationwide. Andersen Corporation has been an ENERGY STAR partner since the program’s inception in 1998, and in 2018, was presented with the ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year-Sustained Excellence Award by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy. The award recognizes Andersen’s initiative in protecting the environment through superior energy efficiency.

At Renewal by Andersen of St. Louis, we share this commitment to being responsible stewards of our environment. We install products from Renewal by Andersen®, the replacement window division of Andersen Corporation, which produces a wide variety of replacement windows and patio doors that meet or exceed ENERGY STAR performance standards. Advanced technology in manufacturing has led to superior glass and framing materials that, when combined with professional installation, give homeowners optimal energy efficiency and beautiful windows that will last for decades.

Save Energy, Increase Comfort Andersen’s latest development is SmartSun™ Glass with HeatLock® Technology, the most energy-efficient glass we have ever offered. This new glass option provides near triple-pane performance in a dual-pane window. SmartSun Glass gives you the benefits of Low-E glass, plus it keeps your home more comfortable by regulating the temperature while still letting sunlight shine through. The HeatLock coating reflects heat that likes to escape your home in winter, while also reflecting exterior heat that makes your home hot in summer. HeatLock

coating was specifically designed to meet the more stringent ENERGY STAR® requirements for windows in the Northern Zone.

Stop Interior Fading In addition to energy savings, another benefit of SmartSun Glass with HeatLock Technology is that it filters out 95 percent of harmful ultraviolet rays. Ultraviolet rays are a leading cause of interior fading. SmartSun Glass helps protect your furnishings from the damaging glare of the sun, so your furniture, curtains, carpets and artwork stay beautiful for years to come. If you’re ready to reduce your energy bills and become more environmentally conscious, look no further than replacement windows and doors from Renewal by Andersen of St. Louis. Diane Butrus Finds Success Indoors & Out By Sarah Iba

Stress is inescapable, and combating it is an art everyone must master in order to find a sense of harmony. Today there are thousands of products, classes and techniques promising to solve the pressures of daily life aimed at consumers. However, one of the most effective ways you can balance your mind, body and soul is to simply walk outside. Better yet, say scientists, exercise outdoors. Study after study has confirmed the psychological benefits of outdoor exercise. In a report by the National Biotechnology Institute, researchers found participants who exercised outdoors had a reduced rate of stress and mental fatigue. They also concluded those same individuals had improved mood and self-esteem. One local St. Louis woman is living proof that routinely stepping out of the gym and into the great outdoors can lead to a healthy and wellbalanced life. Diane Butrus is a successful executive. She is co-owner and chief operating officer of the Gateway Fashion Group, an international company operating in 60 countries, on six continents.

Despite a rigorous schedule, Diane has made it a priority to experience nature and incorporate fitness into each day. “I am happy when I get to go outside and workout,” Diane says with a grin. “And, when I am happy, I am more fun and productive.”

as little as 45 minutes, but my favorite is a four-hour ride, which is about 50 miles,” she estimates.

However, when discussing bicycling, Diane is almost giddy. Her excitement is infectious and inspiring. “When I get to use my body and mind, I feel balanced and strong,” says the cycling enthusiast. On her bike, Diane is in her element. The power of fresh air and the connection she feels with cycling is clear. “It isn’t much different than meditation for me,” Diane explains.

While riding a bicycle 40 to 100 miles a week may not suit everyone, going for an evening stroll is an activity most can enjoy. More than simply pleasant, its proven benefits can provide mental clarity and a sense of peace.

The business leader credits her routine fitness as a factor in her professional success. “Being competitive in sports makes me competitive at work,” “...One of the Approachable and Diane acknowledges. most effective ways welcoming, Diane’s “Managing my time you can balance your mind, to include workouts bubbly personality body and soul is to simply lends itself to easy makes me good at walk outside. Me-Time in the Moutains by Allison Young

Yes, it was partly the mountain air. The sprawling adobe resort sits at the foot of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains in scenic Taos, an artsy town that’s inspired everyone from Georgia O’Keefe to Julia Roberts. It was partly my travel mates, a fellow group of stressed-out soul-searchers looking for more than me-time (yes, including your very own Stacy Oliver Neal). But it was mostly the resort itself, an 84-room respite without a hint of hustle or bustle. El Monte is in the business of rejuvenation and we were all there to lap it up.

Day 1: Got Llama? You know when “Lunch with a Llama” is on the itinerary, you’re in for an extraordinary day. After a pick-me-up breakfast smoothie at The Gardens, we headed to meet our hiking mates (all rescue llamas) and their fearless leader, Stuart Wilde, an aging hippie who’s managed to keep his youthful glow by doing a job he loves (mental note: learn from Stuart). Now, llamas aren’t exactly obedient; they stubbornly stop when they have to do their business (who can blame them?) and the most cantankerous complained ad nauseum if he wasn’t leader of the pack… obviously a narcissist. But we welcomed their sudden antics and interruptions; it gave us pause to take in the stunning scenery as we wound down the 800-foot deep Rio Grande Gorge, a geological masterpiece with ancient piñon trees and petroglyphs polka-dotted on rocks. Muscles tired from 1600-feet of hiking, my body wanted - no needed, the spa. Fittingly called The Living Spa, El Monte’s sanctuary is an undulating space filled with the rhythmic sound of flowing water and the sweet scent of aromatherapy, and it’s packed with so many plants you’re not sure if you’re inside or outside. I’m a glutton for treatments that balance the mind, body and spirit, and the menu was full of them. The Talistone won out, a hot-stone

massage/chakra balancer that had me so relaxed I may have dozed off for a second.

Day 2: Posing and Painting With hiking and spa-ing crossed off my “get-centered” list, next up was yoga. Now, I’m not normally a fan of resort yoga (too fluffy for me), but El Monte’s Heidi Gates proved me wrong. Not only a yoga instructor, she’s a massage therapist and has a degree in sport and wellness, and she somehow managed to get our group of gals to quiet their minds enough to vinyasa with ease, a rarity with a teacher you’re not used to. Freshly ironed out, the rest of the day was a blur of museums (Millicent Rogers Museum), historic landmarks (Taos Pueblo) and window shopping through historic Taos. I could feel my balance needle shifting back into “harmony,” but it took an explosion of pink to put it there permanently. Let me explain: While Stacy disappeared to some secret indigenous healing ceremony, the rest of us headed to “Sips and Strokes,” an acrylic art class at the hotel led by local artist Jim Cox. I studied art in college so I wasn’t crazy about some hotel art class, but it far eclipsed my expectations (kinda like the yoga class). Part painting, part therapy, we sat down to blank canvases and walked away with colorful creations (mine mostly pink) and a super-hero sense of accomplishment. Not bad for a two-hour session.

That’s not all I walked away with. After just three nights at El Monte, I felt simultaneously relaxed and rejuvenated, and ready to start planning my next visit. Perhaps a spring fling in New Mexico…

SIDEBAR: El Monte is a Green Machine The eco-warrior in me applauded the hotel’s eco efforts. Partly powered by solar panels, El Monte collects and reuses rainwater and has its own water purification and geothermal heating and cooling systems.

Finding a Little R&R at El Monte Sagrado in Taos, New Mexico Rolling into El Monte Sagrado Living Resort and Spa was like unrolling my yoga mat: my shoulders de-shrugged, my breathing slowed and my monkey mind quieted.
