Success Through Support Brrr! The weather has been impressively ‘winter-y’ this year! Hopefully you and your loved ones are staying warm and safe in spite of the ice and chill. I personally have spent many a night (and a few days) snuggling with a good book and a warm drink. Right now, however, I’m putting down my coffee to thank you for your loyal support, both for Y&S Magazine as well as your own health, beauty and wellbeing. 2013 was a banner year for us, and we are looking forward to bringing you even more inspiring information and resources to help you make 2014 your best year yet.
Publisher, Stacy Hunsicker, pictured with
This winter has brought a “flurry” Sheryl and Mike Bauer, the winners of of activity for Y&S Magazine. Once the BMW M Bike Carbon Racer at the again, our annual Living Fit Expo held Living Fit Expo donated by St. Louis BMW January 25th at Plaza Frontenac was Autohaus. This year we featured Bracelets that support cancer charities. more than 40 vendors and resources to support your health, beauty and lifestyle; three lucky guests each won a luxury spa getaway trip for two; and we raffled off a BMW M Carbon Bicycle, the proceeds of which were donated to Circle of Hope Bracelets. The fabulous fashion show featured Athleta, Eileen Fisher and Pace Farias lines of fitness and spa wear. If you attended, thank you! If not, don’t worry—there’s always next year! Mark your calendars for the last Saturday in January from 10am to 3pm. We’ll see you there January 31, 2015! Going back to the concept of support: Support matters, whether you’re running a magazine, running a marathon or metaphorically running through life. Making major lifestyle changes or even maintaining a routine on your own can feel lonely and certainly is NO FUN. Support makes all the difference, so if you want to stay on track or move to the next level, get people on your team who will help you achieve your goals. To improve your physical health, hire a personal trainer or private yoga instructor. To improve your financial well being, hire a life or business coach. To improve your emotional health, hire a therapist or spiritual counselor. Want to improve your skin? Find a great dermatologist and/or aesthetician. And if what you really need is a great new hair color or look, go to A Look for You Hair Salon - see ad on page 11. Self improvement begins with self-care. Self-care begins with self-acceptance. The more we love and accept ourselves, the more capable we are of loving and accepting others. As we learn to be gentle and forgiving with ourselves, we are able to be gentle and forgiving with others. May you have the best year of your life in 2014: a year full of joy, prosperity and abundance. And may you find the guidance and support to achieve your life vision in the pages of Yoga & Spa Magazine.

On the lake – in the mountains – beyond the ordinary Prepare to be pampered at this peaceful and tranquil Ozark Mountain escape. by Ann Krieger Perched high atop the Ozark Mountains and facing the breath-taking view of Table Rock Lake, Chateau on the Lake is the perfect getaway for every age. A premier spa with a lake views offers massages, facials, body treatments, nail services, hair and makeup. The hotel offers indoor/outdoor pools and Jacuzzi, a playground, tennis courts and a restaurant which all overlooks the lake. This kid-friendly resort offers a game room, a movie theater and a sweets shoppe. There is a boutique along with a library lounge for the adults. Upon our arrival to the eponymous Chateau, we were greeted by a majestic waterfall dividing the entrance drive. Strolling past Moonshine which lies next to the marina, we took a romantic evening swim in the refreshing lake waters .
We relaxed with the Table Rock Hot Stone Massage and the Lakeside Scrub and Massage. Incorporating semi-deep tissue massage and hot stones to knead and soothe aching muscles, the Hot Stone Massage was by far the most relaxing spa experience I have ever experienced. During the Herbal Manicure and Pedicure, my nails, cuticles and toes were caressed and worshipped while I admired the panoramic view of the lake. We also had full use of the eucalyptus steam rooms and dry saunas along with the indoor and outdoor whirlpools. Our savory lunch was delivered directly to our room from the resort restaurant, which offers casual meals as well as finer fare. Menu choices include “slow foods” with gluten-free items and Missouri trout. Friendly and attentive staff welcomed us wherever we went. During my stay, it occurred to me that this would be the perfect place for a destination wedding that may lie in my not-too-distant future. With its stoic and beautiful mountains as a backdrop, the picturesque setting gives the illusion of being in a far-off land. As we sat on a patio and watched the sunset over the lake and behind the mountains, I could not help but marvel at my pristine surroundings. Sometimes I forget how beautiful Missouri really is but the precious moments as the sun fell past the horizon, the Ozark Mountains graciously reminded me.

Paradise Found at Harbour Village Beach Club in Bonaire
With its unspoiled beaches, abundant wildlife reserves and perfect weather year-round, the Caribbean island of Bonaire is a breath of fresh air – literally (this idyllic tropical outpost’s name literally translates to “good air”). Three decades of environmental protections have kept this diminutive island a true tropical paradise – particularly for divers, who come to explore a coral reef environment designated the Caribbean’s most pristine and diverse. Travelers looking to immerse themselves in this natural beauty – along with unparalleled luxury – enjoy Harbour Village Beach Club. The resort, voted Bonaire's Leading Hotel in the 2013 World Travel Awards, is situated within an exclusive beachfront enclave on a fouracre, private peninsula surrounded by warm, crystal-clear Caribbean waters brimming with vibrant undersea life. Its Dutch Caribbean style private villas, with opulent décor and thoughtful details like secluded lanais and double hammocks, are nestled amid lush tropical gardens and a powder-white sand beach lined with swaying palm trees.

Harbour Village also features an onsite First Class 5 Star PADI dive and watersports center catering to all skill levels, and dive sites just offshore. Bonaire is designated as having the most pristine coral reef environment and most species of fish in the Caribbean by the NOAA and is consistently named Best Overall Dive Destination by Scuba Diving Magazine's Reader's Choice Awards. Because of Bonaire's leeward location outside of the hurricane belt and its calm climate, crystal-clear visibility prevails at any depth and gives an enthralling view of the rich undersea landscape. Dive sites just off Harbour Village’s beach include the shipwreck of the 60-foot "Our Confidence,” located just 50 yards from the beach. Another popular site, "Something Special,” is also a short swim away. Daily boat dives to numerous sites around the island, dive instruction
for all levels including advanced certification and specialties, and equipment rental are all offered to guests, as are unique programs such as florescent night diving --incorporating special UV lights to see the astounding array of fluorescent colors emitted by underwater animals and corals. The serene atmosphere of the island makes it a perfect place to relax, rejuvenate and pamper oneself. The Spa at Harbour Village Beach Club offers a full menu of professional massage, facial and salon treatments using Pevonia Botanica spa products. Guests experience quality, personalized service in the peaceful spa facility that captures the essence of relaxation and renewal. The open and airy fitness center, also located at The Spa, has state-of-the-art equipment. A private cascade pool and pool deck offer a tranquil retreat before or after a treatment, and is also a perfect spot for early morning or late afternoon yoga and meditation. The Harbour Village beach and dive shop pier are also perfect yoga spots. The calm waters of the Caribbean sea and the idyllic scenery let guests become one with nature.
“you can literally see the stress just melt away.”
In addition to diving, the concierge at Harbour Village can help guests craft the perfect itinerary of island adventures. Explore Bonaire’s famed solar salt beds and one of the world’s largest pink flamingo nesting grounds, or catch a glimpse of the island’s rare Bonairean Lora Parrot. Or relax at the resort, lounging at the seaside pool, dozing in a hammock on the beach or taking to the waves with the resort’s complimentary paddle boards and kayaks. Jean-Marc Petin, General Manager of Harbour Village Beach Club, said he looks forward to welcoming guests in the new year and watching them wind down from the hustle and bustle of the holiday season. “When they arrive here,” he said, “you can literally see the stress just melt away. We never get tired of helping that happen.”

Clean air, clean food, beautiful spa by Mary Lou Fitzsimmons
Among the many great things along the east coast is a beautiful oasis in the rolling woods of eastern Pennsylvania. Tucked in the forest of ancient hemlocks and bogs is a beautiful spa resort—The Lodge at Woodloch. One of several resorts in the area, it is located only an hour and half from both Philadelphia and New York City. The Lodge is devoted to yoga, restorative spa prescriptions and therapies, and many other forms of exercise and recreation. It attracts all types of spa connoisseurs. Couples, groups of girlfriends and business partners on retreat all convened there during my stay. The Lodge at Woodloch excels at customer service. From your first friendly greeting at the entrance gate to your last bon voyage, you have the experience of being completely cared for like a familiar VIP the staff wishes to indulge. body scrub, along with a sixty-five minute massage. Heavenly! The spa facial was excellent, much more relaxing and thorough than at many of the high-end spas I have reviewed. The resort offers much more than simply spa treatments, though. There is a team of trained naturalists who conducted a fascinating tour of the adjacent bog and glacial lake. A seemingly endless offering of classes had me considering extending my stay by a few more days. From aqua boot camp to Pilates and Kundalini yoga, to meditation and power napping, or hiking and fly-fishing, the needs of all types of enthusiasts are met. We tried to do as many as we could, always followed by a relaxing evening in the gorgeous library in front of a blazing fireplace. The last thing I’ll mention is the amazing spa food, which is available on a gluten free and vegan basis. Every meal was wonderful! Across all areas, The Lodge at Woodloch offers a beautiful experience.

Successful business woman and married mother of four, Donna Visocky never expected her comfortably predictable life to take the heart-stopping twist it did early one morning in 2003. It was a “parent’s worst nightmare” scenario – an insistent doorbell ring at 5:30 a.m., police cars parked in front of her house, and two officers and a chaplain standing on her front porch. Trembling and barely able to breathe, Donna froze for a brief moment just inches from the front door. She knew that by opening the door, she was somehow agreeing to accept whatever terrible thing had happened — what her heart was screaming to her would be soulcrippling news. She was right. What these men were there to tell her was unthinkable, more horrific than she could have ever imagined – Kristi, her daughter, had been killed in a car accident just one mile from home. In I’ll Meet You at the Base of the Mountain, Donna candidly shares – often with brutal honesty – the most intimate moments of her inner and outer struggle to rebuild her life after the loss of her child. Motivated by guidance she receives from Kristi on the other
side, and a compelling, but puzzling directive: “I’ll meet you at the base of the mountain,” Donna begins a soul’s journey to find meaning and hope in the midst of tragedy. The path to “the base of the mountain” leads to life-changing interactions with Mediums from around the globe, Spiritual/ Self-help “rock stars,” and Hollywood icons. And, although the path twists and turns in often surprising and frustrating ways, she never loses sight of her final destination. Donna’s emotion-packed story inspires and empowers, calling us all to live every moment of our lives with passion and purpose. I’ll Meet You at the Base of the Mountain is available at Amazon.com and soon to be in book stores nationwide. For more information please visit www.BellaSpark.com.

Yoga and Somatic Studies at Whitfield School Pictured: Dimitri Rucker, Gavin McGrath, Andrea Bugyis, Meg Maune, Jacob Eckstrand, Jessica Butler and Maggie Sullivan When Whitfield School History teacher Maggie Sullivan discovered hatha yoga as a college student in 1993, the physical, emotional and spiritual transformation that took place made her wish that she had begun a practice at a younger age, and she vowed to bring yoga to high school students when she began her teaching career. Fast forward to August of 2012, when Sullivan met Whitfield School French teacher Jessica Butler and the two bonded immediately over their shared love for Bikram yoga. Butler, a certified yoga instructor, agreed to help Sullivan start a yoga club for their middle and high school students. The club began with just a handful of girls who met every Tuesday after school for an hour of yoga led by Butler. The club grew larger every week; to Sullivan and Butler’s surprise and delight, by the end of the school year there were more boys than girls. The diversity of the group contributed to new friendships, stress reduction and efforts to improve healthy choices. President of the club, senior Gavin McGrath says Whitfield’s yoga club “has been my gateway to a more tranquil, centered and grounded lifestyle. I am hooked for life.”
Butler joined forces and created Somatic Studies. The course was very popular and filled quickly. This March, about 30 Whitfield students will participate in Somatic Studies, in which they will be introduced to an interdisciplinary studyof yoga, meditation, nutrition, positive psychology, philosophy and personal reflection. Students will take classes at Bikram Yoga St. Louis in Richmond Heights and Practicing Yoga in St. Louis and dine at restaurants that serve organic and locally-grown food. Guest speakers will enlighten students on topics related to ethics and eco-friendly choices. Students will also engage in meditation exercises and journal about their holistic experiences.
The enthusiasm for the yoga club and the Somatic Studies course is so rewarding for the whole community. Sullivan noted that “My yoga teachers have always taught me that yoga doesn’t only occur on the mat but also in our daily lives as we bring our mindfulness and joy to others and make healthy choices.” And certainly, Whitfield’s commitment to educating the whole child and promoting wellness has done just that as these young people’s lives are transformed by the incorporation of yoga into their school day.
That same year, Whitfield began its first inter-session, in which teachers were asked to collaborate to create an interdisciplinary three-day course. Once again, Sullivan and Yoga & Spa Magazine • Winter 2014

Quieting the Grieving Mind Through Yoga by Kelly Karavousanos, LPC and Judy Ruby, RYT 200
At the Center For Hope and Healing we focus on helping grieving individuals and families find mental and spiritual peace through grief support groups and individual counseling. Despite our program’s effectiveness for many clients, however, it seemed there was a piece missing to the healing equation: the physical connection to the mind and spirit, which we touched on philosophically but not something we could demonstrate in a concrete way. That is, until a trusted friend introduced me to Judy Ruby, who in 1992 had lost her son Brian to leukemia. Having found yoga as an additional means to facilitate her grief, Judy related her story: “After many years of grieving there was still more work to be done. I distracted myself from thinking about my grief most of the time, but when I had quiet time my thoughts would go to his illness and his death. How long should a parent have to go through this? I wanted to remember him, his life and his death by being present to it but not reliving the intense emotions. Through my yoga practice I began to notice that I was able to observe my thoughts but not feel the intense pain of grief. I wanted more of that. I didn’t want to avoid the thoughts that caused me pain.” Grief, whether caused by the loss of loved one, divorce or any other traumatic life change, can throw our lives into turmoil. We experience a myriad of emotions; each experience is individual to the person, but many people experience extreme sadness, anger, guilt, confusion, and intrusive thoughts. Grief is a natural process but it requires “grief work” and an intention to heal through outward expression of the inner feelings. Yoga is a natural healing tool that those who are grieving can use to feel good physically, leaving them both energized and relaxed. Yoga makes us more aware of feelings and awakens the senses to help the person stay present, breathing through the discomfort and staying calm. 16
Yoga & Spa Magazine • Winter 2014
The Grief and Yoga class and all classes at Janes House of Wellbeing are taught through verbal instruction, instead of demonstration. The student must stay focused, listening to the instructor and remaining attuned to their own body. Students are encouraged to distinguish their feelings from the grief story to which the painful emotions are attached. This mindfulness practice helps to show them they can acknowledge and co-exist with the pain of their loss, but let go of the obsessive thought patterns that create additional suffering. Breathing exercises help to further quiet the mind and relax the body. Students are taught simple techniques they can use when anxiety becomes intense and to help them relax and fall asleep at night. Moving the body helps release the stress of grief and linking the movements to the breathing in a rhythmic way quiets and focuses the mind. When the mind is quiet, we become aware of our habitual tendencies such as re-living painful memories. Over time we might notice the thought but not become attached to it, come back to the present moment, and allow the thought or memory to pass. Meditation teaches us that we are not our mind, that our true self can watch the mind as an observer. It is normal and sometimes necessary for individuals to go into thought and feelings of despair in order to grieve. But we can release these painful thoughts; we don’t have to dwell in them. “Yoga has taught me that I am strong enough to sit with the pain, to see it for what it is until I am ready to move on, just as I do during a strong posture practice. When I do move on, the pain is released and I don’t hold any of it anymore.” To learn more about healing grief through yoga, please join us at the Center for Hope and Healing (636-328-0878) or at Janes House of Wellbeing (636-255-9642), both located in St. Charles to learn more.

MEN on the MAT Extending the Fourth Quarter 'We are in the fourth quarter', ends the e-mails that connect our high school classmates 50+ years later. And, it is true in many cases. Too many cases. But, as I look around the men's dressing room after class at BikramClayton, and realize I could be the grandfather of three-fourths the 'room', I understand why I'm here: to extend the fourth quarter, and keep extending it.

I recently decided to let go of projects, battles, and causes for the sake of regaining physical, mental, emotional and economic health. The decisions were not easy; it's hard to let go. But letting go of those excess responsibilities released me from a great deal of excess pressure and stress. Now, instead of filling my time with activities that are counterproductive to my wellness, I'm focusing on activities that facilitate healthy body and mind. Where does hot yoga fit in? At the center, pain and all. I will never be able to put my legs where other people’s legs go. I may never be able to do all the positions twice; Standing Tree Pose remains a challenge. But the benefits of what I can do in every class outweigh the need to be 'perfect'. The instructor and the Bikram program make yoga accessible and affirming, even for someone my age. It’s too early to give a detailed testimonial. But I will say that I’ve dropped 11 pounds in a month, and when I need a boost, I go to a class instead of a donut shop. I’m making progress. The challenge is maintaining it. by Ed Golterman
Living Fit
Living a healthy lifestyle is the best way to calm down chronic inflammation by Michael Twyman, MD Inflammation is your body’s way of activating the immune system to help fix an acute injury. If you have ever cut your finger or sprained your ankle, then you are familiar with the redness, swelling, and pain that comes about by activating the immune system. The problem is when inflammation is chronic. The chronic inflammation is caused by the overstimulation of the immune system and promotes spasms in blood vessels, reactivity of blood sugar and cholesterol, and promotion of cancer growth by bringing in more blood flow with nutrients to the cells. Inflammation is a major contributor to atherosclerosis (plaque forming in the artery walls).
There are a few different lab tests that measure inflammation but two of the most important ones are CRP and Lp-PLA2. C-Reactive Protein (CRP) is a nonspecific marker of inflammation from any cause. Infections and injuries can raise CRP. Elevated CRP levels are a strong predictor of the risk of future heart attacks. LpPLA2 (also known as PLAC) is an enzyme that is produced during the early stages of plaque formation. This lab test does not tell you how much plaque you may have, but it is a marker for plaque that is metabolically active. Active plaques are at risk of rupturing and causing a heart attack or stroke. Elevated Lp-PLA2 levels are associated with a doubling of this risk.
The endothelium is the layer of cells on the inner lining of the arteries that separates the blood products from the muscle layers of the artery wall. The endothelium is only one cell layer thick and is very metabolically active. If the endothelium is damaged and becomes dysfunctional, the artery does not dilate properly and plaques can form where the endothelium is damaged. Inflammation can cause scratches in the endothelium.
Addressing dietary issues is key to decreasing inflammation. Eat whole foods and avoid allergy- provoking foods. Add more good fats to the diet (olive oil/omega 3 fats from fish such as salmon). Get regular exercise. Find ways to deal with stress. Aim for seven to nine hours of sleep each night to let your body repair itself. Living a healthy lifestyle is the best way to calm down chronic inflammation and reduce your risk of a heart attack or stroke.
The majority of heart attacks are caused by blockages (plaques) in the arteries that are less than 50% blocked. When the plaque ruptures a blood clot forms in the artery and cuts off blood flow downstream of the artery. The plaques are like little volcanoes beneath the surface of the endothelium that cause big problems when they erupt. Calming inflammation can reduce the likelihood that one of these volcanoes will erupt.
I will be discussing ways to reduce your cardiovascular risk factors as a keynote speaker at the Living Fit Expo at Plaza Frontenac on Saturday January 25, 2014 at 12:45pm.
Common Causes of Inflammation: - Poor diet: Highly processed foods especially with processed sugars, flours, and trans fats. - Lack of exercise - Poor sleep - Allergies: Food or environment - Hidden infections (i.e. gingivitis or h.pylori that can cause stomach ulcers) - Toxins (i.e. heavy metals or pesticides) - Stress - Obesity: Belly fat produces many highly inflammatory substances

Couple is Back to Getting a Good Night’s Sleep – Together
Thanks to Barnes-Jewish West County Hospital Sleep Disorders Center Brian Soldat booted his wife, Jennifer, out of their bed three years ago. He didn’t do so willingly, but Jennifer wasn’t sleeping soundly. The root of Jennifer’s sleeplessness was Brian’s snoring. His snoring had become so loud that Jennifer slept in a spare bedroom. “I knew my snoring had gotten worse, but I always felt like I got a good night sleep,” Brian says. Sleep disorders affect approximately 70 million Americans, but only 5 percent are diagnosed and treated. Sleep-related breathing disorders are characterized by
disruptions of normal breathing patterns that only occur during sleep. A co-worker suggested Brian contact the Barnes-Jewish West County Hospital Sleep Disorders Center. The center treats 1,600 patients each year for restless leg syndrome, periodic limb movement disorder, insomnia, narcolepsy and sleep apnea. Brian’s initially consulted with Anthony Masi, MD, sleep specialist. “Our patients must see a sleep physician before and after sleep testing,” says Dr. Masi. “I suspected he had sleep apnea and ordered the appropriate sleep study.”
Brian’s stayed at the sleep center in June 2012. Noel Sengele, registered polysomnographic technologist, told him what to expect. “He was pleasant and informative,” Brian says. “The room was nice and the bed comfortable.” While Brian slept, diagnostic equipment monitored him electronically and recorded data, while Sengele monitored him visually, taking notes for evaluation, interpretation and diagnosis by Dr. Masi. Following the first four hours of monitoring, Sengele allowed Brian to continue sleeping or if problems were detected, awakened him.
At 1 a.m., Sengele woke Brian. “He told me I would sleep with continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy,” Brian says. “I apparently had 29 episodes per hour that I stopped breathing for 10 seconds at a time. I went back to sleep with CPAP and never had another apnea episode.” CPAP therapy includes a mask, hose and an air compressor. It uses air pressure to push the tissues in the throat apart to allow air in and out without obstruction. It reduces snoring and prevents apnea disturbances. Dr. Masi reviewed Brian’s data, which included findings of an EEG, EKG, EMG and airflows, and Sengele’s notes. “The sleep study demonstrated that Brian had sleep apnea that responded well to CPAP,” says Dr. Masi. “I ordered CPAP equipment for his home use. Brian now sleeps with CPAP and his wife. “I never realized that I stopped breathing at night,” Brian says. “It took its toll. We feel better and are more energetic.” Lack of sleep impairs attention, alertness, concentration, judgment and problem solving. Chronic sleep loss can put you at risk for: • Heart attack • Heart failure • Irregular heartbeat • High blood pressure • Stroke • Diabetes • Mood disorder • Impaired immune system • Increased mortality if sleep less than six hours per night Barnes-Jewish West County Hospital Sleep Center can help patients on the path to getting proper sleep by offering: • Board-registered technologists • Comprehensive, leading-edge testing • Sleep studies • Consultation with board-certified sleep physicians, follow-up and referral services • Fully equipped, comfortable sleep rooms • Minimal wait times For an appointment or for information, call 314-996-8680.
Getting a good night’s rest is essential for good health. Sleep Disorder Symptoms: snoring, daytime sleepiness, irritability, memory impairment, erectile dysfunction, high blood pressure, morning headaches, difficulty managing blood sugar, pauses in breathing while asleep, acting out dreams, sleep paralysis, feeling a need to move the legs, difficulty getting to sleep, difficulty staying asleep, sleep walking/eating/talking

St. Louis’ Original Studio Salons
Owner, Tony Pringle, in U. City Studio

Yoga & Spa Magazine • Winter 2014
Fifteen years ago, non-profit executive Anne Kessen Lowell, hairstylist Tony Pringle and attorney Howard Smith took St. Louisarea beauty professionals by storm when they opened Metro Design Studio Salons, St. Louis' first high-end studio salon in University City. The "self-contained" studio salon concept caught on and the trio followed up with three more salons in Creve Coeur, Chesterfield and Des Peres. Today, Metro Design Studio Salons, managed by Lise Napoli, rents private studio salons to 100+ experienced hairstylists, estheticians, massage therapists, makeup artists and nail technicians at its four St. Louis-area locations. Each tenant pays a flat rental fee for a single or double studio salon which comes complete with the state-of-the art equipment needed by each salon professional. Maintenance fees and utilities are included in the rent. Each tenant is encouraged to design their studio salon to reflect their personal style and give it a name. Tenants have 24/7 access to their studio salons, set their own schedules and prices, keep 100% of their profits and carry the product lines that they choose.
“Encouraging professionals to be entrepreneurs and learn the ins and outs of running their own businesses is at the core of Metro Design Studio Salons' concept. Unlike concepts of the past where beauty professionals rented a chair in a salon or paid the owner a percentage of their commissions and had little say in the salon's hours, prices or products that they used, Metro Design Studio Salons' entrepreneurship concept was a welcome change to the industry standards. "Encouraging professionals to be entrepreneurs and learn the ins and outs of running their own businesses is at the core of Metro Design Studio Salons' concept," said Smith. "We were the first to introduce the idea to the St. Louis market, and we can boast today, 15 years later, that our company is still locally owned and operated here in St. Louis."Metro Design Studio Salons can also boast its high tenant retention rate of 95%, with waiting lists at most of its locations. "Professionals come to Metro Design Studio Salons for an opportunity to have control over their careers. They decide how much money they do, or don't make. It is up to them to make their own business decisions and we are there to support and encourage them, all 100+ of them. They are industry leaders." said Kessen Lowell.
Design Studio Salons' owners can always claim innovative leadership. "Being a hairstylist for more than 31 years opened my eyes to a niche that needed to be filled in the industry. Being able to run my own business as a professional in the cosmetology industry and have the privacy of a studio salon, with the flexibility to open my door and visit with the rest of the salon community if I choose is ideal," said Pringle. "I like running my own business." Although Metro Design Studio Salon's owners are ambassadors of small business in St. Louis, giving back to the greater community and helping others has always been a priority for the owners. Metro's four locations have participated in canned food drives and collected beauty-related items that were donated to Our Lady's Inn maternity home shelter. Used shoes and handbags in any condition were also recently collected at all four locations for donation to a St. Louis-based charity, the Clean Water Mission, that helps fund clean drinking water projects in poor parts of the world. In their professional and personal lives, the owners also participate in causes near and dear to their own hearts - Kessen Lowell is executive director of the Southside Early Childhood Center, Smith works to secure funding for Habitat for Humanity and Pringle donates his services to patients in hospice. Metro Design Studio Salons' owners left their mark on the local cosmetology industry when they brought the studio salon concept to St. Louis. Fifteen years later, they are still blazing a trail for entrepreneurship and charity. Let’s Dance! is good exercise and helps us sleep better at night because of the Vitamin D in the sun’s rays.” Those in the beginning stage of dementia or cognitive loss often feel restless. Walking can relieve tension and walking with someone affected with Alzheimer’s can relieve caregiver stress. Walking at least once a day is desirable, but twice a day is preferred, even if it is a walk to the mailbox and back. Check with the following physician to assure physical activity is recommended.
Who doesn’t like to dance? Watching both older and younger generations dance brings great enjoyment to everyone. Some children from Tippi Toes Dance Studio recently performed for the residents at Garden View Care Center at Dougherty Ferry. What a treat for both generations! The residents love visits from children and the children love performing for a gracious audience. Dance is only one of the many forms of exercise that benefits the elderly.
three Garden View Care Centers perform Happy Feet at 9:45 each morning. Happy Feet is a program created in 2002 by a physical therapist and a nursing home administrator at Garden View Care Center of Chesterfield to promote positive physical touch and increased body awareness. The activity therapist plays a CD of dance music, staff will pick a resident to dance with and the fun begins! If a resident is in a wheelchair, they dance sitting down!
Dance is one of the most enjoyable forms of exercise and it appeals to all ages particularly the elderly. Once the music starts, movement and memories begin. A person will associate a particular song to a specific occasion in their life or era. Those who experience present day memory impairment or forgetfulness will often recognize music from earlier times in their lives and it can be a great source of pleasure. Find out the genre of your loved ones preferred music and play it for them. Not only does the memory of a tune create a moment of joy, but it encourages movement. Often when listening to music residents will start to tap a toe or fingers will start wiggling in time to the music. Sometimes music courses through their whole body and they start to dance. They dance alone or together with friends and family. They even dance in their wheelchairs!
They can still move their arms or tap their feet. According to Carly Hellen in her book, Alzheimer’s Disease/Activity-Focused Care, “dance and movement promote physical wellness, increased body awareness, joy in active participation, feeling in control, ability to make choices, reminiscing, reminders of past life roles and experiences.” Wow! There are few activities I know of that can do all that!
There are many benefits to dancing. Movement encourages blood flow and flexibility plus it is hard to be upset or sad while dancing! All
Another form of exercise that is beneficial to those with memory loss is walking. Jolene Brackey states in Creating Moments of Joy “It
Dance is one of the most enjoyable forms of exercise and it appeals to all ages particularly the elderly.
Lastly consider an Adult Day Program for those with memory loss. A good adult day program encourages socialization with others in the same age bracket. Those attending, play word games, engage in discussion groups and converse with those more like themselves. Often being with others with cognitive deficits allow for a sense of comfort and ease. They are not alone! A good New Year’s resolution for all would be to increase exercise daily. Whether it is through dancing, walking, or participating in groups, benefits of exercise will abound! If you or your group would like to bring dance or yoga to seniors, please don’t hesitate to call. The calendar for 2014 is currently being set for all Garden View locations. Falling In Love With Your Home Over and Over Every Single Day in 2014 Let The Design Source LTD Transform Unused Space Into A Personal Retreat Very soon the clocks will fall back and those precious daylight hours will diminish. Shorter days mean your fitness options are limited; by the time you get home from work, the sun has drifted below the horizon, too dark for an evening walk/jog, and driving to a crowded gym is a hassle after a long day at work. For the fall and winter months, you need convenient options for staying active. Our solution: Work out in the comfort of your own home with your own personal gym! Imagine your trainer or yoga teacher coming to you after work (very popular
nowadays); imagine eating breakfast, then walking down the hallway to your private health club; imagine putting dinner in the oven and working out while cooking.

and then I was walking with a walker—all in one day!” exclaimed Cecilia.

Dave Sinclair Lincoln & Ranken Jordan Team Up Automotive dealer Dave Sinclair Lincoln is participating again in the Living Fit Expo, a health and wellness event scheduled for January 25 at Plaza Frontenac. The longtime area dealer will invite participants to test drive Lincoln vehicles throughout the day. For every test drive completed, Dave Sinclair Lincoln will donate $20 to Ranken Jordan – A Pediatric Specialty Hospital. Dedicated to serving the Saint Louis area, Dave Sinclair Lincoln continues its commitment to corporate responsibility and community service. Ranken Jordan is a bridge hospital that transitions children from hospital to home. The 34-bed nonprofit specialty hospital offers care through an inpatient program, free community programs and several outpatient programs, including outpatient therapy, intensive day treatment, a physiatry clinic and a comprehensive orthopedic/rehabilitation clinic for children with complex medical conditions. Ranken Jordan’s Care Beyond the Bedside healthcare model helps more than 300 inpatients recover every year, including St. Louis teenager Cecilia Detwiler. On July 4, 2010, 15 year-old Cecilia Detwiler and her brother Joe suffered massive injuries when their truck veered off the road and crashed into a tree. They barely survived. “I was trapped in the car for two hours while they tried to get me out. It was a really big mess,” Cecilia remembered. 30

After a gut-wrenching extrication, they were air-lifted to St. Louis Children’s Hospital, where Cecilia spent the next month recovering from several surgeries to salvage her mangled legs. At her acute-care discharge, she could barely move her legs. Cecilia also was suffering from acute stress disorder, a precursor to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. “They’re not my legs,” she would lament, while looking askance at her thick bandages. Her family faced the prospect of aroundthe-clock home care for Cecilia until she was ready for therapy. Meanwhile, Joe remained in the ICU, still in a coma from a life-threatening head injury. Instead, Cecilia was transferred to Ranken Jordan, a pediatric specialty hospital in St. Louis that collaborates with the region’s acute care hospitals to provide transitional care for seriously injured and medically complex children.
Blessed with a beautiful voice and not shy about sharing her talent, she often sang through her painful therapy sessions. Lauri Tanner, President & CEO of Ranken Jordan, said the secret of Cecilia’s success was her work ethic. “When I talk with Cecilia about her success, she frequently says that she ‘got up and got out of bed.’ She didn’t just lie around in bed and feel sorry for herself. She was up and moving and that made her feel alive,” Tanner said. “That’s the point of Ranken Jordan anyway, to just get out of your room,” Cecilia explained. Dr. Nick Holekamp, Ranken Jordan’s chief medical officer, says Cecilia is a good example of somebody who benefited from the hospital’s “Care Beyond the Bedside” approach. “She needed intensive medical management and highly skilled and frequent intensive therapies. Cecilia needed the oversight of our specialists, including the physiatrists and the psychiatrist”, said Holekamp. “Without Ranken Jordan, the process would have been longer, slower and more difficult. The family saw for themselves what a big difference we made in her life.” Deftly repairing her legs, medical experts thought Cecilia would need several months of inpatient rehab, but she was home in six weeks. Her brother Joe also recovered better than anyone predicted. Within a year both teens were back in high school, fully engaged in the challenges and joys of life. Today, Joe and Cecilia are both successful college students. For information or to learn how you can help more families transition from hospital to home, call 314-872-6400, email AskRJ@rankenjordan.org or visit www.rankenjordan.org.
From her first hours in the state-of-the-art facility, unique in the U.S., Cecilia’s complex wounds, physical and psychological, were treated comprehensively by a team that included a pediatrician, a physiatrist, and a psychiatrist. Long before formal therapy began, she felt herself getting better. “I just got clearance to walk and it hadn’t been two hours and they got me in the pool. I started walking in the pool, then on the parallel bars Pictured: Cecilia Detwiler

Y&S Interview
Let Food Be Thy Medicine St. Louis entrepreneur Tessa Greenspan shares her own story of healing through nutrition, top health practices, and the obstacles we set up for ourselves.
Y&S: You are known as "The Queen of Health." How did you come by this title? TS: After 20 years suffering with debilitating migraines and several years battling arthritis, I began researching health and wellness as a means of healing myself: I experimented with various products and supplements, started eating organic foods, and eliminated milk, sugar, white bread and crackers from my diet. Since making these major changes to my diet 30 years ago, I am now migraine- and arthritis-free and in peak condition. I’ve since dedicated myself to researching health trends and sharing my expertise as a public speaker and natural health entrepreneur. I like to think people see me as a role model of optimal health and what is possible for people as they age. Y&S: How would you summarize your wellness philosophy? What are the four most critical priorities for optimal wellness?

TS: There are four pillars of health—food, exercise, supplements, and positive attitude— which fuel the body and keep it strong. Toxic food choices account for the majority of health issues people face today, and much of the time people don’t realize the hidden toxins in the foods they are consuming. Exercise equips the body for handling the physical and emotional demands of life; if you’re not exercising regularly, you’re depriving yourself of critical training for life’s challenges. Supplements are like preventative maintenance; taking the right ones will keep your body running smoothly. Through my research, I’ve discovered some great, cutting-edge items to help people achieve optimal health. And last but not least, monitoring thoughts and emotions is a vital part of health—you have a choice about how you feel, and you can decide to replace negative self-talk with thoughts of gratitude and self-recognition.
Y&S: What one piece of advice would you give someone seeking a healthier lifestyle?
Y&S: What in your opinion is/are the biggest obstacle(s) to true health transformation?
TS: I absolutely Love life and helping those who Choose to live healthier. My favorite business roles are speaking on healthy living and mentoring women looking to take their businesses to the next level. I love building an international business, teaching and coaching my teams worldwide, and helping a select, qualified few become massively wealthy. I also mentor entrepreneurs through a non-profit organization called Prosper.
TS: In a word, choices. Every day, people make many small choices that affect their health. When someone decides not to take care of their body, or that lifestyle change involves too much sacrifice, that person sets up their own obstacles, and those can be the toughest ones to break through. But we can reframe those choices as life-saving changes that will help us to really live life to the fullest: Instead of “giving up” fast food, sweets, and soda, we’re Gaining a chance to be happier, healthier, and feel good about ourselves and what we can accomplish.
TS: Decide that you are worth it. A healthy lifestyle is about realizing that you deserve to be healthy, happy, and most of all, selfconfident. Y&S: What career accomplishment are you most proud of? TS: There are two things I’m really proud of. I paid off a debt of nearly $415,000 left to me in 1986 after my business partners declared bankruptcy; that’s the equivalent of a million dollars today. I turned a failing supermarket into a thriving business and later sold it at a substantial profit. Y&S: Is there anything else you would like us to know about you?
