About Yoga Yoga Preparing for Class “Yoga is the Journey, Practice is the Path.” Enjoy the journey; start with a sense of curiosity and adventure. Explore several classes, styles and teachers. If you aren’t finding what you need, ask us! That’s what we’re here for—you and your practice.

There is a perfect yoga for everybody and every body. • Bring your own yoga mat to class. Rental mats are free on your first visit; after that, you may rent a mat for a fee ($1 per use). If you perspire during class, please bring or rent a towel. • Please keep conversations low when you arrive and leave as other students may be relaxing or meditating. • Come with an empty stomach. Yoga is best practiced three hours after a meal. If you have to eat, choose a light, easily digestible snack. • Tell your teacher about any injuries or special health conditions before class to ensure you have a safe and enjoyable time.

Hatha Yoga: What to Expect

Hatha classes are rejuvenating and relaxing. Starting with a centering practice, class then moves through a series of poses (asanas) and breath work (pranayama) guided by the instructor. The asana practice is designed to move the body in many different directions, encouraging strength, flexibility and balance; pranayama calms the mind, encouraging focus and health. Many Hatha Yoga classes use the word “Namaste” at the beginning or end of class, which means “I bow to the Divine in you”. Another common practice is to chant Om, which means “the Divine which manifests all that is”.

Kundalini Yoga: What to Expect

Classes begin with a time for centering. The teacher leads the class in the mantra “Ong Namo, Guru Dev Namo”, which means “I call upon my own inner guidance, the teacher within me”. Students may follow along or listen, as they like. The class is then lead in 10-20 minutes of warm-up exercises, which prepare the body for the yoga sets (kriyas) that follow. Each yoga set involves physical postures (asana), breath work (pranayama) and meditative focus. Yoga is followed by a short meditation and a long, deep relaxation that allows time for regeneration and stress release.

Flow-Based Hatha Yoga (Hatha Flow, Vinyasa and Ashtanga): What to Expect

Hatha Flow-Based classes are a more vigorous type of yoga, usually practiced in a warm room, (a minimum 74 degrees/maximum 84 degrees, depending on the style). Classes include multiple Surya Namaskar (Sun Salutations), paying special attention to the foundations of vinyasa movement (the intelligent sequencing and flow of postures). Instruction covers postures (Asana) and their function, correct breathing and control of breath (Pranayama), engaging the energetic locks (Bandhas) and focus points (Drishthi).

Classes Yoga Yoga has a class for everybody and every body! See our full schedule or look online at www.yogayoga.com to find a yoga schedule that works for you!

Represents beginner-friendly classes.

Hatha Yoga Reduce Stress Flexibility Body Awareness Injury Prevention

Kundalini Yoga Awareness Transition &

Transformation

Mental Clarity

Hatha Yoga combines postures (asanas) with conscious breathing (pranayama) and focus to develop strength, flexibility and mental clarity. Expect to develop body awareness and explore varied postures in a mixed-level environment. Hatha Star focuses on the foundations of the practice and the mechanics of the postures in classes that are appropriate and welcoming to beginners, but can also be helpful to experienced yogis seeking attention to detail in practice. Hatha Intermediate takes the basics of Hatha and adds a playful element. This class is for those who want to explore more complex poses- such as inversions and balances—in a learning environment. Gentle Yoga is a great place for those who want to take it slower. Classes focus on releasing tension, connecting with the breath and working with the joints. Gentle yoga helps balance a hectic lifestyle and is also appropriate for students with limitations.

Kundalini Yoga uses breath, movement and focus to energize the body while supporting strength and balance of the immune and glandular systems. Dynamic classes promote emotional wellbeing, mental clarity and stress relief. Appropriate for all abilities. Kundalini Star classes focus on helping new students understand the intentions and benefits of Kundalini yoga, while enjoying a class that is welcoming to beginners and helpful for experienced yogis to focus on the foundations. Appropriate for all abilities. Kundalini of Sound uses mantra, movement, meditation, music and the sound of the gong to promote transformation and relaxation. Basic familiarity with Kundalini yoga is helpful, but this class is appropriate for all abilities. Kundalini and Meditation will use the foundations of Kundalini yoga to create a centered and calmed mind in order to support longer, more focused meditations. Again, basic familiarity with Kundalini yoga is helpful.

Classes Flow-Based Hatha Yoga

Fitness & Strength

Weight Loss

Cardio

Endurance

Discipline

Hatha Flow synchronizes movement and breath to produce a flow of postures that lead naturally from one to the next. Expect to move continuously through about a third of the class. Students should understand that the classroom is not cooled (73-78 degrees) and that the physical practice can naturally build heat in the body. Familiarity with the basics of Hatha yoga is required. Vinyasa uses vigorous flows of postures to warm the body, focus the mind, increase flexibility and build strength and stamina. Classes are taught in a warm room (78-84 degrees), and students should expect to move continuously throughout the majority of the class. Familiarity with Hatha and the basics of Hatha Flow is required. Candlelight Flow is a sweet practice, using flowing asanas in a candlelit room. Emphasis is placed on internalizing the practice – students should have the foundation of flow-based yoga to fully enjoy this meditative flow practice. Ashtanga is a challenging lineage of Hatha Yoga focused on building strength and endurance leading to a naturally relaxed mental state. In a warm room (78-84 degrees), a dynamic sequence of postures–the Primary Series–combines focus with continuous movement. Familiarity with Hatha and the basics of Hatha Flow is suggested. Fundamentals of Ashtanga incorporate about half of the Primary Series postures, allowing for a comfortable introduction to Ashtanga or an opportunity for regular Ashtanga students to focus on details. Familiarity with basic yoga postures highly suggested. Ashtanga Mysore is an individually paced class taught in a group setting where students can receive one-on-one assistance from the teacher. This is Ashtanga as it is classically taught, allowing students to advance at their own pace and with guidance. Basic familiarity with the Primary Series is suggested.

Relaxation Yoga Rejuvenation Recovery

Restorative Yoga offers postures held for extended periods of time in a supported fashion. Alternately stimulating and relaxing the body encourages balance, deep relaxation and rejuvenation. Appropriate for all abilities. Deep Relaxation, sometimes referred to as Yoga Nidra, is a guided meditation class done primarily while resting on the back to clear the mind and create a relaxed yet energized feeling in the body. Appropriate for all abilities.

Research

Our current research project is called ‘The Yoga Genome’. It’s an innovative approach to yoga research, intended to provide other researchers, medical doctors and psychotherapists a nuanced appreciation of what we all do in yoga class, without reducing the practice of yoga in too simplistic a manner. The project is enlisting yoga practitioners around the country to help map the broad range of lineages of yoga.

Service

Through a grant program, we fund individual yoga teachers to provide classes to individuals who would not ordinarily be able to learn to practice yoga. We also offer Teacher Training Intern donation classes at Yoga Yoga South.

Education

The Foundation hosts educational events periodically about yoga and health, in a range of communities. Please check our website to learn more about our events, our partners and our outreach opportunities. To find out more information, apply for a teaching grant, get involved or to make a donation to support our work, please call (512)381-6480 or visit www.yogacarefoundation.org
