CLOSER, your new online community magazine. We are, as the name suggesta focusing on Maidstone. However, KENT being such a beautiful and big county, it is rather hard to focus only on this borough. So forgive the confusion, if any, we will try to cover the best of the best and little bit of the rest too. We invite you all to be part of it, this is YOUR MAG! So please, don't be shy and contribute freely (with whatever you want others to read about). We publish monthly and with your help we hope to get better. So here's an advanced THANK YOU, I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed making it!

Made in Kent... TURNING 40.
''WHAT'S TICKING'' by Michele McCllarren
"So I am turning 40 tomorrow, I can hear half of you gasping with sympathy and the other half of you saying yippee girlfriend you are about to have ten years of sexiness. The truth is I am terrified, not of facing a decade of sexiness; oh I will gladly embrace that. It’s the self founded pressure of looking at the rows of body con dresses I have collected in the last year due to all the magazine trends that previously made me look bootylicious that now honestly makes me look like a woman about to give birth and let’s not even discuss the breasts that after 6 children are now tingling my toes if the eBay wonder bra is in the wash basket! The continual attempts of murder I have tried for the last 6 months with a breast hair that has magical powers, one minute it's gone and within 28 days it re-appears. The shock of finding grey hairs on my body that now is in an Olympic race to beat the amount on my head. I even considered getting breast implants until I woke up in sweat the other night from a nightmare where I was old and wrinkled all over but had a pair or 38 Double D footballs sticking out from me. I find myself instead of watching Victoria Secrets annual event on SKY, I am now staring for hours at American adverts of ageing cream solutions and fighting my inner self not to buy the special offers. I have over 250 pairs of high heels that I remember running for the bus in my younger days, now they kill toes if I go out for an hour and I have to do a walk that is between a waddling duck and Clint Eastwood. No wonder people are looking at me with an unusual look on their faces. So in essence I am scared of the big 40 and it is a realisation that I have to adjust to the changes my body needs and this makes me feel old, the years have gone so fast and even though I have no regrets, it still hits home that I am nearer my retirement age than ever before and living life the way you want to is even more valuable. I feel sexy and have somehow managed to hypnotise a toy boy to fall in love with me, I am healthy, intelligent and not bad looking and compared to real issues in life, I have so much to celebrate tomorrow about the achievements I have made in the 40 years I have been on this earth. So with these last thoughts, I am going to party tomorrow like it is 1999 and embrace the excitement of being deemed sexy for the next decade and carry my alias name Cougar with pride. Cheers to me and all the other women who are turning 40 this year, may our sexiness light up the town :)
...A THOUGHT ON BREEZING ON BROMPTONS Spring has arrived and pedal pushers are back in fashion, so what better excuse than to 'get on your bike'! Thanks to the new Brompton Docks rental service, several bike docking stations have been delivered throughout Kent and other regions meaning that there is no need to break-the-bank when looking for a last minute adventure! Now you may assume that these specifically engineered fold-up bikes are somewhat stable? Fear not, they are perfectly able with three gears, a night light and a bell! After seemingly endless weeks of hard work whilst struggling on a mere 5-6 hours sleep it was certainly time for a break, one that will be energising and healthy for the soul, I thought promisingly… After collecting our bikes and stacking them in the car boot at Maidstone East Station, we ventured twenty minutes down the road to the famously haunted village of Pluckley where we were to spend the weekend on a beautiful historic farm surrounded by picturesque acres of flowers and farmland. The next morning, we began with a bright and early-ish start of 9:30am and after tucking into our hearty farmhouse breakfast, we quickly assembled our bikes and were off! We were whizzing away down the pretty country lanes and suddenly it hit me, an indescribable sense of freedom and sheer happiness! The sun was shining, I was giggling and screaming “horse!” or “lamb!” every few minutes and nothing was going to wipe that ridiculous smile from my face! Some hours later, it was time to make an all-important pub stop en route back to the farm. We pulled up at The Black Horse, reputably known for its excellent burgers and traditionally cosy atmosphere, where we enjoyed a well-deserved cold beverage in the gardens overlooking the village. After retiring to our idyllic farm hotel, we showered and prepared for dinner at the Rose and Crown gastro pub at the end of the lane, so close that you could easily chance a cycle ride in a dress and sandals! The Rose and Crown is a typical village pub, friendly owners and glorious food. One huge meal and a couple of Proseccos later we jumped back on our bikes and were back in our room in less than five minutes! You can rent a Brompton Bike from various places in Kent; the details can be found at www.bromptondock.co.uk. To book your stay at Elvey Farm at www.elveyfarm.co.uk from approximately £125 per night; this includes an awesome breakfast. By Abigail Clarke.

WORKING WOMAN
A DAY IN THE LIFE
I normally get up 6am, sometimes even 5.30am. Shocking to say but I only ever have fresh coffee (not good I know but I am not hungry in the morning!) When I get up, the first thing I do is put my coffee on, feed the chickens then I check emails and then social media etc.
As I do a school run at 3:30pm I coordinate all orders that need to be despatched that day in line with that so I go to the post office before then. I always like to get orders out as quickly as possible. As an impatient person myself I know how much it means to a customer to have their order promptly.
It is amazing what you can get done at that time of the day. I can sort out images and load them up along with notices and updates. A lot of customers peruse the internet in the evening so orders tend to come Clara Linton, 40, lives in through over night. I then take one Cranbrook with her daughter to the bus stop at 7am, back husband and two to sort out our youngest daughter daughters and she and do the school run at 9am. I then designs and creates come back and get started with high quality, elegant orders or go to the workshop if I need handmade country to drill a stack of wood or sanding. crafts & gifts.
At dinner time we always try to eat together as a family so I need to be organised based on what is going on in the day and after school clubs. This gives us all a chance to talk about our day and try and have a laugh. When we go out our girls particularly love going to the Curry house in Cranbrook for a sit down meal. They are incredibly attentive and the food is excellent.
I have lunch and sit down for around My dream job growing 25 minutes but during busy periods such as Wealden Times Midsummer or up? Actress or showing Midwinter fair there just isn’t the time off, as my husband calls it! to stop. I will literally eat in between drying times of painting or varnishing. Dream job now? I would love to be the Stig on It is shocking to say that if I am really Top Gear, what a cool busy, particularly at Christmas it has job and even better to been known for me not to even stop be a woman doing it! and eat...not a good advert for my growing girls!
My evening normally consists of a glass of wine! As a real morning person I can’t stay up late so invariably am in bed relatively early. I normally go to bed around 10pm. Sometimes we go up at 9pm and watch the TV during the week.
CLARA'S BUSINESS: I started by making cards about 10 years ago, then put the phrases and quotes on to signs. My main line was chalkboards and still do make a great deal, but the signs have completely taken off and 90% of orders are them. They are affordable yet excellent quality and there is always something for everyone. I supply a number of shops up and down the country and I am on a variety of online market sites.

ITS ALL ABOUT YOU...
YOUR LUCKY SEVEN!
7 TIPS ON HOW TO LOOK AFTER YOUR SKIN THIS SUMMER!
1. STAY HYDRATED! Yes we all know it, but how
much water do you really drink every day? Increase this intake in the summer even more to decrease the heat level and keep the body cool and hydrated. If you need an alternative vary water with coconut water or green tea, but avoid fizzy drinks and concentrated fruit juices...
2. YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT!
Do not consume too much of snacks and salty products as salt can have a dehydrating effect on the body. Include fruits like watermelon, cucumber, oranges and lettuce which will give you nutrients and anti-oxidants. Great are also green vegetables, as they help to improve the immune system and decreases stress level in the body.
3. EXFOLIATE! This step is very important if you want healthy glowing skin. Exfoliate 2-3
times per week, no need to splash out, you can make one at home. Best ingredient to use is sugar, yes sugar! It contains alpha hydroxy acid that works easily to remove the dirt and dead cells clogging your pores, giving you brilliant results. Easy home recipe: 1 cup of sugar, add 1 tablespoon lemon juice and 1 teaspoon honey, mix well and apply.
4. STEAMING! You can give yourself a steam therapy once in a week to open clogged pores
and remove all the dirt that has accumulated in the skin. Steaming helps to make skin clearer and softer and works well for all skin types.
5. SUN SCREEN!
Always apply a sunscreen which contains high SPF, 30 minutes before stepping out in the sun. Sunscreen not only prevents skin darkening and skin damage but will also protect you from harsh UVA rays that can lead to skin cancer. Re-apply every two hours and opt for a waterproof sunscreen. Try to avoid direct sunlight during 10am to 4pm, as sun rays are harshest during that time and can have adverse effects on your skin.
6. EXERCISE!
Exercise helps to get rid of the toxins and gives your skin a glow. Do simple workouts or yoga every morning to feel good and stay fresh. If you feel too lazy to work out, walk as much as you can – you will have more energy! Exercise increases the blood circulation and promotes supply of blood that gives the skin a natural and healthy glow. This is the simplest answer to how to get glowing skin.
7. AND FINALLY, ADD OMEGA-3 FATTY ACIDS to your diet. Fatty fish like
salmon and mackerel are great sources of omega-3s. You can also get omega-3s from walnuts and olive oil.

So, the 2 hours of endless speeches began and the award winners took to the stage, declaring how surprised and happy they are to have won. Meanwhile, the other nominees had to sit and listen to these speeches while putting on their best ‘I’m happy for the winner’ face, just in case they are caught on camera. Now the losing nominees are disappointed as well as bored. They need cheering up. Cue Graham Norton.

I bet most of the guests at the ceremony were thinking the same thing, that being: “get on with it, we only came for the after show party”. When opening the awards, Graham bluntly reassured his audience: “as I like to say about sex, the sooner we start, the sooner we finish”. Not what you’d expect to hear at a prestigious awards ceremony. But who cares!? It’s honest and it’s entertaining.
However, what makes Graham the star of the night for me, is the fact that he had to graciously accept losing out on 2 entertainment awards (to Ant and Dec…who else!?) in front of the whole audience, whilst standing on stage entertaining. Talk about rubbing it in! For that, I think he deserves an award.

CAN YOU NAME AT LEAST 3 POWER FOODS? ARE YOU EATING 400G OF VEG AND FRUIT EVERY DAY? CHANCES ARE YOU WILL LOWER THE RISK OF DIABETES, STROKE & OBESITY...
We all indulge, over eat, rush our meals don't plan them or simply forget to eat healthy...even though media is constantly reminding us to eat FIVE A DAY, do we really? Most of the time? (now increased to 7 a day!) THAT'S FIVE PORTIONS OF 80 GRAMS OF FRUIT AND VEGETABLES a day in total, according to WHO (world heath organization) eating 400g of fruit & veg a day can lower risk of some diseases, like diabetes2, stroke, heart disease and obesity...!
BUT HOW ABOUT OTHER REALLY IMPORTANT FACTORS IN OUR DIET? LET'S TALK ABOUT POWER FOODS...
Start your day with a cup of TEA, as maybe to your surprise, tea is one of our selected power foods. TEA helps prevent cancer and heart disease; it may reduce the risk of stroke, obesity, arthritis, and diabetes; and has antioxidants that protect the body from the effects of aging. (but everything in moderation) BEANS & MUSHROOMS for breakfast anyone? Well they are both on our list too, but as with beans, try to cook them yourself, instead of using the canned ones soaked in sugars and salt, beans contain no saturated fat, trans fats, or cholesterol. They are high in protein, fiber, iron, folic acid, and potassium and plant chemicals in them protect you from heart disease & certain cancers. As for MUSHROOMS, they are loaded with a potent disease-fighting antioxidant called ergothioneine, which helps cells in the body ward off damage from dangerous free radicals, which may play a role in serious illnesses, such as heart disease, cancer, and Alzheimer's disease. Come snacking time, 2 hours after breakfast, hunger kicks in, why not change a habit and have an AVOCADO or a POMEGRANATE instead of those crisps?
K

An FOR A DARK ONE! adequate intake of potassium can help ward off high blood pressure, heart disease, and stroke. NEED A SNACK? CHOCOLATE anyone? It can help improve overall heart health, reduce LDL ( "bad") cholesterol and blood pressure and increase blood flow to the brain. It may also improve blood sugar and insulin sensitivity, which could reduce diabetes risk.
One more meal for the day. We all look forward to our evening meals, kids come home and first thing they ask, ''what's for dinner??''sounds familiar? Will they be surprised if you say chicken on a bed of LENTILS? (rather than potatoes or white rice)...LENTILS of all legumes and nuts contain the highest levels of protein. WHAT WE DIDN'T KNOW... WILLIAM HAZLITT
(10 April 1778 – 18 September 1830)
William, the youngest of the surviving Hazlitt children, was born in Mitre Lane, Maidstone. He was an English writer, remembered for his humanistic essays and literary criticism, as the greatest art critic of his age, and as a drama critic, social commentator, and philosopher. He was also a painter. He is now considered one of the great critics and essayists of the English language, placed in the company of Samuel Johnson and George Orwell. Yet his work is currently little read and mostly out of print. When Hazlitt was two his family moved to Ireland and then the United States, where his father preached as a Unitarian Minister. They returned to England in 1786 to live at Wem, in Shropshire.
In 1793 Hazlitt was sent by his father to the Unitarian New College at Hackney. He was tutored by eminent Dissenting thinkers such as Joseph Priestly. During his time there Hazlitt formed habits of independent thought and a belief in Liberty and the rights of man. These ideas would remain with him all his life. Hazlitt had chosen not to follow his father in a pastoral career, and began to study as a painter under t tutelage of his brother, John, who was a successful portrait painter. He began to make something of a living, and a portrait he painted of his father was considered worthy of exhibition in the Royal Academy Later in 1802, Hazlitt was commissioned to travel to Paris to copy several works of the old masters hanging in the Louvre. This was one of the great opportunities of his life. Over a period of three month he spent long hours in rapture studying the paintings. He later thought long and hard of what he had seen and this provided substance for considerable body of art criticism some years afterward. He also had an opportunity to see Napoleon (at a distance), whom he idolised as the rescuer of the common man from the oppression of royal “Legitimacy”.
In 1798, Hazlitt encountered Samuel Taylor Coleridge. He would speak of Coleridge as “the only person I ever knew who answered to the idea of a man of genius”. Coleridge introduced Hazlitt to William Wordsworth, and the three became friends, sharing ideas of liberty and the right of man. Unfortunately this would later end, as their friendship would not last political change. In 1803, Hazlitt met Charles Lamb and his sister Mary. They became fast friends, which would last until the end of Hazlitt’s life. Hazlitt frequented the society of the Lambs for the next several years. In 1805 h turned to metaphysics and the study of philosophy that had attracted him earlier, publishing his first book, On the Principles of Human Action. He was not getting much work as a painter, and his outrage a events then taking place in English politics in reaction to Napoleon’s wars led to his writing and publishing, at his own expense (though he had almost no money), a political pamphlet, Free Thoughts on Public Affairs (1806). Finally he began to find enough work to support himself, if just barely.
In 1808, Hazlitt married Sarah Stoddart, a friend of Mary Lamb. The couple had three sons, but only one survived infancy – William, who Hazlitt adored, was born in 1811. By January 1812 Hazlitt was penniless, he embarked on a sometime career as a lecturer, and gained some attention (as well as much-needed money) and they gave him an opportunity to expand some of his own ideas. He made new friends and admirers, including Mary Shelly and John Keats. Hazlitt no longer entertained serious ambition as a painter. Although he had demonstrated some talent the results fell far short of the standards he had set for himself. Later that year he met John and Leigh Hunt, publisher and editor of The Examiner, who found work for him as a journalist. Hazlitt would contribute drama criticism, literary criticism, art criticism, and political essays. He would come to enjoy critical and popular acclaim.
...WE LEARN TODAY
In early 1815, Napoleon was defeated at Waterloo. Having idolised Napoleon for years, Hazlitt took it as a personal blow. The event seemed to mark the end of hope for the common man against the oppression of “legitimate” monarchy. Profoundly depressed, he took up heavy drinking, his marriage deteriorated, and he was reported to have walked around unshaven and unwashed for weeks. Lamb, who tried to remain uninvolved politically, tolerated his abrasiveness, and that friendship managed to survive, if only just in the face of Hazlitt’s growing bitterness, short temper, and a propensity for hurling invective at friends and foes alike. Hazlitt’s political essays would be attacked by Tory publications accusing him of ignorance, dishonesty, and obscenity. Not only was he personally shaken, he found it more difficult to have his work published and once more he had to struggle for a living. His mood deteriorated and he had grown resigned to the lack of love between him and Sarah. He had been visiting prostitutes and was unable to pay his rent. Sarah left with their son, forcing him to find his own accommodation. He would occasionally see his son and even his wife, with whom he remained on speaking terms, but they were effectively separated. Hazlitt retreated to the countryside, but would continue to publish essays. He shut himself away like a hermit, not wanting to withdraw completely but rather to become an invisible observer of society.
s
In August 1820 Hazlitt began a tumultuous relationship with Sarah Walker, the 19 year old daughter of his the London landlord. Sarah had aspirations to better herself and a famous author seemed a prize catch. Hazlitt was infatuated, but Sarah would become romantically involved with another lodger called y. Tomkins. This led to angry altercations of jealousy and recrimination. The relationship ended. Hazlitt’s mind nearly snapped and he contemplated suicide. This was the worst crisis of his life, and he would hs, later record the experience in a fictional book Liber Amoris, which he used as a cathartic outlet for his misery. Over the next few years Hazlitt would continue to turn out essays of remarkable variety and literary merit. Among these were a series of popular articles called Table-Talk which were included in a book of the same name. Hazlitt explained these essays as being “literary and conversational” rather than being scholarly and precise, as in a conversation between friends, insights into human nature and a vehicle to express literary and art criticism. They attracted some admiration during his lifetime, but it was only long after his death that their reputation achieved full stature.
In 1824 Hazlitt met Isabella Bridgewater, who married him, of necessity in Scotland, as his divorce from he Sarah Stoddart was not recognised in England. Little is known about Isabella, or about her interaction with Hazlitt. Certainly Hazlitt nowhere in his writings suggests that this marriage was the love match he at had been seeking, nor does he mention his new wife at all. After a tour of Europe Hazlitt and his new wife divorced.

t,
In 1825 Hazlitt collected a series of critical essays he produced for the Examiner to form a book called The Spirit of the Age. Sketches of twenty-five prominent men or notable figures that showed characteristics of the age. Reflecting on the book as a whole, the author explains as an example, “the present is an age of talkers, and not of doers; and the reason is, that the world is growing old. We are s far advanced in Arts and Sciences, that we live in retrospect , and doat on past achievements”. Few details remain of Hazlitt’s later life. After a brief stay at Bouvier Street in London in 1829, sharing lodgings with his son, Hazlitt moved into a small apartment at 6 Frith Street Soho. He continued to churn out articles, but was being plagued with painful bouts of illness. Hazlitt was confined to his bed, and with his son in attendance, William Hazlitt died of stomach cancer on 18 September 1830. His last words were have reported to have been “well, I’ve had a happy life”. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Hazlitt
