Mujeres

WOMEN ARE STRONG

I have always loved traveling. Traveling is so wonderful. The joy to get to know new places runs in the family. It is not only about visiting new places, it implies getting to know the inhabitants of such new places.

The crisis of the building sector in Spain changed dramatically my professional experience since 2010. I went from site supervision near Las Rozas de Madrid to projects in Addis Ababa. The effort required on the personal side has its compensation by being able to continue exploring and learning.

During the last years, I have traveled to countries where I had not been before. These emerging countries are quite different from all the European countries I had visited before. Smells, colours, the sky, cities, rural areas as well as the Architecture and, of course, their inhabitants.

However, I have found out a common feature that can be observed in the different societies I have gotten to know. Women in these countries show, through their activity and attitude, that they are the ones that provide the necessary structure and support their societies. In the same manner, I have found out that this does not mean equality. It does not surprise me…In Europe, equality does not exist. It would have been great to find such a country where equality is stablished or even a matriarchal society ( I would have requested to be transferred there right away!!), but this has not been the case.

So, even if that fact has not surprised me in a positive manner, I have decided to observe carefully that strength and wisdom. I hope that one day the girls that are shown in these picture get the recognition they deserve based on their strength. I also hope that they achieve the privileged space that they deserve in their societies.

I also hope I can continue adding women worldwide to this collection

LAS MUJERES SON FUERTES.

ADDIS ABEBA.

ADDIS ABABA. WOMEN WHO TRANSPORT

In the horn of Africa, women transport. They transport water, wood, coal, food…they transport their children. And everything gets transported on their backs.

They support and transport everything that their society needs. They are the support of it.

NAIROBI.

NAIROBI. WOMEN WHO MOVE ON

Nairobi is a vibrant city. The women of the city vibrate and seem to be in permanent movement. They are moving on to their workplaces, to their houses…they walk or someone gives them a ride on their motorcycle

Women in Nairobi move on and around and by doing so, they are helping move their societies

ARUSHA.

ARUSHA. WORKING WOMEN AND WOMEN WHO TRANSPORT

In Arusha, women transport objects on their heads, but in some occasion I have run into women developing other professional types of jobs. There are women at school who walk along those who transport.

BANGKOK.

BANGKOK. WOMEN WHO OBSERVE

In Thailand, women and men use different expressions to thank other people...it is a gender topic. It seems like the way women thank others is more kind.

I have to admit I don’t like this, but Thai women do not seem to be uncomfortable in this regard

Women in the pictures seem calmed, observing, smiling and surrounded by other women x

BEIJING.

BEIJING. WOMEN WHO GUIDE

In China we met Susana and María. Excellent guides, nice and intelligent women

Concubines who committed suicide so that their husbands, warriors, could go to the war as one of the stories of the Chinese opera

A country where, not long ago, having a daughter was seen as a kind of punishment

SHANGAI.

SHANGAY. WOMEN THAT ARE PART OF A CHANGING SCENARIO

A growing city. Rice fields that have been replaced by 635 m high skyscraper and a “glorious grandmother” María, who walks us around the French concession, takes us to the ferry that disembarks on the financial district and guides us as well through Chinese gardens.

A “gondoliera” that crosses the canals of Tong Li

SAN MIGUEL DE ALLENDE. MEXICO

MEXICO

In 2007, before Ciro, our third son, was born we crossed the Atlantic Ocean. We visited DF and San Miguel de Allende. In San Miguel, hosted by the Hendersons, my second family, we enjoyed wonderful days.

Women work a lot in Mexico as well.

ACCORDING TO WIKIPEDIA

WOMAN

A woman is a female human. The term woman is usually reserved for an adult, with the term girl being the usual term for a female child or adolescent. The term woman is also sometimes used to identify a female human, regardless of age, as in phrases such as "women's rights". "Woman" may also refer to a person's gender identity.[1] Women with typical genetic development are usually capable of giving birth from puberty until menopause.

FEMINISM

Feminism is a range of political movements, ideologies, and social movements that share a common goal: to define, establish, and achieve political, economic, personal, and social rights for women.[1][2] This includes seeking to establish educational and professional opportunities for women that are equal to such opportunities for men.

Feminist movements have campaigned and continue to campaign for women's rights, including the right to vote, to hold public office, to work, to earn fair wages or equal pay, to own property, to receive education, to enter contracts, to have equal rights within marriage, and to have maternity leave. Feminists have also worked to promote bodily autonomy and integrity, and to protect women and girls from rape, sexual harassment, and domestic violence.[3]

Feminist campaigns are generally considered to be a main force behind major historical societal changes for women's rights, particularly in the West, where they are near-universally credited with achieving women's suffrage, gender neutrality in English, reproductive rights for women (including access to contraceptives and abortion), and the right to enter into contracts and own property.[4] Although feminist advocacy is, and has been, mainly focused on women's rights, some feminists, including bell hooks, argue for the inclusion of men's liberation within its aims because men are also harmed by traditional gender roles.[5] Feminist theory, which emerged from feminist movements, aims to understand the nature of gender inequality by examining women's social roles and lived experience; it has developed theories in a variety of disciplines in order to respond to issues concerning gender.[6][7]

Numerous feminist movements and ideologies have developed over the years and represent different viewpoints and aims. Some forms of feminism have been criticized for taking into account only white, middle class, and collegeeducated perspectives. This criticism led to the creation of ethnically specific or multicultural forms of feminism, including black feminism and intersectional feminism.[8]
