Plant Factory A field is not a farm
It is unreasonable to feed a growing population with limited soil in the world. Thus a soilless plant factory is proposed. Instead of directly applying the hydroponic, my concept would be a closed system where plant, fish, mushroom and other the recycling component were tied by a piping system. The same mechanism compares to core tube in the skyscraper. The recycling component is underground, the fish tank is on the ground with a public access as landscape, and the plants is ironical, in the sky. The soilless plant factory is also architecture without context, which means with the constant supply of water, seed, and relatively less electricity, the system could provide food in most urban habitat on earth.

We are standing in a threshold, where we can forsee a revolutionary level of automation in factory, It is called Industry 4.0. Allowed by the application of open source, the development of artiďŹ cial intelligence, and the growing capabilities of production tools like robotic arm and 3D printer, the assembly line will possess the ability for a complete automatic production. More suprisingly, a self-aptimization process based on algorism. Thus it is redeďŹ ning the relationship between people and machine. They are upgrade from using the machine as a tool, as they did in the period of indusrial 1 and 2, cooperating with the machine as a production unit, as they did in the period of industrial 3, to being a coordinator of the machine system. In that regard, a factory equipped with the technology could be an eďŹƒcient producer, but not a responsible job creator. To be responsive to the context of job market, for producing food, we introduce catering industry. The technology evolvement for machine, take computer for an example, is the tendency to get smaller dimension and better performance. Such revolutionary paradigm-shift also overlay a technological layer to the long standing management layer of the factory, thus eliminating the required number of labor in the factory, but ensuring a higher production rate.

Bussiness Opportunity for Food Production
A phone is not a plant. Smaller, quicker, it might work for the improvement of electronics, but it certainly does not work for a plant. For agriculture, there would be two ways to increase the production level besides genetic operation, to stack them and making the farm vertical, and to accelerate the material exchange rate, which lead us to hydroponic plantation, more precisely for this scenario, a plant factory in a closed environment. Plant factory is an ambivalent concept. It is a combination of uncontrolled nature, and stable production. To do that, the lighting, temperature, air speed, material intake, all of them must be controlled. By eliminating random factor, the quality of the plant production is tremendously improved, and of course highly controlled, not to mentioned the unbelievable production rate.

In the spirit of a traditional farm eco- system, with plant as producer, ďŹ sh as predator and mushroom as decomposer. The beauty of nature eco-system is that, no matter how chaotic it might look like, it could always achieve balance, like the drawing above. But for a farm system, everything has to be precise, like the drawing below. But that is not enough for factory. For factory eco system however, everything, even the by-product, has to be displayed.

One thing to discover in those processes is that if you add grinders to the certain point in the factory system, everything could be connected by actual tubes. In that regard, the by-product, as a connection between each component plays the major role in this system instead of plant, fish, and mushroom. So the concept would be a closed system where plant, fish, mushroom and other the recycling component were tied by a piping system. The same mechanism compares to core tube in the skyscraper. The recycling component is underground, the fish tank is on the ground with a public access, and the plants is in the sky. This is a concept model of a single production unit. The hydroponic net in the sky is connected to the tube by a processing room for necessary adjustment operation.

What s the hydroponic unit in this system like? I imagine it is locked in glass unit connected by tube for both nutrition and ventilation and robotic track transporting the plant for further operation. The cube itself contains three different kinds of the module as below, according to the dimension of different plants. For the setting of the robot track, I aggregate them into a 5x5x4meter cube which is interconnected from every plant unit to the processing room. Thus it gave us the possibility to transform the module from a plant level to an architectural level.

A ďŹ eld is not a farm. Because a ďŹ eld means arable land, and farm refers to factory. If we want to ask more from same amount of soil, hydroponic without traditional soil is one healthy way to go. Given that the production unit I propose is applying the same scheme of the core tube in skyscraper, we could simply overlay a self-sustain plant factory to any skyscraper who is maintained by core tube. Just turning certain room in side of the skyscraper into recycling component.

Origin After the year of 1978, China officially step into its phase of material development, as economy growth became priority. Such development is in an amazing speed, compared to many developed country. But it also left many serious issue. To achieve the goal of co-prosperity eventually, the government decided to address their investment on some major city, hoping the prosperity of the major city would finally influence the adjacent area. The concentration of investment facilitated the flourishing of certain major city, and now, it formed five mega city series which facilitate the economic growth of the country as well as over ten small city series in the adjacent area. The overdevelopment of the major city was an obvious one. Behind the marvelous prosperity, there lies the massive labor force and intensive investments, which means limited resources for overwhelming population. The consequence of such high level of concentrations was devastating, as it led to several unsustainable situation in those major city. Most famous case is the air pollution of fog and haze in Beijing. But the more substantiated one was the high housing price, as it may take over 100 years for an average salary earner to afford an apartment in many of the major city.

Five Major City Series
Unsustainable Situation from City Expansion
Map of Migration in China, 2014
Migration The investments created enormous vacant jobs and promising opportunities yet attracted people in the rural area migrate to the city in order to make a better living. Such tremendous concentration of resources prominently made a big difference while altogether led to the economic miracle from 1978 till now. But it as well create many problems nation-wide. The most dramatic one is the subsequent unsustainable housing price. Driven by increasing numbers of migrate workers, the population density in the major city became enormous. What is more, in some city, the migrate workers even made up nearly half of the total population.
Infrastructure Developed in the Mega City Series
Housing and Average Income in the Mega City Series
Previous Strategies In order to ensure that every citizen have a nice living place, especially for low-and-medium wage earners, Chinese Government starts series of project mostly focus on two perspectives: Creating Cheap Apartment, and Expanding The Scale of the city.
Expanding The Scale of the city In order to reach the respective population capacity for a standard living of all its citizens, the city began to expand, yet creating an unhealthy structure of the city. The major city plays a dominant role, as the adjacent city is lacking its economic independence. The transitory areas were potential land for expansion. Consequently, the transitory area and the adjacent city became hotels for major city workers, yet it increased the pressure in the major city center, which in turn raise the housing price. In the proposed structure of major city expansion, the dominance of major city is relatively lessen, as economy center had been formed in the transitory area. These centers provide both jobs and apartment, as well as entertainment facilities for citizens. The economy center could facilitate both major city and adjacent city. Consequently, the pressure in the center of major city was lessen, the population is evenly distributed, and the adjacent city is not suppressed by major city because of the economic support from economic center.
Creating Cheap Apartment
City Expansion Paradigm, Ideal and Current
They are mainly two kinds of low-priced apartment for low and medium wage earners. One is called the affordable housing , as the government appointed certain blocks in the city, hired contractors to build it, and sell the house to the low-and-medium wage earners as a social welfare. The affordable housing worked, but it s effect is weakened by their limited number and greed citizens who pretend to be low-and-medium wage earners but in fact possess their own apartment. The other is called the low-rent house , as the government appointed series of residence, renting them to the low and medium wage earners in a reasonable price. As a substitution of the affordable housing , low-rent house prevent greedy house owners took over the welfare which belong to the poor. But in some places, rent is still very high because of the location of those apartments. Therefore it was as well, not solving the problem.
Past Housing Policy After the year of 1978, housing gradually transformed from public properties distributed to employees by their company as a perquisite, to commodity which could be purchased by individuals. As shown in the chart, compared with the commercial house, the price of affordable house and low rent house were still controlled by the residence location. In that case, as land in China is a national properties, maybe a new way is to let the residence location be a welfare of occupation, distributed by the nation, yet control the housing price in the most essential way.
Combining The Solution To combine the two solution, we came out the idea of the system of the portable house. The house itself is transferable, as it is a properties belongs to the individual. But the location where the house is docked was decided by the government, or more speciďŹ cally, the company which the individual worked for. The system of Portable House is an ancillary system to the real estate market. It provide the low and medium wage earners house with an aordable price, less pressure in the real-estate market, and possibly encourage homeless people get a job, as the portable house is a privilege for workers. Meanwhile, as the distribution of population is arranged in the form of the location of the company, the government could easily establish economic center in a distant location with the portable populations as the labor force. In that case, the structure of the city would be rearranged as intended.
Portable Housing
City Evacuation Paradigm As mentioned, the vital element in the project of portable house is the controlled price. It is natural to think how to cut down the construction cost. And remodeling a container as a portable house provide a marvelous answer. Firstly, container perfectly solve the problem of transportation. As container itself was a part of the logistic net, transferring it would not be a big problem. Secondly, container provide better structural strength and cheaper constructional cost than most of the current architectural structure.

Research: Old District In Wuhan
This part of the portfolio provide thorough research and analysis for the latter design work, most focus on the old district in the city of Wuhan.

With the failure of the second opium war in 1856, Chinese emperor were forced to permit the establishment of foreign settlements where series of trade port were opened. The establishment were all well-located for transport convenience and thus led the local rich desperately seeking for cooperation with foreigners. Luxurious business district were formed and massive constructions were taken place. As time goes by, the rich starts to live in those business district. That is the origin of the site, a wealthy district where rich family live in one house. Those houses, without doubt, were taking advantage of both advanced construction technology as well as the feature of traditional Chinese housing. Then came the year of 1949, the Communist kicked out the former ruler as well the foreigners in their settlement. After the People Republic of China announce its establishment, series of policy came out to eliminate the gap between rich and poor, as they all promised. One part of this plan came to the reforming in land policy. Yet the personal estate had been collected, and the land became state propoties. The possession of the land embodied in the terms of lease, as the government have the right to redistribute the land after the lease went expired. The inconsiderate division stuffed the originally empty wealthy quarter with crowded people from lower class, while breaking the spatial order of the well-designed residence. The policy suddenly impose enormous extra demographic density to the area, thus leading to the insufficient in public resources. The public space began to decay, as the sanitation condition became worse and private life had been pushed into public space because of the limited interior space. Residential building had been illegally reconstruct for various purpose. The pavement for pedestrian were soon regarded too narrow for the expanding utility of cars. And the buildings had been labeled structural unstable, poor fire protection , horrible sanitation. These old area, packed with fading architectural treasure and legendary stories, tripped by unsuccessful land policy and modern civilization were waiting for inevitable destruction. With the new government enacted the reform and opening policy, the land became transferable and the rich people in this area move out for better housing and left the remaining house for rental at a very low price. Such option suddenly meets the needs for the tide of people coming from suburb who were seeking for opportunities and a better living in the city. The area where used to be a high classed place, were now stuffed with the old, the poor and the migrant workers. After the policy, the freed market suddenly attract thousands of investors, who were willing to pay enormous investments in the area for fulfilling their commercial intention regarding the site is still the center of the city. If they did, according to past, such area would eventually turned into soulless shopping malls.
Site History
Right after the establishment of new government, the population density increased dramatically. The living condition coasted in consequence yet turning this place from the richest area in Wuhan, into the poorest place. In that case, no matter what the extra function of the site was, it has to facilitate the local residents.
Situation
Data above were basically describe the main status of the residents in the site, and their opinion and need on the illegal rebuild. The poor income and the low personal dwelling space very much explain their need for illegal rebuild, as they need the space, while did not possess the money to pay for legal rebuild. Thus, to preserve the architectural essence in this area, it is relatively better to move these people out with a huge compensation check provided by the investor. It could both lower the population density of the area while brought investment in the area for restoration, as the former project could raise the investor s interests.
Survey of Illegal Rebuild
As the surrounding of the site is in the center of the city, yet the value of the land is relatively higher than the adjacent area. Therefore, the design has to be a complex of different function.
Price
Site had been characterized by its pool, which is extremely rare in the center of the city. In that case, preserve of the water is not optional.
Water
As the illegal rebuild could be regard as the fulfilment of the dwellers most urgent need, we collect the type of illegal reconstruction of spatial extension and extract some of the typical pattern of such reconstruction. Among these illustrations we could safely conclude that most of them were originated from the need for larger space. As mentioned in the previous discussion, we know that such shortness were based on history issue.
Illegal Rebuild, Spatial Extension
As mentioned that illegal rebuild could be regard as the fulfilment of dwellers most urgent need, we also collected the type of illegal reconstruction of planar division. We could tell from the limited example we collected that the most urgent need were kitchen and bathroom, while the second urgent need is the transitory space between different types of room. Therefore, even though the new design is for the moving-in rich, it is necessary for us to include those two in the new design.
Illegal Rebuild, Planar Modification
As an expectation that our underwater complex would be designed in line with the current urban fabric, we randomly stamped 8 circle with a diameter of 100m, around the site, as a deeper investigation to the urban fabric in the site. We extracted all these samples in the circle and analyze, in order to make what we do, a salute to the old city pattern, rather than naĂŻve imitation. Among all those samples, there were standard traditional Wuhan residence known as Lifen, newly build commercial complex after the Reform and Opening policy , as well the old city corner which had been irregularly constructed. We discovered that as intricate as the urban pattern might have seem, it provided space with a scale well suited for public activity. Meanwhile, the more complicate the urban fabric, the more diverse in the street activity. Yet, such complexity in urban fabric could be considered as a beneďŹ cial factor.
Site Map
To look further into the site, we decided to sketch of street sections. We picked up several typical part of streets for the section, analyzed its function and activity of the street, and at last visualized it in proper scale. Our selection of the street section distributed in ďŹ ve level. A-main streets, connecting parts of the city (Cars) B-main streets, pedestrian area C-streets, connecting main streets (Cars) D-alley, connecting streets within area (Cars) E-alley within area (No Cars) As we could see from the street interface, as the scale of the street became smaller, the street activity became more diverse. But when the scale of the street is too narrow, the diversity starts to decline.
Street Section
Therefore, it is safe to conclude that the bigger the scale of the street, the less street activity there will be. If the diversity of street activity is the standard for a good street, it is ideal to build one in the same scale of street type D.
Street Section
Singking Alley
This project is one of the two projects aiming at renewing the rotten part of the old city. Given the investigation over the issue of the area history, the land price, the selected street section and city pattern, we feel obligated to preserve all those. Therefore, to preserve the already existing water, to increase public facilities of this area, and not to disturb the retail business already exist around the site, we came up a plan with both architecture and bussiness perspective.

Architectural Plan From government s perspective, their vital goal is to gain the reputation from dwellers by renewing the old district while applying the minimum expenditure. They possess the power to issue regulations and the rent the land to investors. From investor s perspective, their vital goal is to achieve more profit in the low expenditure possible while co-operating with government. They are restricted by government s regulation and possess money for the lease of lands. From the local residents perspective, they are the most vulnerable. But their comment on government is of significance. From architect s perspective, his vital goal is to improve the living condition of local residents while preserve the architecture treasure in the old area. In order to achieve that, he has to persuade government with a tempting plan, while attract the investor to pay for it. To do that, government first have to pay for the renewal of the site as they turn it into a qualified public place. Such improvement could impose indirect influence on the value of the adjacent area and yet attract the investments to the development of these area. The investment is used to achieve following goals: 1. local residents compensation check; 2. refine, or redesign the building under government s re gulation; 3. turn the existing resident into practical use, for example, residence like it used to be, comercial utility like coffee shop. In that case, the architect s goal had been achieved. The residents got improved living condition or huge compensation checks. The investor acquired the land for a lease. And the government gets reputation and save the money to renew the old district.

Business Plan One key factor in Chinese Gardening is the observer should be a part of the sight, as wherever a visitor stands, the place could be a scene for another visitor. This feature made traditional Chinese garden in irregular shape, and do not emphasis on making the sight symmetrical. Such chaotic appearance made the garden seem disorder, but it is actually ruled by the unseen request for the scenic focal point.

Exemplary Redesign of Selected Traditional Housing
This project is mainly a push-forward of the project Sinking Alley. Few years after the renewal opportunity provided by the project of Sinking Alley, we believe there is a great opportunity that the environment of the surrounding area would relatively improve, therefore attract plentiful of investment to this area. In that case, to preserve existing architectural essence of the old city, transition from traditional Chinese housing to modern Chinese housing is emerging.

But, in the modernization process, it gradually degenerated from the central space to merely functional as a gathering space. And ďŹ nally in the contemporary housing, living room replace the function of courtyard, and it has been marginalized to the same importance as bedroom or kitchen. In that regard, a revive of the traditional courtyard became vital in this project.

To see architecture as a continuum of life rather than space enclosed by the material. This Project is trying to dig into a controversial topic, a high-rise in the center of the city, also in a historic neighborhood. To accommodate the context, a mix-use complex of dwelling and workshop is necessary. In that case, the annex in would be an oďŹƒce and exhibition space for artist and workers, and the tower would be residential space.

Private Space
In the old area as we investigate, the private space for each person is limited. Therefore, everybody was forced to move their activities in public space like the hall or even alley. Because of such situation, the relationship between people in the old district were usually very close. Everybody was knowing each other, yet the social bond had been very strong. In most of the modern residence, Private space is plentiful for everyone. Therefore, everybody do their business inside their own room. Therefore, there is rare contact between people live in dierent apartment, and the social bond had been very weak. To resolve the problem, in the new design, the private space would be reasonably compress to a relatively small amount, the extra space would be added up to a big public place for social event.

How It Work As the modern culture separate people in the name of privacy, it kill the possibility for intimacy of any level by concrete walls. But for a healthy community, a friendly neighborhood, some level of intimacy is required. Therefore, breakable wall could easily provide the flexibility for people to transform their way of living, as well as the function of the room very quickly. Given that the dwellers here were most young people from culture industry, flexibility of space became of more importance. Hence, we divide the space into little unit in the first place, then left the possibilities for the dwellers to react with the building itself, and make this process a compromise for both side, man and the building, in order to achieve a homeostasis. In the ideal situation, the dwellers and the building would became organic systems rather than rigorous machine.

We use 2.5x6m as the smallest private space for people to have a decent life. Then we arrange the living unit along on the valley with the width of 3m, as an imitation of most common street width near the site. We hope the limitation of personal space would encourage dwellers to walk out their room and communicate, like the mechanism in the site, hence providing a friendly neighborhood. The collection in Met Museum is marvelous, but not so much for its curation. Being displayed in categories, armors have been isolated from its context. Also, given the vast number of the exhibits, only the presentable armor was on display. Which means the celebration armor is mostly chosen, the combat armor is left alone.
Current Situation in Arms and Armor Collection
The armor study is a voluntary exploration regarding the composition of a set of armor. By manually converting the photograph on Met website into a digital model, we are forced to look deeper into the structure of the armor.

Armor Study
Although the full body armor is an aggregation of different arm piece, in the modeling process, we discovered that the substructure of each piece, the strip extrusion on the surface of the panel, a structural tattoo. Such emphasis not only enhances the strength of the armor but also highlight the geometry, a human body, which it enveloped. Just like the previous exercise, the texture of the armor is not only an aesthetic choice but a reflection of the people who are wearing it. As mentioned, in the vast collection of Arms and Armory, the Met exhibition only focus on the celebration armor while neglecting the combat armor. However, great changes in history do not just rely on the elite who is wearing a fancy outfit, but on the thousands and millions of people under the command. An exhibition of armor should not just be an appreciation of golden decorative panel on a combat shield. It should be about war, about normal people who fought for what they believe in. To make a better curation, a further study of the history of human conflict became necessary. Combining the study with the actual collection of Met, ten event in the history of conflict were chosen. This piece of architecture, is a spacial instrument of their relationships.

Data Driven Urban Design, 2016
Researching and Hypothetical Rezoning for A New Railway Construction in Queens
Group Work as Team Leader, Writing All Vital Grasshopper Script Supervisor: Lucien Wilson
This is an urban scale project proposing a development plan for certain areas in Queens where new railway stations were built according to the land use, population density, built FAR, etc. We briefly looked into Brooklyn subway station and selected the best station in 16 different categories by looking into the average Q-Score of the selected area. Then we could run a similar iteration in Queens and match each station in Queens to the different categories in Brooklyn.
Dashboard and Iteration were achieved in Grasshopper
After matching each station in Queens with a station in Brooklyn, we assume the station in Brooklyn is a successful example of area development for a transportation stop. Consequently, we could refer the land use ratio in Brooklyn station as a statistic example which the Queens station will grow into.

To make the better informed decision, we start a semi-manual ďŹ ltering to determine the location of a railway station. By looking into the vacant land and government properties both on map and grasshopper, we were able to select the most economical way of the construction of the infrastructure.

Then we select one particular site among the other stations and calculate various possible zoning proposals including rezoning certain blocks and adding extra building area to certain blocks according to the best Brooklyn stations data. As a result, we evaluate each scenario by quantifying the construction impact, height impact and park availability thus we could get the best ďŹ ve development plan for the government to refer.

Lucky Noinobori, Installation, 2017 Teamwork with Yifei Wu: In charge of Part of the Modeling and Visualization Supervisor: John Cerone
Design based on Scanning Data
Lucky Noinobori is an installation hover above the Brownie Cafe in Columbia University. The geometry of each unit is an imitation of a moving carp, expressing a unique language compares to its surrounding. Lucky Noinobori is not just a sculpture of form, but a challenge to traditional architecture. By developing a hierarchy of structure in both Rhino and 3D Experience platform, not only we can deliver our design without 2D drawings, but we have the opportunities to gain a more eďŹƒcient communication between designers and manufacturers. What worth mentioning is that instead of getting information of our site using 2D drawing, we are modeling based on a 3D scanning point cloud aggregation. From input to output, a paperless design process is achieved.

Rendering of 4S Shop Design, 2014 Individual Work Supervisor: Ting Zhang
A rendering appears in the other work is simply a proof of my rendering ability part from all the diagrammatic drawing before. This is a 4s shop located on a subway line. The unique interior illumination as well as the geometry outside made it distinguished from the surrounding building. The plaza in the sight provide plenty of room for the traďŹƒc pressure brought by the subway.

Casting Series, 2016 -Vague -Drape -Gothic Individual Work Supervisor: Trevor Watson The class encouraged exploration and development in two different ways. The first was an abstract study of tiling principles, which looked at different tileable frame conditions. Strategically-placed nodes overlaid on these frames allowed the tile to be flipped and rotated so that adjacent nodes formed new relationships; these adjacent relationships allowed a single tile to create a seemingly random pattern over a large surface. The second means of development was from iterative feedback in fabrication. Students developed their own designs based on in-class tutorials in concrete casting and mold-making. There were no perfect molds, but through the feedback-driven design process, students built on these new understandings and pushed beyond with each successive iteration. Subsequently, each mold became a test of something new, attempting to push the boundaries into an unknown result so that the class as a whole could learn and develop.

Unit Diagram
The casting series presents two of the three stackable object I designed for the class Transitional Geometry. From tile to 2 dimension stacking, to eventually 3 dimensional stacking. I was able to explore dierent ways of casting and learned to deal with the gap between the perfectly precise digital model and the unpredictable casting piece. Eventually, I developed a new casting mold to minimize the imprecision of casting.

Unit Diagram
As a ďŹ nal phase of the series, Gothic represents an improved level of 3-dimensional stacking, as it not only allows a planar connection, it provides the possibilities for a spatial growth, not only forming a solid geometry but create space. The name of the Gothic didn t come along until we start to stack them together. The geometry looks much more impressive as the unit starts to aggregate, and because the unit is pointy and sharp, the atmosphere of a gothic church is formed.

Experimental Installation of Brick Pavilion, 2012 Group Work as Team Leader Supervisor: Wei Mu
Inspired by the Programmed Wall , the installation is an experiment for a construction of a café with similar form. By applying physical model and digital simulation (grasshopper), we are able to determine a self-support form of six curved wall with the help of a senior student. The installation is partly constructed due to the site and budget limitation. Meanwhile, industrial glue was applied for safety concern.

Product Design: Soles, 2014 Team Work with Zhaoxuan Wang Supervisor: Sam Cho In this design, we are designing soles for a customizable shoe. The upper surface of the shoe could be unwrapped to a planar surface, thus graphic designer could spread their design on the shoes. As supervised by our instructor, the goal of the Sole design is simply creating something unique enough as a part of the shoe, but still be able to be mass produced. The bottom of the sole has changed during the manufacturing process for it is unable to provide enough friction as qualified shoes.
Measurement of Huangjing Palace, 2014 Group Work as Team Leader Supervisor: Qian Wan
Located in Wudang Mountains, Huangjing Palace is one of the historic building in the complex of Taoist temples known as Taizipo, which is firstly built in 1412, and situated on a mountain slope of 60 degrees on Leon Peak of Wudangshan and has created an architectural wonder by borrowing the natural scenery. Due to the equipment and budget limitation, we were applying the most fundamental tools of measuring: camera, ladder, measuring tape and sketchbooks with pencils.
