DOES SUBCULTURE STILL....

EXIST?

Does subculture still exist? It’s a question we’ve asked ourselves many times before. On one hand, the music we listen to no longer dictates the clothes we wear but, on the other, the likes of Gosha Rubchinskiy and Nasir Mazhar are recrafting subcultural fashion codes, creating modern-day tribes for fashion’s new wave. Can true subcultures really exist in the same way as they did in the past? Have we outpaced the ability for subcultures to grow? Has the internet allowed them to break new ground in a way they never could previously? And what has changed from the times when Hebdige was writing about punks, mods and skinheads? Subcultures do still exist in society today but they are nowhere near as clear cut and black and White as they were in the days of mods and punks. Back then, it was important that you belonged to one group or the other but nowadays it is more on a spectrum. There are still people who would clearly identify themselves with a specific group, such as goths, but there are also people who have certain “gothic” items but do not identify completely as a goth. This kind of spectrum exists with all groups so therefore it makes its difficult to define were one group stops and the next starts due to this overlap.

Do you think subculture still exist? Yeah i think they do, but they’re not as prominent as they used to be, i think because society has become more diverse over the decades. I also think subcultures aren’t just set to a certain style e.g. Mods, rastas etc but instead, now in the 21st century subcultures have come to a new age and are mixed, for instance evident subcultures that existed in the past, do exist today but interwined with on another.
