I remember several times in my life being told to be realistic, to be reasonable, and to lower my expectations. I’ve seen it happen over and over again to children and adults alike by well-meaning teachers, co-workers, family members and friends who didn’t understand the impact those words could have. Sometimes, they say it because they are avoiding the pain of their own bigger life that they’ve been afraid to choose. Other times, they say it because they care about us and want to keep us from being hurt. Every time that happens, we either resent it because their point of view isn’t true for us, or we contract ourselves a little bit smaller to conform. The damage is the limitation that creates less and less of the authentic you over time.

This isn’t about blame. The reality is that we have grown up in a culture that, for the most part, has everyone confused and settling for mediocrity. The sad fact is that most people either don’t know what they really want, or they limit what they want to what they think they can have. In other words, they have to see it and the path to get it before they will choose it.

When I study the lives and accomplishments of joyful, successful entrepreneurs like Richard Branson, founder of the Virgin Group, I see life masters living full out, passionate and outside of their comfort zones in business and in life. They not only embrace the possibility of failure as a necessary stepping-stone on the way to greatness, they actually court it. To do otherwise would leave them wondering if they had stretched themselves far enough.

Creators choosing their life on purpose move in the opposite direction of the masses. Most people look at the options available, then choose what they think they can have and achieve. A life master chooses what they want to create first whether they can see it or not, whether it has ever existed before or not, without knowing all the steps to accomplish it and they always start before they feel ready.

Somewhere along the way, we’ve been taught to avoid the discomfort of failure and disappointment so we never venture too far outside of our comfort zones. As soon as we approach the edge of our familiar territory, that discomfort arises and, as it is our ego’s job to keep us safe, it is interpreted as dangerous which move us quickly back into our safety zone. That resistance, however, is not an indicator of danger, but an indicator of growth to be celebrated.

What do you resist in your life? Where do you procrastinate? What do you avoid? What have you stopped looking at? Find those places and go there first. On the other side of that resistance is your life beyond limitation. On the other side of that resistance is you… unreasonable and on fire! Why Certified Organic, Essential Oils? By Billy Feistmantl

When you enter the world of essential oils, you will find nature in one of its most powerful form. The liquid substances are extracted from flowers, grasses, fruits, trees, leaves and roots. There are, at present, about three hundred different essential oils. Each single oil is used for many diverse purposes.

Essential oils are one of the great untapped resources of the world. These extremely complex liquids are in harmony with people and planet alike. You will always need just a few drops to bring yourself back in balance. These days, the medicines and household goods, the air we breathe and the food we eat, contain more chemicals than we can handle. The unknown effects, as they react together in our bodies and the chemical overload on our planet, guide us sooner or later to find alternatives for our problems. One solution is right under our nose, a delight of creation; nature's essential oils.

There are a lot of reasons to purchase certified organic essential oils. First: You may want to support organic agriculture, organic farmers and sustainable practices. The less pesticides, herbicides, and chemical fertilizers used on our planet, the better life will be for humanity and the natural environment.

Second: You want to buy certified organic essential oils because you use them diluted in carrier oils or in creams instead of directly on your skin and from there, it gets absorbed into the body. Third: In the distillation process, using a poor quality oil means you will have pesticides and chemicals in concentrated form contained in the oils.

Please educate yourself or consult an Aromatherapist before using essential oils. We are very blessed to have these powerful healers for all kinds of disorders. If you are pregnant or feeding your baby with breast milk, always consult an Aromatherapist because the oils are very powerful. GREEN SISTERS carries a line of high quality certified organic essential oils. You can order online @ www.greensisters.ca or find store locations across BC. Your Child’s Most Important Teacher By Krystal Williams-Gardener

“You will not be good teachers if you focus only on what you do and not upon who you are.”

Midwifery From a tiny acorn, grows the mighty oak

~ Rudolf Steiner

As parents, our role in our children’s lives is to provide a structure in which they can feel confident and secure about their place in the world. It is up to us to create an environment in which our children see us as a loving-authority. We have all become frustrated with our children from time to time. However, when we are impatient or short tempered with our children, we are failing to provide them with the security they need to develop fully. The path of parenting is one of growth.

In my own parenting journey, I have been asked to investigate my reactive emotions countless times. My path has called upon me to transform my preexisting parenting patterns and investigate my own inner life. When I looked deeper into these patterns, I often saw they were not rooted in the present moment, but rather a result of previous experiences not fully processed. I needed to examine my reactions with awareness and loving kindness for myself so that I could be calm and present for my children. In short, I worked on myself.

We can only be this guide for our children when we have authority over ourselves and our own inner lives. It is through ongoing striving to improve our inner-authority that we, as parents, learn to set ourselves aside and be “present,” listening with our hearts to what our children are bringing and to what they need. When you develop your own strength of will and nurture a heart and spirit connection to your parenting life, you will discover you are more proactive and less reactive. From there, our own reactions come from a place of calm clarity, and we are able to give our children what they need most from us: a parent who reliably holds the role of a consistent, loving guide in their lives. The music is pumping loudly and I can hear my partner behind the heavy bag, encouraging me to keep going “harder, faster, and higher!” The instructor’s voice in the background is filling the air with tips on technique and shouting out words of inspiration to push ourselves; but I don’t really hear any of this. I am so internally-focused on the combination of kicks and punches that I feel like I am in an almost Zen-like state, similar to how I have felt during meditation or a yoga session.

I stay present in the current moment, ensuring that I am doing each strike purposefully and with intention, only thinking about where I am placing my body next. I know if I lose this focus I will falter. Each time I re-start a series of strikes, I try to improve on the one I have done before – how I can make this combination flow better, seamlessly moving my body and transferring my weight as to simulate a choreographed dance, as though I have rehearsed it a thousand times. Every combination is new and exciting and challenges my muscles, balance, strength, flexibility and most importantly, my MIND!

I come out of this internal trance when I hear the Instructor yell that one word –SWITCH!!! I am exhausted mentally and physically and immediately looking forward to the next combination challenge. Now it’s your turn... There is no judgement here, only a unique culture where women of all ages, sizes and fitness levels are welcomed. Find passion in your workout and learn to harness your energy to become the strong woman you were meant to be.

Within each of us, there is a Divine blueprint that will allow you to not only grow into your greatest potential, but to thrive. This map for unlimited success and potential is programmed into you, like your DNA. Understanding this blueprint gives you a real understanding of who you are, where you can go, what you can achieve and more importantly; what you were meant to do. You have beautiful talents and gifts, but when was the last time you really looked for them, acknowledged them, brought them to the surface?

We each came here with a mission, an intention of what we wanted to experience and what we want to extend out into this world. Each moment is an opportunity to extend this energy into the world, creating a boundless expansion of loving, joyful energy.

By Tyson Bartel

Buddhism called to me while in Thailand. Buddha's teachings, the Dhamma, made sense and meditation seemed the rational way to go. The two wings of this meditation are Vipassana, insight, and Metta, loving kindness. When I started, I didn't have much insight and didn't really love myself either. Buddha's words: "Even as a mother protects with her life her child, so with a boundless heart shall one cherish all living beings: radiating kindness over the entire world," inspired the monks to teach: "Start with love for oneself. If not feeling love for self, think of someone you love; like a floppy eared puppy with huge paws." The monks said Metta is the fruit of Vipassana. Fast forward to the present and I'm still learning how to love myself and the world. How to accept the sadness I feel about injustice, war, etc. And the grief of losing loved ones along the way. How to move forward with an attitude of gratitude while my heart hurts to hear the news. Being in nature is good medicine for remembering we are one with the web of life, brings gratitude for being alive here and now. Nature is teaching me that love is what unifies creation and beats my heart. Love is a special kind of feeling and is a witness to all the other feelings, which usually predominate in daily living. In feeling sad, I can love myself in accepting when sadness arise. For instance, feeling sadness and fear about the destruction and pollution that will happen if Ajax mine is built in Kamloops. That is a natural feeling response for a person to have and we can love and appreciate ourselves for protecting the earth and our community from danger. Loving "thy enemy as thyself" has a whole new meaning when love is discovered to be witnessing it all. When all is love, then all is loved! Whew...

How to live aware of that all the time? Step by step, whether always aware of it or not, the love story of life unfolds. It's a miracle and a mystery to be here. Let's "radiate kindness over the entire world." Gotta Love It!

Tyson Bartel is native to Kamloops and lives in the Nelson area of the Kootenays. He is grateful for learning to practice Thai massage and Yoga as expressions of Metta, loving kindness. If you have any questions or feedback on this article, please contact tyson@thaitouch.ca. May all beings be well and happy!

Lose Weight Forever By this time of the year, many people are frustrated and fed up at not being able to lose the weight they had hoped to lose when they made their New Year’s resolution. Diet plans have been thwarted by birthdays, holidays, forgetfulness and cravings. The green coffee and other quick weight loss miracle programs didn’t work in the long run. Trips to the gym seemed to instigate more after-work out binges and sadly, they are feeling betrayed and besieged by their own bodies. The whole weight loss project has made an enemy of their body, and the losing battle has left them tired, drained and unmotivated. Some people are fearful for their health due to all the statistics on obesity as a risk factor for disease in the media. Obesity is even called a disease in itself nowadays. The result of labeling obesity a cause or a disease itself is that now, you can treat it with medication, when in fact it is actually an effect of an unhealthy, under-nurtured body.

Would you be willing to consider that the body actually does nothing wrong? It is designed to keep us in survival and everything it does is toward that purpose. We tend to mess with this design, however. The symptoms your body expresses are ways in which it tries to repair, avoid or rid itself of harm in order to survive. When we attempt to stomp out a symptom, we are preventing the body from doing its job by design. Obesity is a symptom, not a cause. When your body perceives a threat to its survival, one of its survival mechanisms is to store fat as potential energy.

the Healthy Way By Cathy Lidster

You may be thinking, “Hey, does that mean I’m not actually fat - I just have a lot of potential energy?” If so, I applaud this attitude. It’s a lot healthier than hating your body, or forcing it to lose weight with appetite suppressants, grueling repetitive stress workouts, starvation or a lap band (I can’t think of a worse torture for a starving body).

A body that stores fat is trying to protect you from harm. The least you can do is not to harm it in return -- like the woman who came in to see me the other day asking for So, here are 5 simple weight loss tips you can help in losing weight the do for a lifetime, not just for bikini season: healthy way. Protect it from harmful chemicals and toxins both in the food and in our environment. That includes additives, cosmetics, cleaners, dyes, etc. Did you know your body uses fat cells as storage sheds for toxins in order to protect you from the harm they can cause?

Please remember, you Will Lose Weight when you become healthy first. In fact, it is the ONLY way to keep the fats off forever.

As long as your body is toxic or under organ stress, you will hold on to your body fat, which stores the toxins so that you can survive. Remember Obesity is a symptom, not a cause. Try putting yourself first in the morning. Now, a lot of people will say there is no time. However, even a few minutes is a great start. Begin the day by giving yourself value: doing anything that feels good to you - exercise, stretching, reading a few pages of a good book, writing in a journal or doing a short meditation. Have fun and be creative! Start small, but do it daily as it takes a few weeks to create a habit. The benefits will be plentiful. You will have increased energy and happiness, plus less negative emotions, such as resentment, when doing your other roles for the day.

Now let’s add one more thing – kindness. Be kind to yourself in every way. No matter what perceived mistakes you may have made or times you have not lived up to your own or other’s expectations, treat yourself with compassion. You deserve your love more than anyone else. Take a few moments as you start your day to tell yourself what you have done well and what is great about you. No negative self talk! This may be hard at first, so be easy on yourself but be honest. You can always find a silver lining. You can even start by complimenting yourself on putting yourself first in your day. This alone is a beautiful message to send to yourself – you are worth putting first!

Kris Rae has been an Intuitive Energy Healer for 10 years and teaches people through classes and one-on-one sessions how to calm overwhelm, find relaxation and to tap into their own healing ability. She also provides guidance, tools and techniques to use on their own.

Empowered Personal Expression By Tania Niedbala

Internal thoughts and spoken words are powerful and express our messages, intent, and vibrational frequency. How often do we bring awareness to the effects of our language? I recently watched an interview with Doreen Virtue and she shared her experience in observing specific words and the digital image they produce. She said "angel" and it produced a large image that visually looked like an angel in flight. Love, peace, and bliss also produced vibrant images. Even if "angel" was spoken with an angry tone, it still created the same beautiful image. Negative words produced a dense, small image.

We are absorbing the low vibrational frequencies of our words which are usually packaged within fearful thoughts. The law of attraction states, "like attracts like" therefore, we attract what we generate and broadcast. The vibrational frequency of spoken and written words is influential and Dr. Emoto has done remarkable research on the impact of words on water. He took regular tap water and put it under a microscope and visually, it had no real form. He said the words "love" to the water and observed that this created a snowflake-like, geometrically spectacular image. He used angry words and observed the water, which then looked distorted and weak.

ve” o “L

This pattern seems to represent the sacred geometrical representation of the vibrational frequency of a word. What internal thoughts and spoken words do you expose your body to? We are mostly water, so the words we think and speak have a major impact on our health, happiness and wellness. Let’s honor our body with thoughtful communication and use our powerful intent to bless the water we drink and the food we nourish ourselves with. We all have the ability to manifest a beautiful, sacred geometry within the ocean of our bodies.

Tania Niedbala's focus is a complementary healing approach to emotional, physical, mental, and spiritual challenges to assist personal wellness & empowerment. This is not mere sentiment, and it is more than a spiritual attitude of mind. It is a deep, scientific fact. It is not until we send out love vibrations that we - Dr. Ernest Holmes can receive love in return.”

Have you ever pondered just how important it is to have a friend? After all, where would we be without them? Some research done several years ago identified the most effective ways to create good friendships that are deep, connected, and spiritually meaningful. To many, these friendships are their very lifeline. They help us get through the night and to handle the interesting challenges we are often faced with in our daily lives. Here are the six ways to find, build, and keep our friends.

1. Make and Keep Clear Agreements

For me, it comes down to a word that is really important: integrity. Do we have integrity in our friendships? Do we keep our word? That’s a base level, a bottom line that must be present for a friendship to go anywhere. So, yes, do what you promised or you renegotiate the agreement. That’s what builds trust and trust builds a relationship. I have to know, “Can I trust you, and can you trust me?” if not, we really can’t have much of a relationship.

But having integrity in our friendships is much deeper than that. To be in a meaningful and true friendship, I have to be who I am, no matter who is home, and I have to know that you are being who you are. Making and keeping clear agreements, being real and giving your friends space for that as well is essential for love to be present, for love to grow, for us to create loving friendships.

2. Honour Our Differences

Each one of us is a unique, individualized expression of the Divine. What does unique mean? One of a kind! You are one of a kind. Made that way on purpose. Look around - we are all special and unique. And it is important to us that our uniqueness is honoured, it really is. I believe this was done intentionally. No tree is the same, no flower the same, no snowflake the same, no sunset the same, no grain of sand the same. And not one of us is the same. So honor your differences. If you have a friend who is very different, honor what is unique in them, look for the good and see the differences as charming.

3. Communicate Well

Spiritually, what does it mean to communicate well? We are always communicating something. The question really is, are we dialed in to the correct channel to hear the communication? Slow down, make eye contact, and pay attention to your friends. See what is really going on. Create an open space for communication by being fully present in the moment and do not allow yourself to go on automatic pilot.

By Rev. Joy-anne Fournier

4. Touch

As a physical, tangible being, it is of utmost importance to have physical touch such as giving a hug to your friend. In fact, science has proven that we will die without some form of touch.

Touch makes a huge difference and can definitely level up our vibration of friendships. There is an ever-increasing scientific research that is telling us that touch has a powerful impact upon our physical well being. The Touch Research Institute at the University of Miami School of Medicine has done more than 1,200 studies on touch and has found some pretty significant evidence that touch: * Promotes faster growth in premature babies * reduces pain * decreases autoimmune disease symptoms * lowers glucose levels in children with diabetes * improves immune systems in people with cancer

So remember to reach out and touch your friends!

5. Being Acknowledged and Appreciated

A powerful way to express love in our friendships is through appreciation and acknowledgement. I can speak from experience that simple gratitude, offered sincerely and often, creates an atmosphere of sweetness and connection that goes beyond description. How often do you acknowledge and appreciate your friends in small and large ways? Take some time to love and appreciate them.

6. Deep Listening

This last idea is actually the No. 1 way people say they feel loved. Being listened to is the number one way to feel deeply, truly loved. It sends a message that says, “You matter to me. You are an important person in my life.” And nothing says, “I care about you” like listening. Deep listening is miraculous for both the listener and speaker. When someone receives us with open hearted, non-judging, intensely interested listening, our spirits expand. So listen to your friends!

To make a friend, be a friend and follow these six guidelines to find, build, and create deep and meaningful friendships. You will be healthier, happier, feel loved and appreciated and you will heal the world.

Exploring Shamanism and Test-driving a Ferrari ~ Shamanism with Tamryn Fudge~

I was sitting at my work desk when I missed a call from Tamryn Fudge. I was expecting her to phone me when she arrived at my house that day for a shamanic healing session, but I hadn’t been expecting the call for another hour. A quick email scroll revealed I’d mixed up the time of our appointment, but by the time I rushed home and rolled into my driveway, she was pulling out.

I apologized profusely, dropping something from my jacket pocket as I scrambled to invite her inside my home. She asked to reschedule. I felt I’d compromised my professionalism, but she said “we were not meant to work together today.”

This idea of natural flow would transcend through my experience with Fudge during an intuitive reading and healing session. I was naive to her Peruvian-taught practice and well, shamanism in general, but I was open to the experience.

First was the reading; ours was over the phone. It begins with a prayer, drumming and the calling of natural elements and spirits. Then, you ask a question.

By Jessica Wallace

“As a shaman, my work is to shift my perspective,” she explained. “I just tell you what I’m receiving.”

I had been transitioning into a new job at the time, so my question came as natural as her care and ease. I was hoping she would tell me I was doing the right thing. But, that’s not exactly how it works.

“It’s not meant to tell you what to do, but give messages for your highest good and your path,” Fudge said.

I was surprised by the amount of detail she went into about both my work and personal life. She didn’t give me the answer, so to speak, but rather, the tools to find the answer myself.

“There’s no right or wrong,” she said of one of my personality traits. “Just notice where that function is helpful and works for you and where it is a challenge.”

After the session, I wasn’t sure about shamanism, but I was sure how I felt — fantastic. The healing session that followed at my home was different. Through prayer, drumming and Fudge’s personal healing stones, I was asked if I was ready and willing to shed something from my framework.

“We accumulate clutter based on our experiences and our upbringing and our personalities,” she said. “There’s a certain amount that affects our daily life.”

I volunteered an experience I’d had with a bully and when she left, I felt a bit off. It wasn’t unusual, she told me. She’d learned to describe the feeling: “It’s like learning to drive a Ferrari.” It was certainly better than my old beater. After my sessions, I was interested to learn the Kamloops woman stumbled into shamanism about a decade ago while seeking alternative treatment for her pet. She first got involved with animal communication and sought to find inner peace within herself.

“I’ve had anxiety in the past,” she said, adding she was referred to a shamanic practitioner. “I loved what she did with me, I loved the experience and I loved how I felt.”

She’s younger than you’d expect at age 39. Her youth, coupled with her warmth and friendliness, made it comfortable for a newcomer. Having started off a bit skeptical of it all, I asked her how she would convince someone to give it a try and just experience it all. Her answer is what I should have expected — she wouldn’t.

“You only get out of it the depth of your intention,” she said. “My work is really supporting you for what you’re open to.”

She does, however, think it’s important for people and animals to learn how to navigate life. “None of us are taught this — and these are fundamental things.”

On- and Off-Grid Renewable Energy Systems

In the renewable energy business, we often refer to “on-grid" or “off-grid." These terms refer to whether or not the site receives power from a utility. If your home, cottage or business is supplied with electricity obtained from BC Hydro, Fortis BC or another utility, it is "on-grid."

A renewable energy system can be one of 3 general types: • "Off-grid," a stand-alone power system using a sun, wind and/or water source plus batteries and fossil-fueled generator • "On-grid," feeding directly into the utility grid • "On-grid with battery and/or generator back-up," which feeds into the grid, but has the added capability to supply backup power if the grid goes down

We can also create community power systems that can be "offgrid" and can form their own independent 'micro' grid, supplying multiple homes or businesses.

Shouldn't we get off the Grid?

Many people want to "get off the grid" and think that this will help the environment. What they may not realize is that to be off-grid, they must have a battery bank and fueled generator to maintain their batteries and provide back-up power, regardless of how good a solar or wind resource they have. Batteries, while recyclable, are energy-intensive to produce and currently form a significant portion of the investment in an off-grid power system. Fuel also costs money and the environment.

The Value of being Grid-tied

In other parts of the world, where the utility is coal-fired, one could argue for the green value of going off-grid, but here in BC, while we can choose to do that for independence or due to high utility interconnection costs, it cannot provide a smaller carbon footprint. Off-grid systems are also unable to take advantage of all the energy produced at peak resource times. However, if you are grid-tied, all the power that you harvest from your renewable source is fed back into the utility grid, wasting none of it. If you have the ability to be grid-tied, this would be your first choice for both financial and environmental reasons.

More to explain the value of being grid-tied, consider overall efficiency and economy of scale. BC has an amazing asset in its legacy of large dams that form the main source of electricity for our grid. They provide us with a storage system for energy that

By Wendy McLean

has a low environmental cost. These dams can act as a large battery bank that interacts almost seamlessly with solar and wind power. Integrated into the grid, the electricity that we get from solar and wind, which is intermittent, allows us to draw down our dammed water less, effectively 'storing' that energy, creating a more resilient grid.

It is a personal choice to be off-grid, depending on one's desire for independence, the costs of utility interconnection, utility dependability, lifestyle and personal preference. The choice to be off-grid is not 'bad' for the environment, but should be made with an understanding of the factors involved.

From Wheat Belly to Dairy Allergy: What’s All this Talk about Food Allergies? By Dr. Alison Beach

There seems to be a lot of discussion about food allergies these days and for very good reasons. Due to the over processing and overconsumption of our food, more and more people are beginning to develop food allergies. When we think of a food allergy, we typically think about ingestion causing hives, difficulty breathing, and/or digestive upset. All of these symptoms can occur; however, food allergies are responsible for many more symptoms than just these.

Let’s first start by defining food allergy. It is a reaction of the immune system to certain components of food. When an individual with an allergy to a certain food ingests it, their immune system recognizes it as foreign and mounts a reaction to it. This means that, just as the immune system would react to a virus or bacteria by forming antibodies, the immune system may form antibodies and mount an immune reaction in response to a component of food. There are different ways in which a food allergy can manifest.

First, there is the immediate food reaction which occurs within three hours after ingestion and is caused by the presence of a high IgE antibody level in the blood, which sets off an immediate allergic response. This is considered the “anaphylactic reaction” and symptoms include shortness of breath, hives, swelling of the lips and throat, and vomiting. This type of reaction is the one tested for by Medical Doctors using the scratch/prick test. However, food allergies can also cause delayed food reactions which can occur up to several days after ingestion of the reactive food. Such allergies are often the cause of many "chronic symptoms” and are mainly mediated by IgG antibodies. Some common symptoms of food allergies include infant colic, eczema, psoriasis, digestive upset, depression, asthma, fatigue, ADHD, autism, inflammatory bowel disease (ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s), irritable bowel syndrome, inability to lose weight, migraines, headaches, hormone imbalance, chronic pain syndrome, low immunity, arthritis, and autoimmune conditions (rheumatoid arthritis), to name a few.

Communicating with Elephants By Cynthia Yaunish

Local Body Talk practitioner, Cynthia Yaunish, recently returned from a life-changing journey to Sumatra, Indonesia where she learned to communicate with elephants. Here's an excerpt from her inspiring adventure:

The pictures and stories I brought back from my ten days in Sumatra cannot begin to convey how this experience affected my life. I was with a group of sixteen animal communicators and healers practicing animal communication exercises and healing sessions.

There was Samon, the male patriarch, whose handler asked us for help in understanding what his elephant was trying to communicate to him. When I stood before Samon and asked what he wanted me to do, he sent a wave of energy into my zero point energy wand that almost made me drop it. He asked me to wand his handler’s third eye to open up the communication between them.

I was the surrogate for Cartesia, the female matriarch, who wanted some essential oils for herself. The emotion opening up in her heart brought me to tears. As we were tapping out her session (head and heart), she took her trunk and tapped her heart with us. Sibaitin, the 2 year old elephant, turned to me and used his trunk to tap his heart. He was introducing himself to me! Sibaitin means “one heart.”

In order to diagnose food allergies, many Naturopathic Physicians use serum lab testing to assess both IgE and IgG antibody levels. If you suspect you have a food allergy, the first step is to get tested. The good news is that if a food allergy is identified, there are numerous ways in which we can desensitize your system to minimize or eradicate the allergy and get you feeling better.

Yeti, the little orphan, was found caught in a snare trap. She was so lonely and depressed, and limping. After a couple of sessions, she was a different elephant. The turning point seemed to be when one of our group sang her the lullaby “Sweet Baby Mine” from the Dumbo movie. I could feel the love wash through her during the song – it seemed that it opened up her heart (and mine, which seemed to be a theme for me during this trip!) And, least of all, Agum, who I rode for 2 hours and gave me such insight. It was an amazing experience and I will definitely be going back! Why Do You Think They Call it

"Happy Baby Pose"? By Aimee Townsend

Those who practice yoga, know first-hand the many benefits that it can offer. Yoga may improve strength and flexibility, increase self-confidence, build a positive self-image, help to balance the mind and body, build concentration, and even relieve stress and pain, to name only a few. People of all ages, shapes and sizes, and physical capabilities can reap the benefits of a regular yoga practice and have been for centuries. But, if yoga is so good for us, what about our children?

Yoga for kids has become popular in the West over the past few years, and with good reason. Just like with adults, yoga offers children who practice improved posture and the opportunity to strengthen all of their bodily systems. They are given a greater understanding of not just their own body, but of anatomy and physiology in general. Yoga can be a FUN way for kids to increase their sensory awareness and general body awareness, while also practicing cooperation and teamwork. Kids’ yoga classes can offer structure, which helps to develop discipline and self-control, but also offers room for the kids to be creative in a safe space where they are supported by their peers and can in turn offer that same support to others. This helps to facilitate a deeper sense of community while also encouraging compassion, generosity, and respect. A kids’ yoga class is a non-competitive environment for children to build coordination and balance and to expand their self-awareness and awareness of others, of nature, animals, and the environment, while also teaching self-acceptance and self-love. Additionally, yoga teaches children how to relax and reduce stress. Yoga helps kids to find and build upon their inner strength, increases emotional strength, and eventually teaches them how to find inner peace.

If YOU love yoga, think about all the times you wished you started practicing years ago. Imagine if you learned all that you've learned from yoga when you were a child; think of all the wasted time spent worrying or judging yourself or others negatively. Then, think about what kind of person you'd like your child to grow up into. With all that kids’ yoga has to offer, why wouldn't you want your children to try it?

Aimee Townsend is a 200 hr certified traditional hot yoga instructor and a Rainbow Kids Yoga certified kids yoga teacher who has been teaching for Kamloops Hot Yoga/Kamloops Yoga Centre since she completed her first training in 2012. Aimee also works closely with children as an assistant Early Childhood Educator, who has been employed with the Kamloops Child Development Society since 2011.

Here Comes Spring! By Tammie Oram, RTC, MTC, RPC, MPCP

Spring is in the air and time for people start to get giddy, get outside and breathe in deeply! Fresh air, warmer, longer days and if you have flowerbeds like I do…little heads of life, (aka… tulips!), are starting to peep through the soil where the sun rays touch and warms the earth. It’s a time of new growth and opportunity. It is a time to think about renewal, a fresh start on goals, friendships, vacation planning, maybe a wedding.

Spring and Summer tend to be the most popular seasons for weddings. With this in mind I have been thinking about premarital sessions or offering workshops to help couples start this new journey; there is a lot more planning that needs to go into marriage other than the “big day.” Several areas that I encourage couples to discuss prior to getting married or even living together include: Money, Emotions, Equality, Friends, Conflicts, Family of Origin, Sex, Household Responsibilities, Parenting… This is the most important decision one can make: who do I spend the rest of my life with? Wouldn’t it be a good idea to set up a solid foundation at the very start? Because soon enough, (approx. 2yrs), the “in love” phase fades out and reality starts to set in.

Being in a relationship is absolutely the hardest thing you are ever going to do in your life so let’s try to make it a little bit easier and get on the same page. One of the pages that I like to explore is a relatively simple concept…how do you feel loved and appreciated?

With this in mind, I love the book, 5 Love Languages by Dr. Gary Chapman. The 5 Love Languages are simple tools that we can use instantly: they are simple and positive! The 5 languages are Words/Time/Gifts/Service/Physical touch. In order to share what we like, we must do some internal work on ourselves first…what do I like? What makes me tick? These questions must be asked and answered before sharing them with our significant other, especially if we want them to understand.

Our daughter and her friends are at the age where they are starting to have serious relationships, some are making wedding plans; you can bet that they will all receive this book from me tucked into their wedding/shower gift. Who doesn’t want to share happiness and love with ourselves and to our loved ones?

BEING GROUNDED A Connection to Mother Earth By Marianne Ferguson, EEM-CP

An electrical device is “grounded” when it is connected to the ground in a way that allows excess energy to leave the system. We human beings are a bit more complex. We need to be grounded for the natural exchange of energies between us and the Earth, but we also need to be rooted. Like trees, we need to send our energetic roots into the Earth, so they hold us steady.

field? That is exactly what the ground is. The rhythmic pulsations of energy flowing from the surface of the Earth keep global life in rhythm and balance for everything that lives on the land or in the sea. You may be suffering needlessly because of being disconnected and you may be suffering in more ways than you can imagine.

Our energies ground through our feet and through our aura. Exposure to the ground provides an electrical “nutrient” in the form of electrons and recharges your body with something you never knew you were missing. Spending time outdoors, especially barefoot, is the easiest way to stay grounded. In our developed world, we have largely become detached from our mother Earth; our bare feet rarely touch the ground.

Some signs that you may need to work on grounding are if you feel anxious, spacey or lightheaded, an overall discomfort, disconnected or unable to relate to others or the environment. Also consider grounding if you are having difficulty listening, learning or focusing, trouble walking or balancing, when you feel emotionally unsupported and are picking up too much energy from others.

Our Earth mother is an omnipresent source of natural healing energy. We are reminded again of our connection to all that is. Hug a tree whenever you can – its energy will pick up yours and ground you through your aura. The following is a simple physical grounding technique to re-connect. • Hook up your third eye and navel: Place a middle finger of one hand into your navel and of the other hand on the forehead between the eyebrows. Pull up and hold for 60 seconds or more.

• Place your hands at the sides of your waist – thumbs in front and fingers toward the back. • Slide your hands slowly and firmly down your legs.

• When you get to your feet, squeeze the sides of your feet and slide hands off and onto the floor. Being grounded affects you physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually. It allows you to withstand life’s challenges at each of these levels. Staying grounded also protects you from taking on the energies of others.

Many people describe a sense of well-being when they walk barefoot on the Earth. We live on a planet alive with natural energies. Who regards the dirt beneath their feet as an energy

• Hang there for the duration of two deep breaths.

• Trace your hands up the insides of the feet and legs, flowing out to the hips and up the sides of the body to the armpit and back down to the waist. By Katina O'Neil

Core Questions of our Time: This is a continuation from the last issue of Interior Wellness Magazine where I spoke about the core of shamanism being a path of direct experience and revelation. Here is another way of looking at it: One of the most pervasive core questions of our time asks what it means to be fully human and what we need to do to best pursue this transcendental goal.

Let me first put forth the idea that we are made up of two ‘selves.’ We are the ‘local self’ – the one we most identify with – the biological, ego, personality self. This is you, this physical being who is reading this article. Then, there is the ‘essential self’ – sometimes called the soul or greater self. This ‘essential self’ is ‘non-local’ meaning it exists within and beyond space and time. This self resonates with the larger reality or the mind of God.

It is our human nature – the ‘local self’ - that resonates with a physical reality that still is concerned with physical survival, the survival of the fittest. We see this demonstrated everywhere; the wars we fight, the politics we engage in, and the sports we play. There is always ‘us’ and ‘them’ and one needs to be superior, better than everyone else, in charge. This is the way we ensure the survival of our ideas, beliefs and even our physical bodies. However, it is becoming more and more apparent in our time that if we continue reinforcing a hostile reality based on survival of the fittest, our hostility will ultimately become the biggest threat to our physical survival.

What of our other self, our ‘essential self’? Resonating with the larger reality, or the mind of God; this self is encoded with your inner potential. This self can access fields of consciousness that are not concerned with physical survival because this self exists beyond space and time and is not bound by the cycle of life and death. If you are reading this, you are probably aware of this self having had experiences of an inter-connectedness with something beyond your everyday reality; a larger whole, an awareness of immortality, a sense of expectancy, a feeling of oneness filled with divine grace.

With these experiences, the ‘local self’ becomes imprinted with them and begins to remember its own higher self and desires to recapture them, setting the ‘local self’ on a spiritual path, an inner path. Once we become aware of an inner path, our external path and inner paths intersect and demand a choice. We can use expanded levels of awareness only as a therapeutic way of coping with life’s up and downs, or apply the expanded awareness to manifest an expansive life. You either adapt to your own limits or consciously choose to self evolve, to become fully human.

If you choose to self-evolve, identification with the physical nature of the ‘local self’ begins to erode. The substance of the ‘essential self’ feels more significant, and the patterns of the larger whole feel more real. The essential self-guidance is felt more frequently and we desire the opportunity to experience ‘deep witnessing’ of our essential qualities. Through this self-evolution, fueled by direct experience and revelation, we become connected to the whole of life, evolving consciously and helping to co-create a new world to live in, a world of survival for all.

Learning Pilates By Christine Waterman

Have you ever watched a child build a tower out of blocks? When they begin, they go straight up, just as high as they can. Naturally, they don’t get very far before their tower starts to lean or fall over. As a child continues their ‘work’ and progresses, they learn to build a wider, more stable base...a foundation. The stronger and more stable the foundation, the better chance the tower has of staying straight and upright.

It is this same principle that is applied when we work in Pilates. Sure, you can jump into a class and probably do alright without knowing the principles and fundamentals, but when you take the time to learn the basics of movement, engaging your deep, stabilizing muscles, and moving with precision, you will have a much better chance of finding the true work of Pilates. These basic movements are built into what we call the fundamentals.

Fundamentals, or ‘pre-Pilates’ moves were not originally created by Joseph Pilates, but rather by the elders (those taught by Joseph). These were designed to help clients build their awareness of finding and working from their core. The fundamentals include: knee sways, knee folds, ribcage arms, abdominal curls, side lying legs (oyster), 4-point kneeling.

Within these basic movements are the tools that introduce new connections and teach clients how to move correctly. These movements are also important as it provides the Pilates teacher with crucial information on how the client moves and their holding patterns. This enables the teacher to create a session specifically targeted to assist the body they are working with and create new, efficient patterns to move through life.

Along with the fundamentals, the Pilates principles are always taught. These principles are what set The Method apart from other fitness regimes. The principles MUST be present in each and every exercise to maximize the benefits available. Only practicing Pilates in this way will give you the desired result - a change in your body.

These principles include:

BREATHING CENTERING CONCENTRATION RELAXATION PRECISION FLOW AND STAMINA

The principles, combined with a good base knowledge of the fundamentals, are paramount to one’s growth in a Pilates practice on all apparatus: mat, reformer, Cadillac, tower and chair. Each and every exercise, regardless of what apparatus is being used, contains at least one of the fundamentals. For example, mastering a single knee fold leads to a double knee fold, which then leads to being able to support both legs in a 3/4 bend and then a straight leg position. As the lever of the leg extends and range is increased, the powerhouse must still be able to support the lower half of the body. If the subtleties of the knee fold are missed, there will be gaps in your practice and inefficient movement will take place, continuing bad habits and patterns. If a change is what you are looking for within your body, Pilates can give you the tools to help you find strength and stability to move through life with freedom and flexibility. ‘Play’ with the building blocks we can give you. Work to stabilize your structure and move with freedom.

Christine Waterman has been teaching Pilates now for 13 years and is the head advisor for the Beyond Pilates Teacher Training Program held at The Pilates Tree studio. The next teacher training session is due to begin in the fall of 2014. Please contact the studio for further information at 250-320-2639. Spring 2014 | www.InteriorWellness.com 25

A S T R O L O G Y By Maggy Davidson

Astrology is a controversial topic and almost everyone has an opinion on it; they either believe, or they do not. I look at it this way - humans are clever. When something works, they keep doing it; when it does not, they discard it or stop doing it. Astrology has been around in written history for about 3700 years. Mankind followed the cycles of the moon over 25,000 years ago. It must work since we are still practicing it. Astrology has many branches – best described by the names of the charts. These are prepared by mathematically locating the sun, moon, planets, midheaven, ascendant, asteroids and various other sensitive parts of the universe at a specific point in time and place, such as your birth date and time, the anniversary of a birth date, or even the birth of an idea. The chart most of us are exposed to in Astrology is called Sun Sign Astrology which mainly considers the location of the sun for each astrological sign. It also takes into consideration the placement and location of the moon. This form of astrology has little to do with an individual’s specific circumstances and that’s why it often will not resonate with a reader. It’s been around since the 1700’s, and it’s the horoscope in the newspapers.

Horary Astrology is a fun branch of astrology. Here, the astrologer uses the moment of the birth of an idea or of a question to divine what may occur. This chart is dependent upon sun-sign astrology where the position of the sun is the major planet of influence consulted. I have successfully used Horary Astrology to locate my husband’s misplaced accounting records.

Your birth date, time and place are used to determine your Natal Chart, which is the most important of all. A natal chart reveals your personality traits or tendencies, which may indicate where you will have challenges or ease in your life with family (mom, dad, siblings, cousins, business partners, spouses, etc.) friends/acquaintances, and career. It will indicate if you are able to focus on many things at once or if you have extreme focus. It will also show if you are an introvert, extrovert, initiator, follower, leader, etc. So, the natal chart is like a BLUEPRINT of the potential of who you are.

The Natal Chart is merely an indication of your stronger tendencies. Your experience of the world around you and interactions with others will have a large influence on the outcome of who you are. You always have free will.

A Progressed Chart predicts what may happen in each year or segment of life – and since being forewarned is forearmed, we can alter the outcome by how we respond.

Solar Return Charts indicate what may happen in the year following your birthday. This chart is based on the exact degrees and minutes of the sun’s return to its exact location at the time of your birth. Where you celebrate your birthday has a big influence on your year ahead.

Traditionally, astrologers used an ephemeris and logarithms to cast charts. The math can take up to two hours. Nowadays, we use computer programs to produce accurate charts. Interpretation can still be improved by another (human) point of view.

In addition to twelve astrological signs, there are twelve houses in a chart. Houses indicate your hidden self, finances, communication, mother, siblings or hobbies, health, partners, endings, philosophies, father/career/reputation, friends/enemies, and hidden influences. Simply put, the sun indicates your will; the moon your emotions, Mercury - your thinking, Venus - love, Mars - aggression, Jupiter - good luck or beneficence. Saturn is the teacher, Uranus the unexpected, and Pluto the overall focus of humankind. Placement of the planets in the houses and their interrelationships are used to interpret the charts.

The study of astrology has led me to comprehend that most of us live our first thirty years by adhering to our parents’ wishes. Then, from 30 to 60, we live for our own goals, and often, ages 60 – 90 are spent in service to others. Where would we all be without the wisdom of those who are our elders? Explore the University of You – have an astrological chart prepared!

Maggy Davidson learned to read palms at age 11 and from there learned astrology, tarot, aromatherapy, colour therapy, sound healing and many other disciplines. She can be contacted at Spirit Quest Books in Salmon Arm, BC 250.804.0392. Come and visit us! Spring 2014 | www.InteriorWellness.com 29

WHY

MEDITATE?

By Padma

The other day, I was sitting in the Himalayas along with a group of friends, all meditators; and my guru was leading us into a long silent meditation. I heard him saying something about how our minds are used to looking for questions and then looking for satisfying answers to these questions. How we’re happy when we feel we’ve found an insightful question, and we’re really happy when we believe we have the right answer. The last words I heard were: Close your eyes, don’t speak, don’t listen.

As I sat with my eyes closed, I understood that speaking is the same as thinking, or coming up with questions. Listening is the same as waiting for answers. I decided to try to sit, not speak and not listen.

I noticed my mind habitually going towards thinking about something, commenting in whispers about the situation, or attempting to figure out some answer to a question. I resisted these automatic habits. With trying not to speak or listen, I was left in between all thoughts. I had to hover there, resisting the natural impulse to allow thoughts in any direction.

When you can just sit and not think, all that is left is a still and alert awareness. There are no mind activities, but the full-

ness of your alertness and life are not at all diminished. This means that even without thinking, your full presence is not at all gone, rather the real existence of yourself is, in that moment, undeniable.

Original meditation is this simple, still and focused discipline. You might be wondering, “Why would anyone want to do that?” We have been filled with ideas that meditation is for some purpose: for relaxation or stress-management, or for gaining control of a “monkey” mind.

Our minds like to have a good reason to do actions, and we like to believe in concrete results of our actions. Do we ever value simply sitting and being still, and having a direct, undistracted vision of who is actually present, who we are when we are not obscured or distracted by our own thinking, or by the weather of the world around us? Who is present throughout all situations, in all moments of our life?

This still and direct knowledge of your own pure presence is discovered in original meditation practice. Why would one want to know who is real, living and present? I guess some of us just do. I believe we all do.

Padma is an enlightened educator and one of Canada’s most respected teachers of meditation and self-realization. Watch the Padma Yoga TV series on ONE Channel across Canada; join Padma’s OM Meditation Retreat in India this September. Email padma@padmayoga.ca, www.padmayoga.ca. Manifesting Our Intentions ~ Selective Renunciation to Build Inner Strength ~

By Margaret Huff

“Which is stronger: your intentions or your habits?” ~Gary Kraftsow

The big aim of Yoga is to help us realize our deepest nature, which has been described in different ways: as pure awareness; as eternal and unchanging; as bliss; as Divine; as unity consciousness. Yoga also aims to help us shine our particular light in this world, known as our svadharma, to offer the world our unique gift. Furthermore, Yoga facilitates the purification of our bodies and minds to free up energy, called prana shakti, to make the changes necessary to realize our unique potential as divinely human beings.

These are lofty goals, but based on the number of people practising Yoga, these promises are desired. Yoga offers many techniques that, when chosen wisely and practiced consistently over time, are meant to support us towards these realizations. It recognizes that we live our lives in a very real world of “stuff”: objects, ideas, relationships, roles ~ stuff that can distract us, attract us, repel us, drain our energy, cloud our vision, and generally pull us away from these spiritual and worldly goals, and often scatter our minds and energy.

In this ancient experiential, experimental science, it is acknowledged that strength is required to “stay the path." One practical, and not exclusively Yogic tool intended to increase the will power to fulfill the journey toward the true Self is tyaga, which means to give up something we are attached to, in order to build our inner resources to take our lives in our intended spiritual direction. The practice is simple, though not necessarily easy, and the results are discovered by engaging with the practice. 38 www.InteriorWellness.com | Spring 2014

My own practice of tyaga has been on a fairly small scale, giving up my black tea habit. I have not been 100% strict, but the effects have been interesting: I have let go of coffee, which was my true life-long attachment and struggle, as it wreaks havoc in my system, and it has helped loosen other attachments I have. However, it has also shone light on the depth of my attachments, as I have now become a regular decaf tea/coffee aficianado. Definitely a work in progress, as they say. What we choose to give up does not have to be something “bad” for us, but something we're attached to, or something we do by force of ingrained habit. Focusing regularly on our sankalpa, our intention, is important. Where, in our heart of hearts, do we want to direct our energy? What do we truly want in our life? Intention has been called the beginning of Yoga, and most of us need help in bringing our intentions to fruition. Tyaga is one tool designed to help. The ultimate aim of Yoga is to know the true Self; we meet many aspects of ourselves, and we meet obstacles, as we travel the road. I, for one, plan to stay with it, and look forward to where it takes me.

Margaret Huff offers Yoga classes and private Yoga therapy in the Viniyoga tradition. She offers her skills in helping people improve their condition, physically, psychologically and spiritually. yogamindfully@hotmail.com 250-374-2748.
