Journey into 2013

As we journey into the New Year we are surrounded in winter by the magnificent and picturesque gift that Mother Nature has given us. We leave behind the glitter and glow of Christmas and welcome back our routines and longer days.

A resolution or gift to give ourselves as we start our journey in 2013 is to take time for introspection,

With these days comes the light, which we have missed. We travel to work in the dark and we travel home in the dark. We miss the sun. This is a time of year in which the Inner Light is kindled in spite of outer darkness. It is a powerful time for revelation through dreams and meditations.

Being out in Nature is a sure way to re-connect and be energized. We are being reminded that we are doing the best that we can. Approach each day with unconditional love for ourselves. Whatever it is we want to do: Do it! Everything we need is in place. Remember to enjoy and celebrate who we are and what we bring to the planet. Have a wonderful year. All the best for 2013.

During the Winter Solstice the angelic realms and our spirit guides are much closer. All life is touched by the energies playing within and upon the Earth at this time, especially when we connect with Nature. Few are untouched by these energies at this time. Winter Solstice offers us the opportunity to go within, however the push and hype to be ready for Christmas takes us away from our natural rhythms and energy of the season. We need time for introspection and meditation to enhance our awareness and awaken the seeds of inner potentials.

BellyDance

for Health and Fitness By Tammy Morrison

Belly dance...coin belts, veils, zills, spicy tabla rhythms, snake arms, shimmy... While belly dance is rhythmic, graceful and entertaining to watch, it is also a dance form which is quickly gaining recognition for its many health benefits. An increase in strength and fitness, improved co-ordination and an overall elevation of self-image are some of the benefits attributed to belly dance. It also serves as an effective form of therapy for chronic pain conditions and is a wonderful pre/post-natal exercise. Having fun while improving your health and fitness? Absolutely! Contrary to what the name suggests, belly dance highlights more than just the movement of the abdomen. While it is a fantastic abdominal workout, belly dancing also involves muscles in the pelvis, upper back and neck; the hip and leg muscles are also constantly engaged providing balance while the dancer moves through a range of motions travelling across the floor. Isolated tension and release of the upper, lower and side abdominals not only help to shape a lovely abdomen, but also develops a strong core which prevents low back pain by stabilizing and supporting the lower back. Accented hip movements and rolling undulations also involve tucking and releasing the pelvis, accomplished by contracting the deep muscles of the lower abdomen. This technique strengthens the abdominal floor as well as the vaginal muscles. The constant twisting and turning of the spine engages and helps develop a strong back while holding and rolling the arms in elevated positions not only tones lovely shoulder muscles, but also conditions the neck and upper back muscles. This helps prevent the shoulders from rounding forward, improving posture. The continuous movement of the dance counteracts the compression of the vertebral discs against each other which happens when sitting for extended periods of time. Not only is it a full-body, low-impact workout, belly dance is also a lowinjury risk activity since the graceful movements are natural for the female body, making it suitable for women of all ages. Exercising is one of the recommended non-medicinal treatments for arthritis. Undulations, chin slides and wrist circles are a gentle form of physical therapy for women who suffer from arthritis. These movements initiate the release of synovial fluid, the body’s natural joint lubricant, which helps to increase mobility in the joints of the spine, neck and wrists. Of course, it is strongly recommended that you consult with your family physician before beginning any new physical activity. Belly dance is connected with fertility rituals practiced in the Stone Age where women danced together to honour Mother Earth in spiritual cer-

emonies. The dancing was a celebration of sexual fertility involving movements that celebrated conception and the birthing process. It was a dance created by women for women, all of whom had a profound instinctive knowledge of their bodies. Nowadays, the dance proves to be a wonderful form of pre/post-natal exercise. Many movements of the pelvis and hips mimic the natural motions of a mother in labour. Rolling, wave-like hip movements help firm the pelvic muscles which are greatly strained during childbirth. These same movements also encourage a normal pelvic relaxing process which prepares an expecting mother for the natural rhythm of pelvic tension and relaxation during labour. Also, the beauty of the dance becomes more apparent when a mother-to-be experiences an ‘inner shift’ which allows her to accept her changing body and leads her to joyful and harmonious movements. An increase in energy and harmony can help her feel relaxed and lead her to more easily connect with her unborn child.

Belly dance is also a wonderful way to ‘lift your spirits.’ Although it is a dance involving a certain technique, its style is shaped by each woman; this is a very liberating experience whereby a woman has the ability to express her personality in an encouraging and non-competitive Rosi Wachholz environment. Many women who take the time to get involved with belly dance have shown positive growth in their personal development and have unveiled their female ‘inner-strength.’ While feeling more feminine and artistic, self-esteem increases and many women begin to honour their bodies, becoming more comfortable with their bellies and hips. Negative emotions linked with PMS, menopause and mild cases of anxiety and depression have been shown to improve after participating in belly dance classes. The gathering of belly dancers becomes both a time for serenity and a playground of laughter and enjoyment as the concerns of the ‘outside world’ seem to disappear. Overall, belly dance is an exciting and unique form of exercise for all women who want to add a new ‘zest’ to life. While it tones muscles and decreases joint pain, it also creates a sustained feeling of emotional and physical well-being. Recognizing, feeling and expressing the innate beauty within may prove to be the most significant benefit of all! Tammy has been dancing with Rosi Wachholz since 2008 and affirms that belly dance has changed her life. She is a member of Fatamorgana Belly Dancers and teaches Beginner Belly Dance at Let’s Move Studio with fellow troupe member, Amanda Blyth. Rosi’s passion for belly dance began in 1989 when she started dancing in Germany. Rosi then moved to Canada and in 2000, joined a partnership and opened Let’s Move Yoga and Dance Studio where she began teaching belly dance classes. Currently, Rosi teaches Intermediate/Advanced Belly Dance at Let’s Move Studio and is the Director of Fatamorgana Belly Dancers. WALKING YOUR

MEDICINE WHEEL By Marilyn Puff

Feels like I’ve come full circle! It is like I’ve been in the cave of self reflection and transformation for a full and amazing year. I give great thanks to the many family, friends and practitioners that have been part of this truly healing journey. I have always been curious about the human journey and what makes us tick, and I am amazed at how much different I feel. I am so grateful to honestly be able to say I have more energy, more passion for life and a clarity about the direction I am going.

ney this year was from being on the land and being clear about my intentions. The altruistic nature of the land nurtured all those moments of resting, being in ceremony, singing at the fire, dancing and walking, one step at a time around my Medicine Wheel of discovery. Each point on my Wheel, every friend, family member and practitioner that cared for me, mirrored a different perspective and gave me an opportunity to shift my perceptions and my experience.

My exploration of life has always been focused on self discovery and spirituality. With how much I loved being outside as a child and immersed in nature, it was no surprise to me when over 20 years ago, my hunger for spiritual connection took me to the Medicine Wheel and the Sweat lodge. At that first Wheel, we were asked to wander the hills and find a grandfather/grandmother stone that might be the seed for our own Medicine Wheel. I had almost given up on the search, when I spotted and approached a half submerged stone that triggered in me deep sobs of recognition. I remember having the thought, “Where have you been, I’ve missed you for so long.” Like many, I love my rocks, but I have never had such a deep emotional reaction to a stone since that moment. That brick-like, four sided elder along with the encouragement of my dear friend Estella, has seeded my Medicine Wheels ever since our tender reunion.

I appreciate Inelia Benz and her way of acknowledging and welcoming your core patterns and fears in order to shift them. It takes massive amounts of energy to hold onto old patterns that show up in your body, mind and emotions. What a relief to let them go and to now have so much energy to be creative and available for everything I can imagine life to be. With the gift of so many light-filled energetic alignments this past year, I know we all have countless opportunities coming to us. This is truly a year for moving more deeply into the core of who we are, quieting our minds in activities that inspire us and keep us healthy, so we can be of service and live with kindness.

RETREAT ...Elemental Foundations with Padma By Wendy Marr

In October, 2012, Wendy from Interior Wellness joined the Sushwap retreat with Padma, popular yoga and meditation teacher. Padma is an enlightened educator and one of Canada’s most respected and popular teachers of meditation, yoga and self-realization. The Wikipedia modern definition for 'retreat' is to leave everyday business for a few days (weekend-retreat) up to weeks. The goal is to let go of daily stress and problems. When a dear friend offered me the chance to attend Padma's Eagle Bay retreat I was ecstatic for the opportunity to spend time with this gracious yogi. I had had the opportunity to attend a morning class with her at the 2012 Interior Wellness Festival and was blessed by her teaching style...Here is my adventure: Friday afternoon...jumping into the vehicle with lovely Lucy to rideshare to the Shuswap... an hour full of chatting and getting to know each other...turning off the main road and slowing our pace to manoeuvre along the narrow lakeside road...fall colours are vibrant... the serenity seeps in... I am blessed to be spending the weekend in RETREAT! Arriving to the smell of wood burning fires...stepping out of the car to deep inhalations of cedar...freshness...'pin-drop' stillness! Being shown to my room...discovering a lovingly prepared gift bag (I LOVE gift bags) on my pillow...all is so cozy...I move inward. Circle time...meeting new BEINGS, friends from the moment our eyes meet...drawn to this place of tranquility for as many reasons as there are individuals...instantly feeling the common bond that unites us as seekers of balance, concentration, strength and calm in our bodies and lives. An ice-breaker game, snacks, meditation and gentle stretches...stepping out into the night with flash lights to move to our 'cabin'...giggles and 'good-nights' echo as we trek down an unfamiliar road in the dark...with Lucy beside me it's okay....sweet, fresh air induced slumber...awe....And so the weekend began and continued for the next two days as gentle Padma shares the foundations of classical yoga, meditation, breath exercises and philosophy that she embodies. The practice is easy, useful and the meditation skills delightful! We explored what we are seeking in meditation. Learned mini-yoga moves to gently adjust the body during meditation and explored the subtle and sometimes profound shifts that occur when using different hand positions (mudras) during meditation. My admiration of Padma's stamina, strength and flexibility grows as we learn how yoga moves are healing medicine...with slow, thoughtful movements we can take the time to 'listen' to what our bodies are telling us through the restrictions and 'tweeks' that we feel. Gently stretching and moving towards release and freedom of movement...Move slowly...Take time to center...Be at Peace...Be in Action! The time to leave has come...my mind is full of new ideas and subjects explored......eager to implement some of the new-found techniques...Within hours of leaving I am on a plane for the East Coast...back into life and the job I love... I am refreshed and rejuvenated...energized & recharged...grateful for RETREAT. for more information on Padma & her retreat: www.padmayoga.ca

Living a life of

'No Tension'

Do you want more Joy in your life...more Fulfillment?? It is possible and to degrees that you have never imagined! The moment I was first introduced to the Passion Test is never far from my mind. It was at one of those pretty low points when you wonder what could happen next and what else could go wrong? How could I have gotten myself into this situation? What was I thinking? Honestly, will I ever feel the feeling of freedom and joy again!? And then this energetic lady in a pink outfit walked across the screen of my computer and a ray of sunshine peeked from behind those 'heavy' clouds! The past year and a half I have experienced such incredible joy & fulfillment that I wonder how it can be surpassed and then it is! Finding out how to 'get clear' on my Passions those things that really 'light my fire' has been amazing! Sinking down into my heart to uncover the Authentic Wendy, so freeing! And the most exciting part of the process is the 'No Tension' factor! "What", you say, "NO TENSION?" "YES", I reply..."it's possible!" And oh so incredible to be able 'to resign as general manager of the Universe'! Just ask me, and the enthusiasm will spread! Inspiring Transformation Through Love. Wendy Marr is a devoted mother, wife & lover of life! She delights in fortuitous moments of facilitating others passion discoveries. To connect: (250) 314-4106 or wlmarr@shaw.ca

My C h a ng ing B ody My Changing Practice

Towards the end of last summer I was reading a book by Michael Stone, a yogi, Buddhist and psychotherapist from Toronto. The book is called The Inner Tradition of Yoga. It is dense, but satisfying, kinda like an avocado cookie from Hello Toast in downtown Kamloops. If you have had one, you will know what I am talking about. My idea for this article was to take what I learned from this book into my life and my classes and write about it for this article. Grand plans! Well, I haven’t picked up that book since fall started. Since those crisp fall days that I wrote so fondly about back then hit, I haven’t picked up any book. I barely have time to read magazine articles. I leave tabs open on my browser for days hoping that perhaps through osmosis that I will learn about biomechanics through the keys of my laptop.

I guess what I am trying to say is that Fall was busy. I would say overwhelming even. I was teaching 8-10 classes a week, sometimes more. That is more than I have ever taught, with no kids, one kid or two. So, my grand ideas of infusing my life with the intricacies of deep yoga philosophies sort of fell by the wayside. Sort of like the hand-made rag rug I plan on crocheting my friends who got married this summer. I wrote them an IOU. It will happen when it happens. So the same goes for deeper learning in my life right now. Not all of my learning needs to come from books and we take in what we are ready for when we allow ourselves to be open to learning. I took what I was ready for from the book: samskaras. Michael Stone describes samskaras as grooves derived from past experiences in our psyche, but also in our body, that colour all future responses and behaviours. These grooves can get deep. So deep that we can’t see our way anymore and we keep making the same mistakes over and over. Parenting is a good teacher of my grooves. If I keep scolding my three year old who is acting out rather than trying to see what is causing the behaviour and giving her other options, I am probably going to get the same result. Isn’t this the definition of insanity that people float about? “I am willing to let my story change.” This was a phrase on one of those little facebook memes that went around last week. We get so attached to our stories. The stories about our childhood trauma, the stories about our heart ache, the stories about our physical injuries and ailments. We hold on to our body’s response to pain long after this response is even useful. Grooves are created. True story. So, yes I am willing, but to change my story requires me to take pause and change my responses, to take a different path. These are the little things every day. This takes self awareness. So with the New Year, a beginner mind and no expectations (or very little anyway), I will make my way back into a meditation practice. A formal one, more than focusing on my breath to get back to sleep after being woken up yet again. Just like a person getting into physical fitness after a hiatus has to put one foot in front of the other, for me it is just one inhale and one exhale, and then another. And another. And another. Tania is a 750 hour certified Hatha Teacher who has been teaching for 5 years. After having her first baby and discovering that there was no information for new moms and yoga, she has made it her mission to be better at documenting this journey and sharing it with others. You can find out more about Tania, her classes, and her other thoughts at www.groundedandsound.ca.

Detox?

By Cathy Lidster

Why Should I? Recently, Time Magazine published an article stating that detoxification is unnecessary and not helpful. I strongly differ with Time based on the following considerations: In 1989, over 6 trillion pounds of chemical toxins were dumped in North America in one year, alone. Can you imagine what havoc we have wreaked on this planet over several decades? 100% of adults today have synthetic and industrial chemicals like dioxins (bleach) and PCB's stored in our bodies. Heavy toxins like lead, cadmium, mercury and arsenic, pesticides, pollutants, pharmaceuticals, plastics and food additives are being dumped into our rivers and streams daily, and carried by air currents around the globe. Polar bears are dying from eating seals with toxins in their fat. A recent televised news report stated that "the tissues of the Inuit peoples of Greenland are classified as toxic waste." Your body is divinely designed to keep surviving as long as your spirit needs to be here and will do whatever it can within its design to handle stress and keep you surviving. With such toxic overload, your body must store what it cannot get rid of that will cause you harm and death if allowed to be assimilated. So, where does the body store toxins? In your fat cells, just like little storage sheds. Your body is protecting you by building those fat cells around your middle that you can't seem to get rid of. You know -- the flat tire that hangs over your belt even though you have tried every diet aide and get-slim-quick trick in the book. Wisely, your body will not dump fat cells unless you first get rid of the toxins. If there isn't a safe and clear exit route for those toxins, they will stay stored in your fat. Without proper tools to transform toxins into less harmful substances that can leave safely, your body will continue to store them in fat. Did you know that the trans fat in a single french fry stays in your body for 102 days? Where do you think it hangs out? So, to counteract this problem of toxification and fat storage we need to get good nutrients into our bodies, and the toxic substances out. Many people think that

fasting is a way to detoxify. Fasting may stop the burden train from piling up more stuff in your body temporarily, but it often weakens an already starved body and does not help to actually get rid of toxic burden. You then get extremely hungry and wolf down the nearest high calorie junk food in an attempt to satisfy the craving for desperately needed energy. The best way to detox the body is to provide high quality, nutrient rich foods to clean out the elimination pathways while helping the liver filter and convert toxins to water soluble compounds that can be eliminated. You will not only lose fat the safe and healthy way – you’ll feel Wonderful, Thin, More Alive and Your Body Will Thank You! X er is cape More than “Zero”!

By Jodi Latremouille

There is a common mis-pronunciation of the word xeriscaping (“zeri-scaping”), which also misleads people to believe that it is merely gardening without water. It is much more interesting than those daunting lunar images of what many of us mistakenly call “Zero-scaping!” Xeriscaping, essentially “gardening with nature,” capitalizes on the available water and resources in a region. Winter is the perfect time to start dreaming about this year’s landscaping projects.

The Seven Principles of Xeriscape 1. Planning and Design With a bare, 0.8 acre lot in the middle of town, I find myself continually drawn into the vortex of planning and design. Where to start? How to start? What do I need? How do I cover this sandy, rocky river-bed with sustainable and practical plants and features that fit our lifestyle? Focusing on our family’s needs and priorities helps me narrow down the options. Where do we want the garden, the play space, the garage, the access lanes, and the entertainment areas? I try to look at my yard in terms of usage zones, which allows me to better create a vision for our space, in both the short-term and long-term.

2. Soil Analysis and Improvements What does my soil need? Hmmm, perhaps I should be asking, “what doesn’t it need?” No matter your soil type, it will benefit from organic matter. We just keep working in the compost and manure. We are also learning to “appreciate the natural beauty” of some weeds. Although clover is traditionally considered a weed, it has regained some favour in recent years as an attractive, hardy groundcover. It is gorgeous and green and it spreads enthusiastically, covering all the bare patches in the lawn. Beware of bees, for though these little pollinating wonders are indeed welcome, they like to hide in the clover, and are a hazard to bare-footed children.

3. Practical Turf Areas We have a few small grassy patches, which we have planted with a slowgrowing, drought-resistant mix. But we live across from an elementary school with two big soccer fields. Do we really need a play area large enough to accommodate a family football game? I think the key to turf areas is that they are used on a regular basis. Otherwise, a more efficient groundcover or feature is in order.

4. Efficient Irrigation Choose your watering zones carefully. Keep the high-water gardens close to the water sources and in low, wet areas. Don’t stick a waterloving plant in the middle of a predominantly zero-water garden! Water deeply and less frequently. This encourages deep, strong, water-seeking roots in all plants, especially turf.

5. Appropriate Plant Selection Here are the top three secrets to low-maintenance xeriscaping: perennial, perennial, perennial! I want to plant something and watch it grow, spread, and take over all the bare, weedy spots in our yard, all on its own! Herbs and selected hardy annuals can add some colour while you are waiting for perennials to fill in. When shopping for plants, learn the Latin name to be sure you get the right variety, and encourage your local nursery to stock drought-resistant plants.

6. Mulching and Hardscapes Mulching is an important aspect of xeriscaping, and should be done at several intervals throughout the year. A wide variety of mulches are available, from compost to rock mulches. Be careful with rock mulches, as it is hard to extract weeds and debris from between the stones. Use hardscapes to accent your landscape and to provide useful spaces. Each year, my birthday request to my dad, who has a zen affinity to rocks of all kinds, is a natural stone feature for the yard. So far, we have done a rock pathway, herb garden, and a rock garden and gravel parking space.

7. Appropriate Maintenance The basics of maintenance are straightforward: remove all weeds; anticipate full-grown size when planting; avoid invasive plants; and select plants carefully for the climate. The ultimate goal of proper maintenance is to reduce your workload and water needs, while increasing enjoyment of your landscape. Xeriscaping must always be adapted to each region. In the Lower Mainland, xeriscaping actually includes hostas and other water-loving plants. In our semi-desert region, we can still find beautiful plants that have low-water needs and are adapted to our climate. Now is the time to start planning your dream garden, so that you will be able to put your plan into action in a few short months. Resources www.okanaganxeriscape.org is an incredible plant database, created for the Okanagan, but applicable to the Kamloops area. A Mother’s Touch

By Brittany Seibert

“A mother’s touch is the first love a child feels”

For a child, a mother’s touch provides a feeling of security, comfort and love. I think we can all agree that we have experienced this at one time or another through our own experience with our mothers, and for some, as mothers themselves. It’s amazing how a mother’s embrace can heal almost any ailment from hurt feelings to bruised knees. Scientific research is now showing how important a loving touch is to a child’s development and how the absence of it can affect the child’s wellbeing. One of the first significant studies done on the connection between touch and infants was in the 1970s performed by scientist Harry Harlow. The testing was done on young chimps and though the study has been condemned as unethical, it proved to hold valuable results. The basis of the series of experiments was to place infant chimps in isolation for various amounts of time with no other physical interaction. The ending results of the chimps varied from depression, loss of interest in things like food, behavioral/social issues and in extreme cases, death. Now even though these cases were not human infants, science is now connecting behavioral, emotional and social issues to the lack of physical and emotional attention given at a young age. Studies done in orphanages around the world where children are often subjected to diminished physical attention had higher cortisol (the stress hormone) levels than children in a nurturing family. The studies also show that these children also had varying levels of oxytocin and vasopressin, hormones responsible for emotional and social bonding. But how is touch so closely linked to human development? Neurologists have found that during infancy, touch impacts the brain, affecting short-term behavior and even long-term mental and emotional development. Physical touch triggers a release of chemicals within our bodies, and during infant development these chemicals help to build the neuropathways that stay with us into adulthood.

So what can you do to ensure your child receives adequate physical nurturing? Infant massage is a great way to achieve this, and it can help to strengthen the bond between child and primary caregiver. Infant massage can be performed at any time of the day, and can be used as part of a baby’s routine, such as prior to bed. Infant massage has been linked to helping with discomfort (such as colic), neurological development, boosting the immune system, muscle tone and growth. And the best part about it: it’s fun! Just find a relaxing area where you and your baby can be together. There is no right or wrong formula to the massage; trial and error is the best. Make notes about what your baby enjoys after each massage and use it for next time. Infant massage can also be carried on into childhood. What child wouldn’t enjoy a massage after hockey, soccer or piano practice? Just remember a parent’s arms are more comforting than anyone else’s. Restorative Yoga

by Katrina Hokule’a Ariel

Creating a Cradle of Healing Restorative Yoga is one of the most nurturing and healing practices. This approach to asana practice is especially appropriate if you are feeling run-down, stressed out, fatigued, or dealing with emotional trauma such as grief or sadness. This is an excellent way to release stuck emotions, especially in the chest openers. Why? Because when you do a restorative chest opener, you’re completely supported. Allowing the heart to be exposed can often feel vulnerable, but in restorative postures you feel safe, knowing that you can let go of anything that you don’t need any more because you are quite literally completely supported. This helps to lift depression and release anything that doesn’t serve you—just have that gentle release as your intention and breathe it into being. Also, know that it’s very normal to have emotions come up during yoga practice, so if that happens to you, remember it’s simply energy moving. Breathe. Keep breathing. Let it go. One of the great things about the supported chest openers in Restorative Yoga is that they counter the slouching position we often find ourselves in. This is wonderful for the neck, shoulders, and back! By gently stretching the muscles in the fronts of the shoulders and opening the chest, a great deal of freedom is created in the breath, circulation, and the heart chakra.

This time of year invites you to rest, nourish, and recharge your body and entire being. A wonderful way to do this is with a Restorative yoga Practice. You can include Restorative Yoga in your regular asana practice as a sweet bonus at the end, or do an entire practice of restorative poses. Restorative Yoga is especially nice in the evening as a way to unwind and help yourself get a good night’s sleep. Stay present during your practice, focusing on your breath and healing thoughts. It’s important to remember that, even though it might not seem like you’re doing much when you’re in the poses, you are communicating with your body, mind, and heart the whole time. You’re also detoxifying your body, so be sure to stay hydrated throughout the day and after your practice.

The practice on the opposite page is an excerpt from my book, Yoga for Dragon Riders. It includes restorative poses and active stretches for whole body ease and enjoyment. This practice is designed to create well being and a sense of freedom. As with anything, it is your responsibility to discern if this practice is right for you or not. NOTE: If you don’t have bolsters available to you, just gather pillows and blankets and make the same shapes for your body. Please know that bolsters are firm, so you may have to pile up quite a few pillows to get the same effect. Also, cover up with a blanket to keep warm if you are even a little bit cool. You might like to play some soothing music. At all times in these poses you should be comfortable, so make whatever adjustments necessary so that your body says, “Oh yeah, this is delicious!”

Get in shape with fun workouts and dynamic, alignment focused yoga. Feel good, de-stress, have more energy and happiness. Cultivate vibrant health and take time to care for yourself.

Savasana itself is a yoga practice.

What are the benefits of Savasana?

It’s a good thing yoga is a practice, not something you’re expected to do perfectly right off the bat—or ten years into it for that matter. In fact, you’re perfect just as you are, so don’t worry about it. Just keep doing your very best every time and you will continue to improve.

There are many benefits. Here are just a few:

One thing you should keep in mind about Savasana (pronounced “sha-vas-a-na”) is that it isn’t a collapse. There’s a difference between relaxing and collapsing. Relaxing is mindful; there is an inner fullness which the outer body, muscles, bones, organs, and so on, are held by as they soften. Collapse is not supported, and does not allow the circulation of blood, lymph, Prana, and breath that is so necessary for optimal healing. When you do Savasana, start by aligning your body as best you can. Then feel the brightness within—feel how full of life you are! Allow that inner fullness to keep you buoyant from within, then drape your outer body over it. While your inner body remains spacious, let your skin drape, your bones be heavy, your organs rest. Settle into your back body.

~ It is one of the best possible ways to de-stress and reduce anxiety. ~ It distributes blood and other vital fluids and nutrients evenly throughout your body. ~ It allows your body time to recover and assimilate the myriad benefits of your yoga practice. ~ It calms your brain and body, and it helps to lower blood pressure. ~ It can help reduce headaches, insomnia and fatigue. There’s more, but aren’t those reasons enough? Katrina Hokule’a Ariel is the author of Yoga for Dragon Riders, in which you can find much more about how yoga can help you walk your own path of happiness. Katrina teaches everything from restorative yoga and private yoga therapy to challenging classes and Yoga Boot Camp (a.k.a. Peaceful Warrior Training). Find the book at www.YogaForDragonRiders.com, and Katrina’s class info below.

And then, in this relaxed yet illuminated state, breathe. Feel your breath enter and leave. Notice how your body pulses with the breath and how that feels. Notice that by focusing on certain areas of your body with your breath, these parts of your body relax further. Any time your mind wanders, gently and lovingly bring it back to the breath. The practice of Savasana brings you the most benefits when you are present in the moment. Let your awareness Katrina float on your breath. Feel every Hokule’a cell in your body sparkle with healing and vitality!

Resolution Revolution By Brittanya Beddington

It’s that time of year again, when society tells us it is important to set new goals for a fresh new year. But do you remember last years’ goals? Do you only remember them because you failed miserably and went back to your old habits within a few weeks last January? Fear not, you are not alone in this. Our society is one of procrastination: I’ll start on Monday; next week I’ll get going; the New Year will be a great time to begin my new goals. Why are we putting these, often health enhancing, goals off? I can only offer an observation. We are living in a state of overwhelm. Society has produced dramatic improvements in science and technology, and the rate of technological advancement just continues to pick up speed. We can now communicate with and receive news from all parts of the world, whether we are in front of our computer or just holding our phones. We each feel the societal pressure to maintain constant communication, to stay up-to-date on the latest news/products/ technology/social media, and still maintain our normal everyday lives. As a woman you might find yourself even more overwhelmed, knowing that you should be maintaining these things and taking care of your family in the best way possible, like those other people on Facebook are doing, so they say. How could you not feel overwhelmed by the excess of information that is constantly bombarding you at home, on the drive/bike/walk to work, in the office, and at the gym? It is impossible to escape the news, avoid the marketing, and turn down the racket of the world. While at the same time it can be difficult to ignore the fact that you should be doing things perfectly since you can find the howto on that perfection online, in a simple stepby-step format. Everything is simpler and more available, but that simplicity comes with excess, expectation, and overwhelm. So

if you were feeling guilty about not completing those goals last year, you can give yourself a little hug and apologize for being so hard on yourself. You just fell into the overwhelm trap. The overwhelm trap is easy to set. We tend to be a goal-oriented society and goals can be helpful, so we set ourselves up, choosing a time to start (Monday, next week, New Years) that can always be pushed back, dreaming of a quick plan, and then setting our generally unreachable goal. I speak here from experience, so there is no judgment in these words. However, I think that it’s time for us to stop the madness! As Albert Einstein said, insanity is “doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.” So let us stop setting the same old trap and start setting and achieving goals that work for us. Step 1. Set an achievable goal. It is always great to dream big, but expecting to lose 50 pounds in 1 month is not a reasonable goal. If you want to lose 50 pounds set a goal to lose it in 2013, or to lose 5 pounds a month, or better yet, to lose inches from your waist or reduce your percentage of body fat. Make your goal something that you know you can achieve, but you know you will have to work at to achieve. Step 2. Create a solid plan. Instead of thinking about what you might do, get serious about your plan. Write it down, create a timetable, schedule time for your goal in your day planner, and tell your friends and family so they can help keep you accountable. Schedule time to check-in and see how you are doing with your goal. Step 3. Start today. Do not set a time for yourself to start, just start right away. When you set a time to start you create a build-up and allow yourself to make excuses. Stop it. Start right now.

Step 4. Make it habitual. Take small steps to make your goal a habit. If it is to have better balance this year, start balancing every time you brush your teeth; if it is to eat healthier, replace one unhealthy meal every day with something green; if it is to lose weight, start your day with 15 minutes of exercise. Create one small habit and once it is solid, add a new one! Do not give yourself ten things to do a day and expect that you are going to be able to do that and everything else in your hectic life every single day; you will be setting yourself up for failure. Step 5. Visualize. Take a few minutes every day to visualize yourself achieving your goal. Either when you wake up in the morning or right before you go to sleep at night are great times to take the time. See yourself achieving the goal and allow yourself to feel how great you will feel when it is accomplished. The more you can experience those feelings the closer you will be to achieving your goal, since in reality, your goal is to achieve a feeling that will come from the action.

If you read through those steps and still have 101 excuses why you need to wait to start your goal, then you need to take a minute and decide whether you want your ego to run the rest of your life. We can all think of excuses, great excuses, but those people who take immediate action are the ones who are going to get the best results. So get going, take some action, begin to feel the great feeling of achieving your goals, and spread your feelings of joy far and wide! After all, if it’s you and not your ego that is in charge, your ultimate goal will be a more joyful, peaceful, loving world! Happy 2013! Winter Wellness By Brittney Matte

As the holiday season winds down, sometimes winter can leave us feeling deflated physically, emotionally and financially. Here are a few ideas to keep you balanced in body, mind, and wallet too!

Drink up!

Many of us have taken in our fair share of

holiday beverages that taste so good but happen to be laden in fat, alcohol and sugar. Lets lighten up with some deliciously hydrating herbal tea. Try peppermint to help with digestion, dandelion for its detoxifying effects, or lemon balm to soothe and calm. Replenish those electrolytes by trying coconut water, or for an antioxidant boost, green tea is always yummy choice.

Soak Who doesn't love a good bath? Especially this time of the year a warm soak can be very beneficial. Soothing your tired achy muscles, boosting your immune system and simply quieting your mind are just a few ways a bath can aid in your wellness. Make your soak extra decadent by adding some Epsom or Dead Sea salts to help with detoxification.

Give yourself a hand

Self-massage is a won-

derful way to reconnect with your body and alleviate tension throughout this chilly weather. Take a few minutes each day just to say "thank you" to your physical self by giving those traps a nice squeeze, circling your fingers over your temples and scalp, or even kicking off your shoes and rolling a ball underneath your feet while you're at your work desk.

Walk it off

Most people don't think of walking as a

spiritual endeavor, but why not make it one? A simple walk is not only wonderful for gently lubricating your hip and knee joints, it's also a great way to get in touch with nature. Be mindful of your breathing and truly take in everything the outdoors has to offer and

18 www.InteriorWellness.com | Interior wellness | Winter 2013

how it affects all five of your senses. As an added bonus, taking a stroll in the day will help nourish your body with some much needed vitamin D that so many of us lack in these dark winter months.

Sweat Baby, Sweat

Whether it be in the sauna, an

Epsom salt bath, at the gym or dancing up a storm in your living room, sweating is such a great way to get rid of those toxins lingering in your body, unclog your pores and fight off infection (among other benefits).

Give a little bit A 2008 study by Harvard Business School found that giving money to someone else actually increased the participant’s happiness more than just spending it on themselves. Generosity, such as giving to a charity, has also been linked to releasing endorphins in the brain creating what is known as the "helper's high". Obviously no one needs a study to know how good it feels to give but sometimes life moves so fast we forget. This doesn't mean just financially. Help out a friend in need, contact your community and find out who could use a hand, donate your time somewhere or simply just give a compliment. As Anne Frank has said, "No one has ever become poor by giving". These are just a few simple (and virtually free) ideas to make your season a little more peaceful. Whether you're a winter person or not, try to embrace this beautiful time of year. It's a perfect time to reflect, reconnect, and recharge. Curl up with your favorite book, write in your journal, get in touch with old friends, or do whatever makes you feel good. Winter will be over before we know it, and we'll soon be craving those chilly nights and short days when we could truly submerge into our winter wellness. Brittney Matte is owner/operator of Studio Massage and Spa in downtown Kamloops. She absolutely loves her work and has a passion for wellness. Brittney stays sane during the winter months with lots of yoga, walks with her dog, snowboarding and plenty of tea. Holistic Weight Loss A balanced approach to reaching your ideal body weight By Leanne Oaten

If you have been struggling to release unwanted pounds and inches, and have tried countless weight-loss programs, and diets, and include regular exercise into your life, but the pounds won’t budge, read on. For many people, losing weight means decreasing the numbers on the scale, however, it is more beneficial to look at the extra weight you may be carrying as a side affect of a deeper imbalance going on within the body. Equally important is to redirect the focus from the scale to developing the mindset of wanting to be well from the inside out. When we are in balance, and care for ourselves mind, body & soul, weight and fat loss happens naturally with ease. The components of following a Holistic Weight Loss program are many, but here are some of the main points to focus on:

Nutrition Eat a diet rich in plant foods and minimal animal products. Avoid dairy, red meat and sugar, and all processed foods as much as possible. There is no such thing as perfection however, so just strive to do your best to eat as close to nature as possible. Use how you feel after eating a certain food to guide your food choices.

Restoration & Relaxation Make time every single day to do something to replenish yourself. Proper self -care is essential for total health and well-being.

Thought Patterns Focus on the positive and fill your mind with happy thoughts. Habitual, negative thinking is toxic to the body.

Emotional Express your emotions, heal unresolved hurt from the past, and address any emotional eating issues. All the other points will have minimal affect if emotional eating is present.

to believe everything happens for a reason, and to find the meaning in all that happens to us.

Treating Imbalances Some weight issues are related to imbalances in the body such as a Thyroid disorder, Adrenal Insufficiency, Hormone Imbalance, Blood sugar imbalance, Inflammation within the body, and toxin build-up. Work with a Naturopath and/or your family Doctor to address and diagnose any of these issues that may be hindering your progress. One more thing to add to this list is to learn to love and accept yourself! When you love yourself exactly how you are today, despite perceived flaws, everything flows beautifully in your life, and that is where the real transformation begins. When you truly love who you are, you make good choices, and take good care of your body, mind & soul with love. And it all eventually falls into place. Leanne is a Registered Professional Counsellor, Certified Weight Trainer, and Certified Reiki Practitioner. Your Pilates Journey ...How to Begin

By Christine Waterman

Most people are still unsure about what Pilates really is. The easiest answer or guess for most is to liken it to yoga. This is not the case. Pilates and Yoga while both very beneficial, have very different origins and histories and repertoire. Pilates is an integrated movement system created by Joseph Pilates that works in a different way to other fitness techniques. It targets the deeper, smaller muscles versus working the larger, mobilizing muscles of the body thus building strength from the inside out. Pilates rebalances the body and helps bring it into correct alignment, improving posture. With the focus and precision of the movements, it will help to reshape your body, creating longer, more toned muscles. Pilates will also improve your core, achieving perfect balance between strength and flexibility, and is a great way to relieve unwanted stress and tension. Pilates is a great addition to the already conditioned athlete looking for that extra edge or for someone who is coming from a place of injury. Pilates is a great form of rehabilitation. If you have been thinking about starting your Pilates journey, here are some helpful hints to get you on your way. First, do your due diligence. Pilates is a great form of exercise for any body. The

! Nemw una

Ya Rolling y Bod lasses c

aim is to generate heat with the breath to facilitate change within the body. The oxygenation of blood cells is the beginning of the healing process. Tension is released and imbalances corrected. From low back pain, shoulder, knee or hip pain, rehabilitation from injury or a host of other issues, Pilates can help. Second, look for an instructor who has a quality certification. Many training programs will require just a minimum of 40 hours to achieve certification to begin teaching. In the Pilates industry, this is referred to as ‘the weekend warrior workshop’. A quality certification starts with a minimum of 450 hours of tuition and goes up from there. Third, don’t be afraid to try more than one instructor. You have to have a good feeling about who is teaching you. You need to feel you can trust them and that they have your best interest at heart. Pilates is about creating change from within. As the body goes through some of these changes, it can have a dramatic effect on one’s psyche. Fourth, do at least one private. This is for both your benefit and your instructor’s. By taking a private, you will get a much better idea of what moving from your center is all about. Your habits and muscle patterns can be highlighted so you are aware of

what needs to be changed. Also, a private gives your instructor a better picture of how you move. They will be aware of your patterns and be more specific with their cues to help you in a group setting if that is how you choose to move forward. Finally, make a commitment. Trying Pilates just once in a group setting is not enough for some people to make the required connections. Pilates is intelligent exercise and requires thought and intent prior to making a movement. If you are coming to your first class after a busy day’s work, chances are your mind will wander and not be 100% focused on you. If this is the case, the essence of the work will get missed. Joseph Pilates said “In 10 sessions you will feel the difference, in 20 you will see the difference and in 30 you will have a whole new body.” However Pilates is marketed, whether it’s to gain strength in any sport or just to better your alignment, give Pilates a try. What pain have you got to lose? What sort of life will you gain? Christine Waterman has been teaching Pilates now for 12 years. She co-owns The PILATES Tree - a fully equipped studio in downtown Kamloops, and has ample experience with many different client types and issues. Ma rk S tep h en s

...on Yoga By Mark Stephens

Doing yoga and teaching yoga are inextricably intertwined. The experiences we have on our yoga mats help us to refine our personal practice and provide insights into how we might best share yoga with others. The farther we go in our practice, the more we discover the vast universe of elements that are at play in yoga’s incredible potential for enhancing our lives. In the interrelation of these elements we come to specific practices—sequences of actions—that have different effects depending on how it all flows together. This brings us to several questions: • What are the elements of a complete practice? • How are they best structured to make the practice most accessible, sustainable, and transforming? • What are the best ways to begin a yoga practice session? • What should each session include? • What are the best ways to sequence different asanas, breathing practices, and meditations? • What is the relationship between this asana and that asana? How does this asana affect that asana? • What are the effects of asanas ordered in a particular way compared to the same asanas ordered differently? • What are the relationships within and between families of asanas—standing asanas, core asanas, arm balances, back bends, twists, forward bends, hip openers, and inversions? • What about pranayama (conscious breathing) and meditation practices? •What affects them, and how in turn do they affect what follows? • On what basis—other than habit, intuition, or whim—should one determine the overall structure and sequence of a complete class? • What about moving from one class to the next

across the span of a week, a month, a year, or a lifetime? • What are the best ways to design classes for a lifetime of yoga? Superficially simple, these questions about sequencing decisions are as complex as the beautifully diverse mosaic of human beings doing yoga. Age, genetics, lifestyle, physical and mental condition, environmental setting, personal intention, and spiritual philosophy all come into play in doing yoga. Moreover, some of these variables can change from day to day, inviting or even requiring us to modify what we’re doing—or at least how we do what we’re doing. Taking a holistic perspective on yoga, it’s vitally important to give experiential and thoughtful consideration to all of these myriad elements, which, when properly blended together, lead to healthy, wholesome, and sustainable yoga practices in which students more and more come to a place of balance along their yoga path and in their larger lives. The primary roles of a yoga teacher are showing students a yogic pathway and offering them guidance along that path. Doing this with inspiration, knowledge, skill, patience, compassion, and creativity defines a good teacher. The many elements of teaching—creating a safe space for self-exploration, crafting class sequences that take students on physical and energetic journeys, cueing students in their process of refinement, offering practical guidance in meditation, offering examples for extending the practice off the mat— collectively lead to the same thing: yoga as a process for awakening to the truth of one’s being, to an abiding sense of equanimity amid the shifting tides of daily experience and the seasons of one’s life.

If yoga were a practice of attainment in which we were all aiming for a certain goal, the role of the teacher would be much simpler. We would tell students what to do and how to do it. Sequences would be prescribed even as we would draw from our knowledge of yoga philosophy, energetics, anatomy, and psychology to craft classes and instructions that correctly orient students in moving toward the goal. In the physical practice, instruction would focus on the perfection poses; in pranayama we would teach the perfection of breath and energetic balance; in meditation we would teach students to still the mind. But yoga is not a practice of attainment; it is an unending process of self-discovery and self-transformation. In this process, teachers are facilitators and guides who offer insightful encouragement to each student along his or her unique path as it evolves, breath by breath. The art and science of teaching yoga is creatively expressed in how you craft asana, pranayama, and meditation sequences that honor the needs and intentions of the students in your classes. Your creativity is given form by yoga philosophy, the style of yoga you are teaching, the biomechanics and energetic requirements and effects of asanas, and by your personal sense of purpose in meaningfully sharing yoga. Here we look to use our full palette of knowledge and skills to create classes that resonate with the needs and expressed intentions of students, offering them a clearer pathway to more radiant well-being. Winter is a Time for Feather Dusters...

An Exploration of the Koshas

By Joy Demsey

Often the changes we want to take on this time of year are hard to sustain. Perhaps by now you have already set and broken your New Year's resolution. Why not try addressing your “self “ instead of just changing your habits? Yogic wisdom says we should not take on these New Year's attempts to change ourselves, but instead we should focus on discovering our true nature. But for true change we need to delve deeper into self-understanding. Yogis talk about the self, consisting of Koshas or sheaths. These layers are what we connect with as our “self”. These layers can be seen like a set of 5 lampshades over a light (the self). As we clean off the dust (personality attachments) our true self becomes more clear. The first layer is the Annamaya Kosha or physical body. We may spend most of our spiritual time on

this one. It is the primal instincts: food, sex, sleep and self-preservation. As yogis we must work to bring balance to our diet, sleep, cleansing practices and physical activity. We do not want these instincts to control us. The following Kosha is Pranamaya Kosha or energy levels. If you have ever felt a release in a yoga class you begin to feel the power of what is inside this level. The quality of everyday breathing is very important and can lead to an inner state of balance. In this layer, we work with energy levels, pain and stress. The next three Koshas are the ones of the mind and require us to use meditation techniques. Manomaya Kosha or thoughts and emotions, involves making mental associations, bringing memories into awareness and receiving sense impressions. Next time you are lying in final relaxation in your yoga class notice your thoughts. Vignanamaya Kosha is the level of memories. This is the level where we discriminate our thoughts and apply wisdom. You may know someone with a good sense of “street smarts”. Yogis say that we can all have access to this decision making from a place that is more in tune with the world around us. Anandamaya Kosha is the level of Bliss/happiness. After a yoga class have you ever felt a sense of peace and contentment? Often it does not last beyond the parking lot. The more you practice properly however, the brighter this understanding becomes. This is not “the self” but another layer, as a sense of bliss would also give rise to its opposite: a sense of pain. The inner light within us is beyond this duality. Finally we have moved inward to the self. Only with very dedicated practice can one achieve this understanding. Sages describe it as “sat” or truth, bringing the self beyond impermanence. Enlightenment. Why not use this winter to undertake a challenge to allow you to recognize the habits that make up your layers. You do not need full enlightenment to receive the benefits. Starting this process you will notice changes in yourself. Try 30 or 60 consecutive days of yoga practice. Begin a meditation practice. The key is to recognize then push the boundaries of your comfortable habits to realize they are not the only you. Never mind the resolutions, get out your feather duster and see the true beauty within you this winter. Joy Demsey has been teaching yoga for 14 years and studying yoga for almost 25 years. She currently works at Kamloops Hot Yoga studio where she is an instructor and manager.

Spiritual Pilgrimage

...Longing and Call By Val Theroux

Pilgrimage as an internal process and / or physical journey to sacred spaces and places, begins with a longing; a silent, deep unremitting yearning of the soul; a keening of heart for healing; a pull for balance and harmony seeking peace within “self”. Because the longing comes from deep within a space known only on the edges of consciousness, this feeling can be illusive and difficult to articulate, pinpoint or justify in the seemingly “everything’s fine” life commonly presented to the world. If you are selfless and bound by the needs of others it can be difficult to acknowledge or consider this longing, let alone make time and space to respond. Striving to make life joyful and meaningful for everyone else, you may engage in self criticism and wonder why your life feels lacking. You may even be silently challenged with despondency or episodes of depression or spiritual distress. This is not to say that everyone needs to pack a bag and travel off to places unknown to relieve their inner darkness. With longing, this sense of “stuck-ness” may trigger indescribable searching for an elusive path to authenticity. It may present itself as a spiritual prodding of the “self” brought on by a frayed, strained or absent connection to Divine Source, Spirit or Oneness with Life. “The Call” is a knowing on some level of your being, your “internal hearing response” to longing, an invitation to mystery, the title for an adventure of the soul, an embracing of the unknown within. More than that, it is your place of beginning, a direction for imagined forward movement and direct dialogue with your inner self and Spirit, however that is for you. Acknowledging the call is the first step out of inertia and into action although understanding may be slow to follow. My longing and call to pilgrimage came after a period of grief following the death of my mother in 2006. The sometimes unconscious longing, comes when we feel emptiness, loss of a part of ourselves, an incompleteness or lack of esteem. This loss of part of ourselves can follow the loss of a loved one to death or divorce, a change in a significant relationship, role, work, life transition or simply a recognition that “there is more” to growing a meaningful, fulfilling life and reaching your full potential.

through ancestral roots. I was surprised by the profound response to the land from the deepest part of my being. Is this past lifetimes or ancestral memories? If I can have eye and hair colour from generations back, then why can I not also have the feelings and memories of my ancient grandmothers and their ancient landscapes within my DNA? Understanding pilgrimage takes time and self evaluation more than books, although reading other peoples accounts of pilgrimage has assisted me greatly in my own articulating attempts and evolving wholeness. The Quickening ~ Releasing Old Programs

We are in the midst of a quickening. Our developmental stages are happening so quickly now that there is not a lot of time to reflect. As soon as we have a grasp on whatever new lesson has just been received or transition that has just been made...we are up and onto the next.

Marion (Mugs) McConnell from Scotch Creek, received a Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee medal for offering nearly 40 years of Yoga in Canada and abroad. Mugs is the co-director and Primary Teacher Trainer for the South Okanagan Yoga Academy (SOYA) and the Canadian Representative for International Yoga Teachers’ Association (IYTA). “On October 9th a wonderful group of friends gathered in Penticton to share with me the honour of my receiving a Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal for offering nearly 40 years of Yoga in Canada and abroad said Mugs. Students, family and friends came from as far away as Vancouver, Bowen Island, Kamloops, and Salmon Arm, as well as nearby Kelowna, Summerland, Oliver, Kaleden, Okanagan Falls, Naramata and Penticton. “My heart overflowed to see some of my very first students from 1978, and more recent students from just this past year. www.soyayoga.com for more info on Mugs and her teachings!

There is no down-time because the energy that is coming to our planet is increasing to its precipice. The cosmic light waves that are hitting out planet now are so full of information that our bodies and minds must work hard to keep up. With every download of this light information that we receive, we have to shift in order to maintain its original pattern. Like a computer receiving new software updates (light information) we have to increase our space for data within, and we do this by unloading unused or unwanted "programs".

“...it is important to allow the release

and to LET GO In order to release these programs (old memories, regrets, stories, fears, habits, etc) from our system, we have to release them on a cellular level. Our "programs" or stories attach themselves to our cellular structure, and become a part of our operating system. When there is no use for them anymore, the stories and emotions themselves begin to surface in order to be released. The pain and fears that are linked to these stories all of a sudden rise up into our conscious awareness, and we abruptly feel different. There is then a change in the way we are thinking and the way that we see the world around us. It can be very uncomfortable to experience emotions that seem to have no real place in our present lives. They come up unannounced and disrupt our perceived progress. But the way through this is to NOT re-attach to these stories and emotions by replaying them over and over, but to recognize that they are just energy in the midst of release. As the emotions, memories and stories flicker through our hearts and minds, it is important to allow the release and to LET GO. We can help ourselves by honoring the "programs" for what they taught us, then letting go of what no longer serves us because we are different now. As our cells make room for more light information, and our old stories continue to disappear, we will make faster personal transitions and evolutionary leaps. We can take the necessary moments we need to look within and discern what is really happening in our hearts. It is not as crazy as it may feel; it is actually a very natural process. We are all becoming who we are meant to be - who we already are and always have been. Teresa Brownrigg loves the work and energy of Peruvian Shamanism and has been initiated into the lineage of the Incan tradition. Presently she holds a Bachelor degree in Metaphysical Sciences and on her journey to obtain her Doctorate, so she can be of any assistance to others walking their spiritual path. t_brownrigg@hotmail.com

Pilates

for a Pain Free Posture By Cassie Marchuk

Pilates pinpoints these postural deviations and helps participants discover their correct or “neutral” alignment. Relearning the body’s neutral position is imperative because it is the optimal position for the body to function. When the body is in the correct position, the right muscles fire or the proper “turning-on” of the muscles is achieved. For back pain sufferers a lot of the time their deep core is not firing properly simply because of the position of their pelvis.

I have been teaching Pilates for over ten years now and still the number one reason clients come to my studio is back pain. For many, their back pain is hard to pinpoint as it affects multiple areas of their back and the onset of symptoms varies. Sometimes a diagnosis has been given and sometimes it remains a mystery. All they know is, it just hurts!

Once participants learn neutral body awareness, Pilates exercises challenge and strengthen the muscles needed to maintain this posture. Through consistent, repetitive moves that reinforce alignment Pilates begins to re-wire the body to follow a more optimal pattern of movement. Previously overused muscles become more flexible and elongated and underused muscles become toned and stronger. Your deep core starts firing, posture improves and tension is lessened. This is the “magic” of Pilates. Pilates simply brings you back to how your body should function, naturally, and pain free. Cassie Marchuk is the Owner of Evolve Pilates Studio, offering specific “WellBacks” and Posture focused classes. www.evolvepilatesstudio.com 250.372.7237

Chronic back pain has many causes but it could be as simple as poor postural alignment. Our bodies were not meant to be hunched over a computer all day, bent over while picking up heavy objects, or doing small repetitive tasks that habitually overuse some muscles while under using others.

“In Pilates we start simply with body awareness.”

UnlimitedPackages Packages+ +Punch PunchCards Cardsare areavailable! available! Unlimited All of these repetitive patterns create imbalances throughout our bodies that actually affect the way we move day to day and virtually change our alignment. Improper alignment leads to poor posture, increased stress on joints, and ultimately to pain. The good news is: with Pilates, proper alignment can be re-learned! In Pilates we start simply with body awareness. Consider sitting in a chair for longer than 10 minutes, what starts to happen? You go from sitting up tall to slumped down, with your pelvis tucked under and lower back pressed into the chair. This tucking of the low back affects all the way up the spine, your shoulders start to slouch, and finally your head juts forward to keep your eyes on your work. If this posture is done habitually the body starts to take that shape permanently.

I had no idea that chiropractic

could help with THAT‌ By Dr. Robert F Conroy

Since becoming chiropractors, my wife (Dr. Lisa) and I have always visualized helping pregnant women, children and families experience healthier and happier lives through wellness chiropractic care. Once we started in practice, some of the most common responses we hear are “I had no idea that chiropractic care could help with that. “I was told this is normal and it may stop with time. The reality is simply most people aren’t aware that the benefits of chiropractic care extend well beyond neck pain, back pain or headaches. The “nerve first approach The spine houses the nervous system, the brain, spinal cord, and spinal nerves which connect the brain to every cell tissue and organ in the body. The nervous system controls and coordinates how our bodies grow, heal, and adapt. If there is any interference with the nervous system the ability to conduct business as usual is diminished, and symptoms can occur. Chiropractors, through a series of specific spinal adjustments, can help to remove interference with the nervous system allowing the body to function at a higher level. Why guess when we can measure? To see if you or your child has nerve interference, chiropractors can use technologies to safely assess how the spine and nervous system are functioning together as a unit. The first assessment will then be used as a baseline, which can be compared to future scans to determine how you or your child is responding to care. Chiropractic and pregnancy The pregnant mother’s body is in a continual state of adaptation as it prepares to bring a new life into the world. As the pregnancy progresses, the body releases a cascade of hormones that will create laxity in the joints of the mother’s body allowing the pelvis to relax. Once relaxed, the birth canal can open making a safe passage for the baby and healthy vaginal birth possible. Unfortunately, this may allow the pelvis to twist which can create low back, pelvic and pubic bone pain [1] as well as a narrowed birth canal, setting the stage for birth interventions and more invasive methods of delivery [2].

That is why it is so important for mothers to make sure that their pelvis is in proper alignment, and the nervous system is functioning at its best to help ensure they will have the best chances of a healthy natural pregnancy. Pediatric chiropractic care A recent study showed that 80% of births which required intervention by a doctor (excessive force, vacuum, or forceps methods) resulted in upper cervical injuries [3]. This is why it is important to get your baby’s spine and nervous system checked by a chiropractor trained to assess and adjust children. Infants can be adjusted right after birth, or as early as possible. Once nervous system function is restored, injury caused from the birthing process can begin to heal properly. Possible symptoms and conditions chiropractic can help with ADD/ADHD, asthma, birth traumas, bed wetting, colic, constipation, coordination problems, ear infections, feeding difficulties, general well-being, headaches, sleeping difficulties [2, 3, 4]. How do chiropractors adjust babies and children? The answer: very gently. Very little force is required to make a specific spinal adjustment to a baby as their spines are still developing, and they do not have years of poor posture and gravity working against them. Chiropractors who are trained to adjust infants and children use safe, effective, and very gentle adjusting techniques. Ever wonder if chiropractic care is right for you and your whole family? On February 2nd, 2013- Inspire Chiropractic & Wellness Studio is holding a “Family Wellness Day where anyone in the Kamloops and the surrounding communities can receive a free, posture analysis nervous system assessment, scoliosis screening, backpack safety, as well as a coloring contest and crafts for the kids. For those outside of the Kamloops area To find a chiropractor in your community who is trained to adjust pregnant woman and children, go to the International Chiropractic Pediatrics Association website: http://icpa4kids.org/Find-a-Chiropractor/ References: 1.) Anxiety

A Tool for Success

By Isabelle Hamptonstone

Problem: Each day our thoughts present us with an opportunity to be anxious. Often we feel anxiety and worry about a particular part of ourselves and/or our sport or business. Often we feel powerless to control this anxiety. In this article, we learn how to not only take back the power, but also to use the anxiety to our own advantage. From here we can start to make a huge difference to our day to day lives and to use anxiety to our advantage. The key here is what goes on in the mind, and is a challenge many of the sports professionals and business executives I work with have come up against. Education: The answer to almost every mental challenge faced by us all is hidden in the subconscious mind. This is the part of the mind that is very powerful, and is far less easy to communicate directly with than the conscious mind. With training, this becomes easier. My Tip: I advise you to be aware that anxiety is a poke from the unconscious mind that it is time to focus on what you DO want. When we take a look at what is happening when we are anxious, we find that we are focusing on what we DON’T want with our thoughts. So if an athlete is anxious about his performance – guess what their subconscious mind is going to offer up? – Yep you’ve guessed it – examples of poor performance! Learning: Here’s the learning folks – USE ANXIETY AS A TOOL. Becoming anxious tells you categorically to change your focus to the positive. If you have a competition or important event coming up and you feel uneasy, gently refocus on a positive outcome. Do this each and every single time an anxious thought comes up for you. It will take repetition. Every new movement does. This will be you training your “memory muscle”.

Hawaiian Massage for Health and Wellness By Kathy Richins

Massage has for many years been used to support the health and wellness of an individual. Athletes regularly seek out massage to relieve pain and promote quick recovery to sore muscles. Individuals with chronic pain often report that long-term massage helps to reduce their pain. Recently, Dr. Mark Tarnopolsky and other Canadian researchers at McMaster University in Hamilton found evidence at the cellular level that massage blunts muscle pain in a similar way to anti-inflammatory pills. It is possible that massage could also help the elderly, those suffering from musculoskeletal injuries, those suffering from depression or the winter blahs, and people with chronic inflammatory disease. Further research and testing in this area is increasing. Most importantly, massage just plain feels good. There are many different kinds of massage, and one that goes back to the ancient traditions of the Hawaiian people is Lomi Lomi massage. Mana Lomi is a form of Lomi Lomi and is indigenous Hawaiian mind-body-spirit healing massage with a philosophical foundation in the relationship between people and all natural things. Dr. Maka’ala Yates, an indigenous Hawaiian medicine practitioner, developed it. He learned from his elders in Kona, Hawaii and apprenticed for 16 years with Auntie Margaret Machado, a revered Lomi Master. Mana Lomi is done with bone deep, yet gentle touch. It has been called “Hawaiian Spiritual Massage” or “Life-force of Lomi.” According to Dr. Maka’ala, Lomi or Lomilomi describes a concept that involves the movement of energy. His web site, http://www.alohalomiacademy.com/manalomi/, states that “the concept of ‘communicating down to the bones’ physically and energetically is significant. It gives room for the client to allow the practitioner to go as deep as they can tolerate, yet be non-invasive while achieving the desired outcome.” The bone deep and penetrating muscle specific massage is gentle and practitioners use their body weight and mana (life energy). The therapy can be used for treatment work in a medical setting as well as for relaxation or health maintenance massage. Modest draping is always used. In the 1800’s, the traditional people of Hawaii were forced to go underground to practice Lomi Lomi, which was considered by the missionaries and new government to be “sorcery.” It is now receiving more attention, and Kathy Richins (who was born in Hawaii) is bringing this relaxation and wellness massage to Kamloops after training at the Ho’omana Spa in Maui with Jeana Iwalani Naluai last year. Jeana states on her web site: “From a Hawaiian Perspective, our back bone is a symbol of an ancestral connection and the stability offered as a result of ancestral support. The intention behind the work is that by bringing the physical body into alignment, there is a space held for the spiritual, emotional, and mental bodies to also realign (http://www.halehoomana.com).

It’s the same in life and work as in sport. Daily I check in with my own thoughts. Often the first sign I have that my thoughts are not optimum is when I realize I feel uncomfortable or uneasy. As soon as I realize that’s happening I know I have allowed my mind to wander to thoughts that bring me no success.

In this new year, choose to focus on prevention and wellness and make a commitment to your own health and wellness by giving yourself the treat of a relaxing Hawaiian massage. Kathy Richins, Bodymind Centre, (250) 574-7521, www.findstrengthinaction.com

Enjoy thinking yourself into being positive, after all you train your body each day and you are an amazing individual – why not use mental training as a tool to give you your edge to win? Train yourself to have an awesome day!

What is Breath Integration?

Breath integration is a method of counselling that allows self-examination. It is an opportunity to see how our decisions have shaped our lives. As we use the Breath technique, our awareness level increases. This allows us to hear our subconscious thoughts, feel the emotions around them and change the belief, creating better results now.

and

I am always excited to welcome a New Year and as I write this article we are just welcoming 2013. I have been asked many times, what do I feel that this year will bring for humanity? There are so many possibilities, but what I see and what I know is that the biggest changes will be in the heart chakra. As we move into a new energetic era, it may almost seem as if there is a requirement to open your heart more fully. We are moving into a time where each of us will need more nurturing energy, a softer, gentler approach as we speak to ourselves and to each person and situation we encounter. I feel that right now there has never been a better or a more important time to awaken to the song of your heart, your authentic state of being; your Divine self.

When you begin to explore your Divine self, the authenticity of your soul, you will naturally begin to feel more empowered. When we feel fear, stress, worry, anger, guilt, hopeless, powerless, any of those negative emotions, we are not tuned into our Divine and Holy self. When you are feeling and operating through your life with these thoughts and feelings, it is like an alarm clock alerting you to the fact that something in your life is not working for you. Allow yourself to explore the possibility that there may be an easier way to navigate the waters of life; in essence, there is an easier way to flow. Are you living your life being true to who you really are? Do you experience joy on a daily basis? Do you do the things that bring you joy? Do you even know what brings you joy? These are just some of the important questions that we can ask ourselves to get closer to who we really are, but so many people spend more time worrying about responsibilities, finances, time constraints, the opinions of others and a contingency of distractions rather than spending time exploring their soul. When you begin to explore your Divine self, the authenticity of your soul, you will naturally begin to feel more empowered. There are times within our world that we can feel powerless or deeply fearful and it is in those times that we are experiencing

separation from our Divine self, from our source energy and from each other. We were not placed here to be separate from one another or to believe in the mentality of “survival of the fittest. We were placed here to work together, to cooperate harmoniously and for each of us to be our authentic peaceful and loving Divine selves. The more that you open your heart, be gentle with yourselves, with everyone you meet, you are opening your heart and extending love. That is your purpose, to help expand the universe with love. Every time that you love what you are doing, every time you laugh, smile, hug, share, meditate, dance, sing, spend time in nature, you are opening your heart chakra. When you do this, shifts within your perception occur and you will find that miracles begin happening all around you. When you extend love, you are incredibly powerful. Never underestimate the power of your heart. As you extend love, as I extend love, as your neighbours extend love, together we will create the changes that we wish to see. May you follow your heart and find joy in the moment, Happy New Year!

Mindfulness-Based Art Therapy Mindfulness-Based Art Therapy (MBAT) is a new form of therapy that combines Mindfulness based Counselling and Art Therapy together. The field of Mindfulness-Based Art Therapy is relatively new, but shows promising results in research. Monti et al. (2006) ran a study using Mindfulness-Based Art Therapy with breast cancer survivors. This was an 8-week program that combined mindfulness based meditation with supportive group art therapy. They found that as compared to the control group, those who experienced art therapy showed decrease in distress and increase in quality of life. In my personal and professional experience practicing mindfulness and art together opens pathways to creativity and relaxation and fosters feelings of integration and wholeness. Jon-Kabat Zinn, a well known doctor and author of several books on Mindfulness has helped a great number of people with his mindfulness-based stress reduction programs. He states “Practicing Mindfulness is… “To simply “drop in” on the actuality of your lived experience and then to sustain it as best as you can moment by moment, with intentional openhearted presence and suspension of judgment and distraction” (Kabat-Zinn, 2003). He identifies the 7 key attitudes of mindfulness as: non-judging, patience, beginner’s mind, trust, non-striving, acceptance, and letting go. Art Therapy is a form of therapy that enables people to explore thoughts and feelings and achieve insight through creative expression. The focus in a session is on the creative process, rather than on producing a creative product. As the art therapist I hold a non-judgmental and accepting attitude toward all images that arise. There are no “wrong” images. I provide guidance and make suggestions as we explore and inquire into the artwork, but ultimately my view is that the client is the expert on the meaning of his or her artwork. Some Art Therapy activities include collage with magazine images and photographs, visual genograms and timelines, mandalas, doll-making, mask-making and creative journaling. No special art training or skills are necessary!

In the past ten years of training and working with people as an Art Therapist mindfulness and healing through art have become integral aspects of my life. I have found these practices to be most beneficial in staying centered and grounded through life’s challenges and also in increasing joy and creativity in my life. It is my passion to share what I have learned with others and to learn from others who are healing and working through difficulties in their lives. Practicing art by its nature allows us to be in the moment. When painting I am completely focused on the task at hand, enraptured by colour, form and movement. I am lost in the process, not worried about time, my next meeting, my grocery list, the needs of my family, or the cleanliness of my house. All of these things are important, but practicing art allows me to focus on the moment, and be with what is, rather than being lost in my “monkey brain”. Practicing art and mindfulness is something that people can do on their own, outside of the frame of therapy. Here are some ideas to bring art and mindfulness together Meditation: Before sitting down to make art, practice a “breathing into the belly” exercise for 5-15 minutes. Just bring your awareness into your belly and breathe into this area of the body. Let the belly be soft and focus on the rising and falling of the belly as you breathe. If you get distracted do not worry, be gentle with yourself, let go of the thoughts and return your focus to the breath. 1. Pick up a string (about 3 feet long) and dip it in either black india ink or watered-down acrylic black paint. Holding the tip of the string in your hand let the ink-covered end make patterns across a piece of paper by jumping it up and down and pulling it across the page. Next, take a paintbrush and dip it into a watercolor paint palette and start to fill in the shapes that you notice within the black string marks on the page. No special skills are needed and you can create a beautiful abstract image. 2. Try painting to relaxing, meditative music, such as the sound of Tibetan singing bowls (there is a lot of free meditation music on YouTube!). Create images that resonate with the sound of the music. Choose colours that fit with the sounds you are hearing. Just move your hand to the music, and simply paint whatever comes to you. Do not worry about “creating a picture”, just allow the sounds to carry you through the process. 3. Have a stack of magazines beside you and go through them, cutting or ripping out images and words that interest you. Do not get distracted by reading the magazine, just go through the images and words, choosing what you like and putting them aside. When you have chosen your images create a collage on paper, putting them together and gluing them down with a glue stick in a way that you like. You may not use all the images… you can put the others away for another collage. Most of these supplies you can get at a dollar store, drug store, or arts and crafts store. You can use basic, non-expensive art supplies. Remember not to worry about the outcome, be gentle with yourself and try to let go of self-judgment as it comes up. Remember especially to allow yourself to play! Shannon Byrnes, MA, RCC is a Registered Clinical Counsellor and Art Therapist serving children, youth and adults in the Kamloops area. Let’s Take Our Leap Of Faith! Live the life you’ve always imagined…I’ve been saying and promoting these words for several years and only today did I actually realize their meaning. Isn’t it weird how we think we know and believe something but the truth is that we often are a lot of talk and little action? I will admit I’m guilty of this, but not because the intention was wrong. Simply because I thought I got it and I didn’t really get it at all, until now. Like Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, today I took a leap of faith. When I boiled all my feelings of stress and dissatisfaction down I concluded that there are two things I really want in life right now: to feel financially free and to work a job with heartfelt purpose.

I’ve always said that if you follow your heart and are honest to yourself, things will naturally flow and everything will work out. Well today I decided to test what I’ve been saying all these years. I decided to walk the walk and let that match my talk. Today I choose to follow my heart and disregard my yearning for financial freedom and choose to do a job with heartfelt purpose. Today I woke up and quit my day job; the job that sustains me and keeps me financially afloat. I have no plan and I cannot see around the corner. But if the old age saying is true, when one door closes another door opens then everything should work out, right?! Watch out as I prove with blind faith that this is true. Stop making excuses and make a choice that will lead you in the direction of your ultimate life! I encourage you to be your true authentic self. Be true to the person who matters, YOU! Take some risks, make a big move, seal a big deal; it’s exciting and time you made YOUR own leap of faith!

Now, let’s be realistic, we all have to make choices, we can’t always have everything right now. So I did the math and determined that in order to have both dreams come to fruition I would need to work 70+ hours a week between two jobs for the next two years. To me, this grim reality felt like extreme pain. I don’t want to live my life this way and thus I became conscious to the fact that I had to choose a path when faced at a fork in the road. I promote balance through mind, body and spirit wellness. And after this mathematics equation I understood that I’m an offender of what I actually promote.

Shalen Curle (Shay) is an entrepreneur, visionary and writer. She is the owner of Shift Enterprises and the NEW owner of Let's Move Studio. Several years ago Shalen was yearning to discover her life's purpose and put her passion, skills and energy into action. After several months of diligent meditation she awoke from a dream...In this dream she was shown how to achieve her purpose; own a studio which champions mind, body and spirit wellness.

And so I asked myself: do I make the rational financial choice to stay at both jobs or do I throw caution to the wind and take that leap of faith? I had to sincerely ask myself what is “Live the Life I’ve Always Imagined”? For me, I want to do work that is meaningful to myself and others. I want to be healthy in body and mind. I want to nourish my spirit. I want to have fun and feel happiness, peace and joy daily.

It's magic how dreams come true; the future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams... Watch out as her team of inspiring instructors move us towards our ultimate selves! Winter Meditation By Padma

Winter months can be dark, cold, and long, and there are practices that can support us through these months, keeping us in good balance energetically and mentally. When we are in balance we’re happy and we feel contented. Winter’s energy can tend to make us more inward than in the summer. This going-inside season is a quieter time and can be one of the most wonderful and delicious times of the year when we know how to savor the sweet bliss of our inner silence and peace. This quiet time can, however, feel unfamiliar and even unpleasant. In the stillness of winter, old latent agitations can arise from the memory. Year after year these feeling can get associated with wintertime and then winter doesn’t seem like a pleasant, delightful time of stillness and peace, but rather becomes heavy with depression.

ness of winter, we can re-discover the powerful space of inner stillness and train our mind and body to love touching this space every day. Winter then will not be a time of dull depression or anxious business. It will be a sacred time of self-communion and a retreat time, with every meditation session being our own private retreat. This will revitalize and make us healthier than ever. We’ll start to look forward to the long, dark winter months as a time of year when we get to be silent and still every day.

Traditionally, we have celebrations in winter to lighten our spirits and bring light to the dark times. We can get so excited about combating the winter, and celebrating to make ourselves happy, that these celebrations become anxious times. Now we are in a pattern of swinging from depression to anxiety throughout the winter, trying to combat the blues by getting hyped up, then crashing from the hype and falling again into sadness.

It’s possible to get our balance back through the winter by adopting a practice of meditation. Meditation makes the peaceful, quiet space of stillness a familiar and enjoyable feeling. It takes time for an imbalanced nervous system to become accustomed to being in balance, to feeling blissful. If we take a little time each day to simply sit and be at ease in ourselves, this will become more and more a natural feeling. Meditation is a training program to remind our nervous system how to feel balanced and steady, easy yet strong, quiet and yet bright at the same time. Stillness does not mean dullness or lethargy. In the deep ease of stillness we connect with a space of potential and power. We feel the energy of life in our body, and the clear, expanse of awareness of our mind. Back Care in the Winter By Paul Roberts

1. Warm up! You probably think it’s common sense to warm up for sports – however activities like lifting snow (especially first thing in the morning) can be even harder on your body. Start with a stretching regime to warm up your muscles. Do these for both sides and try to hold each stretch for around 15 seconds. It should feel tight but NOT PAINFUL.

2. Lift with the legs If possible, push snow away rather than lifting it. When you have to lift it, bend at the knees. The legs are much better built to deal with lifting than the back alone. When lifting, keep your feet hip width apart and if you need to turn to dump the snow turn your whole body with your legs as well, not just a quick twist from the spine.

3. Stay hydrated

Winter is here, and with it comes a host of potential back problems. From arthritis problems during changes in temperature, to slipping on the ice – we have a few tips here to avoid low back pain and keep you moving throughout this cold season!

Osteoarthritis Some people report an increase in painful arthritic symptoms with changes in the weather. As an osteopathic manual practitioner I believe that these should be treated in the same way as any other time of year! The best was to maintain health in an arthritic joint is to keep it moving around its full range without heavy loading with exercises such as swimming, an elliptical trainer, or movement classes.

Injuries Winter can be a time with many potential hazards for your back. It’s always best to slow down a bit in winter to avoid slips and falls on ice, but often people can fail to realise how physically strenuous activities like shovelling snow can be on the body. Often when people do this they flex forward with their back, load up the shovel then quickly extend and rotate away to throw off the snow. These are some of the worst movements that the discs in between your lower vertebra can have! If you damage your discs it can often come with neurological symptoms such as pain, numbness and even weakness into one or both legs. If you feel symptoms in both legs you should seek immediate medical attention, however even symptoms in one leg can be quite debilitating. These injuries can however be avoided in several ways.

It is easy to remember to drink when its 35 degrees outside, but it’s still important to keep hydrated during winter. This keeps your whole body working better, especially with regards to back pain – where the discs between vertebra are larger and can transfer weight more efficiently when hydrated.

4. Stay active. People will start to wind down in the winter. Cars replace walking short distances, and people stop sports they would have done in summer. This decrease in activity means that muscles will begin to weaken and be less prepared to protect the body. By staying as active as possible you can help prevent injury.

Paul Roberts (M.Ost) trained at the oldest school of osteopathy in Europe, The British School of Osteopathy in London, where he completed his Master of Osteopathy Degree. There in London he also completed Diploma in Sports and Remedial Massage Therapy. Paul often takes a cranio-sacral approach whilst treating his patients. In August he moved to Kamloops, BC, from London, UK to start a new life and begin working within the multidisciplinary clinic, Sabino Medspa.

Horse & Yoga A Practice

By Imogen Whale

“It's about the connection,” Brittanya explains. “You can connect with yourself, the horse, and the nature all around you.” Brittanya Beddington is a practitioner of horse yoga, a practice that encompasses the individual, the animal, the environment, and the physical and meditative aspects of yoga.

Horse Yoga How To For anyone who has access to a safe horse and wants to try horse yoga, here are some helpful hints. 1) Set your intention, check your negativity and nervousness at the gate, and breathe deeply. 2) Have someone hold your haltered horse as you groom. 3) Proceed next to the horse, stand at the horse's shoulder and center yourself. Focus on your breath and feeling the horse's energy beside you. Feel free to put a hand on your horse's side. 4) With one hand on the horse for support, move into a tree pose. Try warrior one and two or a crescent lunge. Make sure that every pose you do on one side you do on the other as well. Keep up your breath, tune yourself into the horse's breath. Notice if he releases and relaxes, he may fall asleep! 5) If you are a confident rider and feel ready, mount your horse and take a moment to reconnect. Place your hands behind you and lay back across your horse's back, hands stretching over your head. Feel the breath beneath you and open your eyes to the sky. Enjoy!

Horse yoga starts with a practitioner meeting an equine partner and establishing a level of comfort and trust while grooming or walking beside them. In a world where many people feel dis-empowered by their circumstances, interactions with a horse can provide an emotional mirror. “It's a great way for people to get a read of themselves,” Brittanya says, explaining that a horse will pick up a person’s emotions. It is best to leave behind any negative energy, breathe deeply and get centered prior to starting a horse yoga session. Setting an intention is equally important as horses are apt interpreters of intention. Once a person is able to interact calmly and confidently around the horse, Brittanya suggests moving on with a ground practice. Yoga poses are practiced standing next to the horse or using it as a balance. A connection of trust is formed as the horse becomes a willing physical support. The horses often enjoy the practice, licking their lips or yawning, an equine sign of relaxation and release. Once a yogi is comfortable practicing beside and connecting with the horse, he or she can choose to further the practice on horseback while the horse stands with someone holding the lead line. “Some people are never going to want to get on the horse,” Brittanya comments, “but doing yoga while touching and breathing in the moment with the horse is a release all by itself.” She emphasizes that there is no pressure. It's not about standing on a horse or doing a downward dog on its haunches. The point is wellness, gratitude and love. In fact, Brittanya doesn't feel that being an experienced yoga practitioner is vital to having a transformative experience. “Even if you can't do poses, or can only do the variations, or are only just starting to intend to do the poses,” she explains, “you're still doing yoga. Yoga isn't a perfected thing, that’s why it's called a practice.” For those passionate about yoga, but with no equine experience, trying horse yoga offers an opportunity to bring their practice to the next level. For those who have horse experience, horse yoga offers a way of intensifying an existing bond. The best reason to try horse yoga? “Bliss,” Brittanya laughs. “It's an amazing experience for anyone who loves nature, yoga, or horses.” Imogen is a freelance writer and horse yoga practitioner based in Revelstoke, BC.
