What is your dream, your vision for the future? As we come into this physical realm, our soul has a specific purpose to fulfill in our lifetime. As a child, we inherit the beliefs, stories and perspectives of our parents. This conditions our way of moving through the world. We carry this biological lineage within our souls which includes the unfulfilled dreams and promises of our ancestors. For many of us, our parent’s dream was to survive and work hard, which was fuelled by fear and inherent unworthiness. As a soul, we also come with our own imprint or spiritual lineage. This includes promises, agreements, contracts and vows we have made in other lives. As we map our prevailing themes of fear, unworthiness & disconnection we see our repetitive patterns that encourage us to loop in our old stories which hold claim to us. At this point in history, many individuals can no longer live within these limited paradigms and maintain the silent agreements from their past. There comes a time when we become aware we are living someone else's dream.

As we intentionally choose to no longer source from our spiritual or biological lineage, we are able to envision and co-create our own dream. As our awareness and perceptions shift, we heal and transform. We recapitulate where we are going and where we have been. Reassessing daily and re-envisioning what fulfillment is we are able to tap into the vision at our soul’s core. We create meaningful situations out of intent and choice. As we find our voice within our own voice, we find our song and tap into the voices of our becoming. Let’s reconnect to our soul’s vision beyond our future to our destiny. Everything is a result of a vision. What is your dream for this lifetime? Tania’s mission is supporting personal empowerment & transformation. Life's Dance Letting The Inner Wisdom Lead By Kris Rae

In dance with a partner, one person leads and the other follows. In order to be in synchronization with each other, they must work together and one must follow, trust and relinquish control. Although the following partner gives up some control, they have a very important role in the success of their partnership and are most successful when they keep themselves strong, mindful and aware of the subtle cues they are given.

It doesn’t really matter, in dance, which of the partners takes the lead, but it makes rational sense that it should be the one with clearer outlook and perspective. In terms of dance, this could mean the taller one, putting society norms aside! When a duo has faith and is very much in tune and aware of each other, they will be stronger and will move together with ease.

Consider partner dancing as an analogy for the relationship to the inner wisdom everyone has access to. A person finding their power by following their inner guidance may seem counter-intuitive. However, by following that guidance and relinquishing the control they feel they have, they actually connect to their real, authentic self. They get to their core and to the reason they are here. This inner guidance is from a broader perspective that our minds can’t always comprehend. It is that gut feeling or following what feels right to each individual. It is having trust and staying positive. This wisdom has the higher perspective that can’t always be seen or anticipated and thus, it follows, that the inner guidance is best in the lead.

If a person gives up control over the outcomes around them and follows their inner guidance, their life will be more authentic and they will be stronger knowing that they are safe, guided and navigating the dance floor of life beautifully! Kris Rae teaches quick and easy stress relief and relaxation techniques for all ages in classes in Kamloops plus develops self-healing tools and guided meditations for home use.

The Many Benefits of

Chinese Cupping Traditional Chinese medicine brings to mind acupuncture and the use of natural herbs as healing remedies. Cupping is a lesserknown treatment that is also part of Oriental medicine, one that can provide an especially pleasant experience.

Cupping is the term applied to a technique that uses small glass cups as suction devices that are placed on the skin. There are several ways that a practitioner can create the suction in the cups. One method involves soaking a cotton ball in rubbing alcohol, lighting it on fire, placing it in the cup momentarily, then putting the cup immediately against the skin. Flames are never used near the skin, and are only a means to create the heat that causes the suction within the cups. By Jennifer Larsen, R.Ac.

Once the suction has occurred, the cups can be gently moved across the skin (often referred to as "gliding cupping). The suction in the cups causes the skin and superficial muscle layer to be lightly drawn into the cup. Cupping is much like the inverse of massage - rather than applying pressure to muscles, it uses gentle pressure to pull them upward. For most patients, this is a particularly relaxing and relieving sensation. Once suctioned, the cups are generally left in place for about ten minutes while the patient relaxes. Cupping is often combined with acupuncture in one treatment, but it can also be used alone. The suction and negative pressure provided by cupping can loosen muscles, encourage blood flow, and sedate the nervous system. Cupping is used to relieve back and neck pains, stiff muscles, anxiety, fatigue, migraines, cough and congestion. Cupping stimulates a release of toxins, clears blockages, and refreshes veins and arteries within these four inches of tissue. Overall, cupping is an incredible therapy to improve circulation, increase oxygenation and tissue delivery and decrease patterns of inflammation in the body.

SELF REFLECTION By Helen Whittle

Have you ever wondered what it may be that is holding you back from achieving your dreams and passions? Everyone has goals and hopes for their life. Many times these are buried deep inside us. Perhaps it is fear that prevents a person from living an authentic life or worry over other people's opinions. It may be time to drop the mask and find out who you truly are. To really express who we are to ourselves and the world, we must first become aware of exactly who we are at the core of our being. Allow yourself authentic expression and self reflection. One of the ways to achieve this is through the art of writing in a journal. The following may help with this:

• Meditate to quieten your thoughts. • Visualize what your passion and dreams look like. • Visualize living that dream. • Write down the steps to achieve this dream. • Be totally honest with yourself. • Write the changes you can make in your life to allow passion to flow. • Trust the messages your heart is giving you, listen to these messages. • Be aware of feelings; does something make you feel happy, peaceful, relaxed? • Tune into that deep emotional center of you where your innermost wisdom resides. • Release old programming that has not served you well.

Stop your New Year Resolutions... It’s time for a Fitness Revolution By Kathleen Wright

Does this sound familiar: You committed to losing weight, you formulated a plan, you set SMART goals and you’re feeling optimistic…again. If you find yourself making the same resolutions year after year then it’s time to revolt. Take this revolution quiz to predict your chances of success: 1. Are you setting long-term goals? 2. Do you visualize your ideal self on a regular basis? 3. Are you focused on where you’re going instead of where you’ve been? 4. Do you talk to your friends about your problems? If you answered yes to these questions then you have set yourself up for failure.

WHAT??! You may be confused because you’ve been taught the opposite but you wouldn’t be reading this if your resolutions had worked for you in the past. It’s time … to revolt.

Here are your Top 4 ‘Revolution’ Success Tips

1. Focus on short-term goals. Any goal over 90 days leads to procrastination; it is simply too far in the future to have any bearing on our current lives. 2. Be realistic about obstacles and plan for them. Imagining a perfect future can lead to disappointment when things are not as perfect as you’d hoped.

Changing paths and taking risks may at first seem very scary but it can also be very empowering. New lessons will present themselves and lead to unbelievable growth if you do not allow fear to overtake you. Remember that whatever you believe about yourself on the inside will be what you will manifest on the outside. By knowing who you are and what you honestly want in your life, positive energy flow will bring your life into alignment with your heart and your true authentic self will emerge. To help clients find their true self has fueled Helen to delve deeper into universal energy that connects us all. Helen Whittle RHN/CMI. info@askhelen.ca www.askhelen.ca

3. Look back at where you’ve come from to highlight how much you’ve already achieved. It’s motivating. Focusing on where you are going can highlight the gap between where you are and how far you have to go. It’s discouraging. 4. Journal about your feelings. It allows your brain to make sense of things. Talking about your problems does not relieve your stress about them and can lead to heightened negative emotions. Exercise is essential for a healthy lifestyle and has incredible benefits for your body but successful weight loss happens in the mind, not the body. When will you begin your fitness revolution?

Heartbeats Fitness offers a unique approach to fitness through online and inperson programs run by Kat, a health coach, fitness consultant and certified personal trainer based in the Kamloops area. www.heartbeatsfitness.com Winter 2016 | www.InteriorWellness.com 5

How to Have

Whether you are a pre, peri or post-menopausal woman, it is very important to balance your hormones. Historically, research has been mostly male oriented as there was a tendency to consider the female hormone system as a peripheral add-on. In actuality it is central to everything about how women’s bodies work and should be considered immediately when any physical or emotional problem occurs Many women are not well educated about their bodies and how to balance hormones. For example, post-menopausal women have been conditioned to think that hormones are no longer important but this is simply not true. Low testosterone contributes to heart disease. Low progesterone means you won’t grow bone. A lot of women in nursing homes suffer with depression, memory and mental clarity problems. These could be symptoms of low estrogen.

What can you do to take care of your hormonal system?

1. Eat Organic Food

Many pesticides are xenoestrogens – they are artificial but act like estrogens in the body. Estrogen gives the order to grow. Every steer, dairy, chicken and egg farmer knows this. That is how they fatten their animals and get them to grow and produce more and faster than nature designs. We also fatten up this way.

2. Get Plenty of Enzymes

By eating raw or lightly cooked vegetables. Ovaries love enzymes. Avoid microwaving vegetables as that kills the enzymes.

3. Avoid Prescription Drugs

6 www.InteriorWellness.com | Winter 2016

Also avoid synthetic birth control. These can clog the liver so that it cannot filter out the excess estrogens. Many women are on antidepressants. This is like painting the ceiling to fix the leak. Antidepressants do not solve the underlying cause. Ask your physician to check your hormones before you make your decision about whether to take these drugs.

Happy Hormones

4. Support Your Thyroid

By Cathy Lidster

Eat iodine rich foods. But be selective in your choices: Inorganic and pharmaceutical iodine concoctions can be more harmful than helpful. Unadulterated Lugol’s solution, sea vegetables, cranberries, navy beans, strawberries, and organic cheese are some good sources.

5. Support Your Adrenal Glands

If you are post-menopausal or have had surgical menopause (ovaries removed) this is a must. Avoid sugar. Adrenals like whole food B Complex (nutritional yeast), and potassium rich foods such as sea salt, almonds, avocados and brazil nuts and licorice (the herb not the candy). Many people crave licorice. This is the adrenals talking. Try licorice tea.

6. Keep Your Liver Clean

See a professional before doing a cleanse but you can sip lemon or pure cranberry juice and eat garlic daily, for a start.

7. Eat Whole Foods and Whole Food Concentrates

I do not recommend random buying of herbs or isolated fractionated supplements. The Resilience Advantage

TM

By Kent Watson

The instant my right ankle snapped, I knew two things: I was going to be alright; and everything happens for a reason. I lay back on the grass and began practicing a resilience-building skill called the Heart-Focused BreathingTM Technique (HFB). In minutes, my wife, Louise, and three friends arrived to hear me say: “I broke my ankle.” “I don’t know what to do.” Louise responded. My mountain rescue training surfaced: “Splint it.” Louise’s paramedic skills took over. “I can’t believe how calm you are,” said Tony. “How are we going to get you out of here?” “Frances and Brad ride out and call 911,” I answered.

“Resilience is the capacity to prepare for, recover from and adapt in the face of stress, challenge or adversity” (HeartMath Institute, 2014). When resilient, we have the capacity to remain calmer, think more clearly and have better control our emotions. Basically, we function in four domains of resilience: emotional, mental, physical and spiritual. Not surprisingly, stress reduces resilience, especially in the emotional realm. This impacts the other domains of resilience. The quality of our emotions can either deplete or renew us. Think of the last time you got really angry and how you might have felt fatigued or drained several hours later. Compare that to an uplifting feeling you experienced after meeting a good friend.

Emotions can dramatically affect our hormonal systems and heart rates either to our detriment or benefit. They also affect what is called our coherence, our ideal operating state, sort of like being in sync. Coherence is critical in building resilience. Coherence occurs when the “heart, mind, emotions and body are all working in sync.” Remarkably, the neurosignals that flow from the heart to the brain affect the brain centers responsible for thinking, thought regulation, reaction times, feelings and behaviours. When we are coherent, we access our practical intuition. This permits us to recall forgotten past or subconscious learning. This allows us to make quick “intuitive” decisions, often bypassing the thinking process. We can also pick up environmental information like magnetic fields or sense information that cannot be explained. Intuitive intelligence is rapid and takes place before we are mentally aware as to what is happening. We are already moving in a positive direction to meet whatever challenge is coming towards us. The Heart-Focused BreathingTM Technique, easy to learn, helps us shift into a more coherent state. It is the starting point for other techniques that can be employed depending on the circumstances you find yourself in.

This in-the-moment practice enabled me to intuitively direct my own rescue. My calmness radiated to the others who responded to their tasks with greater efficiency. It limited the pain to a tolerable level. In our fast-paced, complex world, we need skills like these to help us successfully navigate through all the changing landscapes or circumstances we find ourselves in. To live with increased poise, dignity and clarity, it is so important that we try and build and sustain resilience on a daily basis

Self Improvement...

Is it working? In part, yes. Individuals in our Western Society are more aware than ever before. However, there is a small part of this equation that is missing. We take self-improvement courses. What we seek is Self APPROVEMENT: Approval of who we are.

We are wanting to be correct, to have others love and appreciate us, to live in community rather than isolation, to get along better in the world. Do you wake in the night re-hashing conversations, blaming and judging yourself for your action or inaction in various circumstances? If you do, there is a key point we all need to remember: we are all perfectly imperfect! You can give approval for Self when you know that in any moment you did the best you could with the knowledge available in that moment. Where are you in your Self Approvement (self approval)?

or...

Self Approvement? By Maggy Davidson

Approval of who we are.”

Self Improvement and self help concepts have their roots in 1859 when the first books were published to instruct readers on solving personal problems.

The Industrial Revolution created the need for instruction. Prior to the industrial revolution young boys were at their mother’s feet until age 8, after which they went to work with their father. A young boy came to know who his father was and how to be in various circumstances, how to be a man. Young girls remained with their mothers, learning how to manage the household, planting, tending home fires, etc. learning how to be a woman.

The Industrial Revolution brought employment in factories and city living; everyone went to work regardless of age. Familial examples of how to behave in various circumstances were no longer available, hence the need for self improvement books to be published to tell of correct manners and behavior.

The idea of self improvement and self help books has become more popular since the second world war – which is when our culture changed markedly. Family units now had basic needs looked after and were no longer in survival mode. There was the opportunity for education to learn acceptable ways of being in daily life. With Emily Post’s books on manners, society in the Western World became more aware. Today, names like Wayne Dyer, Louise Hay, and the Dalai Lama are familiar self-help authors. We strive to be better individuals, to become human beings rather than human doings.

A New Year: A New Perspective

The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali

By Nancy Whitticase

Yoga sutra 1-2: Yoga's citta vrtti nirodhah

The restraint of the modification of the mind stuff is yoga. This yoga sutra of Patanjali teaches us that what you do with your mind matters, and the importance of making friends with our inner world. Like most people, we walk around with a 3 ring circus going on in your head. This mental hurricane, if left unchecked, can show up in our life as stress, depression, anxiety, sleeping disorders, disease, tension, and addiction.

These Yoga Sutras of Patanjali traditionally are the corner stone of yoga and have more to do with the flexibility of our minds and less about the body. How different would our world be if we realized that the actual change we are looking for is not outside of us but something inside our own mind. Perception is projection; life is 10% of what happens and 90% how you react to it. Pain is inevitable, but suffering is optional. So often we are not responding directly to anything but our interpretation of it. The yoga sutra teaches us, "If you can control the rising of the mind into ripples, you will experience yoga. The entire outside world is based on your thoughts and mental attitude. So if you can have control over your thought forms and change them as you want, you are not bound by the outside world" If we change our thoughts, we can our lives and from this, we will change the world. For thousands of years, the yogis have probed the mysteries of the mind and consciousness. These 196 Yoga Sutras are the philosophy of the practice of yoga that helps us on our path of living a life with more love, joy, compassion and purpose.

12 Questions

for Your Best Year Ever!

By Cate Baio

The winter season is here and with it comes dreams of a bright New Year full of promise to improve upon the years of past. Unfortunately, what often happens is that resolutions are made without reflection or a plan, and sadly, those New Year’s resolutions can melt away long before the snow does.

What people are often looking for is more. More time for themselves, more time for their families and children, more time for what’s important. In order to do this, it is essential to take time to reflect. Reflect on the past year, acknowledge and repeat what worked, let go what didn’t work, and make new choices for this year. Following are some questions that have helped many men and women to create more realistic and sustainable plans for the New Year. You may find it helpful to post these answers in a place where they can be seen daily (in an office, on a fridge, or on a bathroom mirror for example).

1 What learning took place this past year? 2 What worked? 3 What didn’t work? 4 What needs to go? 5 What choices can be made instead? 6 What brings true joy? 7 What part will gratitude play? 8 What creates a thriving environment? 9 What’s draining? 10 What is the vision for 2016? 11 What’s on the bucket list for 2016? 12 What steps will make this vision a reality?

You might find find that by following a practice like this you are able to enter into the new year with less stress and more joy. Reflection and deliberate planning brings mindfulness and it is only through this awareness that change is possible. By discovering what’s important and what brings joy into your life, you can commit to what makes you thrive and have the best year ever. Happy New Year!

Reading the Hearts Animals possess expansive hearts, minds and spirits. They experience a full range of emotions, just as humans do. While each animal is unique, there exists a universal body language that expresses certain ranges of feelings and needs: called calming signals.

Calming signals are body gestures and postures that animals of all species (including humans) use to communicate with others. Learning to read and interpret your animal friends’ behaviour and expressions can help you deepen your relationship, overcome misunderstandings and help them lead more peaceful and fulfilling lives.

Yawning

Yawning indicates tension in the body. Tension may be positive (excited to go to the park) or negative (anxious about getting a bath). When tension arises, breathing becomes more shallow and infrequent. Yawning releases tension and brings much needed oxygen into the body.

Yawning –tension in the face. It is different than an “I am sleepy” yawn.

Scratching, licking (or fidgeting)

Scratching or licking also releases tension in the body. A cat licks her paws to release tension after she lashes out at a friend in the before-dinner excitement. A dog sits down to scratch immediately after hearing a loud sound that startles him.

14 www.InteriorWellness.com | Winter 2016

Licking – they have suddenly stopped to lick, and are not getting really comfy for a nice long grooming session. Stiff body, etc.

& Minds of Animals Part 1

By Tamryn Fudge

This is not a calming signal version of licking. Too comfy and relaxed.

Turning the head or body

Averting the eyes, turning the head and turning the body away demonstrate increasing levels of discomfort or concern with someone or something. A dog turns his head away from the friendly stranger attempting to pet him, politely showing his discomfort with the greeting. A cat looks away from her lady as she says good-bye before leaving for work, withdrawing from the exchange that makes her sad.

Turning away – concern in the eyes, discomfort shown. Calming signals provide indicators of your animal friends’ feelings and needs, so that you can better understand and support him or her. Part 2 of this series will explore the more intense body gesture expressions – stress indicators. Tamryn Fudge is a dog trainer specializing in aggression and behaviour problems as well as everyday issues and puppies. Private session dog training programs available. www.infinitedog.ca tamryn@infinitedog.ca 250-573-1744.

tion, is a group of species living or growing together in the same area (infinitesimal to planetary scales). Species or groups are comprised of individuals, each uniquely contributing to their kind. A healthy human community could do well to mimic nature’s communities. So here is a simple idea to promote connection to Nature and community. The concept might be labelled “Adopt a Gardener” or “Connect a gardener to a garden”. I prefer the latter because it uses a word I am fond of; “connect”! How wonderful would it be to start a program within the community whereby those who have a piece of Mother Earth (a yard/farm) were to be connected with those who do not but, who have a passion for working in the earth. For example, a homeowner can no longer physically garden, but yearns to continue growing flowers and/or vegetables. A passionate gardener needs a place to garden. Each person contributes their willingness to form a respectful and trusting partnership; to help realize and fulfill their personal needs; and to share the tangible and intangible benefits from the garden. And through this synergy, they start to build community.

Healthy Communities it all begins in my backyard! By Ingrid Davis

Those of you who have followed my introductory articles on Horticultural Therapy have been introduced to the building evidence of our modern societies’ disconnect with the natural world. We are losing the will to immerse, observe, and learn from our wisest mentor – “Mother Nature”. Nature teaches us to strive for balance, not necessarily equality; that obtaining balance is not always fair and equal; and, that the “whole” cannot work with the concept of “separate from” or individualism. We cannot be separate from Nature and remain healthy. Modern industrialized civilizations’ preoccupation with individualism and equality has tipped the scales of natural balance. Nature consists of nested ecosystems all simultaneously interconnected through competition (sharing finite resources); synergies; co-operation; hierarchies; dominance; and so on. Within an ecosystem, these interconnections are not always happy outcomes for individuals or species, but they are mutually beneficial to maintain an ecological balance. Each individual component is integrally connected to ensure the whole system functions in a healthy manner. Some of you may be more familiar with the term community, which is synonymous with ecosystem. A community, by defini-

The permutations of connections that could be facilitated from this very simple concept could mimic the endless connections to be found in Nature. Individual behaviour is mirrored in community behaviour, which is nested in regional, national and international behaviour. Let us all start a healthy connection to Nature in our own backyards! Ingrid Davis has a Certificate in Horticultural Therapy complimenting her BSc Forestry Degree. She has designed & built healing gardens. Plants and Nature provide a wonderful medium in which to practice physical, cognitive, emotional, social and spiritual well-being. Email: ecosys@telus.net

You are not Alone

By Therese Dorer

We find ourselves in challenging times upon our Earth, inundated with fear, information, and politics, and bombarded with stories near and far. It is easy to be overwhelmed by the external stimulus that is sent our way via social media and news media. Perhaps we are left feeling hopeless and small in the wake of the earth’s situation. In my role as a Spiritual Consultant, I have the privilege to connect with Spirit for clients in meditation circles, and in my personal revere, and I am constantly amazed and delighted by the support we have from the invisible realms. We are not alone, we have the love and wisdom of Spirit Guides, Angels and Wise Ones to guide and teach us, we need only be open to their messages and love.

It is my experience to access this wisdom and love we need only take some time in quiet meditation, walk in nature, take time to be with our animal friends, dog’s cats or horses notice the signs we are given each day. Taking time for mindfulness will augment and support you in all areas of your life. As we are in the dark of winter, it is a wonderful opportunity to mirror the season and go into the quiet. Think of the bear that hibernates in the winter months to emerge in the spring to a new world. This metaphor can support our journey as we are encouraged in winter to allow some quiet time to seep into our consciousness and allow ourselves to emerge from this stillness and revere refreshed and ready for spring and the New Year.

We are moving into the New Year of 2016 which in numerology comes to a year of 9 the significance of this is completion. In this year we are encouraged to notice what we would like to complete what needs to be released this year to allow for new wonders we will move into in the year of 2017 which will be the year of 1 new beginning.

Letting go of material things we no longer need, which clutter our closets, garages and homes, letting go of emotional baggage that clutters our mind, body and soul. Letting go can be refreshing as it allows room for new and refreshing ideas, creativity and adventure. Finally I encourage you to ask for the support you need from the invisible realms, opening up to the love, light and truth that is there for you to receive. Enjoy this winter season and prepare for the beauty and glory of spring. Therese Dorer works as a Spiritual Consultant in Kamloops. Her work includes mediumship connecting families with their loved ones who have passed over; Shamanic healing practices; workshops and private sessions. A Well Deserved Rest “So the roots are harvested and in the cooler?” “Yep” “And you finished mulching the garlic” “That’s right”

By J. Ashton Sweetnam

The full realization washed over Ian and I. Our farming season was over. Of course there are always projects to be done, but for the most part we had earned our winters rest.

The baby’s yell from the bedroom reminded us of our new responsibilities, far beyond the scope of our workload of previous years. Jasper had been a little bundle in the spring, bouncing about in the carrier as I worked. Now he is a little boy who toddles about, pulling up any miscreant vegetables that block his path. His love of the activity and sheer dirtiness of fieldwork has reaffirmed for us that this is a path worth following.

Just because there is a vegetable farm out your front door doesn’t make you immune to the ease of eating peanut butter sandwiches for lunch. Jasper now serves as our moment-to-moment reminder of the importance of our work. We try to take the time to sit down for our colorful, carefully prepared meals because we are creating the world that we want him to live in with our every action and decision. Ashton is a farmer who attends the Kamloops Farmers Market every Saturday throughout the summer to sell her organic produce with her partner Ian Hart and son Jasper. Roots Up! Scrumptious Stuffed Squash

What I like about stuffed squash is that I never have to do a run to the store in order to make it. In the fall and winter I generally have all of the ingredients that I need in the house already. I often just use the previous days leftovers as filling. It is a very flexible and forgiving dish that can be made to suit the tastes and resources of every family. Ingredients 1 acorn squash

(although you can really use pretty much any squash that strikes your fancy)

2 to 3 cups of filling

Filling 1 to 2 cups vegetables

(Onions, mushrooms, green beans, zucchini, peppers, greens etc)

• 1/2 to 1 cup meat or other protein

(I favour grass fed ground beef, but you can work with whatever you happen to have)

• 1/2 cup cooked grains

(barley, quinoa, millet, rice)

• 1/2 to 1 cup shredded cheese

• 1 to 3 teaspoons herbs or spices

Cooking Directions

1. Preheat the oven to 375°F. Slice the squash in half from stem to root and scoop out the seeds.

2. Oil the halves, sprinkle with salt, pepper and herbs, and place the squash halves cut-side-down in a baking dish. Roast the squash until soft and tender when poked with a fork, about 45 minutes. Will vary depending on squash used.

3. Prepare the filling while the squash roasts. Simmer onions and garlic in a pan with butter or oil until onions are caramelized. Add mushrooms and peppers, cook for a few more minutes before adding any other chopped vegetables. Cook any raw meat in a separate pan, and then when they are fully cooked, combine all the ingredients in a bowl. Add herbs and spices, salt to taste. 4. Turn the cooked squash halves over and divide the filling between the halves. 5. Sprinkle with cheese and bake for another 15 to 20 minutes until both are hot and bubbly. Serve immediately.

Understanding Adversity in Life By Sri Madhuji

Many times we ask these questions: What is the purpose of suffering? Is God punishing us? Do only bad people suffer? Why would a righteous person suffer?

To understand the answers to these questions, we must raise to a higher level and see from a broader perspective the function of universal laws. One such law says that our Universe exists only in motion. Without motion, there would be no mass, thereby no time and no physical existence. How does motion occur?

According to science, movement occurs when two opposing forces interact. There cannot be any motion without this interaction. e.g. If you place a stone in your hand, then that will have a force equal to the weight of the hand. Then the hand will exert an equal force in opposite direction to hold the stone. So motion, which is two opposing forces, is essential for existence. This process is called the law of duality. It must be understood and accepted as a universal law of life.

Now, let us see how this law applies to our life. When we ponder and apply this law of duality, we find that there are times where we are happy, helpful, as well as accepting, and then there are times where we are unhappy, hurtful and not accepting. At times whatever we imagined that came to pass, and at times whatever we desired didn’t happen. There are times where we were great success and times where we were great failures.

Here we can see how two opposing forces are always interacting, and the cycles are always alternating. It is imperative that we understand this human drama and become sensitive to our lives if you wish to evolve. Every moment, directly or indirectly, we are affecting people around us with joy and pain. Even

though we are in a field of one Divine consciousness, this universal law of duality creates a sense of separation. This separation causes ripples in our consciousness.

Then, what can we do in the wake of adversity? Next time you get hurt in your relationships, or someone insults you or you have adverse experience, then practice the following steps.

Stop resisting the pain, stop blaming and pointing fingers. Immediately pause, and practice staying still inside.

Allow the pain that is already there and give yourself permission to experience it fully without looking outside, judging, justifying, condemning and resisting it.

Then you will see the magic. It feels some sense of calmness inside. Sometimes the problem or crisis may still be there but you will rise above to see the whole experience differently. Invoke the divine presence when necessary, to give you strength and guide you during the process.

Repeat this exercise every time you encounter an adverse experience.

An intuitive, informative and insightful speaker, Sri Madhu Sai has a unique ability to help you understand the cause of your problems and empower you to deal with it directly. He has developed a practical & proven Integrative Yoga Therapy system where he blends Yoga, Meditation, Ayurveda & Vedic Astrology to lift you to deeper understanding & a higher level of consciousness.

Walking and the Brain By Audrey Meuse

By now most of us have heard of the cardiovascular benefits of walking.

We know from many peer reviewed studies that a regular walking programme “improves cardiac risk factors such as cholesterol, blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, vascular stiffness and inflammation, and mental stress.” (Harvard Health Publications: Walking, Your Steps To Health programme.) Few of us, however realize that walking has benefits that go beyond muscles and metabolism. The truth is: walking is brain exercise.

Yes, Seniors! Instead of doing crossword puzzles, trying to learn a foreign language, or looking for stimulation from a computer game designed by neurologists, you could simply go for a walk. How does that work? How can walking stimulate the brain and stop those neurodegenerative diseases that we’re all afraid of ? The studies seem to show that this is the case. A study published in Neurology showed that those who walked the optimal distance: six to nine miles a week, cut their risk of developing memory problems in half. In fact, the study was so powerful that Peter Snyder of Brown University’s Alpert Medical Schools acknowledged: “What we’re finding is that of all of these non-invasive ways of intervening, it is exercise that seems to have the most efficacy at this point—more so than nutritional supplements, vitamins and cognitive interventions...The literature on exercise is just tremendous.” The studies even show that patients will the dreaded Alzheimer’s can stave off further decline and even show improvement. And, if you’re young, your brain will even be fitter.

What is it about walking/exercise that makes our brain fitter? It works this way: Exercise causes the body to release a protein FNDC5 into the bloodstream. This protein, in turn, causes another protein, Brain Derived Neurotrophic Growth Factor

(BDNF), to be produced. The BDNF stimulates the growth of new nerve cells and synapses (the connection between nerves) and also preserves the survival of existing brain cells. In addition, the increased supply of oxygenated blood along with antiinflammatory and anti-stress effects of walking clearly benefit the brain. Convinced that walking improves brain health? There is even evidence that adding poles i.e. Nordic Walking adds even further benefits to your walking

As children we all went through developmental stages that were vital to our brain and neurological development. One of the stages that was extremely important for integration of the right and left brain hemispheres as well as development of the cerebellum (our balance control centre) and nerves was learning to crawl. The cross-crawl pattern that humans learn to perform involves coordinating the movement of one arm to the movement of the leg on the opposite side of the body.

Due to the contralateral organization of our nervous system, this movement pattern requires the use and integration of both the right and left brain hemispheres. This is extremely important for the development of proper coordination our muscles needed for movement, posture and balance. In short, because we have a natural die off of neurons and their connections that we do not use, we are at risk of decreased muscle coordination and balance if we’re not regularly performing contralateral activities. The ancients were right after all: “Mens sana in corpore sano” A healthy mind in a healthy body! Opening a New Door

By Stephanie Banks

Open your arms to the world, embrace all that is before you. Do not fret, worry, brood or fear the possibilities that lie in your wake. The voice of fear creates apprehension; you are not a prisoner in the cell of fear. Reach through the bars and turn the key to open a new door. You need to allow the light to shine freely and continuously, if the flame begins to flicker add another log to your fire.

Make room for expansion within yourself to allow lessons to flow effortlessly through your window of everlasting growth. With focused intention you will continue to grow in leaps and bounds. Remember the strength in groups. Companions of spiritual growth increase our momentum and the vortex will become wider and more effective. With enough stored energy and love for the planet and universe there will be possibilities worldwide. Over time you will reach far away places that at this time seem so far away. Remember dreams and ambitions are as close or as distant as your intentions allow them to be. Dreams become reality with

persistence and resilience. There is a difference between persistence and forcefulness. If a piece of the puzzle does not fit, pick up another piece and try again. Keep things simple, as complications are a result of our thoughts that are limited by society. Life is not meant to be complicated. Yes, it can be complex but complexity differs from complicated. Complexity requires soul-based responses as situations arise. A complex situation is like a layered cake. Each layer providing a different taste, smell and experience. Savour each layer as you solve your mysteries, this is where the true enjoyment exists. Be excited, ambitious, selfless and motivated by the correct purposes. Our purpose here is to become coherent with all that exists in all realms. All realms exist simultaneously and all are true realties within each other. Have fun and be free.

Stephanie Banks, author of “A Soulful Awakening”, is a spiritual mentor, speaker and medium. Stephanie’s unfailing connection to the non-physical realm will bring depth and clarity into your life. www.stephaniebanks.org

Growing Fruits & Vegetables

The Benefits of

Indoors

With the rising prices of fruits and vegetables, the average person is having to be more creative when it comes to providing food for their family. Shopping at different places, finding better bargains etc. A percentage of people in the future will decide to take matters into their own hands and will start growing their own foods as a way to subsidize the increased costs of heading to the local grocery store. Growing indoors is easy, fun, low maintenance, cost-effective and a great project the whole family can enjoy! With more people growing indoors, it’s natural for people to start learning more about gardening and figuring out what works best for them. Here are a few reasons and benefits to growing indoors.

Grow your fruits, vegetables, and plants all year round. No rain, wind, or snow to hinder your gardening. Indoor growing allows you to control all the elements and grow your plants 365 days a year if thats what you want to do. Save money! The cost of produce is supposed to increase by 4% by January 2016. You can even provide food for your neighbours, and maybe make a few dollars out of it at the same time

Choice. Grow the foods you and your family like. Get your children involved in the process. It can be an easy and fun family project.

By Dana Wlodarczyk

Excitement. For those who never thought gardening could be exciting, give it a try. Seeing how things can change and grow to create food is a very interesting and exciting process. That you can plant something one day and then many days later pull it out and eat it is very cool. Much cooler than going to the store and handing something over the register. Thats just too easy! Quality. As you grow your own fruits and vegetables you know 100% that it hasn’t been sprayed with pesticides or herbicides. Clean and fresh. Companies operating with the mind-set of profiting no matter what, at times will compromise the end product which results in fruits and vegetables being picked weeks before they are ripe leaving them to ripen en route to the grocery store which results in less nutrition and less flavour to the produce we are buying and thinking is so good for us. Start the process now, create a space in your home to grow indoors. Do some research and begin. Good luck!

Dana Wlodarczyk works with with the Juice Plus+ company helping educate people on the importance and benefits of whole food based nutrition. Interested in Health & Wellness she promotes products that help people achieve better health and nutrition from fruits and vegetables. www.dwlodarczyk.towergarden.ca
