Having freedom to choose a site that I like in Sydney and to design my ideal home, a ‘sculptural shell’ was envisioned on the tranquil Hyde Park in the midst of the bustling Sydney CBD. Like a camera, the windows located at specific points capture the moments and experinces of the site, such as the change in seasons, falling leaves, starry nights. Fit for one person dwelling only, it is designed as a compact house with built-in furniture, with viewing pla orms set at 3 fifferent loca ons: the living space, the bedroom and the corridor near the shower room.

GLENN MURCUTT STUDIO

ARTIST IN RESIDENCE Cooma, Berridale, Sydney

Located in a pris ne and unique site consi ng of large boulders in Cooma/Berridale NSW, the project aims to develop a public building on a private land owned by Farmers David and Vi jamieson, with great emphasis on landscape and the natural environment.

The facility houses an ‘Artist in Residence’ program, offering 3 par cipa ng ar st a place to socialise, work and rest. Snuggled in between the large Thors on higer grounds, the buildings are shaped in response to the landform. The porposal consists of 3 parts:

1. a large floor space for huge sculptures/artworks, a photo gallery and dark room for photography development, and a music hall. 2. Curator’s residence. 3. Ar sts residence with shared facili es.

The 3 nominated ar sts are Japanese musician Kitaro, Australian landscape photographer Ray killen, and German sculptor Sussan Kessler (in collaboraon with architect Petra Eichler).

GIFU CONNECTION STUDIO

BOAT SCHOOL @ Chowder Bay, Sydney UNSW + JAPANESE STUDENT (GIFU) JOINT PROGRAM

The project aims to design a boatshed / boat school for Simon Sadubin, a boat builder and industrial designer, on the historically-charged site - Chowder Bay, and placing major emphasis to the use of mber as the main material for structure and construc on. The concept is to crete a pitched-roof boatshed that responses to the site context and genius loci, yet dis nguishes it from the rest with the detailing of the ‘scissor-truss’ structure - inspired by the exis ng boarshed’s scissor-truss roof; by rota ng and transforming the classic scissor truss, a portal frame that func ons as both column and roof is created. Meanwhile the “openness” of Richard Leplastrier’s public amenity is applied to bring in more natural light and improve cross-ven la on. Orienta on-wise, two perpendicular axes are drawn from the site’s exis ng building alignments, with the proposed building skewed along the concrete base for be er founda on.

FLOW

Parrama a, Sydney

The project is a crea ve explora on of architectural adap ve reuse and the integra on of architecture into the wider urban landscape through a cross-cultural and interdisciplinary study of ‘Rivermark’ and the Parrama a Ferry Wharf. Reinforcing its image as the gateway to Parramatta City, the design is an invi ng mee ng place centred on various needs of the community, allowing people to interact, learn and share their unique cultural differences. This has been implemented by means of passive recrea onal spaces, viewing pla orms, pathways in the landscape and a thoroughfare, informa on centre, exhibi on hall, gym and childcare facili es, interac ve audio-visual centre, café, bar and restaurant within the building.

Inspired by the concept ‘flow’, mul ple levels including technical, architectural, spa al and sensory dimensions were explored. A series of landscaping interven ons have created a consistent ‘flow’ across the landscape to re-link the disrupted greenbelt along the river, and to enhance the river-site rela onship. The project also explores the connec on between indoor / outdoor by crea ng a series of harmonious spa al ‘flows’ both within the building and between the building and its surrounding landscapes. Technical and architectural systems, such as the water system and building access, have been integrated into the building, also play on this idea of ‘flow’.

interposition 介 处 Transforming the Parramatta Ferry Wharf Area interposition examines the physical, social and cultural qualities of the Parramatta Ferry Wharf area and explores its potentials in invigorating the “second CBD of Sydney”. This urban site, historically charged and strategically positioned in Parramatta, presents itself as a meeting point between the city of regular grid and the suburbs of irregular layout, between the seawater and freshwater along the Parramatta River, between stable ofÀce/ residential spaces and Áuid transport lines, between business and leisure, between local inhabitation and latent tourism. It is an area of conspicuous tensions between elements of signiÀcant diversity in history, culture, use, scale, and character. Architecture, Interior Architecture and Landscape Architecture students from the Southeast University and the University of New South Wales are positioned between different cultures, different institutes and different disciplines, working in teams of three to develop seven evocative propositions for the redevelopment of this challenging site.

A Village for Learning and Sharing

The school is inspired by the idea of a ‘village for learning & sharing’. A progression in scale leads students, teachers, and the public from large courtyards at the school gateways to smaller, protected courtyards at the classroom units and community facili es. A path running across the site creates a strong north-south axis, direc ng movement into the seemingly sca ered school facili es. This spine, along with the courtyards, encourages students to socialise as they make their way to their classes, and also enables informal mee ngs to take place along the way.

Classroom blocks, while similar, are given dis nc ve idenes by unique colours which also help with way-finding. Modular classroom layouts (GL units: 9x8m; Specialist units: 8x7.5m) supported by concrete columns form a protected, internal courtyard for each cluster of classrooms, with brick infill and mber claddings for the external faรงade to create a sense of warmth and calmness.
