Harvest...
At this time of year we start to harvest in the natural world. You might still shop for your food rather than grow it yourself but we are still connected to the cycles of nature and you might now feel a natural time of gathering within you if you listen closely. Have you read books, attended trainings and seminars, perhaps studied trained and worked on your ‘self’ for years? Now Is the time to harvest that information and put it into action: gather what you have learned and take it out into the world. Share it with others, use it in daily practice.
What will you be gathering as we enter the fall? • Wisdom from past experience • Love for the life you lead and those around you • Gratitude for all you have • Patience knowing all will be well
Whatever you do, remember to gather your friends and loved ones near and definitely gather at the wellness festival!
Gather with friends at the Interior Wellness Festival: September 26-28 at TRU in Kamloops. Enjoy healing, fitness and wellness: treatments, classes, workshops, music and performance. We hope you will come harvest knowledge with Interior Wellness Magazine and our vibrant community at the festival. www.InteriorWellness.com
Returning Home To The Divine Within By Rev. Joy-anne Fournier
As Summer comes to a close and the warm nights begin to turn cool, just like the Swallows return to Capistrano each year, many of us are returning home from our summer’s journey. At times, we may find ourselves tossed and turned by conditions and circumstances now and again, get thrown off course and lose our way. Has anything like that ever happened to you? If it has, then this may serve you in a profound way as we Return Home, home to the Divine within, home to the Changeless, home to a profound Faith, home to Peace of mind and heart, and home to Truth.
“Returning Home to the Changeless” is building a foundation for handling change - any kind of change, whether it’s the type of change that causes us to say “Thank Goodness” or “Goodness, No!” Using an analogy of the man who built his house on solid rock, we return home to the ever-present, unchanging Power of The Divine Within.
“Returning Home in Faith” We could all benefit by returning home in faith, couldn’t we? The real question is: faith in WHAT? We all have a lot of faith, but in what do we have faith? Often times, especially in challenging times, our faith is misplaced. What we are really called to do is to return home to a faith in our Divinity, in the Unity of all life and in the integrity of the Universe.
“Returning Home to Peace” In today’s world, there is a lot of talk about peace. Actually, there is a lot of talk about the absence of peace and the turmoil that surrounds us. These conversations are often accompanied by blame of corporations, countries, governments or rebel factions for being the cause. But is that true? As spiritual people, we know intellectually that peace begins with us, but do we actually live that in our hearts? We are called to return home to Peace of mind and heart. “Returning Home to Truth” Rounding out our Returning Home by returning home to Truth, the Spiritual Truth that when we keep our eyes lifted to Spirit, we can create miracles, we can attain high Spiritual goals and dreams and we can create day-to-day lives that simply work better!
Today, I choose to return home to the Divine that I am, as I see beyond appearances and see only the Good in all situations. I return home knowing that The Divine is the Source of all my Good. Today, I return home to Truth.

Reduce Stress and Recharge By Nature’s Fare Markets
Are you feeling the negative effects of stress? Stress has become a serious health issue for a growing number of people. In some circumstances, stress can be a positive thing; it can motivate you to perform at your best, or help to make a quick decision in an emergency situation. But, stress becomes negative when it becomes part of daily life.
Chronic stress affects the body, behaviour, and mood. It can cause high blood pressure, constant headaches, increased risk of heart attack, and muscle pain or tension, along with a number of other serious health concerns. Try some of these helpful tips to reduce stress and prevent the negative impact it can have on your well being.
1. Understand the Cause
Keep a stress journal. Make an entry each time you experience the feelings of pressure, anxiety or stress. This will allow you to recognize stress triggers and assist you in adjusting your daily routine to avoid them.
2. Take Daily Lifestyle Steps
Here are two factors to help reduce stress: get a good night’s sleep, and participate in daily exercise. Get at least 8 hours of sleep in a dark cool room. Darkness triggers the release of the sleep hormone Melatonin. Daily exercise releases endorphins and reduces the build of stress hormones.
3. Supplements for Wellness
Look for products that include Ashwaganda, Rhodiola or Siberian Ginseng, as these are all restorative herbs that help the body reduce anxiety, depression and the effects of stress. GABA, 5-HTP or L-Theanine, help with the body’s production and balance of key hormones. Nature’s Fare Markets offers articles on a variety of wellness, environmental, and social topics available through their blog, The Good Life magazine, and social media pages. Ahhh… Time!
By Kris Rae
Society is obsessed with time, constantly driven by the clock! Most people now have heard of the law of attraction… one of the absolute, unchanging laws of this glorious universe. The law basically states that people will attract what they give their focus to. So, in relation to “time,” what will they attract if they constantly focus on not having enough time? A consistent apparent lack of time! The other phenomenon regarding time is the multi-tasking myth. An attempted solution to lack of time is to try to put even more into each moment of time! However, often, they get less done! The lack of presence to each task makes each less effective. Here are some ideas for people to help with attracting a better relationship with time:
Seeing time as a friend. They can compliment time on a regular basis and be grateful for the things they do get done. Focussing on the good and not dwelling on the lack.
They can multi-task … A little! There are two activity types that pair together well, “thinking required” tasks and “non-thinking required” tasks. For example, people could listen to music while working, do mental planning while walking, fold laundry while watching a favourite show (though some husbands may say this one is not possible!). As long as only one of the activities requires mental concentration, it works!
Choosing tasks that feel good to them. They can set the expectation that there is a good time for everything!
Take time off the clock. For example, a walk with no set return time. This shows them they are free to choose how they spend their time. All in all, if people just lighten their relationship with time and see it as their ally, it will start becoming exactly that! Kris Rae teaches meditation and relaxation techniques for all ages in classes in Kamloops plus develops self-healing tools and guided meditations for home use.

After Summer Detox Do I Really Need One? By Dr. Alison Beach
The answer is: it depends on how you have treated your body over the spring and summer months. Due to being more social and being on holidays in the summer, most people usually eat more and differently than they normally do, meaning more sugar, alcohol and fast food. If this is the case for you, then, you may want to consider doing a detox.
So what is a detox, you may ask. Detox or detoxification is an important process our body uses to remove unwanted toxins that build-up from pollutants such as in the air and in our food. A toxin is basically any substance that creates irritating and/or harmful effects in the body. The focus of detoxification is to clean toxins from the body in order to promote optimal health. There are two main types of toxins that we are exposed to including internal and external toxins. External toxins include chemicals ingested such as pesticides, alcohol, caffeine, sugar, cleaning agents, and cigarette smoke. We acquire these toxins by breathing them in, eating them, or through physical contact. Internal toxins are the toxins that our bodies produce through normal, everyday functions. Impaired digestion can also cause the production of toxins.
Due to the fact that we live in such a “polluted” world, most of us are exposed to toxins on a regular basis. Toxin exposure can lead to many symptoms such as fatigue, brain fog, skin problems, hormonal imbalance, digestive issues, allergies, headaches, and asthma. Detoxification improves health, vitality and rejuvenation. It helps to clear symptoms, treat disease and prevent future problems.
Thus, a couple times a year, mainly spring and fall, the body needs to detox to ‘deep clean.’ It is important to note that not all detoxification programs are suitable for everyone. In fact, many people can get very sick from detox programs if it is too strong for what their body can handle. Therefore, it is important to discuss detoxification with a healthcare provider to tailor a program specific to the needs of your body. How to spot a Shaman
By Tamryn Fudge
A shaman isn’t someone special. He has no super powers, he has no dreams of running the world. A shaman is an everyday person, one who has surrendered to his deepest desire to help his fellow man.
The path of a shaman is one of challenge – filled with the necessity to remain clear and open to the guidance and opportunities for healing around him. If you meet a shaman who seems self-important, then perhaps he is not wearing the right outfit. For the outfit of a shaman is one of humble service, lost love and found souls.
A shaman renounces her life, to some extent. Agreeing to serve her brothers and sisters in whatever way she can. She creates a life of service, available to her community for whatever they may require.
A shaman develops relationships with the energies that hold power in the land and waters around her.
The energies she learns about become dancing partners, dear friends and mentors. They hold her feet, grounding and supporting her, as she journeys into the other realms to seek answers and wholeness for others.
A shaman is a mystery; for she must walk her own path, striking a balance between collective purpose and personal desire. She must dip her own bowl in the water only to sustain herself, but not to overfill. Once upon a time, shamans were understood and respected for who they are – men and women who walk between the worlds so that we may heal our hearts in this world.
Nowadays, shamans are scattered and few. If you meet a shaman, you may never know it. But perhaps you may feel it, my friend.

Gratitude
By Sri Madhuji, Foundation For Healing Beings
Gratitude shifts people’s focus to the prosperity that is already present within them. With gratitude, they count their blessings, notice simple pleasures, and acknowledge everything they receive in life (both positive and negative) as a gift from the divine. With gratitude, they are continually aware every moment of how much they’ve been given (positive and negative), and they are learning to live their lives in awe.
In addition, behavioral and psychological studies have shown that surprising life improvements can stem from practicing gratitude. Giving thanks makes people happier and more resilient; it strengthens relationships, improves health, releases tension, and reduces stress. Of all the relationships one can have, that to the mother is regarded as the most significant one. Ancient Vedic texts clearly mentioned that gratitude to the mother is kept at the highest pedestal (on a par with or even above God).
When people hold negative images of mother inside them based on their childhood experiences, they stop relating to their mother, who sacrificed to bring them into this world. A simple, common sense observation shows how a mother pours uncon-
ditional love to her children, and their very existence is due to her sacrifice. Studies have found that gratitude to the mother is correlated with the removal of obstacles and improved health.
People need to release any negative images they hold and express their gratitude to their mother. They should connect to their heart center, bring the image of their mother clearly in front of them, and release any form of negative thoughts such as “she does not love me” or “she is selfish,” and any emotions such as fear, anger, and hatred they hold inside. They need to give themselves permission to forgive themselves, accept themselves as they are, and invoke the Divine Mother and see her in their heart sanctuary.
Sri Madhuji is an intuitive, informative and insightful speaker and spiritual teacher of prosperity techniques. He provides individual coaching, family counseling, therapeutic energy balancing, teacher training, mentoring, and leadership programs.

Sustainable Building "In Canada, buildings are responsible for: 33 percent of all energy used; 50 percent of natural resources consumed; 12 percent of non-industrial water used; 25 percent of landfill waste generated; 10 percent of airborne particulates produced; and 35 percent of greenhouse gases emitted." *(CEC, 2008)
Use Less of the Planet
A building's energy consumption will exist for its lifetime, according to its design and its occupants' habits. There is also the energy cost of the materials that go into the creation of the building. And the energy used to actually create the building the fuels and materials used in the construction event itself. "Embodied energy" is the total of energy inputs used to create and deliver a product or service and it is a valuable way to assess how we build. Consider the full impact of a construction event and make it count.
Live in a Healthy Home
Typical construction products off-gas sometimes quite toxic materials. The Living Building Challenge's (LBC) Red List and the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) green building rating standards assist us in choosing healthier products for our buildings. The more consumers who request these materials, the more easily we will be able to access them off the shelf in the future at the suppliers. Currently, sourcing 'cleaner' materials is one of the most time-intensive aspects for many builders attempting the LBC.
By Wendy McLean
suppliers’ questions about what they provide and how they can design for efficiency, use less, create less waste, employ healthier designs/products and include or plan for solar electricity and/or hot water. Consider the embodied energy in your products. Purchase cleaner and more local materials where possible. Ask for Energy Star rated products; they are often available but may not be on display. Sometimes, this is more expensive, but often not; you need only plan and ask for them.
By making informed changes, however small, we offer others a base of information and drive the shift to a healthier, more resilient, economically and socially healthy, sustainable community.
The Split Rock Home Project
The first Living Building Challenge registered project in the Kamloops area is nearing completion now. A modern, airtightbut-healthy, low-embodied energy, net zero electricity and almost completely net zero energy, affordable home made of primarily natural and local materials and built with resiliency in mind.
Wendy McLean is the designer-owner-builder of this unique home and owner of Split Rock Sustainable Technologies. Design to Use Less
In terms of energy-use standards, several rating systems exist. Many of you are familiar with LEED, which several buildings in Kamloops meet. There is also Passivhaus, a European standard of overall efficiency, which many homes in North America have now met. There are also the distinctions of being Net Zero - this may be Net Zero Electricity or Net Zero Energy (producing as much total energy as one uses, both electrical and heating). The Energy Star program also rates buildings as well as appliances and products.
Design to Provide More
The LEED standard incorporates multiple standards of sustainability, attempting to encourage not only more efficient design, but healthier buildings and healthier communities. The Living Building Challenge goes even further, intending us to integrate our buildings into our environment to achieve net zero water and net zero energy use, with the lowest embodied energy possible, while causing the least damage to the environment and to create net positive effects on the environment and community.
What Can I Do?
You don't need to be building to a rating standard to make use of them. One can learn much by reading about these standards, looking at what they value and at how different designers and builders have met their requirements in different ways and asking for products that meet their standards.
On your next project, make sure to ask your contractors and

The
Mystic Sage Within
W
e have all heard the saying, "We are spiritual beings having a human experience." On a daily basis, we are interacting with spirit and energy. We all house innate gifts within our beings, and at this time on earth, these blessings are being awakened. Our soul holds knowledge and experience of ''who we are" and "why we are here." There is a metamorphosis within our hearts that is here to help us remember our purpose on earth. The innate is the wise part of our being, beyond the linear, rational thinking of the mind. Our innate awareness resides naturally within us, communicating and guiding us daily. Everyone possesses these attributes, and we call messages we receive from the innate part of our beings "intuition." Intuition brings information to our awareness in a few ways.
Clairvoyance is the ability to "see" spirit. This could be experienced by viewing fleeting mental images in your mind's eye. Visionaries perceive auras (energetic fields) around people, animals, and trees in an energetic rainbow of light information. Many clairvoyants are visual and artistic, and experience vivid, colourful dreams. Hold the intention to see only love and that is what you will see.
Clairaudience is the ability to "hear" spirit. Have you experienced ringing in your ears, or hearing music/voices when you are alone? We may receive repetitious guidance or fleeting messages, informing us to take specific actions. Telepathy is a form of clairaudience, where one can tune it to another person's thought's in their presence or remotely. We all can commune and receive support and benevolent love from our guides, Archangels, and the Ascended Masters. 14 www.InteriorWellness.com | Fall 2014
By Tania Niedbala
Clairsentience is experiencing through recurring emotional feelings and physical sensations which may have no apparent connection to your current state of mind. Empathic beings experience this since they are extremely sensitive and posses the ability to perceive what other people are feeling, thinking, and intending as if these were their own expressions. You may experience tingling sensations in your body, stomach aches, instant anger, or your hair standing up on the back of your neck. Claircognizance is when we just have a “knowing about something from the past, present, or future without receiving the information in a traditional manner. You may have premonitions or predictions about events, and receive random pieces of information about people, places, or situations out of the blue. The messages come to you through sudden insights with a sense of foreboding or deja vu, and a feeling of certainty or correctness.
There are many ways that spirit weaves its way into our daily lives. We can connect with spirit by using our intention, and trusting ourselves and our gifts. Place your hand on your heart, and breathe gratitude deep into your heartspace, this stills the mind. Then imagine strong roots growing from the bottom of your feet deep into the unconditionally loving earth which supports us daily, this will ground you. The innate within us provides love, support, and guidance just waiting to empower you, just ask.

The Diaphragm: Not Just Another Muscle By Paul Roberts
Why is the diaphragm so important for my body? The thoracic diaphragm is a hugely important, dome shaped muscle inside your ribcage. Its main function, alongside the external intercostal muscles, is inspiration – i.e. breathing in.
The diaphragm’s main job is to contract and pull the lungs downwards. During a strong inwards breath, the tendon can pull the lungs down up to 4 inches. This works like a bellows – as the lungs stretch and become larger, pressure inside them drops and becomes lower than the pressure outside, causing air to become sucked into the lungs.
As the diaphragm drops down, we expect the abdomen to expand a little bit to give it more room and make sure we get enough oxygen for our body`s needs. Here is a big problem for many of us in this day and age – we don’t like our bellies sticking out! Lots of people we have come across seem to have been raised to hold in your tummy and keep your chest puffed out as proper posture. This leads to a change in breathing habits. We keep our bellies pulled in tight, which limits how much space the diaphragm has to pull down. To compensate for this, we try to use secondary muscle groups, to use our upper ribs to inhale with shorter, sharper breaths.
Already, this affects the amount of oxygen and carbon dioxide in our blood and cause symptoms which can be related to hyperventilating! In addition, these secondary muscle groups often have more than one function. For example, the scalene and levator scapulae muscles in the neck are used to move the head around, but when the head is held still, they also help pull up the upper ribs to help breathing in. So the less the diaphragm does, the more these muscles become overworked and tight, which can cause neck pain or perhaps compress nerves, causing things like numbness in fingers! It`s not just the neck muscles which have 2 functions. Have you ever heard the stomach being described as a washing machine, mashing and pulping up food into a liquid ready to be digested? It is the diaphragm which provides the power for this. The stomach sits on the opposite side of the diaphragm to the lungs – so as the lungs expand, the stomach is flattened and vice versa. When the diaphragm is not being used as much, this washing machine doesn’t work as well. Food is less broken down in the stomach and is less easily absorbed further down in the intestine, which can exacerbate digestive problems.
If you have been breathing like this for a while, it can take some time to retrain yourself. Your body will have adapted, for example, lower rib joints and their related muscles may be stiff and restricted, which manual therapy such as osteopathy can help with. We often give breathing exercises in conjunction with this, which focuses on where you take in breath to help change which muscles activate without thinking while breathing. My favourite exercise for this is to lie down, placing one hand just below the navel, and the other hand with your index finger extended 12 inches from your mouth. As you breathe in through your nose, make a really conscious effort to expand your belly and let the hand lift with the movement. As you breathe out, purse your lips and blow onto the finger as if it is a birthday candle. You are trying to flicker the imaginary candle but not blow it out!

LINE UP AT THE BARRE & LET’S GET FIT! By Tricia Treherne
BARRE classes are gaining popularity as one of the hottest fitness trends. BARRE is a one hour, full body workout using elements from ballet, Pilates and sport conditioning. This unique and fun workout combines low impact moves with high intensity intervals of strength training followed by stretching. A regular routine of BARRE classes will sculpt the body, resulting in a toned, trim physique. What should you expect from a BARRE class?
During a BARRE class, you should experience a range of lowimpact exercises that tone and firm up the butt, legs, torso and arms. These resistance exercises not only sculpt muscles and elongate the appearance of the body, but they also build strength. BARRE class is done to music, creating an upbeat and fun-paced class that increases your heart rate and helps to burn fat while building muscle.
You will and should feel the burn of your muscles as you squat, pulse, pliĂŠ, rise, and move your body through a range of motions. Just as you think you cannot do any more, you move into a stretching phase where you stretch out and release the muscles you were just working.
During class, you should feel that you are working your full body, building strength, stamina, endurance, flexibility and dynamic stability. What should you NOT expect from a BARRE class?
Pain - of ANY kind. Not in your knees, not in your feet, not in your neck, etc. BARRE class is designed to work your entire body and you should feel the work everywhere - your legs, your arms, your core. However, if you feel pain in your low back, in your knees, or in your neck, something is wrong with the execution of the movements during class (assuming no previous injury). During class, corrections should be given on how to do the movements effectively so that no pain is experienced and also that you are getting the most out of the work, staying safe and injury free. No previous training is required to take a BARRE class. Classes are open to all ages and fitness levels. No ballet training is required! You get a lot of the benefits of ballet without ever having to don a tutu!

Ayurvedic
Ayurveda is an ancient science of natural living that hails from India. Ayu meaning life and veda meaning scripture, Ayurveda can be translated as The Book of Life.
Sadhus (holy men in India) and ancient sages studied nature and through meditation, the laws of natural living to increase health and longevity. They passed this knowledge down to the general population, teaching techniques to live in harmony with nature and how to heal with natural cures.
Warriors in ancient India gave self massage with oil as part of their training to increase strength, vitality and stamina. In modern times, young babies and respected elders are given an oil massage for the same reasons.
According to Ayurveda, every living thing has a life force called prana which we obtain from wholesome food, water, fresh air and sunlight. Improper or unnatural living can cause a depletion of prana or blockages in the body. Ayurvedic massage (abhyanga) is an Ayurvedic technique that increases the flow of prana to stave off disease and illness.
By Nakul Dey
It has an effect on all levels: physical, mental, emotional, energetic and spiritual. When administered properly and regularly, it enhances circulation and blood flow, aids in proper breathing, digestion, and sleep. It has a strong detoxification effect and is helpful for treating stress, skin issues, arthritis and muscular/ joint pain.
Traditional Indian massage techniques, rhythmic strokes, and unique blends of specially prepared medicinal herb infused oils are used. Ayurvedic massage focuses on marma points throughout the body similar to reflexology or acupressure points.
The oil is important because it carries the therapeutic benefits of the herbs beyond the skin and into the cells. It helps to sustain the flow of prana in the body long after the massage is complete, bringing a greater sense of overall harmony and balance to the recipient.
Nakul Dey has been practicing Ayurvedic massage and yoga in North India since 2004. He recently moved his practice to Kamloops and is happy to be serving in our community. Child Development from the Perspective of Anthroposophy By Krystal Williams
Gratitude By Angela Davis
Harvesting ~ what a delight and what a lot of work! This year, we have 16 tomato plants (most of them cherry tomatoes), basil, peppers, summer squash and many other delicious herbs and veggies. We also have generous neighbours who share cherries, apricots, apples and plums. My summer is spent processing this bounty into countless little jars of apricots in lemon and ginger, hot cumin pickled summer squash, cherry jam and charred cherry tomato salsa. This work will provide my friends and family with nutritious and delicious reminders of summer. We really are fortunate to have a garden. "The three stages in the child's development are usually not granted enough importance, yet they more or less determine the whole manner in which the child can become a human being inhabiting the Earth"
S
~ Rudolf Steiner Waldorf Education and Anthroposophy 2
teiner presents to us the idea of seven-year periods of child development, the well known early years, the years between the change of teeth and puberty and the years of adolescence. He taught in his lectures that each of these phases of development must be completed before the next one is awakened if we are to build a strong foundation for our children’s capacities.
In the first phase of development when the forces of imitation work strongly in the child, the role of the caregiver modeling the desired behavior cannot be underestimated. After the change of teeth, good character and morals develop in the child through nature, painting, art, vivid storytelling, moral pictures and heroic characters. Puberty opens up the world of abstract ideas, faculty of judgment and independent thought. Intellect is a soul-force that is only born during puberty, and we ought not to bring any outside influence to bear on it before this period.
This is only a very brief summary that barely scratches the surface of this complex and intriguing subject. The chart below is a tiny window into the phases of child development from a threefold human being perspective:
0-7 years
7-14 years 14-21 years
Body Soul Mind Willing Feeling Thinking “Learning to “Learning to “Learning to Walk” Speak” Think” Loving Role Model Bold Leader Authority
Should you wish to learn more about Anthroposophy, the lectures referenced here are available online at the Rudolf Steiner Archives at wn.rsarchive.org.
REF: The Kingdom of Childhood, Education for Adolescents Krystal Williams is a student of Anthroposophy, a philosophy that seeks to better understand the human being and bridge the teachings of science, art and religion. 20 www.InteriorWellness.com | Fall 2014
As we know, many people suffer from a lack of food. In a world where we waste more food than the hungry need to survive, it's important for us to find ways to change this and one way may be in our attitude. Have you ever felt guilty or ashamed for having so much? These feelings add suffering to a situation that already hurts. Instead, we can try to embrace our good fortune. Gratitude can create an empowering nourishment that can help heal us and then flow into our families and communities.
Try writing down all the things/people for which you have gratitude. Post that list somewhere for easy reference. Or you could spend two minutes at any point in the day (I like the moments just before my eyes open in the morning) mentally listing all the things that enrich your life, including the challenges or things that seem negative. Do this for two weeks and notice what changes for you. I imagine possibilities like: a brighter spirit, a happiness, a desire to be kind to yourself, compassion for others, or perhaps a courage to just meet the day.
We can take these flowers of gratitude: courage, kindness and compassion, and share them with those around us. These are the kinds of steps needed to reduce unnecessary suffering in the world. In a life where we have to work hard to shake off the bad stuff and work even harder to make the good stuff stick, gratitude is one powerful and sweet way. Angela Davis is a Hakomi therapist, teacher and has a private practice at 614 Battle Street in Kamloops. She kindly invites you to come and explore ways that you can have less suffering, more happiness. www.compassionatepath.ca

Sarah came to our centre after many years of fighting her weight. At the 300 lb mark, she underwent bariatric surgery but it didn't work as expected and ten years later, was in danger of kidney failure so the surgery was reversed. Unfortunately, she reacted to the medications while in the hospital and they almost lost her.
I was very curious about Sarah’s excessive illnesses, accidents and surgeries and the fact that she always pulled through somehow. Despite her anger, frustration and despair over her situation, I saw a lot of tenacity and persistence in this woman. I wondered what special talents and abilities she was trying so hard to hold back from the world.
When she realized it was safe to reveal what was really bothering her, she told me that as a child, she had demonstrated extra sensory perception skills that people couldn’t begin to understand. Out of concern for her safety, Sarah’s parents taught her to suppress her talents and secluded her from social exposure. Thus, she grew up in fear of others and of herself. She felt depressed and at odds with herself.
When Sarah began to accept her unique ability as something of value and not wrong, her life took a turn for the better. New possibilities began to show up in unexpected ways. She found the strength to do a nutritional purification program and for the first time in years she began to feel positive changes in her body – less pain, more agility and energy, and a more positive mood. She continues to manage her cravings, and her weight is dropping. Her perseverance and courage are an inspiration to me and to all who know her. Many people come to our centre feeling broken. Sarah hopes to encourage others with her message to believe in them. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if everyone could say...
“Please don't fix me, I'm not broken, I'm just energy in motion...”1

Supporting Learning
Energetically By Marianne Ferguson EEM-CLP
We can learn. We learn to crawl, walk, and talk and nothing that we ever have to learn at school is more complex. Sadly, many people avoid learning or believe that learning is difficult. If you feel hopeless or shy about learning; if you are heading into the classroom yourself this fall as a student or teacher; or if you want to support your loved one in learning, there are simple energetic tools for you.
Much affects our ability to stay energetically organized and thus, our ability to learn. Many individuals, including some teachers, are energetically and neurologically disorganized before they enter the classroom and their energies can have an effect on the whole class. Even when there is a good energetic organization prior to being in the class, if the style of learning is not suited to an individual, energy patterns will slow down, and move into neurological disorganization (the cross over patterns of the brain weaken).
Some symptoms of weak and disorganized energy flows that affect learning are: feeling chronically tired, clumsiness, lack of focus, inability to retain or access information, poor memory, inner chaos, or can’t find your words. Everyone can learn simple energy exercises that support their energies. Below are two examples to get started and help you take on those learning challenges!
1. For repatterning weak right/left brain crossovers: Run your hand up the inside of your opposite arm, squeeze the shoulder and pull firmly down across your torso to the opposite hip. Repeat several times on each side.
2. For strengthening back brain/frontal lobe patterns: Hold your arms straight in front of you. Cross them so the palms touch together and clasp your fingers. Now pull your clasped hands under and set them against your chest. Straighten your body as you breathe in and fold over a bit as you breathe out. Do this several times, alternate crossover and repeat. Unfold arms and press your palms together placing your thumbs against the “3rd eye” point between your brows. Hold for three deep breaths. Pull thumbs apart to temples (while still keeping fingers connected) and shake the excess energy off your hands. Marianne is an Eden Energy Medicine Clinical Practitioner, EEM teacher, and herbalist in Kamloops, BC. Eden Energy Medicine explores the body's many layers of energy, and brings them to balance. www.splinterhillwholistics.ca
SPIRIT CARDS Michele Giselman’s
A Review
This sacred card deck offers clear and simple messages for a well-lived and meaningful life. Each Spirit Card is imprinted with an inspired message from our soul. Spirit speaks through Michele, reflective of her considerable training and experience with the Shamanic Teachings of the Inca Tradition of Peru. Michele is also a gifted intuitive. Your soul, which of course is spirit, is bursting with pride and it is expanding and reaching out to touch the infinite, therefore having no limits.
The Spirit Card box, containing 60 cards, is defined by a grassy woodland scene, photographed by the author. The image portrays the beauty of our local landscape and is also printed on each card. Spirit speaks very softly. Go somewhere quiet and you will hear that loving voice talking to you, just you.
The life enhancing messages contained within the deck may be useful for daily meditation or contemplative journaling. Not only inspired by our own Michele Giseleman, these cards are also produced locally. They are available for purchase at The Golden Buddha and will be available at The Interior Wellness Festival.

abels tell us how to interact with those around us and what to expect from them. There are “positive” labels and others that, depending upon how they are used, are less positive. Labels provide a level of safety and protection in the world.
How many times do you refer to people by their assigned labels – mother, father, daughter, son, husband, wife, brother, sister, friend, etc. These labels are descriptive, positive and explain our physical relationship to others in our circles.
My question is, “Who wrote the rules?” Or in this case, who created the labels, and how much substance is behind them. For example, a child might be labelled as ADD or ADHD to explain a lack of concentration or focus. If you put that child in front of a computer game and let him play, chances are that when you return a couple of hours later, they will still be glued to the screen. Is that child truly attention deficit – or was he just bored with the lack of stimuli offered? Could the behaviour be learned or is it tied to diet?
LABELS
And then, there are other labels that may, at times, have a negative influence. We might label an individual's emotional state – calm, nervous, alcoholic, addicted, unhappy, healthy, etc. Or, label them as ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder), ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder). These labels provide expectations of interactions in our daily life because they reference our emotional relationships. If you “own” the label, you lose who you are.
We use labels to create a level of control and safety in our daily experiences. If we know what we might expect, then we know how to respond or act, and then we can feel safe, because on

some level, we feel we have control of the outcome. For example, if we “label” someone as ADD, then we expect a lack of concentration or focus from them.
The danger is that we may become the label and lose track of who we really are – because we are buying into someone else’s story.
Do you know who you are, or why you are here?

She has long held the belief that our physical healing will be achieved through a synthesis of therapies involving colour, sound, herbs, essential oils, crystals, and meditation.
