Summer Time and the Living is Easy By Therese Dorer

“Summer time and the living is easy, the fish are jumping and the corn is high.” These are words from my favorite summer song, Summer Time. I love how this old song makes me happy, evoking summer memories. If you know the song, you would’ve noticed that I replaced the word corn for cotton, as we grow such sweet corn in this valley. It also makes me think of the Shamanic saying, “Does your life grow corn for you?” which simply means, “Does your life work for you?”

I encourage you to spend more time with Mother Earth during summer. Taking time to be with nature can release stress and opens your heart to the beauty that is there to be found. This also supports our sweet Mother Earth by allowing for reciprocity to flow from you to her, and back.

This flow is especially important for 2015, which in numerology adds to an eight. The figure of 8 is the same as above and below, a symbol of the infinite possibilities that will unfold this year. It is also a year where balance is important, so I encourage you to find that balance in your life by creating opportunities to refuel your physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual bodies. There are many wonderful places on earth. Find sacredness in waterfalls, lakes, rivers, meadows that are full of wild flowers, and beaches. I encourage you to seek these places of refuge and allow some time just to be. No agenda. Just sit on earth and breathe, aligning your being with the unconditional love of Mother Earth, grounding your bones to it. Enjoy your summer.

Therese has worked as a medium and spiritual consultant for 16 years; she also provides Shamanic energy healing. She has been channeling for the Sedona Journal of Emergence since 2004.

Fr o m t h e P ubl i sh er , E l i z a b e t h B e e d s Someone gave me a book once. It was called The Book of Idle Pleasures and it’s perfect for summer. The content reminds you to do things like watch leaves floating down a stream or river, sit in a hammock, read hardcover books, drink tea slowly... to stop rushing and savor the simple things.

Do you ever give yourself a break? Have you ever let yourself off the hook? Do you just sit still for an hour without doing anything (and by anything, I mean to say not even meditating)? Yes, even if you are ‘doing’ a meditation, it can be part of the busy-ness too!

How many of us spend most of our time rushing around? Even when we are on a holiday, we keep ourselves busy with constant activity. Even on a day off, we fill it with chores. Even when we could take a moment to breathe and enjoy the scenery or the company of the person we are with, we’re look-

ing at our smart phones or thinking about all the things we need to get done.

Living Life with Abundance 5 Things that you can do this summer By Tammie Oram

Practice Being Mindful

This does take practice! We also call it being “present”. Using all of our senses, touch, smell, sight, hearing and taste, take a few moments each day to quieten the mind and body to learn to appreciate our surroundings, calm our anxieties and top up our “tank” by being calm and at peace.

Practice Self-Care Abundance: This noun comes from the mid-14th century French, via the Latin abundantia, meaning "fullness, plenty." It is the opposite of scarcity. We use it and practice it in this way: When my “Love Tank” (G. Chapman) is over-flowing; I have more happiness to share with those around me.

Let’s fill up your “Love Tank” this summer and share your happiness with others and it will come back to you tenfold!

This is not “selfish”. Practice being kind to yourself; in thoughts and actions and watch the ripple effect on yourself and others. Learn to unplug, take big deep breaths, relax, do something silly that brings a smile on your face and lifts your spirit! These do not have to cost a cent. Treat yourself. What brings a smile on your face and joy in your heart? Flowers? Giggles? Chocolate? Playing with your children or walking with a pet? Take time out for yourself. If you are happy, it ripples out to others!

Acts of Kindness

Now when your “Love Tank” is full, may be even overflowing, this is the time to share your happiness. Do purposeful acts of kindness and share your experiences and love with others. This is what Abraham Maslow called “Self Actualization”.

Change Your Thinking Patterns

Take a look at your thought patterns. Do you have a negative default such as jumping to conclusions and automatically think that things are being done TO you, people are talking about you, that you are not worthy of positive attention, there must be an ulterior motive if someone is nice? Start thinking that people ARE nice, that they are SHARING their happiness with you and doing things FOR you.

Practice Gratitude

Every day, preferably just before retiring for the night, write down everything for which you are grateful for, for that day. Even the smallest of things can place us in a positive mind frame to have a wonderful sleep. Keep a gratitude journal so that you can go back and reflect upon those happy memories and share them with family members. A great gift to all members is when we hear that we helped in making someone’s day brighter!

Model: Danielle Bertoia www.fancyfreephotography.com

Individuals who are self-actualized often have what Maslow termed as peak experiences, or moments of intense joy, wonder, awe and ecstasy. After these experiences, people feel inspired, strengthened, renewed or transformed. Now go on and share your abundance with all those around you!

Why Use

Natural Soap By Karen Kilba

Your skin is porous and absorbent, it absorbs whatever it comes in contact with. Keeping this in mind, what do you want your skin to absorb? Most commercially-produced bars contain ingredients that are not necessarily healthy for your skin or your body. Many contain lathering agents, artificial additives, preservatives and are depleted of natural glycerin. These bars are hard on your skin and the chemicals in them are absorbed into your body, not to mention down the drain to pollute our environment.

Natural soap contains glycerin and is a by-product of the interaction of oil or fats with sodium hydroxide. When soap ingredients are combined, a reaction occurs called saponification. During this process, the sodium hydroxide (or lye) interacts with the oils or fats and produces glycerin, a safe, moisturizing compound. During this process the sodium hydroxide is removed and what you are left with is a product that is natural and healthy.

Glycerin is a humectant, which means that it attracts moisture. The glycerin in natural soap draws moisture to the skin and holds it there. Its unique moisturizing properties allow for your skin to remain hydrated for several hours after use. Natural soaps are better for you!

Natural soap is made by one of two methods called "hot process" and "cold process." The cold process method takes the most time, but it is undoubtedly the best method for producing the highest quality soaps, creating a long lasting, hard bar.

It is best to use essential oils rather than fragrance oils to scent soap. Essential oils are beneficial to your health and have natural antibacterial properties. Natural clays and charcoals help to remove toxins from your skin and draw out impurities leaving your skin purely clean.

Thinking of becoming a Yoga Teacher... By Nancy Whitticase, Namaste School of Yoga

Becoming a yoga teacher is a rewarding journey that has been described as a soul transforming, life changing experience. Whether you choose to take the journey as a way to deepen your own practice or to inspire others to awake and transform, the rewards are rich and life altering. The decision to transform from being a yoga student to a teacher can be a natural step.

The benefits of yoga are making headlines more and more these days. The latest yoga journal survey reports that the popularity of yoga shows no sign of fading. The number of practitioners in the North America has witnessed an increase of 30% in the last 4 years. So it's not surprising that people are seeking alternative paths such as yoga for reducing stress, anxiety and depression, sleeping better, releasing tension, increasing happiness, finding inner peace and cultivating the balance of overall health of the mind, body and spirit.

With the rapid growth of yoga over the past decade nonprofit organizations such as Yoga Alliance have worked in partnership with yogis to set up standards for certification in areas of anatomy, ethics, asana, philosophy, meditation, prenatal health, and children's yoga with safety and educating teachers being its main objectives. These standards are the buildings blocks for certification through their Registered Yoga Schools.

Yoga teacher training can help you to access the non-physical aspects of the self. Your energy, emotions, chakra's, intuition and things that we can’t perceive with the physical eyes but that we understand are part of our human design. Understanding how to light up from the inside and create an empowered life will help you to open your voice, access your heart and deepen your compassion and love for yourself and those around you. In a teacher training, you are always sharing parts of yourself with a safe and loving community. You will build lifelong friendships and a great community that feeds your spirit. If you are thinking of becoming a yoga teacher and shifting your career to health and wellness focus, this can be a helpful step. You may be presented with the gift of having a "purpose" rather than a "job". So follow your dharma, your life purpose, your passion and your inner truth. Invite curiosity around any inner struggles you may have about following your inner guide and remember your true life begins on the other side of fear! To be a teacher may be your greatest work of art!

Nancy Whitticase resides in Salmon Arm where she shares her 20 years of yoga passion by teaching weekly yoga and meditation classes at Namaste Yoga & Wellness Center and is lead instructor for the Yoga Teacher Training 200 hour certification through Namaste School of Yoga. www.yogasalmonarm.com

So what will you learn in a yoga school? You will be a yoga teacher in training! This is a great way to expand and still your mind! You will be reading the Yoga Sutras, the ancient philosophical texts of yoga that teach practitioners how to manage the workings of the mind through focus, discipline, practice and meditation. You will learn the obstacles that we all face and how the benefits of yoga can shift your awareness and create a more positive frame of mind. You will gain a broader understanding of yoga which will deepen your practice and help you in applying the philosophies to all other aspects of your life. Teacher trainings can help you to move through life challenges and transitions with more ease and less stress.

Yoga teacher trainings will give you the tools to practice more self-care and feel strong, flexible, and healthy. In trainings, you will learn about your body in great detail as you learn about the alignment and benefits of postures. You will be immersed in functional anatomy so you can understand how the poses affect your body and how to feel good in them. This learning will help you to limit future injuries, or recover from a current one. You will also learn how to modify and adjust poses for yourself and others so you can share this practice and teach if you want to. You will learn to challenge your limits through extensive physical practice. You will be more willing to break the boundaries that you placed on yourself and learn new and challenging poses.

Mindset By Sherrie Manholt

How Set is Yours?

Have you ever wondered why some people seem to struggle while others thrive? There has long been a debate among researchers about intelligence. Some believe that the range of a person’s intelligence is fixed and based upon factors such as genetics. Other camps point to different backgrounds, learning styles, training and experiences and see intelligence as changeable.

It turns out that both are true, and that mindset is the key factor in determining how much smarter you will become and ultimately, how you will fare in life. Many experts now agree that it is not always the people who start out the smartest who end up the smartest. Carol S. Dweck, Ph.D., longtime researcher in the fields of mindset and intelligence, said “my research has shown that the view you adopt for yourself profoundly affects the way you lead your life.”

Those with fixed mindsets have a necessity to prove their intelligence in the classroom, in their job and in life. They do everything they can to appear to succeed, to appear smart and to garner acceptance. They mask their insecurities, often over exaggerate their abilities and avoid taking risks. If they don’t try, they can’t fail. They do not find value in effort. If they aren’t immediately successful, they lack the drive and perseverance required to improve. They find challenge very uncomfortable. Individuals with a growth mindset believe that they can get better through effort. They thrive on challenge, embrace failure and know that they can change anything through adaptation, application and experience. They can see themselves clearly and identify their strengths and weaknesses more accurately than those with fixed mindsets.

Growth-oriented people are passionate about stretching themselves beyond their perceived limits and value the effort required to stick with something that isn’t easy or that takes time to master. It is this mindset that allows some to thrive during the most challenging times of their lives while others crumble.

Top 3 reasons for cultivating a growth mindset!

1. It is required to be able to convert life’s setbacks into future successes.

2. The perseverance and resilience produced by the growth mindset is the number one ingredient in creative achievement.

3. The life you really want is found outside your comfort zone. Only those with a growth mindset are willing to take the risk and to grow through the discomfort.

Right Education for Growth By Sri Madhuji

Right education must involve much more than simply molding the students into future workers or citizens. Education must take a new path to release human potentialities. If we desire a dynamic and progressive culture, then the educational process must take into account the inner life of the person. They must be encouraged to inwardly examine and observe the mind and understand how it works.

Education is not just some information that is put into your brain. The ultimate goal of education and training is to make the person grow. It must equip the common person with skills in their daily endeavors, bring out strength of character and a spirit of philanthropy, otherwise we create a toxic, violent, ruthless world that is unhealthy for all of us.

We see the human being and the human mind as multi-dimensional. Right education is based on the premise that each person finds identity, meaning, and purpose in life through connections to the community, to the natural world, and to spiritual values such as compassion and peace.

There are many paths of learning and real teacher values them all. The diverse learning styles must: Foster collaboration rather than competition in students (child) and help them feel connected.

Use real-life experiences, current events, stories, dramatic arts and other lively sources of knowledge in place of textbook information, to kindle the love of learning.

Encourage reflection and enquiring rather than passive memorization of facts. This keeps alive the flame of intelligence that is so much more than abstract problem-solving skill.

Accommodate differences and refuse to judge and label in order to bring out the unique gifts contained within each person.

Aquagenics The Water Meditation

M

By Audrey Meuse

editation isn't effortless. Monkey mind runs rampant as frustration builds; we all know the experience. Yet, if your goal is the meditator's focused mind and relaxed body, warm water can readily assist you to go deep with in. At the Centennial Building Wellness Centre, we use a unique combination of Ai Chi: a slow form of moving meditation developed in Japan to stretch the meridians in water along with Autogenics: a training in muscle relaxation using autosuggestions originated in Germany. We call it Aquagenics. How does it work?

The meditator begins with Ai Chi. He follows a series of prescribed slow movements linked to the in/out breath. This has the effect of not only deeply relaxing us along with giving us a gentle stretch, but it also stops our "critical" mind and switches us to a sensory awareness mode. We become deeply attuned to our body and its tensions. The warm water continues to relax our muscles allowing the tension to dissolve. When we have completed our Ai Chi series, we are ready to go even deeper by using the Autogenic suggestions of warmth and heaviness: the buoyancy of the warm water (96 ·F) creates a feedback experience that intensifies the intrinsic power of the suggestions. The subsequent altered state we find ourselves in, when linked to a new suggestion or belief, becomes a powerful tool for selfhealing and self-exploration. After we've learned to access this state in water, we find the same autosuggestions work on land to restore our relaxed concentration or used as a self-help therapy. Benefits include: • reducing stress • promoting relaxation • awakening the innate healing power we all possess • release your latent creativity • deal with unresolved emotions • improve your ability to concentrate

For more information on the Aquagenic program call the Centennial Building Wellness Centre: 250-374-7383

If we really want to bring peace and happiness to the world then, we must critically examine how we are educating and treating our younger generation.

An intuitive, informative and insightful speaker, Sri Madhuji has a unique ability to help you understand the root cause of your problems and empower you to deal with it directly. He blends common sense with real-world experiences and eternal teaching to educate you in a supportive and caring environment that is nourishing. He wants to help your natural development needs and patterns that are often neglected. Then you will grow with commitment and strength to transform your environment.

When is it Time to Cleanse? By Nature’s Fare Markets

C

leansing can be intimidating. Stories of diets that consist only of maple syrup, cayenne, and lemon juice are enough to scare off even the most gung-ho individuals. Have no fear, as there are loads of different cleanses to try, from easy to follow meal plans all the way to that infamous Master Cleanse. Your body will give you signals when it’s time to cleanse. Regularly experiencing feelings of fatigue, constipation, trouble focusing, and sleeping problems are all indications that your body may need to cleanse. Our external environment is full of toxins that make it difficult for our systems to run at their peak efficiency.

Many of these toxins are fat-soluble, meaning that they are happy to accumulate in the fatty tissues in our bodies. Heavy metals are one of these toxins and are suspected to contribute to chronic illnesses and disease. Some studies say that we are exposed to as many as six million pounds of mercury each year. Pesticides, toxic molds, chemicals in cleaning detergents, even contaminants from water supplies, can all amass in our cells and tissues, cause discomfort and, more seriously, chronic illness.

Toxins are so omnipresent in our lives that the average baby is born with close to 300 known toxins in its umbilical cord blood. Now more than ever, naturopaths and some doctors believe that a number of today’s most common diseases are caused by waste buildup. Overloaded with toxins, it’s very difficult for our bodies to rid themselves of stressors that can make us sick. According to the New York Times bestselling author, Dr. Mark Hyman, our bodies have a threshold of toxicity that can be maintained before our health begins to go downhill. Dr. Hyman refers to this threshold as “total load.”

As the amount of everyday toxins piles up, symptoms of illness and disease begin to show themselves.

Not everyone’s body deals with toxins in the same way. Some people have a greater ability to naturally rid themselves of waste and chemicals, and others may feel the effects of toxicity regularly.

10 www.InteriorWellness.com | Summer 2015

According to Dr. Hyman, toxins come from external factors like exposure to heavy metals, the food we eat, allergens, and chemicals like pesticides, fertilizers, and air pollution. Toxins can also build up from the inside, like in our gut, if we are unable to digest food efficiently. Cleanses act like gentle scrubbers in our bodies, and loosen up the waste and toxins that we need to eliminate. A welltimed cleanse can help to restore energy, reduce constipation, regain focus, aid in sleeping, and may encourage weight loss.

The Evolution of the Soul

S

By Tania Niedbala

ince 2012, our collective consciousness is rapidly evolving and individuals are experiencing a greater sense of awareness; Awareness of ourselves, our community and the Earth. The frequency of Earth is shifting and this is reflected in our own lives through our thoughts, feelings, behaviours and daily experiences.

The old energy is based on competition, fear, survival and a linear left-brained approach which keeps us trapped within our mind. This involves limited beliefs, sabotaging behavioural patterns, blocks in abundance and the inability to forgive. The new energy is based on love, gratitude, forgiveness, abundance and unlimited possibilities. These attributes reside within our heart.

At this time, many people are experiencing challenges related to this global shift. The old attitudes, behaviours and self-destructive patterns are simply no longer working. Trying to control, manipulate and make things happen is extremely exhausting. This is encouraging individuals to transform and create a new approach to life.

Many people are questioning their relationships, jobs, roles, and wondering what their life purpose is. Things that used to satisfy us, simply do not anymore. Our old belief systems are falling apart, leaving room to embody new self-empowering patterns that actually support the growth of our soul.

Some signs that you are experiencing this shift are feeling fatigued and requiring much more down time alone, longing for a job that supports your soul purpose, or deeply desiring a relationship where your voice is heard and your needs are met. Other symptoms include body tensions, headaches, heart palpitations, depression, anger, intense frustration, food intolerances, flu symptoms, increased selftalk and time distortions. You may also experience increased psychic awareness, lucid dreams, feelings of profound love and moments of intense insight and synchronicity.

We are awakening and remembering who we are. We are walking together in this soul journey divinely connected by love, and so it is. Tania’s mission is supporting personal empowerment & transformation. Tania offers Spiritual Coaching, Energy & Sound Healing, Past Life Regression and Young Living Essential Oils. Second-hand Stress By Janice Otremba

Aaaaaaaaahchooooo! Oh crap! It's the sneezes and sniffles. You know what that means: you have caught the common cold that's as contagious as yawning, flu and stress. Yes, stress. Oh wait! Did you know that stress is contagious? You can bet your sweet hiney it is.

You caught a case of stress.

Think about that time you were listening to a co-worker panic about a deadline. She was anxious, agitated and burned out. Did you notice your mood change when she was done venting? You may have felt stressed out just by hearing her panic. Like a yawn can circulate around the room, so can stress.

Researchers from the Max Planck Institute for Cognitive and Brain Sciences and the Technische Universität Dresden have learned that an individual's cortisol levels can rise by watching a TV program of someone in a stressful situation. It's called "stress empathy" and it means that second-hand stress is a real experience in our everyday lives.

Smiles are contagious.

You know what's great about stress empathy? The reverse is true as well. Much of our behavior is based on emotional triggers − positive and negative − that we don't even notice. A 2009 study showed that your stress levels are affected by smelling sweat that results from stressful situations. These alarm pheromones can subconsciously trigger the fear centre in your brain, the amygdala.

So when someone at the office is having a bad day, you feel it too. Luckily, many of us have that one friend who can lift our spirits effortlessly. Her positivity radiates and we find ourselves catching a case of the smiles. All of a sudden, life doesn't feel so bad. Let yourself smile , even when you feel yourself getting stressed out. Your smile just might infect the whole office and help everyone relieve the tension.

Kick your life into high gear. Janice Otremba helps you beat burnout and get stuff done. Learn how to lower your stress levels and achieve your goals. www.janiceotremba.com

By Darlene Fair

Ahhh, summer... easy, breezy summertime. Time to relax, decompress and unwind.

What does all that mean? To me, it means many things-- being able to move and express myself freely for one.

When I move, be it practicing yoga, dancing, singing, running, white water kayaking or skiing, I am in the present moment and I am generally in a relaxed state. Optimally flowing. I relax, release and unwind.

What relaxes you? Take a few minutes and make a list of 5 to 10 (or more) summertime activities that make you feel absolutely amazing. Next, make appointments with yourself to do these things this summer. From now until September, you have scheduled “awesomeness time!

RELAX, UNWIND AND SHINE!

I believe that when we can express our true selves, we have the opportunity to be in a state of ease and flow. For many years, I have studied and been working as a Registered Massage Therapist, Yoga Instructor and Musician and I have been amazed and fascinated to witness so much growth and healing both in myself and others.

Registered Massage Therapists utilize many different techniques, some of which include: myofascial unwinding, myofascial release techniques and visceral massage. Myo means muscle, and a very simple explanation of fascia is the connecting tissue within the body, sometimes referred to as a "spider web" that interconnects the many layers of tissue within the body, like the skin, organs etc.

When fascia is unwinding, it does so in a three dimensional manner. Ideally, all the tissues of the body should slide and glide over one another without unwanted adhesions. Just as the viscera (organs) all have a motility and mobility pattern, all the tissues have movement or sliding patterns.

Now, to practice tuning into different sensations in our bodies, let's explore an awareness exercise.

First, sit or lie in a comfortable position and take 3 deep breaths, slowing down with each breath. Perhaps close your eyes. Now, bring your awareness to your body and mentally scan your entire body for your strongest sensation. For example, it may be the pressure on your sit bones from sitting, or there may be an area of your body that feels discomfort and pain, as if calling for your attention. Whatever the sensation is, acknowledge it and stay with it for a moment.

Now, mentally scan your body but this time, become aware of your most subtle sensation. For example, it may be the spaces between your eyelashes, sensing your fingernails, etc. Stay with this subtle sensation. Now, bring your attention back to your strongest sensation and then back to your most subtle sensation and alternate between the 2 sensations for a few rounds. End with 5-10 long deep breaths.

Most people during this exercise experience a shift in their perception. Their strongest sensation often starts to soften and the more subtle sensation often becomes easier to sense.

Happy Summer everyone. Hope it is filled with so many peaceful and joyous moments. Take time to relax, unwind and shine!! Darlene Fair RMT,RYT owns and operates Kamloops Massage. ike many other natural oils, Rosehip oil has a range of beauty benefits for the skin, hair and nails. Rosehip oil absorbs quickly for a mess-free finish. It is naturally rich in Lycopene, a powerful antioxidant found in tomatoes and watermelon. It is rich in essential fatty acids, vitamins and antioxidants that are essential for healthy skin. It has essential fatty acids that help in regeneration of skin cells and repair of damaged skin tissue. Moreover, it is naturally rich in vitamin A. Research shows that this oil is effective in preventing premature ageing caused by sun exposure. The oil is also beneficial to prevent stretch marks if it is used on a pregnant woman’s belly.

Health & Skincare Benefits of Rosehip Oil

Rosehip oil offers several benefits, which include the following: • Corrects UV damage from the sun. • Helps in prevention of scars, burns and stretch marks • Treats fine lines and wrinkles • Hydrates dry skin • Great for treatment of eczema and psoriasis • Evens skin tone; awesome for overcoming hyper-pigmentation, age spots or other minor skin discolorations

Dry hair Transform your bad hair day into an amazing hair day, simply by warming up some Rosehip oil in a water bath that is not too hot, just nice to touch. Then massage it into your hair and scalp. Leave for about an hour and then wash thoroughly. You will be amazed to see the soft and revitalized hair on your head. Bye, bad hair days!

Dull hair If you want to bring the shine back into your locks, then Rosehip oil is definitely for you. Massage slightly warmed up Rosehip oil before you wash your hair and it will bring back the shine to treated, colored or dull hair. It’s ideal for adding bounce and silkiness to lifeless hair. Scar treatment Use pure Rosehip oil on stretch marks, age spots, hyper-pigmentation, burns and scars; its nourishing properties will speed up the healing process and hydrate and moisturize the skin.

Nourish your nails Rosehip oil can nourish and hydrate your brittle nails, making them stronger and healthier. Just massage your nails every evening for a week with Rosehip oil before going to sleep and see the wonderful difference it makes!

Make your skin glow Rosehip oil gives beautiful and natural glow to the skin when used regularly. Not only this oil helps to smooth fine lines and wrinkles and even up your skin tone, but also gives your skin beautiful and healthy glow! Try it, you will love the results. Just in case, if you find this oil too heavy for your skin, try adding only one or two drops to your daily moisturizer.

This oil is thus the answer to all your hair, skin and nail problems. Give it a try and you will love the results!

Driving Time Equals

Zen Time

T

By Kris Rae

here is often plenty of time while driving here, there and everywhere to contemplate life. People get on autopilot and have much time to think! Here is where one can choose to stew about things going wrong, increase stress and overwhelm, or choose to make this time calming and stress reducing!

10 ways to Zen the drive

1) Express Gratitude - Mentally list anything and anyone that has or has had a positive impact in your life. 2) Set Your Mood - Crank up the tunes and sing along, nice and loud! Preferably to something uplifting! This enhances the mood as well as encourages some deep breaths.

3) Mentally Point Out Everything - Red car, old sign, large tree, small dog - this technique relaxes and distracts the mind.

4) Dream Big - Talk inwardly or outwardly about what ways would be fun, exciting or peaceful to enhance work, home or life in general.

5) Play a Game - See how many times a sign, type of vehicle or a certain colour goes by.

6) Read License Plates - Notice patterns, words or sets of three characters. This is a good way to distract the mind.

7) Play Another Game - Using the letters on license plates, make up phrases starting with each letter on it. Playing such a game can be distracting and entertaining.

8) Open Your Eyes - Notice all of the good things that go by - even the smallest of details such as flowers, trees, blue sky, etc.

9) Deep Breathe - Bring in air through the nose and fill the belly, then slowly, slowly release.

10) Listen to Books on CD or MP3 - Especially helpful when there are limited opportunities during the day to read!

All these items provide something to occupy that busy mind with neutral or positive themes. This gives the body time to calm and relax - especially if there had been high adrenaline producing events already that day.

Try An “In Body” Experience!

By Marianne Ferguson

How often do you slip out of your body? When we don’t want to deal with something difficult we frequently lift partially out of our body until the issue is resolved. We are kind of there but not really there. This happens to many people and is a very common occurrence.

What is going on? We learn this technique as children and have plenty of opportunity to practice throughout childhood. As children, we commonly feel powerless when being reprimanded and attempts to defend ourselves frequently worsen the situation, so we can slip partially or fully out of the body until the ordeal is over. This becomes a learned response that can be with us our whole life and can be responsible for a loss of power to deal effectively with issues. With practice you can learn to feel when you are not fully in your body and you can watch others slip out too. Think of a time when something was difficult and you became vague and allowed things that you didn’t feel right about. Afterwards you might feel rather light-headed and it may take some time to fully return. That’s it! Watch a child who suddenly senses trouble. Their eyes glaze over and it seems they don’t hear you - Gone!

To be fully present and maintain personal power it is helpful to be in control of when you choose to leave your body or stay fully present. Below are a few tips to help you and your family.

Beginning at the top of the head smooth your hands slowly down your body and hold the feet while affirming that you want to be in this body fully experiencing all of life. Do this a few times per day, add to your daily practice and also when facing difficulties.

When in conflict with another or with children. Stop and have everyone do the above exercise to hold personal power before dealing with the difficult situation. Rub the bottoms of your feet with a stainless steel spoon while affirming that you want to be in this body fully experiencing all of life.

Where are you...

Sacrifice or Happiness? By Maggy Davidson

Everyone wants happy – primarily because if we are not happy, we are in sacrifice. That might be a triggering statement but the question is, for example - How many couples have you known who have stayed in a relationship “for the sake of their children”?

From the place of providing a stable sanctuary for a child, this appears to be the correct thing to do. However, to think a child is not aware of household stress, strife, or lack of happiness in the heart of one or both parents is a grievous mistake to make – for all concerned.

Children are very psychic and they absolutely know when the emotional atmosphere in the home is incorrect and usually, they think they caused it.

Staying in a relationship for the sake of the kids or for the sake of financial stability is just the wrong reason. Everyone involved can sense, see, smell, and taste when the atmosphere is not right. If one stays in a job or a relationship for reasons of emotional security or financial stability, they are in deceit. After all, when one looks at finances, money is just “stuff”. The spirit or soul is so much more important. We are here to prosper emotionally, spiritually, physically and mentally.

ers who seem to be on the same path, and often begin to write a script for them on how they might/should/will behave, live, love, want, and be. Life is wonderful at that point. The challenge is that we forgot to give the other person their script and they go about living their life. Since they don't know what their script says, and they do their own thing, we become annoyed when they are not behaving in the way we wanted. They are not living up to our expectations. Or, we are not living up to theirs.

However, if we can hold true to doing what makes our own heart sing and it happens to coincide with the desires of another, life is fabulous! Doing what makes your heart sing is imperative for the joy of all around you. Especially for you. If there is a lack of joy, contentment, love, (happy) in your life, start to look for it everywhere you can. If you are doing anything for any reason other than “it makes your heart sing”, then find another path. You are in sacrifice. Stuff is only stuff. It's your spirit that matters.

A healer with over 40 years’ experience. Maggy Davidson is the proprietor of Spirit Quest Books in Salmon Arm. This destination retail store offers services as well as unique jewellery, crystals, gifts. For more information on Maggy and her store, check out www.spiritquestbooks.com Worth the visit!

Before any of us came here, we signed a contract. Many will say that we actually wrote it. Then we are born, come into the physical realm and immediately forget what we agreed to. How do we remember?

Fritz Perls is the author of the Gestault Prayer: “I do my thing and you do your thing. I am not in this world to live up to your expectations and you are not here to live up to mine. You are you and I am I. And if by chance we find each other, it's beautiful.”

What great advice this is. On the surface, it can be taken as being selfish; or dig a little deeper and it can be taken as “Do what makes your heart sings.”

We all came into this world, having written and then signed a contract, agreeing to what we might accomplish and learn in this lifetime. And then, we are born and we forget. We are here on our own mission, with our own agenda, and as gregarious humans, we wish for companionship along the way. We remember being joined with another (and if we have forgotten Source, we can remember being one with our "womb mate" or our “birth mother”. It's lonely in this world, so we seek others along the way. Yet there is not another who signed the same contract. We do what we do, and watch others do what they do. Companionship is so attractive, and we long for it. We meet oth-

What is Sciatica? And do I have it?

A

By Paul Roberts

s osteopathic practitioners, one of the more common and frequently treatable conditions that we see is Sciatica. Sciatica is defined as the compression or irritation of the sciatic nerve. Symptoms of sciatica are usually just down one leg, though can present in both sides when more serious. These symptoms include: pins and needles/numbness/weakness/shooting pain in the low back, buttock, back of the thigh, leg and foot.

One of the most confusing things for patients about sciatica is that it merely describes your symptoms rather than being a diagnosis. The sciatic nerve starts in the lumbar spine, and is formed when the smaller nerves which pass out between our lower vertebrae and sacrum form into one large thick nerve, approximately as thick as your finger. This nerve passes through the pelvis and down the leg. It’s like a highway for information – from the brain to the legs (i.e movement) and from legs to the brain (sensory, pain). Any compression or inflammation along that nerve can affect the nerve signals, causing symptoms of sciatica.

For example: • Lumbar spine disc herniation or bulge – when a disc herniates or “slips,” it can leak its fluid onto the nerve roots of the sciatic nerve, causing inflammation • Lumbar spine stenosis – this is when the space the spinal cord is in gets smaller and compressed • Piriformis Syndrome – the sciatic nerve lies on the belly of the piriformis muscle, deep in the glutes. Tightness of this muscle can cause the compression of the sciatic nerve. • Local inflammation – any injury in the area, even arthritis, can cause local inflammation resulting to chemical irritation of the sciatic nerve. • Pregnancy – the weight of the baby often alters the spinal curves of the mother which can lead to compression of the nerve roots of the sciatic nerve.

How do I help myself? If you are experiencing symptoms of sciatica, do not just treat the symptoms. Treat the cause! You can receive help from your doctor, osteopathic practitioners, chiropractors, RMT’s, Physios, etc. They will help you to identify the cause of your problems and help you to develop a management strategy that will help your body to heal.

But don’t just rely on them! There are lots of things that you can do: • Posture, posture, posture! By sitting/standing correctly with good posture, we can reduce the load on our discs, joints and muscles. • Stretch our hamstrings, piriformis and low back muscles. • Drink lots of water to help rehydrate our tissues daily. • Avoid inflammatory foods such as sugar and caffeine that are known to increase inflammation.

By Cathy Lidster

ecently I participated in an online mentoring group regarding mindful eating. Unexpected side benefits such as weight loss, jaw alignment, and health improvements occurred among us as a result of digging deep into the work. It was a beautiful example of the adage - Help others to help yourself. Mindfulness is a mental state achieved by focusing one's awareness on the present moment, on one's thoughts, feelings and sensations without judgment. It is particularly helpful when used as a therapeutic technique.

it gently and slowly to different parts of your mouth and notice all the sensations - taste, temperature, texture and moisture.

4. Chew verrrrrry slowwwly. This has many benefits for your digestive system as well as your weight. Do you ever wolf down your food so fast you don't even taste it? When you eat quickly, you do not give your brain a chance to tell you when you are full! Hello? How did these hips get here?

Mindfulness...

One bite at a time

Many people strive to achieve this state through formal means such as yoga, Feldenkrais, meditation and a variety of intuitive trainings. Others tap into mindfulness when they are gardening, walking or running. I am trying to achieve this state when playing tennis and golf but it may take many lifetimes to reach it. Practicing mindful eating creates wonderful lifelong benefits such as weight loss, better health, feelings of fullness and satisfaction, more pleasure around food, and, ultimately, more selfcompassion.

Here are five simple tips

1 . Put down your food or fork after every single bite. Habits of eating actually begin with the reach of the hand and have nothing to do with hunger. Watch yourself go into autopilot with your hands. If necessary, sit on your hands between bites in order to convince your brain that you would really like to change this habit.

2. WAIT! As you bring the tiny morsel of food to your lips, pause to smell it, really look at it, and anticipate its experience. If it's something especially tasty like chocolate, you can turn it into a game and see how long you can wait for it. How long is a nanosecond again?

3. Prolong the bite - food foreplay. Hold the food on your tongue for as long as you can, move

5 Concentrate on the Un-bite - the letting go stage. Biting and chomping are aggressive actions - necessary when you are being chased or have to eat and run. It is time to choose differently. Enjoy. Enjoy. Enjoy Your Food and everything about the experience of eating. Otherwise what is the point? A fun way to try these steps is with a friend so you can give each other feedback. Allow at least an hour to eat a meal together. You will reach your fullness sensation long before the time is up and well before your plate is empty. It is time to let go of the ingrained notion that it is a sin to leave food on your plate. Start with smaller portions, savour the flavour, and embrace sharing your leftovers with your pet or compost.

Horticultural Therapy Why Gardening is Therapeutic By Ingrid Davis

If you haven't discovered gardening yet, it's time that you try it. In other than a vocational context, there is no better activity of inclusivity than gardening. To garden it does not matter what our age, gender, abilities, culture, learning’s (formal or informal), spiritual affiliation, state of health, personal relationship to others, or social status is. Gardening invites all participants without discrimination. Whether done indoors or outdoors, it is an activity that is adaptable, intergenerational, creative, and healthy.

Gardening provides us with a perspective of our interconnectedness with Nature. It teaches: Nature’s energy flows and life cycles; biodiversity; nurturing; patience; gratitude for food; appreciation of beauty; independence; integration; and wonder. Plant life cycles provide metaphors for our own life cycles: fertilizing; seeding; germinating; budding; blossoming; growing; maturing and dying.

Connecting to Nature by interacting with plants can be active, passive or sensual. Gardening stimulates our senses of: sight, smell, taste, hearing and touch. It can evoke memories, provide beautiful sights and scents. It can stimulate conversations, encouraging social connections or simply provide a quiet spiritual experience alone. Best of all, gardening can provide us with healthy physical exercise.

Unveiling Buried E m o t i o n s By Stephanie Banks

n order to unveil our buried emotions, we must appreciate the clouds that may have formed. These clouds are our clues to our own consciousness. Within our consciousness, there are years of unwanted filth that is in need of cleansing. The filth is simply residue of unacknowledged emotions that have been swept under the carpet of our souls. This carpet must be lifted and discarded in order for the clouds to lift. The sun will then shine freely and continuously, providing warmth and freedom, freedom from burdens, freedom from regrets, freedom from judgment not only of others, but also ourselves.

With freedom comes honesty; honesty to our higher selves and this keeps our hearts ticking. As you unleash each buried feeling that lies beneath your own personal carpet, take the time and energy to sort through these emotions and allow these emotions the freedom of expression. If tears must fall in order to release this moment back to the universe, then please allow the tears to fall. If anger sets in, acknowledge how anger feels within your physical self and also within your heart. Our hearts are a reflection of our spirits. Do not, under any circumstances, enable your emotions to take control over your intentions. Prior to revealing your buried emotions, it is suggested to set your intentions.

If we took some time to garden or experience a garden we would reap the many health benefits being reported by recent scientific studies on Horticultural Therapy. Simple acts such as tending to potted plants or a garden, viewing nature, walking in parks, forests, natural landscapes, or partaking in outdoor activities in green spaces can make a world of difference to our physical, mental, emotional, social and spiritual health.

Not only will our health improve but our relationships with others will naturally improve. The ripple effect from enhanced people connections through gardening is undeniable.

Direct connection with Nature and plants is vital to our wellbeing. Horticultural Therapy is a means of maintaining that vital connection. Gardening is the most common means through which horticultural therapy services can be administered.

The beauty of gardening is that it can be a self-directed health activity or one that is therapeutically guided. Horticultural Therapy when applied through a trained practitioner can be adaptive, creative and administered as frequently as needed.

Ingrid Davis has a certificate in Horticultural Therapy. She is available to consult, practice, and plan; design & construct healing gardens. Plants and Nature provide a wonderful medium in which to practice physical, cognitive, emotional, social and spiritual well-being. ecosys@telus. net 30 www.InteriorWellness.com | Summer 2015

“I hereby stand before my buried emotions with enthusiasm to deliver them to a higher understanding. Through love and compassion, I will not judge others or myself as I process my feelings and acknowledge their existence. I will allow myself the freedom to laugh, cry or scream where needed, but I will not enable my emotions to bring physical or emotional harm to either others or myself. Once I have acknowledged each emotion that lies beneath my veil of uncertainty, I will ask the universe to grant me the strength and trust to release it back to the universe forever.” Stephanie Banks, author of A Soulful Awakening is a spiritual mentor, speaker and medium. Finding Wellness through Connecting with Nature and Animals By Liz Mitten Ryan

Have you ever experienced a retreat where the teachers and healers have four legs, fur, feathers branches, needles, flowers and crystalline form? We are talking about horses, dogs, cats, a steer and many magical trees, rock forms and wildflowers that adorn the landscape. ‘Gateway 2’ was an inspiration given to Liz before she had fully explored the forests and meadows, hills and lakes belonging to the 320 acres of sacred land that had called her there, almost 16 years ago. When choosing a name, it just popped into her head and felt right. It wasn’t until seven years and four award–winning books later, that it actually made sense.

Ashcroft Wellness & Music Festival

July 18 - 19, 2015 Ashcroft Heritage Park 600 Block, Railway Ave. Ashcroft BC

A geomancer and shaman appeared to help explore the land that had called Liz and the horses to share in its story. Looking through their expert eyes, it was found that there was significant dragon energy present, appearing as the rocky backs of hills and natural wooden sculptures throughout the landscape. Dragon energy encourages manifestation and metamorphosis. There were large numbers of double trees that the crystalline energy of the earth had nourished. Underground rivers of quartz, fluorite and chalcopyrite crisscrossed the landscape and vortices; gateways and portals to other realms were found. Yes, Gateway 2, or ‘To’ was the perfect name and those entering the gateway experienced another world.

When retreats were offered, people from all over the world visited them and the stories of their transformation were gathered. Somehow, the horses could sense the energy fields around people and they knew how to shift the energy and release it. They shared the patterns they would use with Liz and many of the participants who were sensitive to the communication, and a healing language and system appeared. Sometimes the horses would work alone and often in groups using sacred geometric patterns to change and release the energy. Sometimes they would physically touch the person, rubbing or breathing on a specific area. Whatever the horses were inspired to do; life-changing realizations and healings often resulted.

Wellness is the state of the natural world and can be rediscovered through taking time to reconnect with nature. Animals live in harmony with the life force that is the essence and perfection of all creation. To be healed, we simply have to reawaken to and remember that magical place.
