connections
style & comfort
design for a tropical climate Central to the design of this house is the open connection between spaces. Large openable glass surfaces blur the border between inside and outside. By making use of a veranda and roof overhangs, all glass surfaces and the spaces behind them are protected from direct sunlight. Windows are placed in a manner to maximise cross-ventilation. The double-height living area stays cool during the hottest hours of the day, and high ceilings in the bedrooms provide a comfortable sleeping climate.
design for an individual client The client owns a business in Indonesian Malapoga hardwood. The use of this timber throughout the house gives a personal touch to the design and simultaneously makes the house a showcase for the business. In the design a contrast between soft and hard, rough and smooth materials is created. Together with the variation between open, closed and semi-open surfaces, this gives the house a contemporary and playful character, resonating with the clients wish for a modern yet not too minimalistic design.

answer to the demand for making Addis Ababa a modern and urban city while maintaining it’s historical identity by accomodating the cultural qualities of a community-centered lifestyle, mixity and appropriation of space
urban border informal commercial street dwelling clusters
levels of urbanity The outside border of the neighbourhood provides the urban character that is needed in this central location of the city, containing formal commercial units and being of a more organised and refined character than the informal commercial street that is lying behind it. This domain provides places for more informal commercial activities, preserving
this important part of the immaterial heritage of Addis Ababa culture, and in particular Kirkos area where 0

the project is located. The pedestrian courtyards formed by the apartment clusters in the centre of the neighbourhood are focussed on creating a community feeling for the inhabitants of that cluster.
a sequence of in-between spaces The gradual transition between the domains, ranging from the highly urban outside border of the neighbourhood to the very private within the dwelling itself, enables inhabitants to identify themselves
feeling like an individual, to being a part of a family, a neighbour, a community member and a citizen. with all the different groups they belong to: from

creating communities Dwelling blocks are clustered to enclose the community courtyard. Subsequently, within the blocks all dwellings entrances are situated on a collective outside space that is shared with a limited number of families. These shared terraces on various levels, connected through an exterior vertical circulation system, provide space to carry out domestic activities and amplify close bonds between neighbours.

In this transformation assignment a warehouse complex, situated in an old harbour area in Rotterdam, is adapted to become a vocational school. Central to the design is the unification of different worlds and atmospheres. Practical as well as theoretical functions, divided in public, collective and more private zones, come together in one building complex. Subtle differences in lighting, materialization, level and scale enable the buildings users to recognize in which zone they are located.
atmosphere
public vs. private The design entails an open learning environment, that avoids closed-off spaces and fosters cross fertilization between different user groups. As a representation of the vocation, the public area is highly transparent both internally as to the surroundings. The more private educational areas are focused introvertedly on the collective heart and routing.

circulation & facade The practical requirement to be able to use multiple parts of the building seperately from each other, led to the concept of completely detaching circulation from user space.
The routing,
embracing the building in the form of two interlocking tubes. takes the visitor along
routing
ever changing views of the surroundings as well as the interior of the building.
The facade panels of corten steel are perforated, causing vivid natural lighting of the interiors during day and an interesting facade at night. The interior is defined by the visible steel column structure and concrete floors and walls, making the New Kunsthal a tough building that fits the character of Rotterdam.
