strategies for helping you turn over a new leaf By Tammie Oram, RTC, MTC, NTP

To ‘Turn over a New Leaf’ means to start over, to act in a different manner or change your attitude about something. This phrase dates way back to the mid-16th century, we’ve been doing this for a while!

First, you’ve got to exercise your brain and practice a little mindfulness by coming up with a plan. Begin by having a very specific goal such as: I am going to increase my daily water intake to a minimum of 6 glasses per day. Or I will make a weekly healthy eating plan and grocery list. I will go to yoga a minimum of 2 times/week. Keep it simple. Over complicating it leads to disappointment, which leads to guilt and shame and then…nothing…let’s not go there. Second, come up with a reward system. (Nothing that will sabotage your results though!…such as an entire bucket of ice cream after eating a healthy diet for a week!) Come up with something simple, something you really enjoy doing such as relaxing with a good novel; a long soak in an aroma-infused bath with pretty candles flickering; or make or buy something you have been putting off. Whichever you choose, have a positive mindset and intention with pre-thought… I will reward myself by________ because I have made a healthy, positive change in which I followed through and accomplished my weekly goal! Yay me!! Third, set out reminders! Can be notes to yourself… I am doing this because… pictures of a holiday destination, set your smartphone with inspirational quotes, set up reminders in your calendar, join a motivational group where there is a leader keeping you going OR start a group for like-minded friends and family. Fourth, avoid situations where you know it’ll lead you astray. Sometimes it is unavoidable so make a plan and stick to the plan. Example: I will be the designated driver this weekend in order to avoid empty calories and I will not sabotage my healthy lifestyle goal. Mind over matter guys…strong determination with the plan will help you out every single time.

FR O M T H E P U B L I SH E R H OW TO AWA K E N TO A BETTER LIFE IN 2018

resolution to revolution

Welcome to the winter edition of Interior Wellness Magazine. The New Year holds the promise of possibility and change: you may find yourself joining a class, eating healthier or exercising more for a while. But how do you live a better life that ‘sticks’? You need more than a resolution, you need... a revolution!

A resolution could be surface level, but a revolution comes from deep within. It rises from a place inside you that is intimately connected to truth and because of that, when change happens, it is complete - and that’s why it sticks. To help you get started in your inner revolution, Here are 3 tools that you can use:

1. Get Curious (and Courageous) The path towards change starts with being willing to look within - and it takes a tremendous amount of courage. You have to be brave to uncover the quiet urgings of your most deeply held secrets; to explore the truth behind your assumptions; and to contemplate even the way you judge others. 2. Ask A Big Question When you are going through something, the best question you can ask isn’t how you can change yourself, instead ask: What qualities do I need to pull out from within myself in order to rise up and get through this? Everything you need is already in you, so the truth is, you don’t need to change - you just need to be open and draw from inside. 3. Stay in the Question Stay open to uncovering even deeper layers through more curiosity and questioning. Thinking that you have the ‘answer’ can make you close off! So keep asking as you begin to take radical responsibility for your life and the choices you’ve made. I hope you’ll use this magazine to support your healthy revolution. Interior Wellness is connection and inspiration: we give you a new issue each season so you can find classes, workshops, practitioners and encouragement for a better life. And we bring you two transformational, annual events: Mountain Spirit Festival at Sun Peaks in June and Interior Wellness Festival in Kamloops in October. I look forward to seeing what this year and your inner revolution brings you! Elizabeth is the founder of Interior Wellness: Promoting connection, inspiration and the best of healthy living in BC Interior. She leads transformational events and conferences to help people come together for renewal, healing and joy. Passionate about wellness and entrepreneurship for over 20 years, Elizabeth shares the gift of creating meaningful marketing and offers wellness business training and mentorship to uplift other spiritual entrepreneurs - so that they can also shine and thrive! elizabeth@interiorwellness.com FB: Elizabeth Beeds Instagram: @elizabethbeeds

Reflexology

BY TRINA GOEBEL

Ssome tarting out the New Year with specialized foot treatments is a step in the right direction.

Reflexology has been around for over 5000 years. There are historical records going back to the 1500s showing its use in China, India, Egypt, Europe and with North American Natives. Throughout the years, this modality of healing has been shared, added to, improved and modernized. We are still learning more about it’s benefits and effects. This unique treatment has helped many people get through different ailments and has brought balance to their lives, providing a healthier existence. Reflexology, also known as zone therapy is the study or treatment of reflexes on the feet or hands. The reflexes are below the skin and by applying slight pressure on these reflexes you are stimulating a neuron. The autonomic nervous system sends an involuntary contraction and relaxation of all parts of the body. So a reflex is an involuntary response to a stimulus. The intention is to break up any blockage or congestion that needs to be eliminated in order to produce a therapeutic benefit to the client. Circulation is improved and elimination improves as tension is reduced and the body renormalizes and rebalances. It is a very detoxifying treatment and it is recommended to drink lots of water, have a bath with Epsom salts and to even go for a walk afterwards. This treatment should never cause pain. There might be some discomfort in congested areas but your practitioner should work it out lightly a bit at a time until the discomfort becomes less and you feel better.

Reflexology works and it allows you to relax!

living

harmoniously during winter

By Jennifer Larsen, R.Ac.

The Nei Ching, an ancient document of Chinese medicine, advises: “[In Winter], people should retire early at night and rise late in the morning, and they should wait for the rising of the sun.”

• Allow more rest. This is nature’s season for rest, repair, and regeneration—a phase important for our next cycle of growth. • Plan more time for your inner life. Use the energy of the season to discover more about yourself through reflection, reading literature that “restores the spirit,” being more aware of your senses, and paying attention to your dreams. The winter season is an especially good time to begin the practice of meditation. • Receive Acupuncture and Moxibustion. Seasonal acupuncture treatments during winter serve to nurture and nourish Kidney Qi (life force/vitality) which will greatly enhance the body's ability to thrive in times of stress, aid in healing, prevent illness and increase vitality. • Choose more “warming” foods. As the weather cools and the body needs to generate more warmth, include more cooked foods and complex carbohydrates in your meals. Try dishes made with whole grains, squashes, beans, peas, and root vegetables such as potatoes, carrots, and garlic. Walnuts and chestnuts have been found to be especially effective for increasing Kidney Qi. • “Gather around the hearth” with people who mean the most to you. Winter evenings are an especially good time to rejuvenate and deepen relationships with those closest to you. Keep gatherings simple and relaxed.

community BY MEGHAN HIEMSTRA

I

have worked for the Kamloops Community YMCA-YWCA for the past 11 years as the General Manager of Health, Fitness and Aquatics. We have a saying at the Y: “We’ve never met a kid whose potential we couldn’t see.” We all have potential, many along the way saw the potential in me, believed in me, nurtured me, and showed me what community is all about. I've dedicated my life in the fitness industry to passing that same guidance down the line. To be a part of a community that has a positive impact on so many lives brings me true joy and happiness. From growing leaders, to helping people achieve their goals, my community helps to create a sense of belonging. My community does this funny little thing; it creates a transformative ripple. It is like laughter, happiness and positive thoughts: the more you do it, the farther it goes. This is exactly what inspires me to do what I do. The more I put into my community, the bigger and better it grows, and helps connect us all. Community means many different things to me. It is where we share a sense of social responsibility and where we experience better health in spirt, mind and body. It shapes leaders for tomorrow, and helps generations of people come together to find support and make lifelong friendships. It is also the difference and impact we make in someone’s life by welcoming, listening, and supporting.

I’d like to express my gratitude to all of you out there who are building and contributing to the greater community. You are doing an amazing job. Changing and saving lives, sharing your gifts and volunteering your time in one form or another, one day and one person at a time - you truly make a difference!

oh my!!

Hot Flashes,

Weight Gain, Menopause

by SHERYL YAREMCO

A dispute has raged on for 50 years as to whether maturing women should replace their hormones at menopause. The cardiovascular protection, quality of life, and preventative health benefits of hormone replacement is no longer in dispute. In 2013, the Yale School of Medicine did a combined analysis of 27 published studies revealing a 28 % reduction in mortality in menopausal women who used hormone replacement. Recently, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists has recommended that all women be offered estrogen and progesterone at menopause for prevention of heart attack and stroke based on the latest research and epidemiology studies. The number one cause of death for females over 60 is cardiovascular disease. Not all women at menopause have symptoms from their declining hormone levels to the point where it is affecting their quality of life with sleep disruption, hot flashes, anxiety, urinary incontinence, mood swings, brain fog and memory loss. But for those ladies with debilitating or just annoying symptoms, Bio Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT) is recognized as valid and safe. The proper use of the term BHRT includes any hormone that is prescribed which has an identical molecular structure to the hormones the body produces. This may include insulin and thyroid, but estradiol, progesterone and testosterone are the hormones most widely used for symptom relief and healthy vibrant aging. Bio Identical Progesterone is very different from these synthetic chemicals and very safe and beneficial. Age is inevitable, but you can age with health and vigour, and you can be pain-free while enjoying a full, vibrant life. We all have the power to manage the aging process. Opting for healthier life choices, restoring hormone balance, optimizing nutrition and changing poor diet habits will help. It is important to add quality multivitamins, minerals, omega 3 fatty acids and vitamin D to your daily routine to help correct nutrient deficiencies commonly caused by today’s environments and poor diets. Aiming for Optimal not just Normal will result in a higher quality of life and longer life span! AN INTRODUCTION TO

by Maggy Davidson

Astrology, numerology, palmistry, and tarot are all forms of divination (the practice of seeking knowledge of the future or of the unknown) that are integrated with each other. The detailed study of one will show the way to another. These forms have been practiced since ancient times in Babylon, Sumer, India, China, and Tibet. Palmistry is the examination of the lines and shape of the hand and how various parts of the hand relate to specific planets (as seen in astrology). By examining the palm, one can predict the potential of and see the actualization of an individual’s life path. In astrology, we refer to an individual’s natal chart as a “snapshot in time,” which also provides insight into their potential, past lives, and major life events. Astrology is the examination of the movement and positioning of various celestial bodies, and their influences on both a personal and collective level. There are 12 astrological signs: three earth, three water, three fire, and three air. Numerals and degrees are essential components of astrology. Precision is key! This leads us to numerology. Like everything, numbers have a vibration, and that vibration provides insight into our abilities, purpose, and soul destiny. Numbers relate to the gifts and lessons of everyday life, and can shed light on personality and character. Unlike the previously discussed divination forms, tarot is a relatively recent practice. The first tarot deck was hand-painted and given as a wedding gift in the 1400’s. Tarot is a 78-card deck, consisting of four suits of 14 cards each (pentacles, swords, cups, and wands), and 22 major arcana cards (for example, The Tower or The Magician). The querent shuffles the cards with a question in mind, then lays the cards out in a spread (of which there are infinite choices) to be interpreted. Clear questions get clear answers! It is from the tarot that our modern-day playing cards evolved. A reading done with any of these forms can identify your potential and, furthermore, assist in identifying core issues, diminishing or expanding on potential successes or challenges in your life. Tips To Energetically Cleanse And Clear Your Home BY KRISTY JANOTA

Our homes are often well lived-in, everyday! Just like we need a check-up, tune-up or spa-visit, our homes need a refresh too. And just like we need to calm our minds and let go of toxins and mental clutter, our homes need to be energetically cleansed and balanced.

By V i v i a n Eva n s

CONNECTING WITH YOUR HORSE THROUGH YOGA

Here are 10 ideas to have an energetically healthier home: 1. Balance the nature elements in your home to cleanse, clear and enhance the energy. Add water features, crystals, salts, or natural rock, add candles or a fireplace, or wooden furniture or accents. 2. Add salt lamps to have a calming effect and neutralize an over-charged environment. 3. Have live plants around your home to help absorb toxins and boost oxygen. 4. Open the windows to clear stagnant air and toxins and add a fresh dose of oxygen. 5. Incorporate diffusers to add moisture to the air and the healing, freshening benefits of essential oils. 6. Visualize clearing your home of negativity and adding positive energy. Be creative! Imagine going room to room and filling it with light or imagine ancient cleansing rituals like smudging or perhaps even magic! 7. Display positive words around your home to support your intention for a positive environment. 8. Ask the Universe for cleansing energy - whatever your beliefs, ask or pray for your home to be cleared of negativity, filled with positive and surrounded in a blanket of protection and light. 9. Declutter! Clearing your space enables you to feel calm and centred. Start with one small space and branch out from there. Pick a space you will notice every day! 10. Fill your home with meaning and love - friends, family, laughter! Happy, loving energy will always help transform your environment. Spending any time with horses, you instantly become present. Without even sitting on the horse, they carry you into a state of meditation. Shifting your awareness effortlessly, your horse helps you forget everything that may have been weighing you down before arriving right here. Maybe first noticing the size, colour, the texture of their coat, the velvet on their nose, the delicateness of their eye. You notice the earth that your feet stand on, you notice the horses-hooves that connect them to the earth. Then the soft, sweet breath as they greet and examine you - maybe even making you smile as they tickle the back of your neck. Drifting away you seamlessly discover that you are in a complete state of union, yoga. Practicing yoga with horses asks you to be present and shows you the way of connecting with your true self. To them we are transparent there are no secrets or desires we can hide, a horse will reveal this to you and can be the ultimate mirror, mysterious and enchanting. Asana’s are now expressed in a different form, a place of intuition an expression from soul to soul. This is not a posture we were told to do however a posture we have been guided to. What is your true expression?

HeartMath

HeartMath (Science of

ÂŽ the Heart, 2015), research

shows emotional stress affects our hormonal BY KENT WATSON systems in detrimental ways. Emotions drive 90% of our physiology. Depleting (negative) emotions produce 1400 biochemical and hormonal changes that impact the stress hormone Cortisol. Cortisol can circulate through the body for twelve hours after a stress event. Renewing (positive) emotions release 1400 biochemical and hormonal changes that impact DHEA, the hormone that improves immunity, health and vitality. Stress and Hormones

The master hormone Pregnenolone produces Cortisol, and DHEA in the adrenal gland. A normal Cortisol graph shows high levels in the morning. It decreases by noon, tapers by evening, and falls to its lowest levels at night. The latter allows you to sleep. This occurs when our emotional, mental, physical, and spiritual domains are in balance. What happens under chronic stress? In stage 1, Pregnenolone produces Cortisol and levels increase. As stress continues cortisol production continues by diverting Pregnenolone into its creation and away from DHEA manufacture. DHEA levels drop. By Stage 2 Pregnenolone levels start to decline and Cortisol production decreases and DHEA levels drop further. In Stage 3, Pregnenolone production is depleted to where it can no longer produce adequate levels of Cortisol or DHEA. All three reach low levels. Thus, depression sets in and adrenal fatigue is the order of the day. Chronic stress leads to burnout, illness and disease. What can be done to shift this energy depletion process? Become aware of your constantly daily changing emotional states by recognizing stressful moments. Second, apply the Heart-Focused BreathingTM (HFB) technique before a stress event or the moment one happens. Be aware that most stress occurs under the radar so, apply HFB throughout the day. In doing so, you shift from depleting emotional states and cortisol creation to renewing conditions and increased DHEA production. HeartMath tools provide stress management on the fly. from

heaven By Michelle Morrison

I connect to deceased loved ones on the other side who are now a part of that great non-physical, loving, heavenly energy. There is so much that we can learn from our loved ones since they have lived life with us, they know us, plus they know what it is like to be in human-form and all of experiences that come with that! And now, as your loved ones are in the place with source-energy (a place of unconditional light and love), they have beautiful things to say about life. They know ways to support you as they know what you are going through and what you are experiencing. The invitation from your loved ones is to spend your time focusing on what brings you joy, rather than anything that takes away from your joy. It can be challenging to remove yourself from the bad news stories that are currently circulating. It is almost an addiction to find out what the bad news of the day is! We tend to focus on pain before we focus on joy, and whatever it is that we focus on becomes more familiar. So, I often hear how important it is to focus on what makes you happy. When we focus on what makes us smile and laugh, what opens our hearts and brings out our compassion, kindness, generosity and empathy, it brings more meaning and more joy into our lives. Your sensitivity, happiness, kindness and generosity are such gifts. When you look for it, you see more and more of it and you contribute more and more of it to the world around you. For 2018, make an intention to look for the good. Keep looking for whatever makes you smile, stories that melt your heart, actions of kindness and caring. Be this as much as you can. As you do this, you will feel the change within and you will be making a much larger impact than you can ever imagine. what does it mean to be

spritual?

BY STEPHANIE BANKS

What does it mean to be spiritual? First of all, its important to note that spirituality is not something to strive for: it is who we are. We are divine beings connected to a unifying source who’s capacities and capabilities are endless. We are pure potential living a human experience where limitations and biases come into play, which then lead to questions about our spirituality. We are part of something so grand that we have trouble defining it. So much so that wars and atrocities result from our inability to understand and express this intelligent force of which we are all a part of! So the question is how do we express our knowing and understanding of this? The answer lies in what I call practicing the spiritual arts. This simply means practicing anything good, loving and compassionate since spirituality is a word that represents these ideas. By practicing patience, kindness, sincerity, integrity, non-judgment, acceptance, equality, tolerance, honesty, gentleness, grace, trust and most importantly authenticity you will find yourself more in tune with your spirituality. You will discover aspects about yourself that you didn’t know existed because your vision was clouded by more human ideas of acquisition, artificial advancement and self-motivated aspirations. I suggest that we create spirit-driven lifestyles by practicing the art of being a decent human being in every moment, to the best of our abilities. Let’s create space for goodness to enter our hearts, for love to pour through our veins and energetic fields. Then love will flow to our external world elevating not only our own vibration but also the vibration of all beings everywhere. The choice is yours and always will be. How do you choose to express your Spirituality? Stephanie Banks is an award winning author, inspirational speaker, medium and Reiki practitioner. Since her NDE in 2012 Stephanie channels a collective consciousness that delivers profound messages to individuals and groups. www.stephanie-banks.com

feminine gifts of the divine

BY MARILYN PUFF

It's exciting to know that every being and body is a Divine creation of balance, of yin and yang and of masculine and feminine characteristics. Every atom, organ or chakra has positive and/or negative polarities. Our choice to integrate the feminine is crucial in this world of a mass consciousness that is out of balance in so many ways. The often singularly valued masculine traits, of production, competition and logical thinking, must be in harmony with the flexible, cooperative and intuitive gifts of our Divine Feminine. This is one of the keys for creating a healthy body and a healthy planet. MASCULINE / YANG Inhalation / Expansion Takes Effort / Pursue

FEMININE / YIN Exhalation / Contraction Surrender / Release

Direct / Straight Line /Arrow Round about / Circle / Embracing Soft and curvy Hard and Angular Right Brain / Indirect / Left Brain / Linear / Inner World Outer World Sensitive / Emotional / Intuitive Logical / Mental / Rational Spontaneous / Flexible / Structure / Production / Esthetic Practical Striving / Activity / Directing Yeilding / Reflecting / Inviting Aggressive / Competitive Fire / Sun / Hot Light / Fast

Passive / Cooperative Water / Moon / Cold Dark of Night / Relaxed

With these traits in mind, think and feel into how you can have more acceptance and experience of your Feminine aspects. • Play in nature, gaze at the moon or a fire, relax and reflect • Create sacred space and focus on connecting with your inner world of imagination and revelation • Be in community or in circles with your gender or people who are creative, supportive and cooperative • Be committed to expressing your emotions and healing your emotional wounds • Try something new, be spontaneous • Learn more about the power and beauty of our Sacred Sexual nature • Slow down and listen to your body • Work and communicate with more kindness and gentleness Thank you for being part of the Divine Feminine rising .… Marilyn Puff lives in Kamloops and is founder of the first annual Sacred Moon Emergence Retreat for Women. Marilyn has been in the field of creative inner transformation and ceremony for over 30 years. 250-320-1993 www.SacredMoonEmergence.ca FB @sacredmoonemergence

BY MEGHAN HIEMSTRA

Reflecting on my life in the Health and Wellness industry, it is difficult to believe that I was once a shy, introverted 17-year old. My mother forced me to sign up for the YMCA Fitness Leadership program in 1984. I went kicking and screaming, maybe even slamming a door or two. There was no way I was going to become an aerobics instructor, let alone stand up and teach in front of a room of people that were expecting direction from me. However, I can fondly say after a lifetime of teaching, mothers do know best! In my 33 years of teaching and now that I’m a parent, I’ve seen it all and I’ve taught it all. Some of my teaching favourites were Hi/Lo, Step, and the Slide. My class music was played on a record player, and my favorite memory experience of all time, was trying to teach a class while not tripping over the cord of my hand-held microphone. Are you following along? Doing the math? I still love to teach and train; although, at 51, my passion and body has shifted to barre, yoga, and myo-facial release classes. I have worked for the Kamloops Community YMCA-YWCA for the past 11 years as the General Manager of Health Fitness and Aquatics. I love my job. We have a saying at the Y: “We’ve never met a kid whose potential we couldn’t see.” We all have potential; some of us just need a bit of nurturing and guidance along the way. Many along the way saw the potential in me, believed in me, nurtured me, coached me, and showed me what community is all about. I've dedicated my life in the fitness industry to passing that same guidance down the line. I have never looked back; my exponential growth as a leader and community builder was born in those early teaching moments. I have

been very fortunate to have the mentors that have graced my life and encouraged me throughout my career. My mentors have helped me get where I am today, and instilled a passion for teaching, coaching and helping to empower others. To be a part of a community that has a positive impact on so many lives brings me true joy and happiness. From growing leaders to helping people achieve their goals, my community helps to create a sense of belonging. My community does this funny little thing; it creates a transformative ripple. It is like laughter, happiness and positive thoughts; the more you do it, the farther it goes. This is exactly what inspires me to do what I do. The more I put into my community, the bigger and better it grows, and helps connect us all. Community means many different things to me. It is where we share a sense of social responsibility; experience better health in spirt, mind and body. It shapes leaders for tomorrow, and helps generations of people come together to find support and make lifelong friendships. It is also the difference and impact we make in someone’s life by welcoming, listening, and supporting. The community of Health and Wellness helped raise me, and in turn the same community helped me raise my children. I’d like to express my gratitude to all of you out there who are building and contributing to the greater community. You are doing an amazing job. Changing and saving lives, sharing your gifts and volunteering your time in one form or another, one day and one person at a time - you truly make a difference! Namaste

volunteer

throughout the year by Janice Otremba

Volunteering provides a sense of community and connection and is important at a fundamental level of a community’s health and success.

isn’t always the best. But if you don’t volunteer, I invite you to get curious about why not. Our community needs you.

Without food banks, mission kitchens, shelters, fundraisers, board and committee members, mentors, coaches, etc., the dynamic of our community would shift immensely. If all the volunteers disappeared, the community would notice a significant negative impact right away.

There’s nothing wrong with volunteering and community engagement being a reciprocal experience. When you’re just volunteering to give, there’s a higher chance of burning out and you may eventually feel like you’re not getting anything back.

Volunteerism creates a better community and better citizens. There are a myriad of ways to be involved, including contributions of money, time and even resources. As a business you can give back with your time and your company, using the opportunity for team engagement activities.

So ask yourself: what’s in it for me? A feel good experience? Supporting those or a cause that’s supported you? etc.

I encourage you to look at how you’re already giving back every day. Do you have the neighbourhood kids over all the time? Do you spend time mentoring someone? Where do you practice acts of kindness or service? You might already be giving back without realizing it. Volunteering isn’t for everyone, and that’s totally fine. There are times when it’s a good choice not to, the timing

Ayurveda, Winter and a Healthy Immune System By Tanya Thompson

The approach of winter can mean that it’s time to foster a healthy immune system. It also means slowing down after a busy summer and fall. The doshas that are predominately affected in the winter are kapha and vata (depending on your constitution, lifestyle and diet). By balancing the qualities of these doshas, we can keep immunity high and the body in a state of health. Ayurveda's age-old wisdom offers preventative measures regarding diet, lifestyle practices and herbs to help keep healthy throughout the winter. Here are a few Ayurvedic tips for a healthy winter: The digestive fire tends to be weak in the winter and so it’s important to eat warm foods that include fresh fruit and vegetables which provide nutrients, fibre and antioxidants to support immune function. Include spices like pepper, ginger, cinnamon, cayenne and turmeric that increase digestive fire. To maintain a sharp and bright digestive fire eat only when you’re hungry and refrain from cold and heavy foods. Lifestyle practices like yoga, meditation, pranayama, tai-chi and qigong nurture the essences of our body and support a calm mind that helps to respond to stress more effectively. Daily self massage (abhyanga) is an immediate way to restore calm and balance. It eases nervous tension and stimulates the I-feel-great hormone, oxytocin. Abhyanga helps to move the lymph, stimulate digestion and enliven the muscles and joints. It creates a surge of positive energy and self love that carries you through the day. Winter sports and exercise coupled with sunshine strengthen your body and mind. Tanya Thompson has been a student of Vedic Traditions since 1990. Take baths using Epsom salts and the essential oil “Thieves” which is specific for the immune system. Saunas are beneficial to get heat deep into our tissues and balance accumulation of toxins in our body. Most important; share time with people you love, smile and be grateful. MAYBe THE WINTER BLAHS ARE NOT SO BAD?

By Christine Patton We all know that, by the time January hits, we are generally burned out and ready to relax. The hype of the holiday season is over, the weather is usually cold and dreary, and we have approximately five months to wait - for solid, warm weather. Perhaps the signal is to retreat into the gathering silence of the winter months? Here are three science-backed reasons why:

1. Silence relieves stress and tension. Noise pollution has been found to lead to high blood pressure and heart attacks, impaired hearing and overall poor health. Loud noises raise stress-levels by activating the brain’s amygdala, causing the release of the stress hormone cortisol. A 2006 study published in the journal Heart, found two minutes of silence to be more relaxing than listening to “relaxing” music, based on changes in blood pressure and blood circulation in the brain. 2. Silence replenishes our mental resources. The ceaseless attentional demands of modern life put a significant burden on the prefrontal cortex of the brain, which is involved in high-order thinking, decision-making and problem-solving. When our attention resources are depleted, we become distracted and mentally fatigued, we struggle to focus, solve problems and come up with new ideas. The quiet stillness you find when walking alone in nature allows the brain to relax.

Christine Patton can be found napping and generally eschewing loud friends, come January. However, you can still contact her at chris@powerwithin.ca or 250-864-7299. Sshh!

3. Getting quiet regenerates brain cells. A 2013 study on mice, published in the journal Brain, Structure, and Function, involved comparing the effects of ambient noise, white noise, and silence on the rodents’ brains. They found that two hours of silence daily led to the development of new cells in the hippocampus, a key brain region associated with learning, memory and emotion. So, cuddle up with your loved one and doze away. Your brain will thank you!

not yet determined —

Question Or Statement? By Debbie Anderson It’s funny, but whenever I see the words “Not Yet Determined” I wonder if people perceive them as a question or statement? The word “determined” in essence, is of unwavering mind or resolute. You know what I mean... I CAN do this. Whereas “not yet” can be defined as either an expectation for something to happen that hasn’t yet, or I am not ready.

Your purpose in life is the key within that you can unlock and change everything because you are the vibrational interpreter of your reality. Move forward, not backward, in the moment, in the NOW vibration, conscious of what and why things are happening to you. Change and adapt your perception based on your intention and seeing what is ahead of you, around you and within you.

This is YOUR life, so are you ready? Have you determined your truth of where you want to be, or are you not yet willing or prepared? Too scared to move forward, held back in fear.... saying “I can’t because......”

I remind people you are ALWAYS in the right place at the right time, it is whether your heart is open to see, feel and BE. That is all that matters.

Whatever your belief system, and there are many to choose from, the bottom line is we are the conscious creator of our own life. Yes, this is down to you, because of you... no exceptions, no cop outs. EVERYTHING starts and ends with YOU! Your thoughts, your views-the good, the bad and the other stuff all create that vibrational frequency that makes or prevents you from doing and being. Sometimes it is hard to step out of our comfort zone, away from our circle of friends or family who may be the controllers and influencers in our life. But, it is your divine right to lead YOUR life the way you were supposed to, the way your creator within you wanted you to live.

Yes, life throws a few curve balls, but as a wise person told me many moons ago... what doesn’t break us makes us stronger. If anything we learn what not to do again. And in honesty maybe that is something we had to see or have happen to us for us to step into our own awareness and determine what legacy we leave behind. If you are “not yet determined” to have the life you want, that is your decision. Maybe things will change tomorrow, or the next day. For now live your life in the moment, to the fullest, every vibrational breath of it. Vibrational Blessings ~ Debbie A. Anderson
